We wondered ... the LA Daily News has the answer :
" ... First-round draft pick Hank Conger broke the
hamate bone in his right hand this week and will have surgery that will end his
season in the Arizona summer league ... injured while swinging at a pitch.
The catcher is expected to be ready to return for the instructional league,
which begins play Sept. 15." (LA Daily News)
CLE breakout kid coudl be out for the season :
" ... outfielder Trevor Crowe, who was
having a breakout season, was placed on the disabled list because of a sprained
left ankle that could sideline him for a month or more." (The Columbus Dispatch)
In spite of some less than stellar recent outings, Eric Hurley TEX going
up :
" ... GM Jon Daniels said
Saturday that right-hander Eric Hurley would join the Double-A Frisco rotation
within a week. Hurley, 20, was one of the Rangers' two first-round picks in
2004. He is 5-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 18 starts for Class A Bakersfield this
season. Hurley pitched in the Futures Game during All-Star weekend, but he has
struggled of late. He has lost three straight decisions and has a 9.53 ERA over
his last five starts. The RoughRiders planned to use 18-year-old Omar Poveda for
a start while Thomas Diamond recovered from elbow soreness. Hurley will then
move into the rotation." (Dallas Morning News)

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews his pre-season SEA Top 20 :
" ... 6) Matt
Tuiasosopo ... .306 in 59 games for Class A Inland Empire, down to
.176 after promotion to Double-A. Was rushed and not ready to hit at San
Antonio. Still very young."
" ... 7) Shin-Soo Choo ...
.329/.396/.510 for Tacoma, with 24 steals and 13 homers. Appears blocked in
Seattle if he can't play center field."
" ... 10) Wladimir
Balentien ... .264/.353/.492 with 17 homers for San Antonio. Has
struck out 98 times in 83 games but has also drawn 41 walks."
" ... 14) Michael Wilson
... combined .324/.402/.578 between Inland Empire and San Antonio. Major
sleeper prospect, keep track of him very closely."
At BrewerFan, an updated
prospect list with Yovani Gallardo at the top :
" ... For Yo, the #1 spot on the Power 50
was about as inevitable as another one of his dominant starts... Gallardo really
doesn't have any major things he needs to work on before he gets to the bigs -
as long as he stays healthy (fingers crossed), it is probably we'll see him
towards the end of next year with the big club."
" ... 04 Braun, Ryan ...
Has picked up the pace nicely in AA after scuffling around directly after his
promotion... Still needs defensive work."
" ... 05 Inman, Will ...
Seven, count 'em, seven earned runs allowed in 56 innings pitched this year -
remarkable."

Thanks to the Kansas City Star we have some news on Jeff Bianchi who has been
out of the lineup for the Royals' team in the Arizona League :
" ... Shortstop Jeff Bianchi,
one of the clubs top prospects, could be headed for shoulder surgery as a
result of continuing problems. He is scheduled for an appointment later this
month to get a second opinion. He felt something again earlier this month when
he made a throw, farm director Shaun McGinn said. We need to get this taken
care of. Bianchi, 19, was the Royals second-round pick in 2005 and flashed
immense potential despite being limited to 40 games in the Arizona Rookie League
over two seasons. He batted .414 with 11 doubles, four triples, eight homers and
39 RBIs."
A wasted season for a former top ranking prospect as the Angels look for
alternatives at first base :
" ... They're not counting on Casey Kotchman
coming back this season ... Kotchman, who opened the season as the first
baseman, remains on the disabled list because of mononucleosis and recently
halted a rehabilitation assignment when he experienced dizziness." (LA
Times)
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with another look at his pre-season Mets'
prospect chart :
" ... 1) Lastings Milledge
... .289/.408/.481 with 11 steals in 65 games for Triple-A Norfolk,
.233/.287/.419 for the Mets in 24 games. Impressive power/speed potential but
still working on his strike zone judgment. It was much better this year in
Triple-A but major league pitchers exploited him."
" ... 5) Carlos Gomez ...
.261/.325/.390 with 20 steals for Binghamton. Good speed and tools, not much
power, poor plate discipline."
" ... 10) Phil Humber ...
Recovering from Tommy John surgery, is 2-1, 3.12 in five starts for St. Lucie.
Looks good so far, raise his grade back to B- for now and then higher if this
continues."
David Regan, RotoAmerica, checks out
the top relief prospects :
" ... 1. Juan Salas, TB
... has allowed just two runs in 49 innings pitched so far in 2006. Not bad for
a guy who just started pitching in 2004. Salas has big-time closers type stuff
and while youd like to see fewer walks (20 in the 49 IP), hes held hitters to
a .120 AVG and has racked up 71 strikeouts. He, not Chad Orvella, is the teams
future closer."
" ... 2. Pat Neshek, MIN ...
a 25 year-old picked in the fourth round back in 2002 by the Twins. Neshek is a
fire-baller with a strong strikeout rate and currently has a 1.95 ERA with a
strong 87 Ks in 60 innings. Entering the season, his K/9 rate was 10.8 and he
had a career 2.23 ERA, so 2006 is more of the same. Hes one option to take over
for Joe Nathan once Nathan becomes too expensive."
Snippets from the International League report :
" ... The PawSox bats have come alive
in their 17 games in July ... Leading the way in July ... .
Dustin Pedroia, who had 7 consecutive hits over the past weekend, at .391
(25-64) with 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored, and just 4 SO."
" ... B.J. Upton was moved to
third base this homestand ... played errorless ball in the first six games he
played at third base before committing a ninth inning error yesterday, his 29th.
Upton hadn't played at third for Durham before this homestand, but did play 12

pitched his fourth complete-game shutout of the year, two-hitting West Tenn, 7-0
... 13th-round selection in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Sonnastine
(10-6) struck out five and walked one. It marked the 23-year-old right-hander's
seventh win in a row which, according to Sonnastine, isn't a coincidence. "Seven
starts ago, my pitching coach took away my split-finger fastball, forcing me to
throw my change-up," he said. "I was having a harder time keeping the splitter
in the zone, and there was a greater differential in velocity between my
fastball and my change-up." Sonnanstine's fastball tops out at 92 mph, while his
change-up comes in around 78 to 81. His splitter was 84 or 85. "I just tried to
get ahead and throw strikes," he said. "I really hate walking people." (MiLB.com)

John Manuel, Baseball America, in the chatroom on BA's updated Top 25 :
Andrew Miller ranking, if
eligible? " ... I have my list right here, and I would have put him
probably in the 13-17 range. Hard to say, I like Miller a lot as a prospect, but
I also think Scott Elbert is the best lefty in the minors right now, and
Elbert's pitched a full pro season, he's physical, he's much stronger than
Miller (who obviously is taller) . . . tough call. I'd lean toward Miller there
but I like Elbert a lot."
Justin Upton, Cameron
Maybin, Jay Bruce? " ... Upton has more present
strength, and Maybin looks like a big leaguer right now physically. I've used
this line before but minus the 6-foot-8 part, Maybin looks like LeBron James to
me, just so broad-shouldered and physical at such a young age. I just think
Bruce isn't as physical as those guys right now (even though he's no shrimp
himself), and that's why he's considered a bit behind them. But there's no
reason he can't overtake them, and the higher up the ladder prospects the go,
the more performance matters. He has significant tools and significant talent
... He SHOULD be outperforming Maybin. I don't know what Upton's excuse is
for not performing, but everyone still says the supreme talent is in there, and
it shows itself from time to time."
Brandon Erbe BAL " ...I
do think he will earn consideration as an elite prosspect when the year is all
said and done, I'd just like to see him make it through a full year first. "
Reid Brignac " ...
should have been in the "just missed the cut." He's one of the top 3-5 prospects
in the California League ... Dude can hit."
Adam Jones " ...
it's hard to deny Jones with how he's handled the transition to CF. He's got mad
tools, controlling the K zone to maximize his hit tool will be the key. He gets
a lot of flattering comparisons (I've read Vernon Wells lately and I've read
Eric Davis). In my head he's Mike Cameron without the gold glove defense. Mike
Cameron's career numbers are .249-.340-.442. Maybe that's why I don't think of
him as an elite prospect, perhaps I should."
Delmon Young " ...
Young's makeup (character, Bondsian personality, however you want to put it)
will keep him from fulfilling his potential, because I don't think he has Bonds'
talent. I consider Stephen Drew a much safer bet to reach his ceiling,
which is .300-.380-.500 as a lefthanded hitting SS."
Dayn Perry, FOXSports,
offers a Top 10 of prospects who need to have strong second halves to maintain
high rankings :
" ... Felix Pie ...
Cubs' top hitting prospect has been a serious disappointment in 2006. Scouts
have long admired Pie's tools, and last season the numbers finally came. This
year, however, he's "hitting" .261 AVG/.321 OBP/.394 SLG at AAA-Iowa. It could
be the lingering effects from the serious ankle injury he suffered last season,
or it could be that Triple-A pitching is too much for him right now."
" ... Neil Walker ...
has taken a step back this season. In 2005, Walker had a strong showing in the
Sally League, but this season he's scuttling badly at High-A Lynchburg (a
batting line of .249 AVG/.306 OBP/.328 SLG). He got a late start to the season
because of a wrist injury, and that may be sapping his production."
" ... Delmon Young ...
one of the most gifted hitters in the minors, but he served a 50-game suspension
earlier this season for throwing his bat at an umpire. He's back playing now,
and if you looked only at Young's .328 AVG at AAA-Durham then you might think
he's doing just fine. However, his .344 OBP and .429 SLG suggest that he's not
showing much in the way of secondary skills (i.e., drawing walks and hitting for
power). This is his second crack at the International League, and Young hasn't
yet put up big numbers at the level."
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews his pre-season picks for the Astros and White Sox :
" ... 1) Ray
Liotta ... 5.45 ERA in 19 starts combined between Double-A Birmingham
and Class A Winston-Salem, 55/48 K/BB in 99 innings, 116 hits allowed. Only
positive is just 3 homers given up. Is this bad luck, a simple slippage in
skill, or a hidden injury?"
" ... 4) Lance Broadway
... 2.75 in 19 starts for Birmingham, 79/29 K/BB in 118 innings. Throwing
strikes, K/IP is mediocre but he might be able to get away with it at higher
levels."
" ... 8) Josh D. Fields ...
Breakout guy, hitting .329/.407/.558 with 14 homers, 23 doubles, 17 steals for
Charlotte. I think this is for real. Raise his grade to B+."
" ... 1) Jason Hirsh
... 2.18 in 19 starts for Triple-A Round Rock, 102/46 K/BB in 115 innings
with just four homers allowed. Nothing left to prove in the minors. An excellent
pitching prospect."
" ... 2) Troy Patton
... 3.12 in 18 starts for Class A Salem, 94/35 K/BB in 95 innings. Has
pitched better lately after a slow start. Another strong prospect."
" ... 10) Matt Albers
... Breakthrough: 10-2, 2.17 in 19 starts for Corpus Cristi, 95/47 K/BB in
116 innings, just 4 homers allowed. Command still needs some sharpening but a
fine prospect."

At Baseball America, John Manuel
updates the BA prospect chart with a revised Top 25. A touch of surprise
as Stephen Drew tops the list, ahead of Delmon Young and
Brandon Wood. Homer Bailey (at No. 10) rated as the top
pitching prospect one slot ahead of Philip Hughes.
Nate Stephens, RotoWorld.com, checks out CF in SEA and one of MIL's pitching
prospects, among others, in his weekly report :
" ... Adam Jones
... even if the
Mariners fail to bring in any outside options, Im not that confident Jones will
have much value in AL-only formats. Hell have value in the sense that all
regulars do and the long-term potential is there for keeper leagues to gamble on
him, but its important to remember that Jones is still more projection than
production. His .277/.332/.470 line with a 67/25 K/BB ratio is fantastic for a
soon-to-be 21 year-old playing half his games in one of Triple-As more
pitcher-friendly parks. However, his approach at the plate is still developing
and big league pitchers will quickly figure out that hell chase pitches out of
the strike zone too often. Jones is a better bet for 2007."
" ... Yovani Gallardo ... moved up a notch to High-A Brevard County to start the 2006 campaign, and hes
been a hot commodity ever since. Overall, he posted a 2.09 ERA and 103/23 K/BB
ratio in 77 2/3 innings of work, thus forcing the Brewers to challenge him with
advanced hitters. And so far, Gallardo has met that challenge as well. Hes
given up just two earned runs while striking out 25 in 24 2/3 innings over four
starts for Double-A Huntsville. ... walks appear to be the only aspect of
Gallardos game that could keep him back ... Even if he doesnt refine his command
enough to be an elite pitcher, he could still be a successful No. 3 starter
while walking 70 batters a season. Continued production at the higher levels of
the minors will only see Gallardo continue to soar up prospect lists, so there
probably isnt a better time to acquire him than before the flood of lists this
off-season."
Rich Lederer, TheBaseballAnalysts,
on Nick Adenhart LAA :
" ... The second-year pro throws a two-seam and a
four-seam fastball. "I throw my two-seamer about 80-90% of the time. There is no
difference in velocity between the two fastballs. I use my four-seamer when
trying to elevate on 0-2 and 1-2 counts or into left-handed batters and away
from right-handed batters." Adenhart's fastball was clocked in the
high-80s-to-low-90s, topping out at 94 on a few occasions. He is an extreme
groundball pitcher and has only given up two home runs in 170 innings in his
professional career ... also throws
an 11-to-5 curveball in the mid-70s and a circle change in the low-80s. "My
changeup tends to be a strikeout pitch. I get lots of swings and misses,
especially down-and-away to left-handed batters." ... Although Adenhart won't
turn 20 until August 24, I wouldn't be surprised if he made it to the big
leagues at some point during the 2008 season. Once he arrives, the kid with the
three "plus" pitches is apt to become part of a starting rotation that could
include Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey, Ervin Santana, and fellow 2004 draftee
Jered Weaver. The future of the Halos looks bright indeed."
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,
reviews his pre-season CIN forecast :
" ... 1) Homer Bailey
... 0.75 in four starts since being promoted to Double-A Chattanooga. On a
real roll right now. Combination of plus stuff and improved command makes him a
dominator."
" ... 3) Jay Bruce ...
.315/.383/.563 in 90 games for Dayton, with 36 doubles and 13 homers and 14
steals. Breakout campaign establishing him as one of the best outfield prospects
in the game."
" ... 8) Joey Votto ... .324/.401/.582 for Chattanooga, much better than last year. Has even stolen 15
bases. Overall numbers have revived his prospect status. Move him well up the
list."
A limit of five innings per start for Philip Hughes for the rest of the
season :
" ... For his first full season, the Yankees asked Hughes to
shelve his slider--his out pitch during his career at Foothill High in Santa
Ana, Calif.--to work on his other secondary pitches. Now he says he has as much
confidence in his curveball and changeup as he does his slider and low 90s
fastball, which reached 94-96 mph in his one-inning Futures Game stint. "In high
school, I was fastball-slider; now I can throw four pitches for strikes," he
said. "The curveball and change have really come along. I have worked a lot with
Nardi Contreras (the Yankees' roving pitching instructor) on those pitches, and
I think the benefits have been enormous for me." (Baseball

Baseball America continues to spread around the accolades. It's James
Loney LAD atop the latest
Prospect Hot Sheet :
" ... Loney has been knocking
on the top spot's door for a couple of weeks now, and he has finally gotten
there. The 22-year-old doesn't have great bat speed but clearly has learned to
adjust to the skills he has. After going 6-for-11 in a short week, Loney is now
hitting .489 in July and .391/.434/.577 on the season."
" ... 4. Hunter Pence ... manager
Dave Clark calls Pence a "true impact player," and even without tablesetter Ben
Zobrist (who was dealt to the Devil Rays last week) hitting in front of him,
Pence was still having an impact the Texas League. Pence hit .440 last week and
hit two more homers. He currently is tied for fourth in the minors in that
department with 22."
" ... 8. Stephen Marek ...The highest
paid draft-and-follow from the 2004 draft was dazzling for low Class A Cedar
Rapids before earning a promotion to the Cal League. Marek allowed five runs in
his last seven starts for the Kernels and was 10-2, 1.96 overall with 100
strikeouts and 24 walks in 119 innings."
A salute to these selected Players / Pitchers of the Week :
" ... Radhames Liz [BAL]... right-handed starting
pitcher for the Bowie .... made his Double-A debut for the Baysox on Sunday at
Binghamton and combined with Baysox relievers, Carlos Jan and Richard Stahl on a
five-hit shutout in a 4-0 win ... 23-year old gave up only
four hits and two walks, while fanning five batters in six innings of work to
earn the victory ... was 6-5 with 95 strikeouts and a 2.82 ERA in 16 starts for
the Class-A Frederick Keys this season before receiving his promotion to
Double-A Bowie." (Eastern League)
" ... Steve Hammond [MIL]
... tossed a 2-hit shutout last week to earn
Pitcher of the Week honors. In just his fourth start at the Double-A level,
Hammond stifled the Mississippi Braves on July 12 to earn his second win ... The southpaw carried a no-hitter for the first 5.1 innings. After
allowing a single with one out in the sixth, he retired the next 10 hitters
before allowing another single in the ninth ... has thrown shutout ball in three of his four starts with the Stars and
is currently enjoying a 15.2 scoreless inning stretch."
(Southern League)
" ... Pioneer League Luis Castillo [KC]
... the best hitter in the Pioneer League. The 22-year-old Venezuelan hit
.500 on the week to raise his average to a league-leading .397. Castillo
collected a season-high four RBIs on Thursday, as the Chukars routed Great
Falls, 15-4." (MLB.com)
" ... Appalachian League Ronald Ramirez [HOU]
... the best hitter in the Appalachian League. The 20-year-old Columbian
has collected 12 hits over his past five games to raise his average to a
league-leading .432. Ramirez also leads the league in doubles (10) and slugging
percentage (.676), and on Monday he collected four hits in a game for the first
time this season." (MLB.com)
" ... New York-Penn League Scott Sizemore [DET]
... ,collected hits in his each of his last four games. But even more
impressively, the 21-year-old Tiger has driven in two runs or more in each of
those games. The highlight of this streak came on Saturday, when Sizemore went
4-for-6 with a homer, double, four RBIs and three runs scored in Oneonta's 14-0
shellacking of Mahoning Valley." (MLB.com)
" ... Northwest League Jeremy
Papelbon [CHN] ... Jonathan's not the only Papelbon in the world of
professional baseball. His younger brother, Jeremy, has tossed 17 scoreless
innings to begin his professional career. The 23-year-old earned two wins for
the Hawks this week, hurling 2 2/3 shutout innings on Monday, and three more on
Friday. Papelbon struck out seven batters over this span, while allowing just
one hit. His twin brother, Josh, has yet to allow a run over 9 1/3 innings with
the New York-Penn League's Lowell Spinners." (MLB.com)
" ... South Atlantic League Will
Inman [MIL]... turned in a pair of near-identical performances this
week. The 19-year-old hurled five shutout innings on Tuesday and five more on
Sunday, running his scoreless innings streak to 21 in the process. Inman didn't
factor into the decision in Tuesday's start against Lakewood, but he did earn
the victory on Sunday against Lexington. The right-hander has allowed just seven
earned runs over 56 innings pitched this season, good for a 1.13 ERA."

Baseball America, on Sean Gallagher CHN :
" ... At first glance,
Gallagher may seem to be just continuing the success he had at low Class A
Peoria last year, going 14-5, 2.71 in his first full season after signing as a
12th-round pick out of a Florida high school in 2004. But his stuff actually has
improved across the board. While Gallagher's 2005 season was very impressive for
a 19-year-old, I wasn't completely sold on him as a prospect. The reports I had
on him said his 88-90 mph fastball and changeup were fringe-average pitches. He
showed a plus curveball at times, but at others his breaking ball was loopy. He
tailed off in the second half of the Midwest League season, and he wasn't very
projectable at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds. Yet Gallagher has found more fastball
velocity this year, regularly working at 90-93 mph. His changeup also has become
more reliable. And he does have a legitimate curveball, as the bigger and slower
version is just a get-me-over pitch he uses to keep hitters off balance. Though
he has battled his command more than usual, he's pitching well in Double-A at
age 20. I think he can become a No. 3 starter, and I wouldn't have said that a
year ago."
Once the Brewers' top pitching prospect, now on the shelf :
" ... The Brewers shut
down 2005 first-round draft pick Mark Rogers for at least three starts
after Rogers reported what Melvin called "tightness" in the front of his
throwing shoulder. "It doesn't appear to be anything serious," Melvin said. "He
doesn't throw a lot of innings, but he throws a lot of pitches." Rogers
underwent a major mechanical overhaul after the Brewers made him the fifth
overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. He finally appeared to turn a
corner this season at Class A Brevard County. But in three starts since
back-to-back seven-inning, 10-strikeout performances in mid-June, Rogers
surrendered nine earned runs on 13 hits, 16 walks and seven wild pitches in just
12 innings." (MLB.com)
Let's
Go Tribe with a mid-season review of the CLE kids :
" ... 2. ANDY MARTE
... 1042 OPS for the month of June, despite hitting into a little bad luck ...
and playing in a pitcher's league. Even beyond service time considerations, one
could argue that the Indians should let him continue to bludgeon Triple-A
pitchers clear through August, just to erase any doubt in his own mind that he's
simply above those players. It sure worked for Hafner."
" ... 3. FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ
... has reached the majors at age 23, and other than that I can just
repeat my previous report: "... his speed and prodigious defense give him a lot
of ways potentially to contribute. If he can really get a handle on his contact
hitting, he's a threat to hit 40 home runs." He may spend a little more time in
Triple-A this season, but he should be a permanent major leaguer starting next
Spring."
" ... 4. ASDRUBAL
CABRERA ... After strong showings at various levels of A-ball in
2005, Cabrera should have spent this entire season in Double-A, and even that
would amounted to a fairly brisk pace of development. Instead, the Mariners
almost sadistically sent him to Triple-A, where he's struggled but not been
entirely overmatched. It seems reasonable to assume that Cabrera could have put
up a solid 800 OPS in Double-A and probably would have matched Trevor Crowe at
Kinston ... age 20 ... Throw in more than a few bonus points for being an elite
defender at a key position."
