John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews his pre-season SD and OAK Top 20s.
SD " ... 2) George
Kottaras ... .275/.393/.454 for Mobile, showing good plate discipline
and moderate power. I still like him a lot."
SD " ... 4) Chase Headley
....279/.369/.443 for Class A Lake Elsinore, with 43 walks. Good plate
discipline, moderate power. Will be interesting to see how he does next year in
Double-A."
OAK " ... 4) Cliff Pennington
... .203/.302/.277 in 46 games for Class A Stockton, one of the biggest
disappointments in the minors this year."
OAK " ... 5) Travis Buck
... .316/.383/.518 combined between Stockton and Midland, with 11 steals in 13
attempts. Not a ton of home run power, but 34 doubles already. Similar to Andre
Ethier?."
Bryan Smith, TheBaseballAnalysts,
with a look at revisions on the WSox, especially what to do with breakout
prospect Josh Fields.
" ... Fields. As a pro ...
has yet to play a single position besides third base. The Sox have let this ride
up to Triple-A, up to Fields' breakout as a prospect. Third base is already
manned by someone sub-30, and will continue to be as Joe Crede just entered
arbitration in 2006. One option is to trade Fields while his value is high ...
My belief is that Fields should begin playing left field now, for the rest of
the season, and continue to do so in the Arizona Fall League. Next season,
Fields should compete with the other current members of the Knights outfield for
the left field spot ... with a half-season, the AFL, and Spring Training,
I think he would be ready. Some would argue his bat already is. Fields has both
33 extra-base hits and walks in Triple-A, both in just 243 at-bats. He has
stolen 13 bags in 17 attempts (there's that athleticism, again), and is sporting
a .957 OPS. The power and patience are there, and he would add another home run
threat to a lineup in Chicago chock-full of them. The question mark is his
contact ability. With 78 strikeouts so far, Fields is whiffing in an atrocious
30+ percent of his at-bats ... my concern about Josh Fields would be that
in the Major Leagues, there's a good chance his batting average will look like
Crede's did, in 2004."
Zach Chalifour, TheRotoTimes, on Yovani Gallardo MIL
" ... Another pitcher with
ace potential, Gallardo has been one of the most consistent pitchers this year
in the minors and should make a strong case for a number of minor league player
of the year awards if he can have a second half anything like his first three
months this season. A second-round pick out of a Texas high school in the 2004
draft ... 2006 campaign started at High-A Brevard County where he flat-out
dominated the Florida State League hitting. Highlighted by a start in which he
took a no-hitter into the ninth inning last month, Gallardo made 13 starts for
the Manatees and went 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA. Most impressive is the fact that in
77.2 innings he allowed just 54 base hits and struck out 103 batters. His
first-half performance warranted a quick promotion to Double-A Huntsville after
the FSL All-Star break. The story has been identical at Huntsville, as Southern
League hitters has done even worse against Gallardo ...has yet to give up a run
through 14 innings and has allowed just seven hits and issued only two walks
while striking out 16."
Will Lingo, Baseball America, with some notes on the Futures Game,
particularly a pair of missing stars.
Justin Upton? " ... that was
one of the toughest calls we had to make when assembling the roster. More
advanced players have a little bit of an advantage over prospects at lower
levels, but you always have to consider the absolute cream of the crop no matter
where they're playing. With Justin, it came down to two factors: there were
plenty of other good candidates for the U.S. outfield, and there were plenty of
other good Diamondbacks candidates. With a limit of two players per
organization, we went with Carlos Gonzalez and Stephen Drew this year, figuring
we'll get another shot at Justin next year."
Jay Bruce? " ... a good example of how
the Futures Game puzzle works. With the Reds, Homer Bailey is a given. When you
look at the rest of their candidates, Votto makes perfect sense because he's a
World first baseman who's having a strong year, and that position is
traditionally hard to fill on the World team. So right there you've filled your
Reds quota before you even really get to discuss Jay Bruce. He was on the list
of candidates, to be sure."

" ... Only a game into his comeback, Jose Canseco was
traded Wednesday after seeking the move because of family obligations. Golden
Baseball League approved the trade, sending Canseco, 42, to the Long Beach
Armada as a designated hitter/pitcher. Canseco leaves the San Diego Surf Dawgs
after a dismal first outing Monday ... went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts
and he was hit by a pitch." (AP)
Dayn Perry, FOXSports,
selects the top Triple-A prospects :
" ... 1B James Loney ... healthy
again and having a big impact for the Dodgers in Las Vegas ... has always
had the scouting reports in his favor, but a long string of injuries has
dampened his production as a pro. Well, his long-anticipated breakout season is
ongoing. This year, Loney ranks eighth in the PCL with a .415 OBP, and he ranks
fifth with an SLG of .549. Las Vegas is a hitter's haven, and much of value this
season is tied up in his .374 batting average. Still, it's good to see Loney
healthy and hitting once again."
" ... SS Stephen Drew ... hitting .285
AVG/.342 OBP/.459 SLG which is respectable but not outstanding for someone
playing half his games in run-inducing Tucson. Drew may be suffering a bit from
a rapid promotion schedule (he opened the year in the PCL despite never proving
himself in Double-A), but long term he remains a strong prospect."
" ... OF Chris Young ... has
exceptional secondary hitting skills, speed on the bases and a tremendous glove
in center. He got off to a slow start this season as he recovered from a broken
hand, but he's been hitting since then. With Justin Upton in the fold and
playing center, it's not certain what Young's long-term future will be, but
he'll hit at any position and with any organization."
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews his pre-season WAS prospect chart :
" ... 2) Kory Casto ...
.295/.414/.520 with 13 homers, 56 walks, 60 strikeouts in 281 at-bats for
Double-A Harrisburg. Adjusting very well to Double-A. It will be interesting to
see how the Nats work him and Zimmerman into the same lineup eventually."
" ... 3) Bill Bray ... 3.98 ERA with 45/9
K/BB in 32 innings for Triple-A New Orleans. Best attribute is strong strikeout
rate. Should be ready to help in the pen next year."
" ... 4) Larry Broadway ...
.311/.368/.471 in 92 games for New Orleans. Solid performance, should be ready
next year if they find a slot for him."

Yes, I know it's in the California League, a hitting haven, but Brignac is just
20 and is in the top seven in the Triple Crown categories after hitting .398 in
June. Anytime you have a shortstop with a .564 SLG, I don't care what the league
is, you want to see what he can do on a larger stage."
" ... C Angel Salome
... an exciting young player I couldn't pass up.
Salome, just turned 20, got some ink by hitting .415 in Helena last year. He's
hitting over .300 for West Virginia in the South Atlantic League now and showing
a little pop and a little speed from behind the plate."
" ... OF Jay Bruce ... I wasn't sure
about this pick until I saw that the teenager who was the Reds' first-round pick
in 2005 is tied for the Minor League lead in extra-base hits with 50 in his
first full season. Overall, he's hit .317 with 12 homers, 33 doubles and 57 RBIs
(.404 in June) with Dayton in the Midwest League."
" ... SP Jose Arredondo ... I keep
talking about how hitting-friendly the California League is, and here we have a
22-year-old who had a 2.30 ERA over 15 starts there. In his 90 innings,
Arredondo gave up just 62 hits and struck out 115 while yielding 35 walks. It's
hard to ignore the .198 batting average against in that circuit and the fact
that he's fourth on the overall Minors strikeout leader board."
Homer Bailey tops the
Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America.
" ... The reports
on Bailey over his first three starts--all wins--in the Southern League have
been as impressive as his numbers there. In 17 innings, the 20-year-old
righthander has yet to allow an earned run, given up seven hits, struck out 22
and walked just four. His fastball has been in the 96-97 mph range, topping out
at 98, and his 12-to-6 curveball has been a major asset. The big news concerns
his changeup, which has developed into an average to above-average offering this
season."
" ... 9. Donald Veal ...
pitched his way out of the Midwest League with a 5-3, 2.69 first half at
Lansing, and he's been even better in three starts since a promotion to Daytona.
Veal has yet to allow an earned run in his first 18 2/3 Florida State League
innings, and he picked up his first high Class A win with seven innings of
three-hit ball Tuesday against Brevard County."
And, on the Not So Hot Sheet, Gio Gonzalez
tops the chart :
" ... If you can say anything
good about Gio's recent string of starts, it's that he hasn't lost the ability
to strike batters out. Since June 1, Gonzalez has labored mightily, posting a
6.49 ERA with 18 walks in 34 and 2/3 innings. However, the stuff is there, as
Gonzalez has struck out 40 batters. The main problem has been the longball, as
Gonzalez has allowed 10 home runs during that streak, including at least one in
his last eight starts."
A little catchup ... David
Regan, RotoAmerica, checks in with his picks as the best of the prospects
among starting pitchers. Jered Weaver LAA ranks No. 1 just ahead of
the Yankee phenom :
" ... Philip
Hughes ... May have the most upside of anyone on his list despite
having just turned 20 a few days ago. 97 Ks in 97.1 IP between High-A and
Double-A, including just two hits allowed over 13 innings in his last start.
Hopefully hes not being over-worked."
" ... 4. Mike Pelfrey
... Likely to be untouchable in Omar Minayas July trade talks, Pelfrey
could have a John Lackey-like playoff impact as a rookie for the Mets. Hes got
all stuff necessary to be a #2 starter. 2.55 ERA and 92 K in 81.1 IP between
High-A and Double-A."
" ... 10. Anibal Sanchez
... Nice first big league start. Sanchez came over from Boston in the
Lowell/Beckett deal and should be a solid #3 starter in time."

following a suspension for violating Major League Baseball's substance abuse
policy ... After allowing the 25-year-old outfielder to take Extended
Spring Training at the beginning of June, Major League Baseball permitted
Hamilton to play in the Minors for the rest of the season. Hamilton cried during
the national anthem, then received a standing ovation from the fans during his
first at-bat before his Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones,
7-2. "It was joy," he said of stepping into the batter's box. "I couldn't really
put into words how I felt at the moment. I just never thought I could get back
here." The designated hitter flew out to left field in the first inning, but hit
a leadoff double -- one of Hudson Valley's three hits -- in the fourth and
scored on Matthew Fields' single. He grounded out in the sixth and was replaced
by pinch hitter David Kennedy in the ninth." (MLB.com)

Nate Stephens, RotoWorld.com, checks out a COL catching prospect and recent
addition to the SEA outfield :
" ... Chris Iannetta ... Back at
Tulsa to start the 2006 campaign, Iannetta was showing his best production to
date. In 156 at-bats over 44 games the catcher hit .321 with a 26/24 K/BB ratio
and 23 extra-base hits, thus resulting in an impressive .622 slugging
percentage. The Rockies decided to be aggressive with the 23 year-old and
quickly promoted him to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where hes shown very similar
production over a seven-game stretch ... He wouldnt be a Top-100 prospect
if not for his favorable home ballpark, but Iannettas decent power and batting
average potential make him worth the flier. That hes shown such impressive
plate discipline throughout the minors and in college leads me to believe hell
be at least a solid regular, even if he doesnt end up hitting .300 with 15-20
homers."
" ... Shin-Soo Choo ... speed and ability to
score once on base mean hes a fine fantasy prospect. He was hitting .305 with
19 steals in 23 tries to go with a 59/38 K/BB ratio in 305 Triple-A at-bats
before being promoted to the majors this week. Jeremy Reed could miss the rest
of the season with a broken thumb, thus giving Choo the potential to earn four
or five starts a week."
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews and updates his STL pre-season prospect list :
" ... 2) Colby Rasmus, OF ...
.310/.373/.512 with 22 doubles and 11 homers for Class A Quad Cities. Also has
17 steals. . .power, speed, it's all here."
" ... 8) Bryan Anderson, C ... .307/.394/.428
for Quad Cities. Solid batting average and OBP, just 2 homers but he has a lot
of potential."
Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com, checks out some of the outfielders in the Futures
Game :
" ... Cameron Maybin
... Of the three 2005 draft picks in this outfield, Maybin has the most
upside. The No. 10 overall pick has the complete package of all five tools. And
he's also the one with the least amount of experience ... He's got an advanced
knowledge of the game for a teenager, as evidenced by his stolen base rate
(13-for-14) and his on-base skills (.388) through his first 47 games as a pro."
" ... Travis Buck ...
Taken in the supplemental first round (36th overall) by the A's in the 2005
draft, Buck has quickly jumped onto the fast track. That shouldn't surprise
anyone after the Arizona State product hit .346 in his pro debut for
short-season Vancouver and Class A Kane County. Buck can do a little bit of
everything as he's shown across two levels so far this year ... hasn't
stopped since the promotion up to Double-A. With Midland, Buck has hit .303 over
41 games, with a .384 OBP and .480 SLG. For the season, he's hit .322 with a
.922 OPS and gone 11-for-13 in stolen-base attempts."

Hats off to the Players / Pitchers of the Week :
" ... right-hander Homer Bailey went
2-0 in 11.0 shutout innings last week to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. Bailey
struck out 15 hitters over his two starts ... On June 27 at Huntsville, he
tossed six scoreless innings, walking two and striking out six to earn the win.
Bailey continued his dominance on July 2 against Jacksonville, striking out nine
and allowing two hits and two walks in five innings to improve his record to
3-0. Since his promotion to Chattanooga, the Cincinnati Reds' top prospect has
won each of his three starts, hurling 17.0 shutout innings and fanning 22
hitters while allowing just 7 hits and 4 walks in the process." (Southern
League)
" ... Jordan Tata ... After not having pitched
higher than the Class-A level before 2006, Tata found himself in the Detroit
bullpen for the first month of the 2006 season (going 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in
14.0 IP). After being optioned to Toledo, Tata joined the Mud Hens starting
rotation and won four of his first seven decisions heading into a key start June
30 ... turned in his best performance of the year, keeping the Indians off
the scoreboard for all 7.0 innings he faced them. Tata scattered five hits and
struck out a season-high 11 batters, while not walking anyone ... a 16th
round draft selection of Detroit in 2003 out of Sam Houston State."
(International League)
" ... Brandon Wood ... had a
hit, a run and an RBI in all six games this week. He also only struck out just
three times ... Last year's home run champion already has 18
longballs this season, and is again challenging for the Minor League home run
title again this season. Wood has two multi-home run games this season, and has
cracked 30 doubles. Wood, who also led the Minor Leagues in extra-base hits last
season, leads that category again this year, with 50." (Texas League)
" ... Shin-Soo Choo ... collected 18
hits in 31 at-bats for a .581 batting average on the week while posting a 1.032
slugging percentage ... put together two four-for-five and two
three-for-four appearances that headlined his stellar week that included three
home runs, three doubles, and a triple with 11 RBI and ten runs scored ... has
hit safely in 22 of his last 25 games, including 15 multiple-hit performances.
The twenty three year-old is now hitting .327 on the season with 11 homers and
39 RBI." (Pacific Coast League)
" ... New York-Penn League ... Jay Miller [PHI] ...
entered the week having collected four hits over his first 16 at-bats on the
season. He then accumulated 11 hits over his next 18 at-bats and is now hitting
a league-leading .441. The 22-year-old collected three hits on Monday, Friday
and Sunday and is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak." (MLB.com)
" ... Appalachian League ... Larry Williams [ATL] ...
went 3-for-16 over his first five games this week -- certainly nothing to write
home about. The 21-year-old must have been itching to send a letter, however,
because he collected seven hits over his next 12 at-bats, one of which was his
first professional home run." (MLB.com)
" ... Midwest League ... Thomas Mendoza
[LAA] ... On Monday ... the 18-year-old allowed one run on three hits over
eight innings while striking out nine ... On Saturday, the right-hander allowed
an unearned run on three hits and picked up the win." (MLB.com)
" ... Pioneer League ... Steven Johnson [LAD] ... 27
strikeouts lead the Pioneer League, and he accumulated 18 of them over 13
shutout innings this week. On Tuesday against Orem, the 18-year-old allowed just
one hit over six innings while striking out 10. On Sunday against Casper, he
yielded four hits over seven innings while striking out 10. Opponents are
hitting .186 against Johnson, and he has walked just two batters on the season."
(MLB.com)
Yanks get their man, 16-year-old catcher, Jesus Montero. John
Manuel, Baseball America, has some details :
" ... While his bat and power potential made
Montero a hot commodity, his future behind the plate may be in doubt, according
to scouts with other clubs. One scout said Montero was already 6-foot-3 and 230
pounds and disparagingly compared his body to that of Henry Blanco; another said
he was too stiff and lacked the athleticism to catch at the big league level.
"He has above-average raw power, a lot of power, but where do you put him?" the
scout said. "I don't think he'll catch. He's a big-hipped kid and he's going to
get bigger; he may have to end up at first base."

One more addition ... please offer a hand to Matt Nemeth who provides a
weekly look at the Alaska Baseball League. (We've just missed the 100th
Anniversary of the Midnight Sun Game "played in Fairbanks on the summer solstice
every year since 1906, is played in the middle of the night with only natural
light." (ABL)

WAS gets Ozzie defense, Miguel offense at shortstop (as the Mets' hype machine
begins early) :
" ... The Nationals agreed to terms with shortstop
Esmailyn Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic on Sunday. The switch-hitting
Gonzalez, 16, will earn a $1.4 million signing bonus and report to the Dominican
Summer League Nationals this week. Gonzalez cannot start playing professional
baseball in the United States until next year, and general manager Jim Bowden
didn't rule out Gonzalez playing above the rookie-level Gulf Coast Nationals in
2007. The Nationals compared his glove to Ozzie Smith and say he could
potentially have the bat of a Miguel Tejada. Gonzalez, whose nickname is
"Smiley," was discovered two years ago by Jose Rijo, the team's
special assistant to the general manager." (MLB.com)
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
" ... 1) Alex Gordon ...
.300/.403/.506 for Double-A Wichita, 20 doubles, 10 homers, 38 walks, 16 steals
in 17 attempts. Basically everything expected, hitting for average and power,
getting on base, playing good defense, even good speed contributions."
" ... 2) Billy Butler ... .326/.389/.500 with
22 doubles, 10 homers for Wichita, strong numbers especially given his age at
20. I think he's going to be a fine hitter."
" ... 6) Chris Lubanski ... .258/.336/.416 with
21 doubles for Wichita. Cold start, got hot in May, then went cold again. This
fits his usual pattern. I expect he will go on a hot streak in July and August
and finish with good numbers."
Jim Callis,
Baseball America, on Scott Elbert or Clayton Kershaw ?
" ... Kershaw rated as a
better prospect than Elbert did at the time of their drafts. At the same stage
of their careers, we tabbed Kershaw as the best high school prospect in the
nation and No. 6 overall, while Elbert was the fourth-best prep prospect and No.
12 overall ... Kershaw had a little more size and a little more stuff,
while Elbert was slightly more polished and slightly more athletic. Based on our
reports, Kershaw would have rated an edge over Elbert in their draft years.
Their ceilings are comparable. If could pick just one right now, I'd take Elbert
because he's proven himself at a higher level. His stuff and health have held up
in two-plus years in pro ball, and he's currently dominating in high Class A. He
has a 5-5, 2.49 record in 16 games (14 starts) at Vero Beach, with a 93-38 K-BB
ratio in 80 innings. Florida State League hitters are batting just .194 with
four homers against him."
