" ...  Pitcher Hayden Penn won't begin his injury rehabiliation assignment at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. Manager Sam Perlozzo told reporters today that Penn will report to Triple-A Ottawa around July 15."  (Baltimore Sun)

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with another take on his pre-season ARZ prospect chart.

" ...  1) Carlos Quentin ...  .284/.413/.474 for Triple-A Tucson, underperforming compared to what he did at the same level last year. This is not uncommon, a player not hitting as well in his second Triple-A year as he did in the first. The theory is that this is due to discouragement. Quentin's status has slipped but I still think he is a good prospect."

" ...  4) Justin Upton ... .279/.348/.405 for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, certainly not spectacular numbers although the hitting context is not an easy one."

" ...  14) Miguel Montero ... ,.268/.369/.443 for Tennessee, 9 homers, 36 walks, 33 strikeouts in 246 at-bats. Not dominating but doing OK, showing good plate discipline and some pop."

" ... B.J. Upton had one of his weakest hitting months as a pro in June. But on the last night of the month on Friday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, he proved that old adage about there being no place like home. The leadoff man doubled and tripled in his first two at-bats, scored three runs and knocked in another as Durham topped the Norfolk Tides 8-4 in the opener of their two-game series and the Bulls' eight-game homestand. Upton got plenty of help from his friends in the Bulls' 13-hit attack. Delmon Young had his first homer of the season and two singles for four RBIs, while Kevin Witt added his 20th homer of the season and finished with a pair of RBIs. Upton, who has been selected to the Triple-A All-Star Game along with teammates Witt and catcher Shawn Riggans, came into the contest hitting just .194 for the month. But he was hitting .304 at DBAP. "B.J. was hitting the ball hard at people the whole road trip," Bulls manager John Tamargo said. And Upton agreed with his assessment. "That's the way it's been going," said Upton, who is a native of Norfolk. "But once you hit the ball, there's nothing you can do."   (Durham Herald-Sun)

He worked out of those innings by keeping the Defenders (34-44) off-balance with his change-up, curve, slider and a two-seam fastball that topped out in the mid-90s ... .Garza turned things around by pitching aggressively. The outfielder said he was willing to go anywhere for a chance to restart his career. "I told them I'd go back to Little League if they'd let me play," Hamilton said. Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon believes that the second chance is warranted, and he expects Hamilton to do everything he can to make good on it ...  Hamilton is grateful for the second chance but doesn't see himself getting any more. "I truly believe that this is my last chance," he said. "Not just in baseball, but when it comes down to it, maybe in life. You never know -- when you're out there using, it could be it for you. You could get something bad and be gone in the next second."  (MLB.com)

" ...  Rangers have traded lefthanded pitcher Fabio Castro to Philadelphia in exchange for lefthander Daniel Haigwood and cash considerations. ...  Haigwood was 2-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 appearances with Double-A Reading. He has 84 innings pitched with 85 strikeouts and 42 walks." (Dallas Morning News)

Dayn Perry, FOXSports, makes his picks, by position, as the best of the Double-A prospects :

" ...  1B — Joey Votto ...  was in the 2005 top 100, but he slumped last season. This year, he's had a tremendous first half at AA-Chattanooga: he's got a batting line of .318 AVG/.385 OBP/.568 SLG with 42 extra-base hits in 296 at bats. A number of great major leaguers once endured a lackluster season down on the farm (as Votto did last year), so there's nothing to say he won't become an impact talent in Cincinnati. Votto's very much back on track."

" ... SS — Brandon Wood ...  a great prospect for the Angels ...  In 2005, Wood proffered one of the greatest minor league seasons in the annals of the game, and this year he's managing another fine campaign. He ranks fourth in the Texas League with a .564 SLG, and he's also made good strides with his walk rate. To boot, Wood's 44 extra-base hits in 282 at-bats are a testimony to his raw-power skills. Going forward, the defense remains a bit of a question mark, but Wood's bat will play at any position."

" ... P — Philip Hughes ...  turned 20 only this week, yet he's still faring quite well against advanced hitters in the Eastern League. As you can see by his 2006 Top 100 ranking, he was highly thought of coming into the year, and Hughes' numbers at Trenton (62.1 innings, 64 strikeouts, 3.18 ERA) have done nothing to alter than assessment. He's had some injury problems in the past, but if he stays healthy, he's the best pitching prospect in baseball."

David Regan, RotoAmerica.com, moves on to pick the best of the outfield prospects.  In a minor surprise, Delmon Young doesn't show up until No. 3.

" ...  1. Justin Upton ...  I know I’m going to catch some heat for putting a guy with a .744 OPS at the top spot, but an 18 year-old holding his own in full-season ball is impressive. More impressive are Upton’s tools and scouting reports. He compares favorably to a young Ken Griffey Jr."

" ...  2. Matt Kemp ...   Easily the most impressive major-league debut by a minor leaguer this year. Kemp based seven home runs in his first 45 at-bats despite just two months above Class A ball. He might lack the at-bats to qualify for the mid-season RotoAmerica Top 100, but if he did, he’s be a top 5 guy."

" ... 6. Carlos Gonzalez ... Could easily top this list next year based on his natural talent. Off to a slow start, Gonzalez is tearing up the California League lately, raising his line to .309/.359/.551. He could stand to refine his plate discipline and work on the basepaths, but this is a special player."

Nate Stephens, RotoWorld.com, includes a lengthy note on Nick Adenhart  in his latest prospect report :

" ...   Looking for the next big-name player sure to shoot way up in mid-season and off-season prospect rankings? Then Adenhart is your guy. The right-hander was hardly a non-entity before the 2006 season, but he was seen as a long ways from the majors and still a bit of a gamble. Those who focused on his talent and took a chance on the former high school star are quite happy they did. ...  Assigned to Low-A Cedar Rapids to begin his 2006 campaign, Adenhart has shown better control, the same impressive secondary pitches, and even added another couple of MPH to his fastball. All those skills have resulted in a 2.11 ERA to go with a 93/23 K/BB ratio in 98 innings of work, thus ranking him third in the Midwest League in ERA and strikeouts. Adenhart more regularly hit 95 MPH with his fastball while in high school, but he can still dial it up there now when needed. However, he works primarily in the low-90s and complements his fastball with a fantastic changeup, a plus curve, and a useful slider ...  I like his chances of becoming a No. 2 starter, and adding a little more heat to his fastball as he bulks up could lead to even better production."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, reviews his BOS pre-season picks :

" ...  5) Jacoby Ellsbury ... Hitting .313/.395/.421 with 18 steals in 49 games for Class A Wilmington. Missed a month with a quad injury but is healthy now."

" ... 6) Clay Buchholz ...   2.74 in 13 starts for Greenville in the Sally League, 73/18 K/BB in 62 innings. Solid numbers, having a fine season, and will start showing up on top pitching prospect lists if he keeps this up."

" ... 15) Yahmed Yema ...  .297/.349/.483 for Greenville, heating up after a slow start. We need to see him at higher levels but I still think he is a major sleeper."

Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com, checks out a few of the Futures Game infielders, including SEA's Yung Chi Chen, just promoted today to Double-A :

" ...  has done nothing but hit since signing with the Mariners in 2004. He carried a .292 average into this season, his second full pro stint in Seattle's organization. The 22-year-old has shown the ability to run a little and hit for some power, as well. He raised his game a notch in the hitter-friendly California League, leading the circuit with his .342 average through 67 games this season. He also collected 25 extra-base hits, putting him on pace for a career-high .478 slugging percentage. His 21 steals had him fourth in the California League in that category ...  "He's swung the bat very well in Inland this year," said a scout who knows Chen. "Offensively, he can swing the bat, he can hit for some power. He's got kind of alley power. He's an average runner, a solid defender. He's just a good little baseball player."

" ... Scott Elbert was four outs away from a no-hitter. He ended up four outs away from a victory. Elbert took a no-hitter into the eighth inning ... before giving up an RBI single to Jemel Spearman as the Vero Beach Dodgers were beaten by the Daytona Cubs, 1-0 ... After striking out the first two batters in the eighth, Elbert (5-5) walked Joseph Simokaitis, who stole second base. The 21-year-old left-hander then got within a strike of fanning Spearman. Elbert had relied on his curve to register a career-high 13 strikeouts, but it failed him against Spearman, who put the Cubs (4-2) in front with a line drive single to center field ...  The former first-round draft pick walked four and went 7 2/3 innings in the longest stint of his career. He pitched two innings in relief in each of his previous two appearances as the Dodgers (3-3) were giving the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder experience out of the bullpen in between starts."  (MLB.com)

No quibble here ... Homer Bailey gets the nod as the top dog on Look Who's Hot at RotoAmerica

" ...  Homer Bailey ...Double-A proving to be little challenge for Reds phenom: 2 starts, 12 scoreless innings, including six hitless innings last time out. Perhaps the Reds finally will have a top-notch home-grown starting pitcher (think the anti-Chris Gruler)."

" ... 3. Philip Hughes ...  Last four starts: 0.96 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 28 innings. Will the Yankees resist multiple trade overtures for their phenom?"

And in the frozen section ... topping the Look Who's Cold :

" ... 1. Jarrod Saltalamacchia ... Average down to [.197] . So much for those late-season promotion talks."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, reviews his pre-season SF prospects :

" ...  2) Marcus Sanders ...  .213/.302/.265 in 54 games for San Jose in the Cal League. He's stolen 24 bases in 29 attempts, and he's drawn 25 walks in 211 at-bats, but there's been no power development and his numbers are off across the board. Very disappointing; I thought he was a breakthrough candidate."

" ... 3) Merkin Valdez ...  6.04 ERA in 28 innings in the PCL for Fresno, with a 29/21 K/BB and 30 hits allowed. I have a report that his mechanics are out of whack, and that certainly fits with the control problems evident in the numbers. I have kept the faith a long time with this one, but he appears to be stagnating and has made no progress refining his natural talent."

John Franco, SportsBlurb.com, checks out some of the guys who failed to make the roster for the Futures Game :

" ...  I’m not sure what more Matt Garza could have done to make his case ...  has dominated the competition at two levels this year, and has the pedigree as a first round pick in 2005. Garza was 5-1 with a 1.42 ERA at High-A Fort Myers, and has a record of 4-1, 2.63 since his promotion to Double-A New Britain. Garza has posted a combined strikeout-to-walk ratio of 100:24 in 81.1 innings this season, allowing a .178 average."

" ... The heir apparent to [Brandon] Wood’s crown as Cal League slugger is infielder Mark Reynolds, a 22-year old shortstop for the ... the Diamondbacks’ High-A affiliate. Reynolds is about eight months older than Wood was when he tore up the league, and he leads the league with an OPS of 1.083. Through 66 games, Reynolds has hit 20 home runs and posted an average of .336; he has also hit 16 doubles and has an impressive .419 OPS. Reynolds is obviously benefiting from the hitter-friendly environment in the Cal League, but as Wood has shown, a player who hits well there is fully capable of continuing to hit at the next level."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, checks up on his pre-season ranking of the BAL system :

" ...  2) Brandon Snyder ...  Hit just .194/.237/.340 in 38 games for Class A Delmarva. Now at short-season Aberdeen, is 7-for-25 in six games. Sample sizes are too small to draw broad conclusions, though I note that his strikeout rate (61 in 44 games) is frighteningly high."

" ... 7) Garrett Olson ...  2.77 in 14 starts for Frederick, 77/19 K/BB in 81 innings. Just promoted to Double-A, was hit hard in his first start. A fine prospect."

" ... 13) Radhames Liz ... 2.72 ERA in 14 starts for Frederick, 89/40 K/BB in 76 innings, just 48 hits allowed. Impressive K/IP and H/IP ratios but control is still an issue."

Lots of different names on the Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet.

" ...  1. Anibal Sanchez ... In case you weren't impressed by his complete-game shutout last Monday against Chattanooga, how's this for an encore: Sanchez made his major league debut last night in an emergency start in Yankee Stadium and pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. The 22-year-old ... scattered seven hits--six of them singles--without issuing a walk while striking out two."

" ... 4. Philip Hughes ...   Finally starting to dominate Double-A. In his last four starts he is 2-1, 0.96 with 33 strikeouts in 28 innings. Yup, that will do it for you."

" ... 9. Evan Longoria ...  The third overall pick has shined in his first week of pro ball and it is unlikely he will be in the New York-Penn League for long. The Long Beach State product has hit safely in his first five games and is 10-for-24 with two homers, a double and a triple."

A TEX starter among those cited in the Not-So-Hot list :

" ... Thomas Diamond ... It has been a rough ride for this RoughRider. Diamond is now 1-3, 7.71 in June with 24 strikeouts and 18 walks in 23 June innings. 50 walks in 69 innings have been a big part of his 4.67 ERA on the season."

Is that Baseball Analysts' Bryan Smith who sits in with Aaron Fitt, Matt Meyers and  Chris Kline on the Hot Sheet?

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with a re-look at his pre-season PIT prospects :

" ...  1) Neil Walker ... ,.273/.317/.379 in 35 games for Class A Lynchburg. Sample too small to draw conclusions. His season started late due to a wrist injury."

" ... 2) Andrew McCutchen ... .277/.343/.406 with 14 steals in 68 games for Class A Hickory. Numbers aren't terrific but he is holding his own in his full-season debut."

A tip 'o the cap to some of the week's outstanding peformers :

PCL  " ...  Jered Weaver is taking home his first PCL Pitcher of the Week award after tossing a two-hit shutout and tallying 14 strikeouts against a single walk in a June 23rd contest ... The 24 year-old righthander has become the first pitcher to collect two complete-game shutouts in the PCL this season ...holds a 5-and-1 record and remains among the League Leaders with 82 strikeouts and 2.15 ERA."  (Pacific Coast League)

PCL  " ...  Chris Snelling racked up five doubles on nine hits and posted a .429 average in five games to become the PCL Player of the Week ...  Currently riding a nine-game hitting streak, Snelling has enjoyed a recent move to the outfield from his usual Designated Hitter position as he has been in the field in eight games and has collected multiple hits on three occasions during the streak."  (Pacific Coast League)

SOUTHERN  " ...  second baseman Eric Patterson sizzled at the plate last week, hitting .480 with a home run, 6 RBI, 3 stolen bases, a .481 on-base percentage and a .760 slugging percentage to earn Hitter of the Week honors. Patterson is currently enjoying a 6-game hitting streak ...  tied for second in the league with 6 triples and is tied for third with 23 stolen bases. He also ranks fourth with 81 hits and tenth with a .296 batting average."

SOUTHERN  " ...   T.J. Nall tossed 14.0 shutout innings and fanned 20 hitters to earn Pitcher of the Week honors ...  enjoying a 6-game winning streak ... As a starter, he is 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA and has walked just nine while striking out 57. Nall is currently fourth in the league with 82 strikeouts while ranking eighth with a 2.59 ERA. The 25-year-old ... selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the eighth round of the 1999 draft."  (Southern League)

EASTERN  " ... outfielder Brandon Moss ... had an excellent week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .478 (11-for-23) with four doubles, one triple, one home run, seven runs scored, five RBI, three walks and a .870 slugging percentage in six games. The 6'0", 180 lb. slugger, who is ranked second in the league in doubles (22) and fourth in RBI (46), had at least one hit in each of the games he played in last week and enters this week with a seven-game hitting streak ...  selected by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the June 2002 draft."   (Eastern League)

NYP  " ...  Jairo de la Rosa [TB]  ...  shortstop kicked off this season with a bang and hasn't shown any signs of slowing down in the first six games of the season. In the season opener, de la Rosa went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs in a loss to Aberdeen. He followed that up with a perfect 4-for-4 performance in an 8-7 win over Staten Island on Friday. The 20-year-old is batting .440 on the young season."  (MLB.com)

APPY  " ... Victor Santana ...  has only played three games this season, but he's already had a multiple home run performance and a five-RBI night. The 22-year-old outfielder slammed two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Blue Jays to a 14-3 win over Elizabethton on Saturday. He also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to open up the season with a win over Princeton on Wednesday."  (MLB.com)

California League notes from MLB.com :

" ...  OF Shaun Cumberland [TB] went into the All-Star break with 66 RBIs, tying him with Lancaster's Carlos Gonzalez for the most in the minors, after belting a grand slam and finishing with five RBIs in the Oaks' 9-5 victory over Stockton on Saturday. Cumberland isn't the only Visalia player to rank among the best statistically -- SS Reid Brignac capped the first half with 98 hits, second in all of the minors only to Lancaster's Chris Rahl (99)."

" ...  RHP Eric Hurley, also a member of the Cal League All-Star team, was named last week to the U.S. team that will compete in the Futures Game, to take place July 9 at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. Hurley, one of two members of the Rangers organization to be selected, enters the league All-Star break with a 5-3 record and 2.92 ERA in 14 starts for the Blaze. He ranks fourth in the league in ERA and his total of 87 strikeouts is third-best."

" ... Ubaldo Jimenez allowed just one hit and struck out 10 over five-plus innings as Tulsa blanked Midland, 3-0 ...  Jimenez (9-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but lost it when Kevin Melillo led off with a single into shallow right field. The 22-year-old was replaced after walking the first two batters in the sixth. The right-hander, who has won his last six starts and his last seven decisions, was dominant early, fanning seven of the first nine batters. He has yielded just three earned runs and 17 hits over those six starts and lowered his ERA to 2.45. It was Jimenez's fourth game with double-digit strikeouts."  (MLB.com)

Philip Hughes NYA ... a move?

" ...  As an indication that the Brewers are preparing for the possibility of trading leftfielder Carlos Lee, they sent Lee Thomas ... watch New York Yankees prospect Philip Hughes pitch Friday night  ... Thomas, a special assistant to general manager Doug Melvin, watched Hughes pitch a spectacular game - 8 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 10 strikeouts. Hughes (4-3, 3.18) is considered the top pitcher in the farm system of the Yankees, who have definite interest in Lee, with outfielders Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield on the disabled list."  (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

Ah, that's it.  Just wondering why a 2006 pick, with just a couple of pro innings under his belt, would advance so quickly to AAA.  SEA's PCL club just a little short in the pen, so Austin Bibens-Dirkx:, a 16th round pick this month, got the call.  Seems he's a true sidearm pitcher.

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, goes over his pre-season Yankee prospect list and updates the reviews :

" ...  2) Jose Tabata ...  .315/.376/.452 with 11 steals in 63 games for Class A Charleston in the Sally League. Remember, he is just 17 years old and doing this in full-season ball. An outstanding prospect."

" ... 8) Austin Jackson ...   .262/.350/.358 with 24 steals in 70 games for Charleston. Holding his own, stealing bases, drawing walks, not much power yet."

" ... 14) Brett Gardner ...  .325/.430/.413 with 33 steals in 68 games combined between Tampa and Trenton, 44 walks. Not a lot of power, but speed and patience look excellent, giving him potential as a leadoff guy."
