Western Canada 1921 Game Reports

(May 04)  Playing in a steady drizzle before more than 24-hundred fans, Calgary Bronchos shaded Edmonton Eskimos 6-5 in a 12-inning thriller at Calgary.  Third baseman Carl Manda, who singled, moved to third on a sacrifice and a single by Clyde Anheier and scored on Billy Hamilton's sac fly.  Manda had three hits to lead the offense. Floyd Herman had a pair of hits for Edmonton. Lefty Charles Swaney went the distance, scattering 11 hits, for the win.  George Jones took the loss, also in a route-going performance.

Swaney (W) and Sullivan

At Winnipeg, the Maroons treated the home fans to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Saskatoon Quakers. Maroons bunched three of their four hits in the 6th inning to score a pair after the visitors had taken the lead with a run in the 5th. Harry Benton tossed a three-hitter for the win, topping Sam Beer who allowed just four hits in taking the loss.  More than 35-hundred fans attended.

Benton (W) and Nelson
Beer (L) and Grabowski

Left fielder Bob Snyder belted a pair of home runs, including a game-winning two-run blast in the 7th, as Regina Senators opened the season with a 6-4 victory over the Millers at Moose Jaw.  Third baseman "Speck" Burke added three singles for the Senators. Elmer Leifer paced the Moose Jaw attack with a double and two singles.  16-year-old Moose Jaw shortstop Mark Koening drew rave reviews for his defensive work. Lafayette Henion picked up the win in spite of allowing 14 hits.  Al Bonner took the loss.

(July 11)  The league announced the suspension of Regina pitcher Lafayette Henion.  President Robert Pearson said the action had been taken as a result of Henion's conduct in deserting the Regina team while under contract.  Unless the National Baseball commission considers reinstatement, he will be out of organized baseball for life.  The protest, by the Saskatoon club of the game played last Friday at Regina, has been upheld.  The game, won by Regina 6-5 with Henion pitching, has been credited to the Quakers.  Pearson warned a fine would be imposed if the Regina club used Henion in any further contests.

(July 23)   Catcher Joe Sullivan belted a bases-loaded homer in the bottom of the 9th inning to give Calgary a 7-5 win over Moose Jaw.  The Millers, with four runs in the top of the 9th, held a 5-2 lead with lefty Roy Bliss working on a three-hitter.  But Clyde Anheier and Billy Hamilton opened with singles and Bliss walked Ed Mensor to load the bases.  Another walk to John Mooney forced in a run.  Millers' manager Elmer Leifer called in Lane Shultis to pitch to Sullivan who promptly belted one to centre field and when the ball took a bounce away from Leifer, Sullivan had cleared the bases and secured a victory for the Bronchos who were out-hit 12 to 6.  Carl Manda led the Bronchos with a pair, one a triple.  Leifer had three hits for Moose Jaw.

In the second game, Calgary banged out 12 hits, including a homer by Hal Nelson and three hits from Carl Manda, to shade the Millers 6-5.  Bronchos scored what proved to be the winning run in the 7th inning as Billy Hamilton beat out an infield hit, advanced on a sacrifice and walk and scored on Pat Kilhullen's sac fly. George Swartz went the distance for the win, topping Harry Huser.

* Before the start of the game it was known that Winnipeg had clinched first place and the teams proceeded to treat the match as an exhibition contest, with players at unfamiliar positions and the rules bent.  It was determined not to count the game in the standings and, it appears, no records were kept.
