" ... Jeff Samardzija's professional baseball career appears headed for Peoria ... expected to pitch for the Boise Hawks Monday night and then report to the Chicago Cubs' Class A team in Peoria ...  Samardzija is expected to remain with the Peoria Chiefs until he reports back to the ND football team in late July or early August. ...  a fifth-round selection of the Cubs in June's baseball draft. The Valparaiso product has an 0-1 record with a 3.21 ERA in four starts for Boise. In 14 innings pitched, Samardzija has 15 strikeouts and four walks."  (South Bend Tribune)

" ...  The Minnesota Twins have reinforcements on the way for Rochester. RHP Matt Garza, the Twins first-round pick in the 2005 draft, was promoted from Double-A New Britain Thursday ...  currently ranks 3rd in the entire Minor Leagues in strikeouts with 121 and is a combined 11-3 between Single-A Ft. Myers and Double-A New Britain."  (International League)

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with a review of his pre-season prospect lists for the Dodgers and Rangers :

" ...  1) Eric Hurley ...  RHP, Grade B+ 5-5, 3.87 in 17 starts for Class A Bakersfield, 100/30 K/BB in 95 innings, 85 hits allowed. Doing well, quite overpowering at times, still sharpening up his command within the strike zone."

" ... 3) John Danks ...  4.23 in 17 starts between Oklahoma and Double-A Frisco, 101/32 K/BB in 89 innings. Still erratic but very promising."

" ... 2) Joel Guzman ...  .281/.341/.442 in 70 games for Vegas, 9 homers in 260 at-bats. Doing OK but I thought he was poised for a breakout, and I am starting to have doubts about how he is going to develop."

" ... 3) Andy LaRoche ...  .309/.419/.483 in 62 games for Double-A Jacksonville, .279/.367/.512 in 11 games for Vegas. Still looks good to me."

" ... 7) Blake DeWitt ...  .269/.348/.427 with 12 homers for Vero Beach, 40/63 BB/K in 342 at-bats. I like his BB/K mark, and I think he will break out in 2007."

Baseball America makes its picks as the best at each level with Howie Kendrick LAA the choice as tops in Triple-A down to Jay Bruce CIN as No. 1 in Low-A Ball :

" ...  Kendrick earned his first big league promotion in April, but hit just .115 over his first 26 at-bats, earning a ticket back to Salt Lake. He had no such trouble upon his return to the minors, as he proceeded to hit .369 for Salt Lake, raising his career mark to .361 over 1,472 minor league at-bats. Kendrick, 23, was leading all players at the Triple-A level with a .627 slugging percentage, the product of 43 extra-base hits."

" ... Low Class A is loaded this season with five outfielders drafted in the first round out of high school in 2005. While all of them are at least holding their own, none is performing as well as Dayton outfielder Jay Bruce. The 12th overall pick is not just lighting up the Midwest League leader board, but the minor league leader board as well. The 19-year-old leads the minors in doubles as well as extra-base hits."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, checks in on his pre-season CLE Top 20 with comments on his picks a half-season later :

" ...  6) Ryan Garko ...  .256/.360/.446 for Buffalo, 13 homers. He is capable of better and I think a breakthrough is possible next year."

" ... 7) Trevor Crowe ...  .328/.442/.466 with 31 steals in 64 games between Class A Lake County, Class A Kinston, and Double-A Akron. Lots of speed, gap power, high OBP. A very fine player."

" ... 11) Chuck Lofgren ... 1.95 in 16 starts for Kinston, 81/33 K/BB in 88 innings, 63 hits and just ONE homer allowed. Look for him to jump up the lists quickly this fall."

Zach Chalifour, TheRotoTimes, with some notes from the Futures Game :

" ...  Josh Fields ...  simply continues to hit, but with Joe Crede doing the same, chances remain high that Fields may make a permanent switch to an outfield position. His solid performance on the national stage could make Fields even more appealing for the White Sox to dangle as trade bait."

" ... Wladimir Balentien ...  another prospect with a ton of power but little plate discipline. He's having another strong year at Double-A San Antonio and may see some time with the Mariners next season."

" ... Joe Koshansky continues to mash As your typical prospect with a ton of power who doesn't hit for average and strikes out a lot, the 24-year-old Koshansky has had an excellent season for Double-A Tulsa to follow up on his 2005 season, in which he hit a combined 38 home runs between Tulsa and Low-A Asheville. With already 20 dingers on the year at Tulsa, Koshansky could become a major threat to opposing pitching if he ever makes it to Coors Field."

Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld.com, offers his mid-season Top 150, with some interesting movement up and down the chart :  (all the Top 100sDelmon Young, Brandon Wood, Alex Gordon 1-2-3.

" ...  6. Philip Hughes ...  baseball’s top pitching prospect right now. The 2004 first-round pick has yet to stumble while being pushed aggressively by the Yankees, establishing himself as one of the Eastern League’s best pitchers even before he turned 20 last month. Hughes throws 91-94 mph with movement and his curveball has come a long way, turning his slider into an afterthought at times. He also has a changeup that projects as a major league pitch. The total package could make him a No. 1 starter in time ...  he should have a rotation spot in New York as soon as next May or June."

" ... 20. Jason Hirsh ...  isn’t quite as much of a flamethrower as his 6-foot-8, 250-pound frame would seem to suggest, but he does work in the 91-95 mph range. His hard slider is a strikeout pitch, and while it’s not up to the standards of his other weapons, his changeup has become more than just a show-me offering this year. If the Astros have a need, they could try him in relief during the final two months. He’ll go into the rotation next year, and he could be a No. 3 starter by 2008."

" ... 27. Ian Stewart ... has still only excelled at low Single-A Asheville in 2004 and he was playing in a park very well suited for left-handed hitters. He hit .274/.353/.497 at Single-A Modesto last year and his production has slipped further this year. Also, concerns about his ability to stay at third base have increased. ...  has the potential to be a .280-.290 hitter good for 30 homers per year. His stock is down a bit, however. "

" ... 38. Hunter Pence ...  A 6-foot-5 right-handed hitter, Pence displays an impressive power stroke that has also allowed him to hit for average in the minors. He has been old for his leagues, which is a problem. He’s also not particularly athletic, something that figures to limit him to left field in the majors. There’s little chance that Pence will become a star, but he should be a rock-solid regular beginning in 2007."

" ... 64. Andrew McCutchen ...  hasn’t been able to match the numbers of Maybin and Bruce, the two high school outfielders drafted around him last year, but he has experienced modest success as an 18-year-old in full-season ball. McCutchen is a pure center fielder with leadoff potential. He could be good for 15 homers and 30 steals per year in the majors. Expect him to begin showing better on-base skills next season."

" ...  Roger Clemens Award ...  Miller won the award over right-handers Eddie Degerman of Rice, Tim Lincecum of the University of Washington and Brad Lincoln of the University of Houston ... For Miller, this last month has been a whirlwind. First of all, North Carolina played in the College World Series finals. Then, the Detroit Tigers selected Miller No. 6 overall in this season's First-Year Player Draft. Now this. "It's a huge honor to even make the finals," said Miller, who finished his junior season with a 13-2 record, a 2.11 ERA and 119 strikeouts. "I'm just happy to be here."  (MLB.com)

A new third baseman could be among the changes in Cleveland :

" ...  The Indians' next move will probably be the promotion of third baseman Andy Marte from Buffalo. Marte could join the Indians by Aug. 1, if not sooner. Aaron Boone, the Tribe's starter at third for the last two years, will be traded or assume a utility role to make room ... The Indians traded Coco Crisp to Boston in January to get Marte. They project him as their starting third baseman next year and to one day hit in the middle of the lineup. After a slow start, Marte is hitting .271 with 19 doubles, 13 homers and 40 RBI for Buffalo. Defensively, Marte has made 19 errors."  (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Wes Bankston TB moving up ... and back.

" ...  third baseman Wes Bankston got two pieces of good news Wednesday night. The big one: He's being promoted to Tampa Bay's Class AAA team in Durham, N.C. The not-so-big: He's moving back to first base. "I'm very, very pleased," said Bankston ....  "This, of course, is the goal -- to keep moving up and keep advancing my career. I'm not totally satisfied, because I'm still not to the place I want to be yet. But this is great." As for the move back to first base, Bankston admits he's kind of glad to see that. The Southern League All-Star starter made 17 of his 18 errors this season in 30 games at third base."   (Montgomery Advertiser)

Bryan Smith has the second installment of his mid-season Top 75 prospect chart.

" ...  24. Colby Rasmus ...   I've reached a summer record of most minor league games seen in person this year, and I maintain Rasmus is the sweetest swing I have encountered. His ceiling is lower than the other freakish outfielders in his class, but Rasmus does everything with ease."

" ... 28. Humberto Sanchez ...  For me, Sanchez was among the most impressive in the Futures Game, even if he showed the nation how large he really is. If Jim Leyland is serious about a 6-man rotation in the second half, Sanchez' presence in the Majors shouldn't slow Detroit down."

" ... 65. Radhammes Liz ...  His statistics are amazing, consistently, but his age is damning. Liz has the fastball to move up the ladder, but the Orioles have been stubborn about promoting him. The time is now to see if Liz has a future beyond the bullpen."

" ... 71. Jacobby Ellsbury ...  I went over his profile recently, but really, the Red Sox are getting a little less this season than what they bargained for last June. However, Ellsbury has still been great defensively and has continued to shown a lot of the skills necessary to be a future leadoff man."

Jim Callis, Baseball America, on Josh Hamilton TB :

" ...  Back and leg injuries limited Hamilton to 27 games in 2001, and shoulder and elbow woes kept him to 56 games in 2002. Then a series of drug problems led to 3½ years away from the game, including a suspension from Major League Baseball that lasted from February 2004 until July of this year. Can Hamilton get back to where he once was? It would make for a nice story, but at this point I'll believe it when I see it. He missed so much time and has so much to overcome, that the odds are just too long. Hamilton, who's now 25, has gone 1-for-5 with a double and walk in his first two games back at short-season Hudson Valley."

Long overdue, TB finally decides BJ Upton will shift over (at least temporarily) to third :

" ...  Andrew Friedman, the Devil Rays' vice president of baseball operations, announced ... Upton would remain at Triple-A Durham in the wake of the trade that sent Aubrey Huff to Houston. However, instead of playing shortstop, which is Upton's preference and primary position, the second overall pick in the 2002 draft will slide over to third, where he will spend a few weeks familiarizing himself with the position in preparation for a call-up to the Major Leagues ... "I want to be a shortstop," Upton told MLB.com Wednesday afternoon as he prepared for the Triple-A All-Star Game ... "But [Friedman] explained the whole situation to me. That's what they want me to do so that's what I have to do. It's what's best for the organization." "Of course I'm excited about this. And I don't think it will take that long for me to get used to being over there," Upton said. "It's more of a reaction position over there so it might take me a couple of days, but I don't think it will take longer than that." Friedman said there had been "lots of discussion" internally about moving Upton to third base once talks with Houston intensified. Upton will work with Jimy Williams and the staff at Durham to make the adjustment to third, but there is no clear timetable as to when he will be promoted to Tampa Bay."  (MLB.com)

" ... When the best power hitters in Triple-A baseball were finished ...  Andy Marte  ...  won the competition by hitting 29 home runs, and as shot after shot disappeared into the night sky, Tribe fans had to be saying: "Get this guy to Cleveland." ...  "I'm just trying to play hard every day, and show everyone that I can play in the big leagues," Marte said after defeating Ryan Ludwick of the Mud Hens in the final round of the home run derby. "There was a lot of good competition here, and I was just trying to be selective and get a pitch I could drive out of the ballpark." He found that pitch often. Marte, a 22-year-old third base-man who hit a career-high 24 home runs in the 2004 season, hit 10 home runs in the first round last night, then blasted 13 in the semifinals before hitting six in the championship round to defeat Ludwick."  (Toledo Blade)

Be sure to check out Bryan Smith's very interesting mid-season prospect update.  Delmon Young remains No. 1 on Bryan's Top 75 just ahead of KC's Alex Gordon "

" ...  Gordon represents the best bet for success in the minor leagues; he has no discernible flaw. He's going to hit for average, a lot of power, draw plenty of walks, play steady defense, and steal enough bases to make his fantasy owners giddy."

" ... 5. Justin Upton ...  Watching Upton in person, the top overall pick from last year exudes an aura that doesn't usually follow teenagers. The aura was first evident in Spring Training, when Upton's build and bat were enough to hold his own in big league camp. He shined on the national stage, saving what some would call his best Cactus League game for a contest against the White Sox on WGN. Now far from the big stage, Upton is struggling a bit, but in seeing him, it's obvious there is more than the numbers tell us. Upton will come around, if not at the pace I thought, and when he does, sparks will fly."

" ... 11. Jay Bruce ... The type of season that Jay Bruce is having so far is unprecedented. Bruce is hitting for power at rates that even Prince Fielder did not at such an age. And he's doing so with a decent-enough strikeout rate. On the shortlist of people that wouldn't surprise me to be atop this list in a year."

" ... 19. Jeff Clement ...  From a fantasy perspective, Jeff Clement is the Mariners best prospect. The list of power-hitting catchers at the Major League level is a short one, and a list Clement should be adding his name to by 2008. Despite his struggles coming back from injury in AAA, Clement has given the Mariners a lot of reason for optimism about their future backstop logjam. Given how quickly Clement should rise towards the top of any fantasy catcher list, keeper leaguers should have Clement ranked higher."

Nate Stephens,  RotoWorld.com, on Carlos Quentin ARZ :

" ...   Known for his exceptional plate discipline, above average power, and advanced approach, Quentin was supposed to move quickly after starting his minor league career. Indeed, the outfielder has been nothing but successful while posting an OPS higher than 920 at every level he’s played in. Not only is Quentin performing as well as could have been hoped when he was drafted, the shape of his skill set has also remained fairly constant from his Stanford days. His .312 batting average and 80 doubles in 339 career games highlight his strong, balanced swing. That he’s also hit 50 homers hints at some 25+ homer seasons in his best years ... fantastic control of the plate has also carried over to the pros as evidenced by his 171/154 K/BB ratio ...  is one of the most likely players currently in the minors to open 2007 in the majors and with a regular job. He’ll score a ton of runs thanks to impressive on-base skills across the board and the favorable home ballpark, and he should also hit 16-20 homers with a .300 batting average right away."

John Franco, SportsBlurb, with some impressions from the Futures Game :

" ...  Cameron Maybin is fast. His speed in the outfield, and his ability to get down the first base line, really stood out from the seats ...  acquitted himself well in the game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, including an infield single where his speed clearly put pressure on the defense. Maybin is still young, and probably won’t reach the majors until late 2008, but Tigers fans could be in for a treat when he makes it. "

" ... Stephen Drew is underrated. He has speed, he has power, he plays excellent defense, and he has a mature approach at the plate. He’s had some nagging injuries that have raised concerns that he shares his brother’s fragility, and his cocky attitude (to put it politely) has not endeared him to his teammates, but he is going to be a great player."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with another look and updated notes on his pre-season FLO prospect chart :

" ...  2) Anibal Sanchez ...  3.15 ERA in 15 starts for Double-A Carolina, with a 92/27 K/BB in 86 innings. Has a 6.60 ERA in his first 15 innings with the Marlins. A solid campaign thus far, developing nicely."

" ... 5) Chris Volstad ...   3.74 in 18 starts for Class A Greensboro, 73/26 K/BB in 108 innings. Good control but hasn't dominated quite as much as people expected."

" ... 13) Sean West ...  2.77 in 13 starts for Greensboro, 68/18 K/BB in 74 innings. Has outpitched more-heralded teammates Volstad and Thompson on a per-inning basis."

Some new faces atop the Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :

" ...  1. Cameron Maybin ...  19-year-old hit .529 last week to raise his season line to .314/.412/.466 with 16 stolen bases in 18 attempts. He capped the week off by going 2-for-3 in the Future's Game as the youngest player on the victorious American team."

" ... 2. Jose Arredondo ...  now just one strikeout behind Yovani Gallardo for the minor league lead. Promoted to Double-A last Wednesday, Arredondo tossed a complete game shutout in his debut. The righthander has struck out at least seven batters in all but two of his starts on the season."

" ... 3. Chris Iannetta ...  With his play this season the 23-year-old has at the very least forced his name in the discussion for top Rockies position prospect. Since getting bumped to Triple-A in late June, Iannetta has hit .405, buoyed largely by the .563/.708/1.063 he hit last week (with five extra-base hits)."

" ...  Hainley Statia  ... Angels ...  After a slow June, Statia is 18-for-32 in July with more walks then strikeouts. Is five-for-his-last-six in stolen bases too, though 9-for-20 before that."

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, reviews his pre-season charts for ATL and DET :

" ...  1) Jarrod Saltalamacchia,...  Plagued with injuries, and hitting just .197/.311/.297 on the year. The good news is that his defense is reportedly improved. But the bat is very disappointing."

" ...  3) Elvis Andrus ...  .273/.335/.364 in 75 games for Class A Rome, with 16 steals. Still rather raw, but is very young and very promising."

" ...  5) Jordan Tata ... 3.34 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Toledo, 3.86 ERA in seven games for the Tigers. A solid prospect though not in the same class as Verlander or Zumaya."

" ... 13) Jair Jurrjens ...  8-0, 2.16 in 16 starts between Lakeland and Erie, 76/17 K/BB in 96 innings. Throws strikes, has adjusted well to Double-A so far, a sleeper."

Chris Kline and John Manuel, Baseball America, with some scouts views from the stands of the Futures Games.

" ...  Tigers righthander Humberto Sanchez made it look easy in his one inning of work ...   whiffed two, and his mound presence was certainly felt by scouts in the stands. "The biggest thing that surprised me in this game was the lack of quality pitching, especially on the World side," a pro scout from an American League club said. "But Sanchez wasn't one of those guys. He has presence and he kicked it into a second gear against some pretty good hitters. He had good life on his fastball, and this is the best his slider looked in the two years I've seen him."

Carlos Gonzalez   " ... Scouts were all over Gonzalez's tools on Sunday, and he came away with the biggest buzz of any position player on either side. "Gonzalez was the guy we were all talking about," a front office executive from a National League club said. "He can hit, run, throw--the bat speed is plus and the power is in there. His running is just OK, and he'll probably slow down some more as he gets bigger, but that's OK with me. He's really quiet in his approach--there's no wasted movement there. He's got such quick hands to the ball because of that hand-eye coordination and he has that big-time natural raw power. He doesn't try to hit home runs. Home runs are a result of his approach."

A salute to the week's top Players / Pitchers :

Texas  " ...  Jose Arredondo ...  After tossing a complete-game shutout win in his Texas League debut, it was hard to deny the Pitcher of the Week award to Jose Arredondo. On July 5th against the Wranglers, he limited hitters to just five hits and two walks while striking out eight hitters. He didn't allow a hit until two outs in the fifth inning, and allowed just one extra-base hit in the game ...  hard-throwing right-hander posted a 2.30 ERA in 15 starts with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga this year. He struck out an amazing 115 batters in 90 innings, while allowing just 35 walks."  (Texas League)

Texas   " ... Mitch Maier ...  two best games came on consecutive nights. On the 7th against Arkansas, he went 3-for-5 with a home run and four runs driven in ...  On the 8th he again homered and had three hits ... selected by the Royals in the first-round of the 2003 draft, and has hit the ball well in all stops of his professional career ...  His 10 home runs this year are the most he has hit for one team as a professional, topping the eight he hit with High Desert last season."  (Texas League)

Eastern  " ... Tyler Clippard ...  made a pair of starts for the Thunder last week and was 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA. In his first appearance of the week the 21-year old limited Harrisburg to one hit and two walks while striking out 11 batters in eight shutout innings of work ...  in his second start of the week on Sunday and again struck out 11 batters, while giving up two runs on six hits and one walk in a no-decision ...  ranked second in the league in strikeouts (105) and tied for fifth in innings pitched (101.1), was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the June 2003 draft."  (Eastern League)

International  " ... Eude Brito ...  had what may have been his best two outings of the season over the past week to earn IL Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. First up was an Independence Day showdown ... Brito retired the first 14 batters he faced, finally allowing a hit to IL All-Star Andy Marte in the 5th inning. The Bisons managed two more hits and a run in the 6th, but that's all they mustered in Brito's 7.0 innings of work ...  Sunday afternoon at home against the IL North leading Rochester Red Wings ...  Brito was dominant, scattering five hits ...  9.0 inning complete game shutout. He struck out seven, walking just one."  (International League)

Pioneer   " ... Stephen Chapman ...  had four multi-hit games this week, and his .361 average ranks fifth in the Pioneer League. The 20-year-old center fielder tripled on Monday and Tuesday and has now hit four three-baggers over just 72 at-bats on the season. He also connected for his second home run on Saturday."  (MLB.com)

Northwest  " ... David Freese ...  an unstoppable force on Monday against Salem-Keiser. The 23-year-old went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, seven RBIs and two runs scored to lead Eugene to a 12-10 come-from-behind victory. Freese also homered on Wednesday, his fifth dinger over just 58 at-bats on the season."  (MLB.com)

Carolina  " ... Jo-Jo Reyes ...  It's all systems go-go for Jo-Jo. On Monday, the southpaw scattered seven hits over seven shutout innings against Potomac, earning his first win for the Pelicans in the process. On Saturday against Wilmington, Reyes allowed one run on three hits over five innings."  (MLB.com)

New York-Penn  " ...   Adam Ottavino ...  picked up his first two victories of the season this week and did not allow an unearned run over 12 1/3 innings pitched ... Ottavino, the first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, has allowed just five hits over 19 2/3 innings pitched on the season." (MLB.com)
