" ... Kevin Slowey of the Fort Myers Miracle, who
struck out the side on nine pitches to open the game ... Slowey earned the
honor to start for the West by virtue of the best numbers of any Minor League
pitcher this season. He leads the Minors with a 1.10 ERA, having struck out 92
batters in 81 2/3 innings while walking only seven. The Twins prospect threw
eight fastballs and one changeup, admitting that when he returned to the bullpen
after his brief outing, he got razzed a bit by teammates who asked if he might
not need to throw a few more pitches just to get in his work for the night."

Making progress, but staying put - Edinson Volquez TEX :
" ... general manager Jon Daniels ... said
Friday that, barring injury, he has no plans to bring hot Edinson Volquez to the
majors shortly. Volquez extended his scoreless innings string to 19 at Triple-A
Oklahoma on Thursday. In his last five starts, Volquez, who turns 23 on July 3,
has 46 strikeouts and 14 walks while compiling a 2.45 ERA ... "He has
shown improved command of his fastball, and he's re-establishing himself as a
quality option for us," Daniels said. "That's what you want to see from somebody
in the minors." (Dallas Morning News)
Worries about Andy Marte beginning to fade :
" ... Marte is coming back from a powerful
roadtrip. Marte homered in three consecutive games, June 10-12 in Charlotte. He
also comes into [Saturday's] game with homers in each of the last two games in
Durham. In the eight games on the trip, Marte hit .321 (9-28) with a double,
five home runs, 10 RBI, three walks and nine runs scored." (Buffalo Bisons)

Chris
Kline, Baseball America, on Andy Marte CLE :
" ... The problems go back to at least last season
when Marte was at Triple-A Richmond and quite possibly to the year before while
he was at Double-A Greenville. He started getting into bad habits with his
swing, collapsing his back side, resulting in a huge uppercut. That mechanical
flaw is still evident now, even if Marte has shown signs of life by hitting .302
with five homers so far in June ... manager Torey Lovullo said. "What I
remember when I managed against him three years ago, he was a pretty special
creature. He's got great makeup, he's agile as a third baseman, he's got good
arm strength and he hits and he hits for power. There's a lot of tools there,
but he's had some fundamental breakdowns in his game and we are fine-tuning
those, getting him into our system and showing him what we expect from a major
league player."
It just isn't working out for BJ Upton TB.
" ... Durham Bulls shortstop B.J. Upton was
arrested early this morning in Chapel Hill and charged with driving while
intoxicated ... driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz sedan on East Franklin Street
at about 3:30 a.m., according to a police report. A police officer stopped him
for traveling 51 mph in a 30 mph zone, the report said ... released on a
written promise to appear in court." (The News & Observer)
Scott Rex, OnDeck, with a heads-up
on Anibal Sanchez :
" ... RHP Anibal Sanchez ... whiffing 10 batters
in 6 shutout frames of 4-hit ball ... is just 2-6 this season despite a
solid 3.52 ERA. He once again leads the SL in punchouts with 86 in 76.2 innings
pitched. There could be two spots open in the Marlins rotation in August and
September. Yusmeiro Petit would get one of those spots but the other could go to
Sanchez."

then gave up singles to Luis Perez and Gregorio Petit to open the eighth. He
struck out David Castillo but allowed a run-scoring groundout to Cameron
Coughlan, who stole second, and walked Luke Appert. That was it for the
20-year-old right-hander as Matt Farnum worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his
first save. Hurley, a first-round draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2004, threw
71 of 112 pitches for strikes. He fell one out shy of his longest outing of the

Dayn Perry, FOXSports.com,
reviews his Top 10 prospect picks and grades their performances thus far :
" ... 1. Delmon Young
... In 20 games of action this season, Young put up a batting line
of .342 AVG/.381 OBP/.408 SLG at AAA-Durham, but the real story, of course, is
that he was suspended for 50 games for flinging his bat at an umpire ...
eligible to return on June 19, but the lost development time particularly for
a prospect who's yet to shine at the Triple-A level will be critical. He has
much to prove. 2006 Grade: F "
" ... 7. Andy Marte
... has handled International League pitching with aplomb before, but he
got off to a miserably slow start at AAA-Buffalo this season. He's now hitting a
mediocre .261 AVG/.329 OBP/.404 SLG, but his batting line in June is a more
respectable .308 AVG/.333 OBP/.500 SLG. Overall, however, he's languishing a
bit. The Indians were probably right to show patience with Marte and give him
another season in the minors. 2006 Grade: C+ "
" ... 10. Billy Butler
... defense in the outfield calls to mind a crumbling statue, is all about
the bat. In 2006, he's hitting .310 AVG/.370 OBP/.484 SLG at AA-Wichita despite
being only 20 years of age. The raw power numbers aren't terribly impressive,
but overall it's a solid performance considering the context. A good but not
great season for Butler thus far. 2006 Grade: B "
SD's top pitching prospect could be heading for a DL stay :
" ... last year's
first-round choice, pitcher Cesar Carrillo, the club talked of shutting
him down for the rest of the season. Carrillo, 21, is to meet with Padres
physician Jan Fronek ... to go over results from an MRI exam on his
right elbow. If we need to be cautious and shut him down, we will, said Grady
Fuson, the club's vice president of scouting and player development. We could
always get him innings later in the (Arizona) Fall League. ...
The Padres recently expressed trade interest in Indians Triple-A
third baseman Andy Marte but were told he's unavailable. (San Diego
Union Tribune)
CINCY gets its man :
" ... Drew Stubbs
was true to his word. The Reds' first-round draft pick said after being selected
last week that he expected to sign quickly, and it took him just over a week.
Stubbs made it official Wednesday ... The eighth overall pick in the draft
received a $2 million bonus and will report to Billings this weekend to begin
his professional career. Reds senior director of scouting Chris Buckley said he
was pleased to have the first-round pick in the fold so quickly ...
Stubbs, a center fielder known for his athleticism, hit .342 in 62 games for the
University of Texas this season. He had 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 58 RBIs,
stole 26 bases in 32 attempts and posted a .439 on-base percentage. Many believe
he's skilled enough defensively to be an elite-level outfielder in the majors
right now, but Stubbs needs to work on making more contact as he begins his
journey through the minors. He struck out 60 times in 243 at-bats this year.

" ... The Tampa Bay Devil Rays promoted Biscuits
stopper Juan Salas to Class AAA Durham today. Salas was 3-0 with 14 saves
and a 0.00 ERA with Montgomery this season. He allowed 13 hits and totaled 52
strikeouts in 342/3 innings. He has blown three saves. After allowing only five
hits in his first 19 appearances, Salas has given up eight hits in his last
five. Salas converted from third baseman to pitcher two years ago and has jumped
through Tampa Bays system." (Montgomery Advertiser)
Bryan Smith, Baseball Analysts,
begins to put together a new list of pitching prospects with the graduation of
all of his top dogs to MLB (Billingsley the latest) :
" ... Nick Adenhart
... he has been dominant in the Midwest League, pitching well in
all-but-one outing on the season. While his strikeout numbers pale in comparison
to others in low-A, like Wade Davis or Brandon Erbe, Adenhart shows more
pitchability than both. The Angels have no need to rush him, so I just don't see
the negatives here. Big stuff, a healthy right arm, a coddled future and a bunch
of pitchability. He belongs."
" ... Matt Garza ...
Twins knew they were drafting a right arm with a lot of stuff last June, but I
doubt they thought the player might be ready to contribute by September, 2006.
Expect the Twins to develop a solid long-term plan this winter, and when they do
so, expect Garza to be featured prominently."
" ... Jeremy Sowers ...
makes up for any lack of stuff with the extraordinary ability to keep the ball
down. Sowers has been consistently dominant in the IL this season, and despite
problems in the back end of the rotation, the Indians have not backed down. They
will be patient with Sowers -- and their seven figure free agents -- even if it
detracts from the 2006 win-loss record. So, for now, Sowers is one of the
minors' top 6 pitching prospects, but perhaps the closest to Major League
success."

Padres get their first rounder in the fold :
" ... Matt Antonelli
agreed to a deal worth $1,575,000 with the Padres on Monday, six days after
being selected with the 17th pick overall in the draft. The 6-foot, 198-pound
Wake Forest third baseman ... a first-team All-ACC selection this year after
batting .333 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs in 55 games ... Padres scouting
chief Grady Fuson likens Antonelli to Blue Jays infielder Aaron Hill, with
better athleticism. Antonelli's foot speed, arm, glove and right-handed bat were
graded above average ... As a major leaguer, Antonelli "should hit .280 with 15
or more home runs with a good on-base-percentage," Fuson said. " (San
Diego Union Tribune)
Dodgers about to add one more prospect to their lineup :
" ... the Dodgers are
close to promoting starting pitcher Chad Billingsley from triple-A Las
Vegas to make his debut Thursday at San Diego or Friday in an interleague game
at Oakland. The Dodgers could retain a 12-man pitching staff by promoting
Billingsley and activating Kent while placing Gagne on the disabled list and
sending rookie Joel Guzman to Las Vegas. Slipping Billingsley into the rotation
Thursday is appealing to the Dodgers for two reasons. It would enable them to
avoid handing another start to Odalis Perez or Jae Seo, while also giving
struggling Brett Tomko an extra day of rest." (LA Times)
Scott Thorman, Jason Bartlett and Josh Fields
are among the prospects included in
Bryan Smith's piece at TheBaseballAnalysts on youngsters blocked within
their organizations.
" ... Thorman ... While
handing the everyday spot to him would be accepting some loss in terms of power
(his ISO is only about .240 in AAA), it would help in the on-base percentage
column. Thorman's reduced strikeout numbers would help get more batting average
from the position, and while Thorman doesn't walk at LaRoche's rate, he does so
at an acceptable pace; his OBP is .049 points higher than LaRoche's, albeit at a
lower level. Given his recent home run hot streak, which has helped double his
home run rate over two weeks, the Braves would be best suited to try the flavor
of the week. If that doesn't work, perhaps a trade would."
" ... Currently 26, Bartlett is hitting
.306/.328/.445 in Triple-A. Obviously, he isn't a star shortstop; he never walks
and shows gap power at best. However, Bartlett represents a vast improvement
over Castro and Punto. This is a point that pundits universally agree on, now
it's the Twins turn."
" ... This season, Fields has been
other-worldly, hitting .343/.432/.599. Strikeouts? Still excessive, 63 in 207
at-bats ... we know that the numbers are coming down. But even when they
reach a middle ground between last year and this season, Fields will be a worthy
bargaining chip for a team dedicated to Joe Crede. The Oklahoma State
quarterback offers fantastic power, a lot of patience, and tons of athleticism.
Even with the strikeouts, in the next nine months, some team will bite at Josh
Fields."
Baseball America announces its choice as college player of the year :
" ... Andrew Miller's
13-2, 2.11 season stands as a key reason for North Carolina's first College
World Series berth since 1989 ... Miller, all 6 feet and 6 inches of him,
can't hide from the attention now. His dominant junior season, in which he
posted a 119-36 strikeout-walk ratio and allowed seven extra-base hits (and only
one home run) in 111 innings, not only helped him meet a personal goal of
reaching Omaha, but also earned him Baseball America's College Player of the
Year award."

It's the Mets' phenom, Mike Pelfrey at the top of the
Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America:
" ... Pelfrey ... started slow
after his promotion to Double-A, but the Wichita State alum is firing on all
cylinders now. In his last three starts, he has allowed just three runs in 19
innings while fanning 22 and walking four. He even had three hits in one of
those starts. There are still concerns about his secondary stuff, but the former
Shocker has blown away hitters with an electric fastball that sits in the
mid-90s that he is able to command to all parts of the zone."
" ... 3. Chris Carter [ARZ]
... 17th-round pick in 2004 out of Stanford, Carter is hitting for average
and power for the Sidewinders. The 23-year-old batted .476 with four homers last
week, upping his overall numbers to .291/.396/.479 with eight bombs and 29 RBIs
in 213 at-bats."
" ... Miguel Montero ...
From not-so-hot to the team photo, apparently Montero has been reading his
weekly Hot Sheet. The Diamondbacks catcher bounced back to hit .379 with a homer
and seven RBIs over his last 27 at-bats."
Not-so-hot " ... Gio Gonzalez [PHI} ... Over his
last two starts, Gonzalez has allowed 10 earned runs on fourteen hits in 11
innings. Solid stuff, but when bad things happen, he just needs to let it go."
Over at RotoAmerica,
It's Howie Kendrick atop the Look Who's Hot list :
" ... Kendrick ... At some point, a guy
hitting .407 in Triple-A will need to have a spot cleared for him at the next
level."
" ... 2. Kevin Slowey
... A 1.10 ERA and just seven walks to 92 Ks in 81 2/3 innings. Will be
promoted to Double-A after the Florida State League All-Star game (yeah, hes
going)."
" ... 7. Scott Thorman,
... .956 OPS, good eye at the plate
.will the Braves move him to the outfield or
move Adam LaRoche out of the organization to make room?"
Some familiar names on the Look Who's Cold list :
" ... 3. B.J. Upton ...
Seemed to have improved in the field before a recent three-error game.
Organization just needs to wake up and move him to 3B or the outfield ...
5. Andy Marte ... The overrated Marte is hitting just
.259/.328/.390 in Triple-A. Wheres the power? On the other hand, Clevelands
other 3B prospect, Kevin Kouzmanoff, is hitting .423/.475/.674
in Double-A. Time for Martes performance to catch up to his alleged tools."
A tip of the cap to the outstanding players / pitchers of the week :
TEXAS " ...
Ubaldo Jimenez [COL] ... After winning his second Pitcher of the Week award
last week, Jimenez made it number three this week with a dominant performance
against Arkansas. He shutout the Travs 3-0, tossing a complete game, while
allowing just four runners to reach while fanning 10 ... The hard throwing
Dominican is rated by Baseball America as the Rockies' fifth best prospect.
After missing much of 2004 with a stress fracture, Jimenez rebounded last year,
pitched well, and was promoted to Tulsa in the middle of the season."
(Texas League)
TEXAS " ... Mitch Maier
[KC] ... In five of the six games the outfielder had two hits ...
His nine RBI were second most in the league this week, while his nine runs
scored were tops in the league. He was also among the weekly league leaders in
on-base percentage and slugging percentage ... has played in the outfield
since joining the Kansas City organization. He is a solid defender, with both
good range and a good arm. Last year in the California League Maier hit .336 in
50 games with 26 doubles and 8 home runs." (Texas League)
PCL " ... Chris Carter
used a pair of 3-for-5, four-RBI showings to take home the PCL Batter of the
Week Award. Carter also tallied a .476 batting average and slugged four homers
during the week ... Edinson Volquez wasn't able
to earn a decision in either of his starts for Oklahoma RedHawks during the
week, but was able to earn PCL Pitcher of the Week honors after giving up just
four hits and two runs in 13 innings of work." (Pacific Coast League)
SOUTHERN " ... right-hander Joel
Hanrahan
[LAD} ... tossed 13.0 scoreless innings, going 2-0 in his two starts ... lOn
June 5 against Mobile, he hurled 6.0 shutout innings, fanning eight hitters
while allowing just a sixth-inning single and walking five. He also went 2-for-3
at the plate, hitting his second career triple and scoring on a squeeze play.
The righty continued his dominance June 10 against Huntsville, tossing 7.0
scoreless innings and allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 ...
tied for the league lead with 7 wins and ranks fifth with a 2.58 ERA. The
24-year-old ...selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the
2000 draft." (Southern League)
INTERNATIONAL " ... Outfielder
DAVID MURPHY, barely two weeks into his Triple-A career, is already causing
severe headaches for International League pitchers. The 24-year-old has hit
safely in 14 of the 16 games ... including his last nine in a row ... The
highly-touted outfield prospect has done a little bit of everything since making
the jump to Triple-A. In 16 games he's hitting .339 with 3 HR, 13 RBI, six
doubles, two triples, two stolen bases, and 10 runs scored. On the season Murphy
has hit 23 doubles, tied for second most in all of Minor League Baseball. He's
also the defending Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year."
(International League)
CAROLINA " ... Trevor Crowe
[CLE] ... has his safely in eight straight games, during which time
his average has increased from .297 to .329. The switch-hitting center fielder
leads the Carolina League in hits (72) and on-base percentage (.449), while his
29 steals rank second." (MLB.com)
FLORIDA STATE " ... Kevin
Slowey
[MIN] ... has dominated the Florida State League all season, and this week
was no different. The right-hander hasn't given up more than two earned runs in
a start all season, and he didn't give up any this week, lowering his
league-leading ERA to 1.10. This week, he held both Tampa and Clearwater
scoreless in two wins.." (MLB.com)
Young ARZ moundsman on the way up :
" ... After recording nine straight victories,
no losses and a 1.63 earned-run average, JetHawks starting pitcher Greg Smith
finally got the call that surprised no one when he was told by the organization
on Sunday that he will be moving up to the club's Double-A Tennessee Smokies ...
Smith has been nothing short of astounding this season. After going 8-5 with a
4.13 ERA for the Diamondbacks' rookie-league Missoula club, Smith has taken
things to a new level this year. He has allowed eight earned runs and 36 hits in
his last 69²/³ innings pitched, while striking out 58 and walking 23."
(Antelope Valley Press)
Tidbits from the International League :
" ... Josh Fields has
batted .400 with a home run, seven RBIs and six runs scored in his last nine
games
... Ryan Sweeney has hit .361 in his last nine games with a homer,
five RBIs and three runs ... Carlos Pena has batted .314 in his
last 10 contests with a home run, nine RBIs and seven runs scored ...
Elijah Dukes has batted .333 with two homers, seven
RBIs and 11 runs scored in his last 10 contests ...
B.J. Upton has batted just .163 in the last 10 games and begins this week
in a 2-for-20 funk ... Dustin Pedroia has hit .333 in his last
nine games ... Sergio Santos has hit in 18 consecutive games
entering this week. Santos has collected nine multi-hit contests in that span to
raise his season average from .207 to .263." (MLB.com)
Snippets from the PCL :
" ... Ryan Shealy has hit .314
with three homers, 12 RBIs and six runs scored in his last nine games ...
Jeff
Salazar batted .467 with seven RBIs and seven runs scored in his last
seven contests ... Right-hander Ben Hendrickson has pitched well
in his last four starts for the Sounds, allowing just seven earned runs in his
last 27 2/3 innings while fanning 24 in that span ... Larry Broadway
batted .394 with three RBIs and five runs scored in the team's last 10 contests
... Paul McAnulty batted .432 with four RBIs and three runs scored
in his last 10 games ... Howie Kendrick has
hit .476 in his last 10 games with three homers, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored.
He has collected 11 hits in his last 22 bats entering the start of this week ...
Adam Jones hit .308 with two homers, 12 RBIs
and seven runs scored in his last nine games." (MLB.com)

Michael Hindman,
Rangers' Farm Report, on some good news for TEX :
" ... Its starting to come
together for
Edinson Volquez (4.05 ERA) who fanned nine in seven shutout innings,
allowing just one hit and one walk. The 22 year old retired the final 14 hitters
he saw before leaving having thrown 98 pitches, 67 for strikes. Volquez now has
four consecutive quality starts under his belt and is third in the 16-team PCL
with 75 strikeouts. "He's had better velocity, up to 100 (mph) at our place,"
Oklahoma manager Mike Boulanger told the Omaha World-Heralds Rob White. "He was
96-97 tonight, which is plenty good enough, but I thought he pounded the strike
zone as well as I've seen him all year. He's a guy who just about anybody at the
game can point to and say, 'He's good.'" "Apparently that was one of his better
nights of the season," Omaha manager Mike Jirschele told White. "His numbers
would be a lot better if he threw like that every outing. He overmatched us. He
was getting his offspeed (pitch) over, too - his changeup especially. And he was
blowing his fastball by our hitters."
