David Regan, RotoAmerica,  continues with an update of his Top 100.

" ...  53. Dustin Pedroia ... Only four homers this year, but you have to like the 30 doubles and especially the 27/44 K/BB ratio. Should be ready to take over for Mark Loretta next year."

" ... 56. Miguel Montero ...  Johnny Estrada might not be able to hold off this kid next year. Hitting .366 in Triple-A with power and patience. Nice combination."

" ... 58. Mark Pawelek ...  Lefty with big-time stuff. Cubs are moving him along slowly and that’s a good thing."

" ... 64. Andrew McCutchen ...  Relatively low-key debut for this 2005 first rounder, but .294/.360/.454 and 21 steals in Low-A works for me."

Bryan Smith, Baseball Analysts, begins a team-by-team look at the minor league systems :

" ...  Cleveland - Simply put, no system has had a jump in 2006 like the Indians, thanks to three equally surprising breakouts. While Andy Marte was brought in during the off season to be the future at the hot corner, Kevin Kouzmanoff has made things interesting. After nearly hitting .400 in the Eastern League, Kouzmanoff has continued to flourish since replacing Marte in the Buffalo lineup. Next spring's position battle promises to be one of the year's best. Brian Barton is the ultimate draft day faux pas story, and looking more and more like a legit prospect with each swing in AA. Finally, Chuck Lofgren went from the athletic southpaw with an intriguing upside to a polished pitching prospect worth the Indians delicate touch."

" ... Chicago - A no-doubter: Josh Fields. What looked like a stretch on draft day looked even worse last season, as Fields couldn't help drawing comparisons to Drew Henson with his long, contact-averse swing. However things clicked for Fields in the winter, and he's been one of the best hitters in the International League in 2006. Problem for Fields is that Joe Crede has been just as good in the Majors, making his .315/.389/.526 line look only moderately appealing. Most shocking, Fields has still not really sunk his teeth into a new position, as Scott Podsednik's seemingly-forthcoming exit would usually open a hole for a hitter of Fields' caliber."

Hope the MLB time doesn't result in a significant setback :

" ...  Mike Pelfrey has been placed on the disabled list in the minors with a strained right lat muscle and has been scratched from tonight's start. The 2005 first-round pick had made one start with Triple-A Norfolk since being demoted, giving up two runs and three hits in five innings."  (New York Daily News)

3B Matt Antonelli fitting in nicely in the SD system :

" ...  There was plenty for the Padres to like about Antonelli, who batted .333 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs as a junior at Wake Forest in the spring ...  Yet the statistic that probably impressed San Diego executives the most was the school record of 128 walks that Antonelli compiled during only three years at the school ...  San Diego vice president of scouting and player development Grady Fuson has brought a hitting program to the organization that targets walks, home runs, and runs scored and the correlation between those three things. In addition, on-base percentage is important as the program is designed to train hitters how to get the best pitch to hit or accept a walk if no such pitch is thrown. Antonelli fit that mold in college and has carried it over to the pros as he currently ranks second in the Northwest League with a .429 on-base percentage. "I like the way his at-bats go," Eugene manager Doug Dascenzo said. "I think he's very knowledgeable about plate discipline. He's a contact hitter with very good knowledge of the zone." ...  "I'm usually a patient hitter," Antonelli said. "I look at a lot of pitches and get a lot of walks, so that helps. I don't think it really changes much when you change levels as long as you are patient and get a good pitch to hit and take the walk when it is there."  (Eugene Register-Guard)

Royals' prospect notes in a weekly report from the Kansas City Star :

" ... 1. 3B Alex Gordon, Class AA Wichita: Batting .345 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 36 games since July 1."

" ...  3. RHP Luke Hochevar, Class A Burlington: On track to make his first start Wednesday after completing conditioning workouts in Arizona."

" ... Wichita RHP Zack Greinke is 2-0 in his last three starts while allowing two runs in 20 innings. He also has 23 strikeouts and one walk in that span. … Omaha 2B Jeff Keppinger is batting .402 in 20 games since arriving from Mets in trade for Ruben Gotay. … High Desert RHP Luis Cota recorded back-to-back “quality starts” for the first time since early June."

Evan Longoria on the fast track to TB :

" ...  Longoria, the Rays' No. 1 selection (third overall) in the June amateur draft ...  already is in his second week with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits after barely a month at Single-A Visalia. "Most people feel like Double-A is the real proving ground," said Gerry Hunsicker, Rays senior vice president of baseball operations ...  "This is as aggressive a track as I've ever had a player on. But you can't get too carried away with this promotion. I still believe that you've got to be very careful not to cheat the development process." So a September call-up when the rosters expand "would be a long shot at best." ...  Hunsicker said Longoria will bypass fall and winter leagues and probably will start 2007 in Double-A rather than with the Triple-A Durham Bulls ... Two weeks after signing a $3 million contract on draft day, Longoria debuted with Hudson Valley of the short-season New York-Penn League. In eight games (33 at-bats) he hit .424 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. "He had that special something about him that separated him from the other guys," Renegades manager Matt Quatraro said. "Besides the obvious talent, there was a maturity. And he was into every play of every game, wanted to work every day." ...  advanced to Visalia in the California League. In 28 games (110 at-bats) he hit .327 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs ... On Aug. 3, Longoria moved to Double-A."   (Tampa Tribune)

Jim Callis, Baseball America, on Cole Hamels vs Jeremy Sowers :

" ...  Hamels clearly has better stuff. His changeup is one of the best in the game and a lot better than Sowers'. Hamels also has 2-3 mph more velocity on his fastball and their breaking balls are comparable. ERAs aside, big league hitters have had a tougher time figuring out Hamels (.247 average, 11 homers, 87-32 K-BB ratio in 76 innings) than Sowers (.256, nine homers, 22-9 K-BB ratio in 53 innings). However, there's more to pitching than stuff. Sowers has uncanny command for a young lefthander, and it's a grade or two better than Hamels'. Sowers has a spotless medical record, while Hamels has missed time with injuries in each of his four pro seasons. He had shoulder, triceps and back ailments in the minors, and he spent two weeks on the big league disabled list this year with a strained shoulder. The safer pick would be Sowers. I don't think he'll be a star, but I do think he'll be a reliable, durable No. 3 starter. The higher-risk, higher-reward pick would be Hamels, who has a chance to be a frontline starter if he stays healthy. I gave Hamels a slight edge before the season, and I'd still do the same now. Call me a sucker for upside."

Drugs.   If you haven't already, time to cut ties with Jeff Allision FLO.  Another sad tale of the tenacious hold of drugs.

" ...  Allison  ... Monday ... according to a Medford Police report, he suffered a heroin overdose ...  According to the report, Allison, 21, was found lying unconscious in a T-shirt and shorts on the bathroom floor of a two-story home ...  Heroin injection was cited as the cause of Allison's condition, and the report stated that police found a bag with heroin paraphernalia on the floor of the bathroom ...  Allison was taken to Winchester Hospital and released the same day, according to friends and witnesses."  (Boston Globe)

Notes from the International League :

" ...  Infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff was held hitless in back-to-back games only once in 67 games with Double-A Akron to start the season. So far with the Herd, he doesn't even know how to be held off the bases at all. Kouzmanoff has hit in his first eight games at the Triple-A level, with a .313 (10-32) average, three doubles, four home runs and six RBI. Combined with his time in Akron, he is hitting .380 (105-276) with 19 home runs and 61 RBI."

" ... SkyChiefs pitcher Josh Banks has allowed 32 HR this season breaking the modern franchise record of 29 set by Jackson Todd in 1982."

" ... Kevin Witt now has 12 more homers than anyone else in the IL. Witt not only has a League-high 33 homers, but an IL-best 92 RBI (16 ahead of anyone), 60 extra-base hits, and a .596 slugging percentage."

" ... Outfielder Jason Dubois has homered four times in his last five games. On August 5 against Norfolk, he hit a pair of blasts including one off the batter's eye in straight away center. An RBI-machine, Dubois has driven in 28 runs in his last 19 games.     Angels' righty making a huge impression in California :

" ...   Ryan Klesko didn't know a thing about Angels top pitching prospect Nick Adenhart. What he learned Tuesday didn't dispute the 19-year-old right-hander's place among the top prospects in the game. Adenhart fanned nine batters over seven shutout innings - including a rehabbing Klesko on a biting, 12-to-6 curve  ... "He's got three quality pitches. He's definitely got big league stuff.'' Mixing a 95 mph fastball with his changeup and curve, Adenhart scattered three hits and a walk and allowed one runner to advance past first base, when Klesko doubled to start the seventh. But Adenart (5-1) retired the final three outs of the inning ...  and exited the game with a performance on par with his season-best 10-strikeout performance at Modesto on Thursday. "He's got good makeup and good command of his pitches,'' Quakes manager Bobby Mitchell said. "When he gets in trouble, he can turn it up a notch with some nasty pitches.''  (Ontario Daily Bulletin)

Dodger kid gets to enjoy MLB meal money likely for the rest of the season :

" ...  James Loney, the rookie who was leading the Pacific Coast League with a .372 average when he was recalled July 29, isn't going back to Triple-A Las Vegas anytime soon. Manager Grady Little is expected to be extremely cautious with Garciaparra, who is coming back from a sprained right knee, so Loney still will get time at first base. Meanwhile, Loney spent a large part of batting practice on Tuesday taking flyballs in the outfield, where he occasionally played during his minor-league career and where Little plans to use him some during the final two months of the s eason. "I like it out there," said Loney, a stellar defensive first baseman. "It's fun. It gives you a different angle on the game. And the idea is that I'll be able to play another position, so that should help."   (LA Daily News)

Nate Stephens, RotoWorld, on Alberto Callaspo ARZ :

" ...   The 23 year-old switch-hitter entered the season with a .310 career batting average in the minors, and he’s always been a good defender with plus speed and great control of the strike zone. Callaspo entered the season a fine prospect, but he’s raised his stock by batting an impressive .339/.406/.474 with a fantastic 23/51 K/BB ratio and seven steals in 12 tries ... Putting the ball in play so often should allow him to hit .300 at the major league level as well, although it probably won’t come with much power ...  With Orlando Hudson and Stephen Drew both playing well and under contract, Callaspo isn’t really in a better situation than he was with the Angels. A trade this off-season could only help his playing time situation, but the Diamondbacks may like him as a good utility player."

Former top prospect back on the shelf :

" ... Outfielder Josh Hamilton, returning after a four-year absence due to injury and drug problems, is expected to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee ... during a visit to Dr. James Andrews that will end his comeback season after 15 games. The Rays haven't decided whether to have Hamilton play winter ball."  (St. Petersburg Times)

Bryan Smith, Baseball Analysts, reviews his pre-season sleeper picks.  Among them :

" ...  Reid Brignac ...  is now a highly-valued middle infield prospect. While the Cal League surely boosted his numbers, Brignac has good power and will hit at the next level. Raw defensively, he might not end up at short, but he is athletic enough to improve."

" ... Adam Lind ...  Doubles in the Florida State League turn to home runs in the Eastern League. It seemed too easy a statement to hold up, but it did this season, as Lind proved he had middle-of-the-order power. His defensive profile, or lack thereof, will hold him back as a prospect, but Lind is one of the minors better pure hitters. If Carlos Lee became manageable in left field, Lind can do the same; he'll be ready by next summer."

" ... Chuck Lofgren ...  showed a lot of potential last year, and with his athletic profile and good stuff, looked ready to blossom in 2006. He's done just that with Kinston this season, as he's currently tied for the minor league wins lead. Lofgren is no future ace, but he'll be very valuable in the middle of a rotation."

David Regan, RotoAmerica, has begun a little-passed mid-season update of his Top 100. The bottom 25 the first up.

" ...  77. Travis Buck, OF, OAK – Typical A’s prospect – high average, lots of walks, average-at-best power. Still, has the potential to be a solid regular by 2008."

" ... 87. Fernando Martinez, OF, NYM – Anyone hitting .331/.385/.485 in Low-A is impressive. A 17 year-old doing it is even more impressive. Great upside, but obviously has a lot to prove at the upper levels."

" ... 88. Sean Rodriguez, SS, LAA – Could wind up with 30 HR, 45 doubles, and 20 steals. Sure it’s the CAL and it’s not likely he’ll be able to stay at shortstop with his defense and the guys ahead of him, but he’s still had a nice year and is just 21."

" ... 100. Jake McGee, LHP, TB – 140 K in 113 innings in Low-A? That’s enough for me to sneak him onto this list."

The Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America presents yet another new face atop the chart.  Adam Miller CLE takes the No. 1 slot in the latest weekly report :

" ...  You have to go back to June 26 to find the last time Miller took a loss, and while he gave up five earned runs in that outing, he hasn't allowed more than one run over his last six starts. Back that up with a pair of 11-strikeout performances the last two times he took the mound, and that equals the hottest of the hot this week. Miller's velocity has ranged anywhere from 92 to 97 mph, his hard-breaking slider is sliding again and he's using his changeup more effectively than ever before--throwing it at will in any count."

" ... 3. Chris Volstad [FLO] ... After a disastrous May in which he went 1-4, 5.94, the first high school pitcher drafted in 2005 has been spectacular, particularly since July 1. In that time, he is 4-0, 1.47 in 31 innings and has lowered his ERA to 3.28, which ranks eighth in the SAL."

" ... 7. Deolis Guerra [NYN] ..  As the season goes on, it becomes harder to believe that this guy was born in 1989. After an 11-strikeout gem Sunday night, Guerra has allowed just two earned runs over his last three starts. Since June 1, he has a 2.06 ERA in 66 innings with a 51-19 strikeout-walk ratio."

A salute to Players / Pitchers of the Week :

" ...  Lance Broadway [CHA] ...  Southern League Pitcher of the Week...   Broadway, a 6'3", 190-lb. right-hander ...  13.0 combined innings on the mound, Broadway struck out 10 while allowing just two earned runs ...  surrendered just one base on balls last week while improving his season record to 8-7 ... currently ranked third and fourth in the Southern League, respectively, in innings pitched (142.1) and ERA (2.72) ... Selected in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft."  (Birmingham Barons)

" ... J.R. House [HOU] ... posted a .556 batting average, slugged five doubles, and knocked in 11 runs en route to being tabbed as the PCL's Batter of the Week just ten days after being promoted to Triple-A ...  Hong-Chih Kuo [LAD] was selected as the PCL Pitcher of the Week after pitching ten scoreless innings and striking out ten batters in two appearances ... House has hit safely in eight of the nine games he has appeared in this season for the Express and has collected multiple hits on six occasions ...  Hong-Chih Kuo picked up a win and had two near identical performances during his award winning week."   (Pacific Coast League)

" ... Zach Segovia, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week ... The 23-year old made two starts for the R-Phils last week and was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA ...  Zach, who has a Minor League-best 15 wins this season between Class-A Clearwater and Reading, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the June 2002."  (Eastern League)

" ... Florida State League David Winfree [MIN] ...  collected 13 hits on the week, an explosion of offense that increased his average from .246 to .285. Better yet, he homered in three straight games ... After struggling through July with a .238 mark, Winfree is hitting .440 in the month of August."  (MiLB.com)

" ... Northwest League Cyle Hankerd [ARZ] ...  began the week with a sparkling .335 average, and still managed to raise it 35 points over the next six games. The 21-year-old's huge week propelled him into the top spot for the Northwest League batting title."  (MiLB.com)

" ... Appalachian League Travis Snider [TOR] ...  went yard three times on the week, and hit safely in five of the six games he played ... 18-year-old ... "  (MiLB.com)

" ... Appalachian League Jamie Richmond  [ATL] ... continues to dominate the Appalachian League, as the 20-year-old Canadian hurled 9 1/3 scoreless innings over two starts this week to lower his ERA to a microscopic 0.74 ...  Richmond is 7-0 on the season, and he leads the league in ERA and victories."  (MiLB.com)

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall,  compares Nick Adenhart LAA and Brandon Erbe BAL :

" ...  Adenhart ...   started off in the Midwest League this year, going 10-2, 1.95 in 16 starts with a 99/26 K/BB ratio in 106 innings. Promoted to the California League, he is now 4-1, 3.76 in seven starts, with a 36/13 K/BB in 41 innings. He has a good feel for pitching compared to most young power arms, and is not just a pure thrower. Erbe ... pitching for Delmarva in the Sally League, going 5-8, 3.47 in 22 starts with a 120/34 K/BB in 99 innings. He's slumped a bit as the summer has worn on, but his component ratios are excellent. Erbe also has a good feel for pitching and doesn't just throw the ball past people ...  I rate Adenhart with a slight advantage in background and performance, Erbe with an advantage in projection, and the two pitchers even in physicality. All in all, it comes out with Adenhart a bit ahead. Both of them are premium pitching prospects with very bright futures."
