College (Fri) - Andrew Miller with another fine outing, 8 5 4 0 4 2 (109 pitches) :

" ... In eight innings, Miller allowed four unearned runs on five hits and four walks to run his record to 8-0 for the first time in his career. He struck out just two batters but that was enough to move past Scott Bankhead and into sixth on the Tar Heels' career list. Miller, who lowered his earned run average to 1.33, has given up just two earned runs over his last four starts."  (UNC)

Lisa Winston, MLB.com, on the LAD kids, Joel Guzman, Chad Billingsley :

" ...  Joel, the upside is just tremendous ...  The guy is 6-foot-6 and he grew out of shortstop. It wasn't until this year that they thought it was OK to move him. He'd been playing some first, they were moving him to left field. I think it's just a matter of getting him comfortable and getting him reps defensively at whatever position they decide on putting him in. I think he's going to be a tremendous player. Billingsley, also, is young but has been a quick mover. He's been pretty much lights-out at every level he's pitched at so far. I would not be at all surprised to see them both in Los Angeles this summer. I think Billingsley with a strong start over the first few weeks or months at Vegas could very easily be in their rotation by midseason. Guzman, it's more of a question of how things will trickle down in terms of who gets hurt, who takes their place, how quickly he can get up to speed, whether it's at left field, right field or first base. I wouldn't want to put a timetable on him because I don't think it's going to be his bat alone that's going to dictate that."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, on BOS sleeper Jeff Corsaletti :

" ...   drafted in the sixth round in 2005, out of the University of Florida. He was a very successful college hitter (hitting .313 in '03, .323 in '04, and .358 in '05, with improving power and plate discipline) but wasn't a super-hot property on draft day since his physical tools are considered marginal. But his ability to hit the ball hard and to control the strike zone well was notable. He also has good baseball instincts. He hit .357/.429/.490 in 59 games in the Sally League after signing  ...  Currently playing for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Carolina League, Corsaletti is 12-for-35 (.343) so far, with three doubles, seven walks, and two steals. I expect he will continue to batter A-ball pitching, and won't really be tested until he reaches Double-A, probably later this year. We'll keep a close eye on this one. If he hits in Double-A, he could advance more rapidly than expected."

Jim Callis, Baseball America, trying to sort out the TB outfield :

" ...   In addition to Young and Dukes, there are also several other outfield prospects on our Tampa Bay Top 30 Prospects list ... Given all the talent ahead of them, however, they're probably out of luck, at least with the Devil Rays. Gomes' best position is standing in the batter's box, so let's put him at DH. And the rest of this actually is pretty simple to figure out. All-star Carl Crawford keeps getting better and is signed through 2008 with club options that can tie him up through 2010 ...   Rocco Baldelli is likewise signed through 2008 with club options that can extend his deal through 2011. That makes it fairly obvious that he'll be the long-term center fielder over Joey Gathright ... Young is merely the best prospect in baseball, and he won't be able to become a free agent until after the 2012 season at the earliest. He'll take over in right at some point this year. Dukes has fabulous tools and is developing nicely, but there's no place for him to fit in. If he continues to progress and keeps his temper under control, he's going to give the Rays another attractive trade chip. All this outfield depth makes it pretty clear why Tampa Bay continues to hold out hope that B.J. Upton can play shortstop. If he can't cut it there, third base looks like his most logical destination."

The younger Upton just about ready for regular action :

" ...  Farm director A.J. Hinch said top pick Justin Upton, who has been slowed by a shoulder injury, will begin playing in extended spring training games today (Friday). It will be his first game action at his new position, center field, and Hinch said Upton will play at least a week's worth of games before making his debut at Class A South Bend." (Arizona Republic)

Rangers' farm notes from the Dallas Morning News :

" ...   The top two members of the Frisco rotation, lefty John Danks and right-hander Thomas Diamond, have had their difficulties early in the season. Danks, who turns 21 today (Friday), is 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA in 8 2/3 innings of work. He's given up four home runs in two starts. Diamond is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 5 2/3 innings. He has five walks and nine strikeouts. "They'll get much sharper," Kennedy said. "Always that first week coming out of spring training you have days off and travel, and generally pitchers aren't as sharp because of the difference in routine." ...  Vince Sinisi, drafted in the second round of the 2003 draft, is playing first base in Frisco this season after a few years in the outfield."

College - " ... Washington pitcher Tim Lincecum struck out 14 and allowed only one hit over six innings to run his scoreless innings streak to 34 and two-thirds innings as the Huskies beat BYU, 10-1, Thursday night ..  Lincecum, a junior from Renton's Liberty High, improved his record to 8-2 with the win. The only hit he allowed was a one-out double in the fourth by BYU shortstop Marco Villezcas and he walked only one. Lincecum, who leads the nation with 123 strikeouts, fanned the side in order in the first, second and sixth innings. Over his last 48 innings, he's allowed only 13 hits and one earned run."  (U of Washington)

Andrew Miller, North Carolina, 7-0, 1.53, pitches today (Friday) vs Virginia Tech.

Snippets from the weekly report from the International League :

" ...  Pitcher Jeremy Sowers has just 29 professional starts, but is already proving that he was well worth the 6th overall pick in the 2004 first-year player draft. Sowers (1-0) has only allowed an unearned run while striking out seven in his first two starts with the Bisons this year (12.1 IP). Just 22-years old, the lefty had a fantastic rookie season in 2005, combining to go 14-4 with a 2.37 ERA at Single-A Kinston, Double-A Akron and the Bisons. He led Cleveland's farm system that year in wins and strikeouts (149) and was named the Indians' Minor League Pitcher of the Year."

" ... Delmon Young hit in the first seven games of the season ... LHP Tom Gorzelanny has started the season by recording nine straight scoreless innings. The 23-year-old tossed four frames in a no-decision on Thursday at Pawtucket (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 SO). He followed that effort up with five innings in his first Triple-A victory on Tuesday at Ottawa (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO). Gorzelanny, who had not pitched in a regular-season Triple-A game until the 2006 season opener, posted an 8-5 record and 3.26 ERA in 23 starts for Altoona last year ...

" ... Radhames Liz and three relievers combined on a no-hitter as the Frederick Keys blanked the visiting Salem Avalanche, 3-0 ... The four-pitcher effort was just the fourth no-hitter in Keys' history ...  Liz was absolutely dominant throughout his five-inning stint. The 22-year-old righty struck out 13 batters while walking three. Neil Sellers' popout to catcher Michael Russell to end the third frame marked the first time a batter even put the ball in play against him. Although Liz showed no signs of tiring, Keys manager Bien Figueroa did not allow him to return to the mound to start the sixth. After all, it was his first start of the year. "Going into the game, his limit was five innings or 85 pitches," said Figueroa. "After five innings he had thrown 81, so I couldn't put him back out there. I'm here to develop players, not provide no-hitters. Liz is one of the best arms we've got in this organization."  (MLB.com)

The day before ... " ... Luis Ramirez and three Keys relievers delivered a two-hit gem ...     Dayn Perry, FOXSports.com, begins his position-by-position analysis of prospects by checking in on the backstops.

" ...  1. Jeff Clement  ...  has awesome left-handed power to his credit, and his defense is coming along fairly well. He doesn't profile as a high-average hitter, and the plate discipline leaves much to be desired. But the power will carry him. Behind the plate, his throwing arm is sub-optimal, but he's otherwise a capable receiver. He'll good for 25-30 homers annually at the highest level. A strong showing in major league camp this spring may have accelerated his timetable."

" ... 4. Mike Napoli ...  For his minor league career, Napoli boasts an OBP of .377 and an SLG of .474. Oh, and he's also whacked 165 extra-base hits in 1,494 career at bats. To boot, Napoli is also a highly capable defensive backstop, so he certainly profiles as a quality regular in the bigs. He's one of the most underrated position prospects in the game today."

Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com, noting some mostly well-under-the-radar prospects :

" ...  C Gaby Sanchez ...  Marlins took the Miami product in the fourth round even though he didn't play his final year in school. All he did was win the New-York Penn League title by hitting .355 and show enough acumen behind the plate to let him continue to work back there this year. So far, he's caught two games and played first four times. He's reached base in all six games and the only reason he doesn't have a six-game hit streak is because after torching Hagerstown in the first three games of the season (9-15, 10 RBIs, homers in all three games), the Suns walked him four times. He's already got four multi-hit games that add up to a .522 average."

" ... CF Jordan Czarniecki ...   When you get taken in the 25th round out of college, there really are no expectations. The fact that Czarniecki has made it to Double-A already exceeds whatever they may have been. He's hit throughout his Minor League career (.291 average, .375 OBP) and even stole 30 bags back in 2004. He only played in 92 games in 2005, slipping him further off the radar. Now he's in a lineup with Top 50 members Ian Stewart and Troy Tulowitzki, not to mention better-known guys like Chris Ianetta, Matt Macri, Seth Smith, Joe Koshansky and even Joe Gaetti. Other than Ianetta, though, Czarniecki's been hotter than any of the "prospects." Through five games, he was hitting .381 with three homers and seven RBIs after going 7-for-15 in his first three games."

Nate Stephens, RotoWorld.com, looks at a possible 3B/1B in TB :

" ...  Wes Bankston ...  Originally an outfielder, he was moved to first base because of the team’s glut of outfield prospects. This spring he was told to give third base a shot. While Bankston has hit well while moving around from position to position, he still doesn’t get as much attention as the more high-profile players in the organization. However, he should be far from an afterthought when it comes to your minor league squad ...  In 2005, Bankston started the season in High-A Visalia and was quickly promoted to Double-A Montgomery after terrorizing California League pitchers for 17 games. He finished his 302 at-bats stint with Montgomery at .292/.363/.482 with a still solid 30 walks compared to 64 strikeouts ...  continued to play third in the early part of the minor league season ... With Aubrey Huff likely a goner via free agency this winter, perhaps the team is planning his successor. It’s more likely that Bankston won’t transition well and ends up back at first base. As long as his 6’4” frame continues to develop and his plate discipline doesn’t abandon him, that won’t be a problem. Bankston should be good for some 30-homer seasons in his prime, but his batting average is what will determine whether he’s just an average regular or something more."

Bryan Smith, The Baseball Analysts, on a new kid in Wrigley :

" ...  Sean Marshall  ... on my 2005 breakout list, though he saved his big jump for Arizona, 2006 -- became the Cubs fourth starter in the most non-Dusty move of the current manager's tenure. In the face of other, older (though not by much) options, Baker opted for a southpaw with a blend of poise and upside narrowly removed from A-ball. For that, he should be commended. A quick glance at Marshall's line (4.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) instills the image of a true rookie, producing nightmares of Steve Smyth for Cubs fans. However, Marshall was far better than his line suggests. His two-seam fastball was controlled and consistently down in the zone, producing 8 groundball outs. His cutter was a great mix, jamming right-handers, and his curve showed fantastic potential. He made one gaffe -- a belt-high fastball that Scott Rolen tatooed -- and was taken from the game too early to fix his own bases loaded mistake. While Marshall doesn't bring with him a ceiling that matches Cubs pitching prospects of old, the poise he showed Sunday was a welcome addition to the Cubs future plans."

Twins notes ... Jason Kubel looks to get more time in the minors ... Francisco Liriano might sneak some starts ...

" ...  Twins manager Ron Gardenhire will give Kubel more playing time this week. As much as he likes the look of the lineup with Kubel's lefthanded bat, Gardenhire might send Kubel down to sharpen his swing at Class AAA Rochester ...  "We have a roster move [coming up], and if he looks like he's pressing a little bit, then when I bring Sierra up here in a week I can send Koob out and let him get swinging. "You can see he's pressing. That's fine because he's been out a long time."

" ... There is evidence that the Twins are considering using lefthander Francisco Liriano as a starter. How soon is not known. Liriano has made two appearances out of the bullpen. The Twins want Liriano, one of the game's top starting pitching prospects, to build up stamina to start. His 22/3 innings of shutout relief -- during which he hit 98 miles per hour on the radar gun -- impressed scouts in attendance as well as the Twins. "He's like [Johan] Santana was, but he's ahead of Santana," Gardenhire said, "He has better pitches right now than Santana did at that age. Eventually, sure, you don't want to leave that out there in the bullpen. You want to use that. We'll see how it goes along."   (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

Cameron Maybin DET impressing so far.

" ...  Maybin, who turned 19 last week, is an electrifying player, who, at least through the first week of the season, has demonstrated that the Midwest League might not be enough of a challenge for an entire season. He had six hits, three for extra bases, and a walk in his first three games for West Michigan and also flashed some serious leather out in center, looking smooth and graceful as he tracked fly balls. Probably the best part of his initial foray into pro ball, however, is his approach. Maybin and the Tigers had a long, drawn-out negotiation process after the draft, causing him to miss out on playing last summer. But he had a big Instructional League and an impressive Spring Training, providing further evidence as to why he went so high in the draft."  (MLB.com)

Dustin McGowan TOR, looks like the pen might be his home.

" ...   McGowan dominated Sunday in his new role as a reliever, relying on a 94-96 mph fastball and a high-80s slider. He struck out three International League batters in his two scoreless innings of work, with the only blemish a bloop hit ...  "I know Dustin's really excited about being a reliever," Blue Jays pitching coach Brad Arnsberg told the Syracuse Post Standard. "Our thinking is that he's going to get his innings in (as a reliever), and we just feel that if he's going to come up and help this big league club in the future, there's a real good chance that may be out of the bullpen."  (Baseball America)

John Franco, SportsBlurb, noticing some emerging young guns.

" ...  Gaby Sanchez ...  the Marlins’ fourth round pick in the 2005 draft, slipping in the draft because he sat out the 2005 season at the University of Miami due to a suspension. He won the short-season NY-Penn League batting title last season after signing with the Marlins, hitting .355-5-42 in 234 at-bats. Sanchez was primarily a third baseman in college, but Florida has moved him to catcher. Sanchez went 2-for-5 on Thursday, then hit a walk-off grand slam on Friday, then went 5-for-5 against Hagerstown on Saturday to improve to 9-for-16 on the season. Given his age (22), the Marlins will likely promote Sanchez to High-A Jupiter if he continues to hit well."

"  ... Mark McCormick ...  one of four first round picks by the Cardinals last year, and his outstanding velocity and dominant curveball allowed him to strike out 55 batters in 49 innings last year. Unfortunately, his inconsistent curveball and spotty command led to 28 walks and a .252 opponents’ average in 43 innings at Quad Cities. McCormick was pretty much the same pitcher in his debut, but the results were better – he struck out seven batters in six innings, allowing four walks but holding Kane County to just one hit. With his stuff, McCormick should be throwing plenty of one and two-hitters this year, even if he does allow four or five walks in the process. "

Angel Salome  " ... Salome, the 2005 Pioneer League Most Valuable Player, singled and scored in a three-run second inning, then doubled in the third and sixth. He led off the bottom of the eighth with his first home run of the season and singled again in the ninth. The 19-year-old designated hitter had three four-hit games during his 37-game stint with the Helena Brewers last year. He batted .415 with eight homers and 50 RBIs before a promotion to West Virginia, where he hit .254 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 29 games."  (MLB.com)

Catcher Gabriel Sanchez FLO  " ... On Saturday ...  the Greensboro Grasshoppers catcher went 5-for-5 ... to boost his batting average to .600 (9-for-16). But he's not just hitting singles. Sanchez opened the season Thursday with a 2-for-5 performance that included a tie-breaking, two-run, homer in the eighth inning against the Suns. The next day, with Greensboro trailing, 6-5, and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Sanchez connected for a walk-off grand slam. His heroics didn't end there. On Saturday, with his team again trailing by a run in the final frame, Sanchez blasted a two-run homer -- his second walk-off shot in as many days -- to help the Grasshoppers improve to a perfect 3-0 ... Last year, in his first professional season, the 22-year-old... leading the New York-Penn League in batting at .355 ... power numbers finally appear to be coming around. Last year, he had five home runs and 42 RBIs in 234 at-bats. After just three games in 2006, he has three homers, 10 RBIs and a whopping 1.267 slugging percentage."  (MLB.com)
