Kory Casto WAS named Rookie of the Year in the Eastern League ... Adam Miller selected as the top pitcher:

" ...  Casto ...  6'1", 190 lb. slugger, who has played games at both third base and in the outfield this season, is currently ranked in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category in the league, including runs scored (77-1st), games played (128-1st), RBI (78-2nd), total bases (221-2nd), walks (74-2nd), on-base percentage (.384-3rd), homers (20-tied 3rd), OPS (.876-4th), slugging percentage (.492-6th), triples (5-tied 6th) and hits (126-7th). Casto ... named the Eastern League Player of the Month for June and was selected as an outfielder for the 2006 Eastern League All-Star Team ... Adam Lind finished second in the voting for the award and Trenton starting pitcher Philip Hughes finished third in the voting."  (Eastern League)

" ...  Adam Miller ...  6'4", 175 lb. hurler has been the ace of the Southern Division leading Akron pitching staff, compiling a record of 13-6 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP while striking out 142 batters and walking 41 in 140.2 innings of work this season. The right-hander has been dominant for the Aeros all season, giving up one earned run or less in 14 of his 24 appearances and striking out at least seven batters in a game nine different times ...  Trenton right-handed starter Philip Hughes finished second in the voting."  (Eastern League)

Felix Pie, September in Chicago ?

" ...   all signs point to the 21-year-old making his major-league debut during the next homestand. Pie has raised his average to .282 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs at Triple-A Iowa. He is tied for sixth in the Pacific Coast League with 31 doubles and tied for seventh with seven triples. Only a few weeks ago, manager Dusty Baker complained that everyone was talking about "Felix, Felix, Felix" but that Pie hadn't produced enough to merit a call-up. After working with Iowa hitting coach Von Joshua, Pie now appears ready."  (Chicago Tribune)

Tidbits from the Royals' farm via the Kansas City Star :

" ...  Wichita RHP Zack Greinke is 4-0 in his last five starts while allowing five earned runs in 34 innings; he also has 35 strikeouts and five walks in that span. …  INF Jeff Keppinger is batting .366 and has reached base in 28 of 31 games since arriving from Mets in trade for Ruben Gotay. … High Desert 1B Mike Stodolka has only two hits in his last 28 at-bats and doesn’t have a homer since July 25. High Desert RHP Luis Cota’s roller-coaster season is sliding again after allowing 13 runs in 11 1/3 innings in his last two starts."  (KC Star)

Jack Etkin, Rocky Mountain News checks out the COL system, including lefty starter Franklin Morales :

" ...  Franklin, he makes the heart flutter," Hill [manager Glenallen Hill] said. "Because when he does it right, it looks easy. When he’s smooth in his delivery and his emotions are under control and he’s out there and he’s just pitching and he’s not worried, he dominates." That’s pretty much what Morales, who is 9-9 with a 3.78 ERA, has done lately. He took a no-hitter into the ninth on Aug. 12 ...  Aug. 18 at San Jose, Morales allowed two hits and two runs in seven innings and struck out 16 ...  And Wednesday against Visalia, he yielded two runs in six innings with nine strikeouts ...  Morales pitches at 94-95 mph and can rev his fastball up to 98 mph. And his curveball and changeup are plus pitches, too, so there has always been plenty to like about this Venezuelan ... This season, Morales has learned an even more crucial lesson about his fastball, around which every pitcher’s game revolves. "I don’t think in his mind he’s trying less," Wright said. "He’s just trying to throw later and not come off the glove. Whatever it is, it’s the right thing for him." Hughes put it another way, using a reference from another sport to describe how Morales has finally realized the value of collecting his emotions on the mound. "I remember reading a story about Larry Bird shooting baskets," Hughes said, "and just one day, he had it. He realized everything he threw up there, he’d hit. But it wasn’t like that until about the 2 millionth shot. "Well, it’s taken Morales about 2 million fastballs to understand that he can get the same results, better results actually, by staying under control."

" ... Second baseman Corey Wimberly (.329-2-23) has hit in 11 of his past 12 games, 14 of his past 16 and 29 of his past 31. With 46 stolen bases, Wimberly is second in the league, 10 behind the leader, despite missing all but two games with a strained right hamstring injury from May 13 through July 7."

" ... Shane Lindsay (2-0, 3.27) has made five starts since his promotion from Tri-City and is settling in, going 2-0, 1.29 in his past three starts while allowing nine hits and six runs, two earned, in 14 innings with seven walks and 21 strikeouts."

A small step upward for a pair of COL prospects :

" ...  Casper Rockies pitcher Brandon Hynick and infielder Hector Gomez were both promoted to the Tri-City (Wash.) Dust Devils ...  Hynick was 4-3 with a 2.39 ERA, 70 strikeouts and just eight walks in 12 starts this season. He was twice named the Pioneer League pitcher of the week ...  Gomez, who split time between shortstop and third base, had a .327 batting average, the highest on the team and eighth in the league. He also led the team with 35 RBI and was second with five home runs."    (Casper Star-Tribune)

Zach Chalifour, The RotoTimes, looks at a pair of top outfield prospects in his latest report :

" ...  Hunter Pence ... enjoyed a breakout season last year in his first full season of professional baseball, hitting 31 home runs between Low-A Lexington and High-A Salem. The 2004 second-rounder moved up to Double-A Corpus Christi and has hit just as well ...   the 23-year-old has put up a fine season in which he is hitting .291 with 28 home runs, 93 RBI and 16 steals ...  In the long term, there is no doubt that Pence is expected to become a fixture in the Houston outfield. Whether that happens in 2008 or sooner is still to be determined, but he should make his debut in a part-time role at the very minimum in 2007 before being penciled in for a starting job the following spring."

" ... Jay Bruce ...  the 19-year-old struggled a bit in his professional debut at the end of last summer, but he has since made adjustments and is having a fine season at Low-A Dayton. His 16 home runs may seem a bit low, but Bruce has had no problem showing his gap power with 42 doubles and five triples, and his home run production will most certainly increase as he continues to improve his swing and generate more lift on the ball. His .295 batting average is more than respectable, and Bruce has also made use of his above-average speed by swiping 19 bases in 27 tries. His only major weakness at this point has been a high strikeout count (102 in 114 games), but that is an issue that the majority of young sluggers face and can eventually improve. Bruce is a great bet to eventually become a fixture in the Reds outfield and be a perennial 25-30 home run hitter, but it won't be until 2009, at the earliest."

The Eastern League announces its 2006 All-Stars, including :

" ...   Adam Miller [CLE] ...  compiled a record of 13-6 with 142 strikeouts and a 2.88 ERA in 24 games ... currently tied for the league lead in wins and is ranked third in strikeouts, third in ERA and seventh in WHIP (1.14). Adam, who was selected by the Indians as the 31st overall pick in the June 2003 draft ...  Eastern League Player of the month in July."

" ... Adam Lind [TOR] ...  At the time of his promotion to Triple-A Syracuse on July 25th ... Lind was threatening to become only the fifth player in the history of the Eastern League to win the Triple Crown. The 23-year old was leading the league in home runs (19), RBI (71), extra-base hits (43) and slugging percentage (.543) and was ranked second in batting average (.310) before departing New Hampshire."

" ... Kevin Kouzmanoff [CLE] ... Prior to receiving a promotion to Triple-A Buffalo in late July ...  .389 with 19 doubles, 15 homers, 55 RBI and 46 runs scored in 67 games with the Aeros. If Kevin had remained in Akron for the entire season, he had an opportunity to break the Eastern League single-season record for batting average, which was set by Joe Munson in 1925 when he hit .400 for the Harrisburg Senators."

The Sacramento Bee provides an update on Daric Barton :

" ...  Barton's comeback has been delayed again. The A's top prospect sustained a hamstring injury last week while on a rehabilitation assignment. Barton appeared in two games for the A's rookie league team in Arizona last Tuesday and Wednesday. De Francesco [River Cats manager Tony DeFrancesco] didn't know the severity of Barton's injury, but he said Barton is out indefinitely."

Tidbits from the International League report :

" ...  Ben Francisco's [CLE] solid year is starting to find its way onto the International League hitting charts. The outfielder leads the Bisons with 133 hits, which ties him with two others for the fourth most hits in the League. Francisco also leads the Bisons with 30 doubles (T-6th in IL), 75 runs scored (T-3rd in IL) and 22 stolen bases (T-13th in IL). Francisco has collected a hit in 19 of his last 22 games, averaging .308 (28-91) since July 31."

" ... closer Heath Bell [NYN] has put up some phenomenal numbers with Norfolk this year. Bell is 3-3 with a 1.36 ERA in 28 games, and the right-hander has recorded 12 saves in 12 chances. In 33.0 innings, he has allowed just 26 hits and six walks while striking out 53 (14.45 K's per nine innings), and the 28-year-old has finished all 28 games he has appeared in thus far."

" ... catcher Curtis Thigpen [TOR] drove home at least one run in each of his first three Triple-A games ... . Thigpen is the 15th player (7 position players, 8 pitchers) to make his Triple-A debut for Syracuse this season. The Blue Jays 2nd round pick in the 2004 draft hit .259 with 25 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs and 36 RBI in 87 games with the Double-A Fisher Cats this season."

" ... The Altoona Curve placed catcher Neil Walker on the disabled list with a viral infection. The 20-year-old switch-hitting catcher appeared in five games with Altoona after his call-up from Class-A Lynchburg last Tuesday and went 3-for-13 (.231) with two home runs and two RBIs. Walker ... made three starts at catcher and one start as the Curve's designated hitter, while also appearing in one game as a pinch-hitter."  (Altoona Curve)

Dayn Perry, FOXSports.com, checks out some potential impact September callups :

" ...  Red Sox  ...  center fielder Jacob Ellsbury could see some time in September. Ellsbury, the Sox's top pick in 2005 ... has shown an ability to hit for average, on-base skills, speed on the bases and exceptional defense in center. The power hasn't been up to snuff, but he still profiles as an effective leadoff hitter in the majors. He's batting .325 since being promoted to AA-Portland in mid-June, and that means you may see him in Boston next month. Considering how disappointing Coco Crisp has been this season, it may be an audition for the starting job in center."

" ... Tigers ... The guy to keep an eye on is definitely lefty Andrew Miller ... hits the high 90s with his fastball (exceptional velocity for a lefty) and also blasts the zone with a plus cutter and plus breaking stuff. Miller's new contract mandates a September call-up, and he might even see a few high-leverage innings down the stretch. His future is in the rotation, but over the final month of the season he'll work out of the Detroit bullpen. His future is highly, highly promising."

Jeff Mathis still very much in the Angels' long-term plans :

" ...  At 6-foot, 185 pounds, Mathis is quick around the plate, as several opponents have discovered when their bunts weren't pushed far enough from the plate. "He's one of the most athletic catchers I've ever seen," Harper [Salt Lake manager Brian Harper] said. While his home run numbers are way down this year (4), Mathis' batting average has remained near .300. He also leads the team in doubles and has 40 RBIs in 85 games. "The lack of home runs was something that bothered me a couple weeks back," Mathis said. "I didn't understand where the power went. My swing has changed a bit since last year. I'm hitting more line drives." Harper and hitting coach Jim Eppard weren't worried ... Harper said. "He's driving the ball, but he's just not lifting it. If he didn't have the doubles, I'd be concerned. "Scioscia has called and told me to tell Jeff that he's still in the team's plans. . . . You don't see too many 23-year-olds catching in the big leagues. He'll figure it out."  (Salt Lake Tribune)

Maybe it will be Alex Gordon who tries out a new position :

" ...   Mark Teahen has had an outstanding season, exceeding all expectations. Tonight [Wednesday], he went 4 for 4 with a HR (16), a pair of doubles, and 2 RBIs. Teahen does everything well. He's hitting for power, getting on-base, stealing bases, and playing solid defense. He's a complete player, pretty similar to what most people think Alex Gordon will become, with maybe slightly less offensive ability. Nonetheless, his improved power and plate discipline have made him into an excellent hitter. It's still uncertain whether Teahen or Gordon will change positions. But, the Royals have a great problem to have with two very good third basemen."  (The Daily Lancer)

Olympic Qualifier Exhibition ... Team USA over Team Canada 4-2 ... Brandon Wood a star :

" ... Along with clutch pitching, the U.S. defense also came through. Another Canadian scoring chance was stopped in the sixth inning by shortstop Brandon Wood, who made, by far, the best defensive play of the day. With runners on second and third and the U.S. clinging to a 3-1 lead, Frostad hit a screaming line drive that Wood snagged with a leaping catch to end the inning. "Brandon will be in the big leagues soon," U.S. manager Davey Johnson said of his shorstop. "He's a gamer and a good defensive player who also has a lot of sting in his bat." Wood, who plays in the Angels' farm system, gave Team USA its second run when he homered to left field in the third inning."   (MLB.com)

At RotoWorld, Nate Stephens checks in with his weekly prospect report.  Chris Young ARZ and Chuck Lofgren CLE are among those featured.

" ...  Chris Young ...  Assigned to Triple-A Tucson after coming over from the White Sox this winter, Young’s biggest accomplishment has been getting the strike zone under control. His current 72/50 K/BB ratio is a significant improvement over where he was the previous two seasons, and he’s also up to his old tricks with 21 homers and 15 steals in 96 games. Since he has the defensive ability to contend for Gold Glove awards, Young should break into the majors with a regular role next season ...  could be a 20-20 player right away in 2007 despite a mediocre or worse batting average."

" ... Chuck Lofgren ...  a fourth rounder out of a California high school in 2004 ... Progressing step-by-step up the minor league latter, Lofgren was assigned to High-A Kinston to begin the 2006 campaign. And like he did when moving from Rookie ball to Single-A, Lofgren again improved his walk rate and maintained a high number of strikeouts while moving up a level. This time, the left-hander has posted a 112/46 K/BB ratio in 122 1/3 innings of work. Those strikeouts have allowed Lofgren to limit the opposition to a .219 batting average while going 15-5 with a 2.35 ERA. Still just 20 years old, it’s extremely encouraging that Lofgren has continually improved from season to season while facing better hitters. If he can continue to develop the command of his fastball and curveball while improving his changeup, there’s little stopping Lofgren from becoming a No. 2 starter."

    Appalachian League post-season awards :

" ... Leading the way is Pitcher of the Year Jamie Richmond. The 20-year-old right-hander from Toronto is 7-1 with a 0.74 ERA in 60 2/3 innings. He has been charged with just five earned runs while issuing four walks in 12 games for the East Division leaders. Richmond won his first seven decisions but gave up an unearned run over six innings on Aug. 11 and was saddled with his only loss.     Outfielder Travis Snider was named Player of the Year and is the Pulaski Blue Jays' lone All-Star. He is contending for the Triple Crown with a .325 batting average, 11 homers and 41 RBIs to go with 36 runs scored."  (MLB.com)

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, on Eric Hurley TEX :

" ...   Hurley, RHP Promoted to Double-A Frisco on July 24th. In six starts, he is 3-1, 1.95, with a 31/11 K/BB in 37 innings, allowing 21 hits. Obviously the early results on this transition are quite positive. He is actually pitching better than he did for Class A Bakersfield ...  His Cal League numbers were quite good for the context, but he's been even more effective in the Texas League. His K/IP has slipped slightly, but his walk rate has remained steady and there has been no slippage in his H/IP. Even his home run rate virtually the same. I think the ERA overstates things a bit, and he's been hit-lucky ...  But what matters most to Hurley's future is his command, and the fact that his walk rate has remained steady is an excellent sign. I rated him as the best Texas pitching prospect entering the season, even ahead of Danks and Volquez, and I'm increasingly comfortable with that call. Grade A-."

Jason A. Churchill, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, checks out the Ms system :

" ...  Jeff Clement ... Despite his disappointing numbers at Triple-A Tacoma, hitting is undoubtedly a strength of Clement, 22. He remains hard at work defensively to get ready to handle the catching duties in Seattle by mid-2008. His desire and dedication to playing catcher may be enough to get him to the major leagues, and his bat will keep him there."

" ... Justin Thomas, LHP ...  possesses a low-90s fastball and a solid array of off-speed pitches that have led to his strong showing in the hitter-friendly California League this season, his first full year as a pro. His 90 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings through Aug. 20 are a good sign that hitters are struggling to make consistent hard contact against him. Thomas could begin to move fairly quickly through the system as the need for viable starting pitching in Seattle becomes more urgent."

Top Tigers' pick makes debut :

" ...   pitching prospect Andrew Miller was brilliant in his professional debut Sunday ...  Miller, a 6-foot-6 left-hander whom the Tigers grabbed with the sixth overall selection in June's draft, pitched one inning of relief, striking out the first two batters before hitting the next batter in the foot on an 0-2 pitch. He retired the fourth hitter on a first-pitch ground ball to second. "His fastball on the high end was 97 (mph), and averaged 96, his breaking ball was nice and crisp, and his cutter was at 89," said Jon Matlack , the Tigers' minor league roving pitching instructor. "In talking to the kid afterward, he was still not happy how it went, although I thought it went very well," Matlack said. "His demeanor was very comfortable, considering the circumstances. He could easily have struck out the side." Miller, 21, was the NCAA college pitcher of the year while helping North Carolina reach the finals of the College World Series. He is expected to join the Tigers when roster numbers expand Sept. 1."  (Detroit News)

He enjoyed three multi-hit games, including two 3-hit contests. ... The mid-season All-Star is currently second in the Southern League with 71 RBI and a .508 slugging percentage and is tied for second with 20 home runs and 49 extra-base hits. The 23-year-old San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic native was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a non-drafted free agent in 1999."  (Southern League)

" ...   Ezequiel Astacio [HOU] ...  earned a pair of wins and posted an earned run average of 0.69 to collect the League's Pitcher of the Week award ...  Astacio gave up one run, surrendered five hits, and struck out 14 batters in 13 innings of work. In the August 20th contest versus the Memphis Redbirds, the 6'-3" righthander threw seven scoreless innings, give up just two hits, and tallied six strikeouts. The 26-year old improved his season record to 6-and-3 and lowered his ERA mark to 4.76."  (Pacific Coast League)

" ...  South Atlantic League Brad James [HOU] ...  allowed two runs over 13 innings this week, which actually increased his ERA with the Legends to 1.20 over 82 1/3 innings pitched. The 22-year-old Texan allowed two runs over six innings against Greensboro on Tuesday and failed to factor into the decision. James picked up the win on Sunday, however, as he fired seven shutout innings against Lake County. Opponents are batting just .204 against the right-hander in the month of August." (MLB.com)

" ...  Northwest League Shane Dove [ARZ] ... turned in a pair of dominating performances this week, although he only earned a win in one of them. On Monday against Vancouver, the 22-year-old allowed one run over seven innings while striking out nine but failed to factor into the decision. Six days later, Dove surrendered a run over six frames as the Bears coasted to an 8-1 win over Everett. The left-hander is just 3-5 on the season, although his 1.89 ERA ranks second in the Northwest League."  (MLB.com)

No-hit pitchers grab prominent spots on the Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :

" ... 1. Tyler Clippard ... [NYA] Take his picture by the pool--Clippard is the next big thing, if you listen to Yankees fans. He's been rolling like a celebrity since mid-July, piling up 99 strikeouts and an 8-1, 1.77 record over his last 82 innings. Oh, and he threw a no-hitter last week."

" ... 2. Carlos Carrasco ... [PHI] Hitters come undone when facing Carrasco in August, collecting just eight hits over 89 at-bats (.090). That's just slightly worse than their season mark of .175, and he's given up only four home runs. He pulls the thread; hitters just walk away."

" ...  10. Osbek Castillo ... [ARZ]  Since leaving his island in the sun, this Cuban defector has had to sit out, go through the "unblocking" process Cuban players must go through and finally go through the draft. The 987th player picked this year, Castillo struck out 23 and gave up one hit and one walk last week in 12 innings. Seems like he's just playing and having fun."

The outfield as anchored by both Carlos Gonzalez (currently leading the league in RBIs and Slugging Percentage) and Chris Rahl (the league leader in hits, doubles and batting average). Mark Reynolds, with a robust .337 batting average and 23 home runs was the winner for the Utility Player. Gregory Smith, with a perfect 9-0 record and a 1.63 ERA, before his promotion to Double AA, was one of the our All-Star pitchers."  (California League)

TB's Reid Brignac won the shortstop spot (over LAA's Sean Rodriguez, who was named DH) and won both the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards.

Jason Collette has updated his pre-season Top 100.  A few of the notes :

" ...  Ian Stewart: Grade earned: D. I spent a lot of time defending Stewart last year as he struggled coming out of the gate only to rebound and finish relatively well last year. This year, I’ve run out of excuses ...  He just isn’t reaching his potential and the fact that Garrett Atkins is doing well only further disappoints Stewart’s fantasy owners."

" ... Homer Bailey: Grade: A. Reds fans are beside themselves as one of their pitching prospects has not only matched the hype but has stayed healthy as well. We should all hope that Bailey can break the Reds’ curse and become the next young Texan fireballer in the major leagues."

" ... Scott Elbert: Grade: A-. If he could cut down on the walks, he’d get an A+ from me. Still, he is my odds on favorite for top lefty prospect for next year’s list."

" ... Eric Hurley: Grade: A. Before the season, it was all about D-V-D. Now, they need to find a new acronym because H belongs."

CF Jacoby Ellsbury moves to the top of the BOS chart at SoxProspects.  And, Brian Meehan, The Oregonian, has a feature piece on Ellsbury :

" ...  Ellsbury, 22, who is half-Navajo and was raised a Mormon, never took a shortcut in his remarkable athletic career. His parents taught him how to work; he does so with gusto. Blend in intelligence, discipline and a large dose of athletic ability, and you see a star in the making, even in Northwest Pennsylvania, a distant baseball outpost where the wind whips off Lake Erie ... [Todd] Claus, the Sea Dogs manager, says Ellsbury's power will increase as he matures. He had four home runs in Wilmington but hasn't hit one for Portland. His only tool that might be subpar at the major league level is his arm. He is an accurate thrower but lacks a powerful arm. "But really, I don't think outfield arms have as much impact as feet," Claus said. "He's not far away. Defensively, he could go up right now and play well. And he could compete with the bat. He hasn't been overmatched once here." ...  The Oregon State coach has no doubt where his former student is headed: "Jacoby is going to be a superstar in major league baseball," Casey said. Ellsbury's quiet confidence and appetite for work will serve him well as he moves toward Boston. His story is as compelling as his speed. And he possesses maturity and an unwavering focus beyond his years. "

John Sickels, at FutureSox.com, chats about the WSox prospects :

Ryan Sweeney  " ...  He reminds me of an outfield version of Sean Burroughs: good-looking swing, good command of the zone, but just not a lot of loft to generate power. He’s young enough to develop it, and sometimes guys like that do so, but a lot of times they don’t, like Burroughs. Sweeney has been pushed VERY quickly, and I think we’ll be in a better position to answer this question next spring. My guess is that he will develop a bit more power, but not a ton….I think he’ll be a 15-homer guy."

Lance Broadway  " ... Very polished, throws strikes, keeps the ball down, will be ready for the majors next year. He doesn’t strike a lot of guys out, but he seems to get away with it. If I were running things I’d give him half-a-season of Triple-A next year, then look for him to enter the rotation in mid-July if he handles it well. I don’t see him as an ace, but more as an inning-eater type."

A KC prospect update from The Daily Lancer :

" ...  14. Brent Fisher 18/LHP: Fisher has dominated the Arizona Rookie League for a second season in a row. Why he hasn't earned a promotion is a mystery. He has an outstanding K/BB of 5.4 and hasn't allowed many hits or HRs. He's a protypical lefty with a sinking fastball and a curve and neither pitch projects to be overwhelming."

" ... 12. Mitch Maier 24/OF: Mitch Maier remains one of the best bets in the farm system to become a major-league players. He's an excellent defensive outfielder and one of the few outfielders in the organization with enough arm strength and foot speed to play rightfield. He's shown improved power this season, but will probably need to show more to become an everyday player. His defensive abilities and solid bat should make him at least a very good fourth outfielder."

" ... 6. Tyler Lumsden 23/LHP: Lumsden possesses two very good pitches, a mid-90s fastball and a slider. His command has shown improvements this season. Lumsden projects as a mid-rotation starter and could be in the Royals' rotation by 2007."

MIN seems pretty happy with its 2006 draft class :

" ...  First round pick Christopher Parmelee is showing excellent power potential while with the Twins' rookie league team in Fort Myers, Fla. Parmelee, who has played the outfield and first base, entered the weekend batting .297 with eight homers and 32 RBI. Eight homers is a very good sign. Parmelee has a chance to be the first Twins prospect to hit 10 homers there since Justin Morneau did in 2000."  (Star Tribune)

Derrick Goold, Baseball America, on Sean Rodriguez LAA :

" ...  He can really rake, but he can’t play shortstop,” said a scout with an American League organization. “That makes the question about him, ‘Can he hit enough to play third base?’ He’s got good enough hands for third base, and the arm. He’s just 5-foot-11 or 6 feet. He’s going to have to improve his footwork and his range there. His hands are so high and upright at the plate, but he makes it work. I think that’s why he runs so hot and cold. He has stretches, like the one he’s in now, where he can just flat-out rake.” Another scout said Rodriguez can play shortstop as needed, but he sees the 21-year-old as a future utility player with a good bat."
