Game Reports ManDak League 1954     

(May 24)   The defending champion Minot Mallards kicked off the 1954 season on a positive note with a 13-3 battering of the Greys at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium in Brandon.  Mallards turned four hits and four Brandon errors into a seven-run second inning.  They added another three in the third on two hits and four bases on balls.  Yogi Giammarco paced Minot with three hits, one of them a triple, good for three runs batted in.  Frank Mascaro had three hits for the Greys.  Dean Scarborough went all the way for the win.

(May 25)   Benny Lott knocked in three runs with three hits to lead Carman to a 5-4 win over Williston.  Walt McCoy tossed a six-hitter for the win.  Dick Baxter went the distance for the Oilers.  Homebrew Weldon Ridley, just back from a pro ball trial, belted a double and scored three runs for the Cardinals.

(May 25)  Brandon Greys shaded Minot 6-5 to split their opening series with the Mallards. Dirk Gibbons spaced out nine hits to pick up the win.  Neil Lettau, who relieved starter Murray Richardson in the 5th, took the loss.  Don Stewart had two hits for the Greys.  Joe Massaro and Duke Bowman each had a pair for the Mallards.

(May 29)   Behind the four-hit pitching of Cliff Lemme the Minot Mallards won their home opener drubbing Carman 14-1 before 1,300 fans. The game was called after seven innings because of rain.  Dean Scarborough drove in three runs for the winners with a triple and two singles.  Joe Massaro also had three RBI.  Othello Renfroe contributed three singles.

Eddie Mazur, Ben Garrett and Gus Pantel handled the mound work for the Cardinals who hurt their chances by making seven errors.

(May 29)  John Chalfont's sacrifice fly drove in Ron Martin with the winning run in the 11th inning Saturday night as Williston topped Brandon 5-4 before 2,500 fans at Williston.  Lloyd Gearhart of the Oilers, who had four hits, and the Greys' Gerry MacKay belted homers.

(May 30)  Minot made it two in a row over Carman Cardinals with an 6 to 4 triumph.  Yogi Giammarco and Don Corcoran belted home runs for the Mallards.  Benny Lott drove in a pair of runs with two singles for Carman.  Sugar Cain registered the win with a seven-hitter. Bob Miller took the loss.  Cain helped at the plate with two doubles and a single.

(May 31)  Neil Lettau fashioned a three-hitter and Minot erupted for 13 hits to demolish Carman 14-0 to sweep the three-game weekend series. It was the Mallards 4th win in five games.  Joe Massaro knocked in five runs with a homer and two singles.  Dean Scarborough also homered for the Mallards.

(May 31)   The Oilers and Brandon divided a pair at Williston.  The Oilers won the opener 6-2, Greys took the 2nd game 2-1 in 11 innings.  Don Betzen fired a eight-hitter in the Oilers' win.

Brandon bunched singles by Don Stewart, Dee Moore and Ron Smith to plate the winner in the nightcap.  Lefty Michalec and Dirk Gibbons hooked up in the dandy pitching duel with both going the distance.

(June 1)  Ernie Canada stopped Carman on six hits as Minot won its 4th in a row, 5-2.  Don Corcoran and Yogi Giammarco belted homers for the Mallards and Dean Scarborough had three hits.  Walt McCoy gave up 12 hits in taking the loss.

(June 1)   Brandon Greys blew an early lead but came back with the run in the bottom of the 9th to shade Williston Oilers 3-2.  Ron Smith plated the winner after leading off with the single and moving around on an error and sacrifices by Bee McGill and Bill Cleveland.  McGill got the win in relief of starter Steve WylieHugh King was the loser.  Frank Mascaro paced the Greys offense with a triple and double.  Paul Dyke had two hits for the Oilers. Williston had the bases loaded with none out in the top of the 9th but McGill got Chuck Ferguson on an infield fly and Johnny George grounded into a double play.

(June 2)  Brandon announced the released of pitcher Rollie Merrill and acquisition of Phillip Jimenez from the Mexican League.

(June 2)   Lefty Rhodes tossed a six-hit shutout while his teammates punched out 14 hits in a 13-0 victory over Williston Oilers.  Almer McKerlie and Sam Drake each had three hits.  Jesse Douglas and Benny Lott clouted doubles, the only extra base hits.  Buddy Afremow had two hits for the Oilers.  Veteran Bill Dark took the loss, hurt by six Williston errors.

(June 3)  Brandon jumped into an 8-0 lead then held on to down Minot Mallards 8-5 at Minot.  Bill Cleveland paced the Greys with a triple, double and single while Gerry MacKay had a double and two singles.  Yogi Giammarco led the Mallards with a two-run homer, his third of the season.  Zoonie MacLean had three hits.

(June 3)   Bob Miller stopped Williston on a six-hitter as Carman downed the Oilers 6-3 at Osborne Stadium to take over sole possession of third place in the ManDak League.  Playing-manager Bert Shepard went the route for the Oilers allowing 11 hits.  The former Washington Senator lost his foot at the ankle during the Second World War but came back to pitch in the major leagues.  Almer McKerlie's double was the lone extra-base hit against Shepard.  Sam Drake knocked in three runs with a pair of singles.  Charlie Ferguson had a double and homer for Williston.

(June 4)   Dirk Gibbons gave up a run in the first inning then blanked Williston the rest of the way as Brandon notched a 4-1 victory to move to just a half-game of the league lead.  Ellis Daugherty drove in two runs with a pair of singles.  Manager Dee Moore had a double and single.  Tony Campos led the Oilers with a triple and single and score the only Williston run.  Greys took the lead in the 6th inning as Don Stewart walked, stole second and scored on Daugherty's hit.  Moore's double scored another run and an error allowed Moore to cross the plate.

(June 5)  Sam Drake scored on an error in the bottom of the 9th to give Carman a 6-5 win before 1,924 fans at Brandon.  Drake, Johnny Washington and Chick Longest each had two hits for the Cardinals.  Don Stewart, with a double and single, led the Greys.  Buddy Woods was the winner.  Steve Wylie took the loss.

(June 5)  Minot Mallards had two huge innings, a six-run third and an eight-run sixth, to clobber Williston 20-1. Yogi Giammarco had a homer and Ed Bowman two triples for the Mallards.  Sugar Cain fired a three-hitter for the win.

(June 6)   Walt McCoy pitched the shutout as Carman topped Brandon 2-0 in a game called in the 7th inning because of rain.  Centre fielder Bill Cleveland led the offense with two doubles and a single.  Bee McGill took the loss.

(June 8)   Minot at Brandon, Carman at Williston, postponed wet grounds.

(June 9)  Williston plated four runs in the opening frame and held on to down Carman Cardinals 9-7 to snap a five-game losing string.  Leon Day was the loser in his debut with Carman. Vic Michalec allowed 12 hits but went the distance for the win.

(June 10)   Carman Cardinals trounced the league-leading Minot Mallards 10-3 in a game called after six innings by rain.  Bob Miller held the Mallards to just six hits in registering the win.  Ernie Canada took the loss.

(June 10)  Brandon Greys cracked out 12 hits to dump dumped the Oilers 7-3 at Williston.  Greys came from behind with two in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead then added three in the 9th.

(June 11)   Minot Mallards punched out 12 hits to down Carman 8-2.  Ron Martin picked up the win in relief.  Buddy Woods took the loss.

(June 11)  Dirk Gibbons held Williston to six hits as Brandon whipped the Oilers 12-4.

(June 12)    Carman took advantage of six Brandon errors to down the Greys 8-2.  Weldon Ridley had three hits for the Cards and Walter McCoy hurled a seven-hitter for the win.

(June 13)    Brandon moved to within a half-game of league-leading Minot by dividing a weekend series with Carman with an incredible 15-8, 10-inning, victory on Sunday.  After blowing an early 5-1 lead, the Greys erupted for ten runs in the top of the 10th, then held off a Carman rally in the bottom of the frame.  Gerry MacKay pounded a grand slam homer, double and single for Brandon while Don Stewart belted a pair of two-run homers and a double. Weldon Ridley had three hits for Carman, including a three-run homer in the 10th.  Steve Wylie was the winner in relief.

Tony Campos had a triple, double and single to lead Williston as the Oilers upset Minot 5-4. Jack Healy singled in the 8th to drive in Buddy Afremow with the winning run in the 8th.  Dick Baxter held the Mallards to eight hits to register the win.

(June 14)  Joe Massaro belted a pair of home runs to pace Minot to a 13-7 win over the Oilers before 2,500 fans at Williston. Yogi Giammarco and Connie Juelke added solo shots.  Lloyd Gearhart and Paul Dyke had homers for the losers.

(June 14)  Chick Longest lined a two-out, bases-loaded, single in the 9th to give Carman a 5-4 win over Brandon.  The Greys, trailing 4-1, had knotted the count in the top of the 9th on three unearned runs.  Two of the runs scored on Bill Cleveland's double. For the Cards, Johnny Washington drove in three runs while Sam Drake had two hits, scored twice and stole two bases.

(June 15)   Dirk Gibbons fired a three-hitter to lead Brandon to a 4-1 victory over Williston.  Gibbons gave up two hits and the only Oilers' run in the first inning then blanked the visitors the rest of the way.  At one point he retired 15 in a row in gaining his 5th win of the season.

(June 17)   In his debut for Williston, Dan Patton scattered eight hits as the Oilers rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to down Carman Cardinals 7-4 at Osborne Stadium in Winnipeg.  The loss dropped the Cards a full game behind second place Brandon and two behind the league-leading Mallards.  Oilers broke loose in the 8th inning for three runs off Buddy WoodsPaul Dyke's two-run double was the key blow. Williston added an insurance run in the 9th.  Norm Robinson blasted a homer for the cards in the bottom of the 9th.  Don Healy, Tony Campos and Dyke each had two hits for the winners.

(June 17)  Brandon announced the release of outfielder Bill Cleveland.

(June 18)   Minot Mallards pushed across six runs in the last two frames to erase a 6-1 deficit and notch a 7-6 win over the Greys at Brandon.  Minot erupted for five in the 8th to tie and pushed across the winner in the 9th on a triple by Yogi Giammarco and Duke Bowman's sacrifice fly.  Back-to-back doubles in the first by Zoonie MacLean and Dean Scarborough had given Minot the early lead.  Brandon roared back with four runs in their half of the inning combining three hits, a walk and an error.

(June 19)   Walt McCoy fired a seven-hitter and belted a homer to lead Carman to a 9-3 win over Williston Oilers.  Lester Lockett also homered for the Cardinals while Johnny Chalfant replied for the Oilers.

(June 20)   Harry Taylor held Carman to eight hits as Williston registered a 6-2 win over the Cardinals.  Playing-manager Lloyd Gearhart and Ron Martin each had a double and two singles for the winners.  Jesse Douglas and Weldon Ridley each had two hits for Carman.  It was a costly weekend for the Cards as second baseman Benny Lott came away with a leg injury while sliding home and third baseman Chick Longest lost two teeth when hit with a bad-hop grounder.

(June 20)  Rollie Merrill, returning from a two week break because of arm woes, pitched Brandon Greys to a 5-3 win over Minot. The win moved the Greys to just one game back of the league-leading Mallards.  Gerry MacKay and Ellis Daugherty each had two hits for Brandon.  Yogi Giammarco belted a homer, his 6th, and double for Minot.

(June 21)  Neil Lettau tossed a five-hitter as Minot swamped Carman 11-0. Don Corcoran drove in four runs with a homer and single. Othello Renfroe had a homer and triple.  Lettau fanned six and walked just one in evening his record at two wins and two loses.

(June 21)   Brandon topped Williston 9-6.  Gerry MacKay and Frank Mascaro led the Greys' offense with homers. Vic Michalec and Tony Campos poked homers for the Oilers.  Dirk Gibbons picked up the win.

(June 22)  Brandon Greys stayed within a game of first place Minot taking a 4-3 decision from Williston Oilers.  Dan Ahtipis checked the Oilers on four hits for the win.  Lou Louden led the attack with three singles.  Ahtipis won his own game with a two-run single in the 4th inning.

(June 22)   Minot Mallards rapped 17 hits to whip the injury-riddled Carman Cardinals 13-2 in a game at Osborne Stadium.  Sugar Cain held the Cards to three hits to pick up his 4th win.  Both Carman runs were unearned.  Connie Juelke led the offense with a three-run homer, double and single.  Duke Bowman had three singles.  Cain helped out with a double and single.

(June 23)    Carman's Buddy Woods scattered six hits to blank Minot Mallards 6-0.  Lester Lockett led the attack with a double and single.  Sam Drake and Woods each had a pair of singles.  Connie Juelke had two hits for Minot.

(June 23)    Williston Oilers received a brilliant relief effort by Vic Michalec in scoring a 7-5 win over the Greys at Brandon.  Michalec shutout the Greys on two hits over the last three innings.  Lloyd Gearhart highlighted the Oilers 11-hit attack with a triple, double and single.  Buddy Afremow also had three hits while Bill Cleveland added a triple and single.  Frank Mascaro clubbed three hits in four trips for Brandon.  Bill Spaeter and Don Stewart each slammed a triple and single.

(June 24)   Minot Mallards tightened their hold on the top spot in the ManDak standings, downing Williston 10-8 .

(June 24)   Brandon and Carman split a twin bill, Cardinals taking the first game 7-4 and Greys the nightcap 5-3. A pair of teenaged right-handers combined to beat the Cardinals in the opener.  Kent Geisler and Mort Wright shared mound duties with Wright gaining the win.  Brandon broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the 7th.  Ron Smith's two-run double was the key hit.  Lefty Harry Rhodes went the distance for Carman allowing nine hits. 

Walt McCoy fired a three-hitter for Carman to win the second contest.  All three runs against him were unearned.  Jesse Douglas drove in thee runs with a double and a single.  Sam Drake, Chick Longest, Lester Lockett and Walt Thomas each had two hits.  Ralph Rose went the distance in a losing cause for Brandon.

(June 25)   Carman Cardinals got a break from the weatherman as a cloudburst in the 4th inning wiped out what appeared to be the beginning of a Brandon rout over the Cards.  The game has been rescheduled for Monday.  The Greys had two newcomers in the lineup, the White twins, Bob and Bill.  Bob is a third baseman and Bill and outfielder.  At six-foot-six, both tower over most of their teammates. 

(June 26)   Before 2,000 fans at Osborne Stadium, Brandon Greys squeezed out a 7-5 victory over Carman Cardinals.  Ron Stewart wielded the big bat for the Greys blasting a two-run homer and three singles.  Bill Spaeter and Bill White each had a double and single.  Johnny Washington had two doubles and a single for Carman.  Losing pitcher Bob Miller belted a three-run triple for the Cardinals.

(June 26)  A five-run 4th inning carried Minot to a 7-2 win over Williston.  Neil Lettau fired a six-hitter to registered the win.

(June 27)   Carman managed a split of its weekend series with Brandon taking a 10-9 verdict in Sunday's action.

(June 27)   Sugar Cain fired a two-hitter to win his 5th straight decision as Minot Mallards swept a weekend series with Williston with a 6-1 victory.

(June 28)   Brandon Greys upended Carman 7-3 but not without a major rhubarb in the 9th inning.  Brandon erupted for four runs in the opening frame to notch enough for the win.  Greys, who had nine hits on the day, punched out five consecutive safeties in their first at bat.  Don Stewart's two-run homer was the highlight.  Ralph Rose gave up 12 hits in going the distance for the win.

In the bottom of the 9th, Cardinals filled the bases with none out on a pair of singles and an error. On a 2-2 pitch Chick Longest tipped the ball which appeared to strike beside the plate on the foul side of the third base line.  Brandon catcher Lou Louden grabbed the ball on the bounce, in fair territory, tagged home for the force and put the glove on Longest for a double play.  Longest and Cards' manager Ed Albosta confronted umpire Jack Carrigan, to no avail.  Greys escaped the jam and walked off with a win.

(June 29)   Harry Taylor, one-time major leaguer, pitched Williston Oilers to an 11-4 victory over Minot Mallards.  Taylor scattered eight hits to claim the win.  Another two former major leaguers provided a power show as Roy Weatherly belted a two-run homer in the 4th and Lloyd Gearhart clouted a solo shot in the 8th.  Johnny Chalfant of the Oilers had a three-run blast.

(June 30)   The hometown Minot Mallards whipped Brandon Greys 13-5 to take a three-game lead over the Greys.  Dean Scarborough clouted a double and three singles to pace the winners while Othello Renfroe chipped in with a triple and single and Connie Juelke added a homer and single.

(July 1)   Carman Cardinals rode Chick Longest's big bat and Walter McCoy's superb hurling to twin wins over Williston, 6-5 and 4-0.  Williston had taken a quick 4-0 lead in the first game with four runs in the first frame, three coming on a homer by Roy Weatherly. Playing manager Ed Albosta replaced started Buddy Woods and held the Oilers to one run the rest of the way. Longest knocked in the tying and winning runs in the opener with a 7th inning homer.  In the night game, he slammed a three-run homer to provide all the runs the Cardinals would need.  Lester Lockett also belted a four-bagger to account for the final run. McCoy fired a four-hitter to win his 6th game, against just one defeat.

(July 1)   Brandon and Minot divided a doubleheader, 11-6 for the Mallards and 2-1 for the Greys. Outfielder Connie Juelke provided the offense for the Mallards in the opener belting a homer, two triples and a single, scoring four times and  driving in four more. Neil Lettau, lefty ace of the Minot staff, spaced out 11 hits to gain the win.  Zoonie McLean helped out with three singles. In the night game, bid Dan Ahtipis outpitched Dean Scarborough as the Greys prevailed 2-1.  Ahtipis allowed just five hits and an unearned run.  Mallards scored in the first inning when Ed Bowman reached on a two-base error and scored on a pair of ground outs.  Greys tied in the 3rd as Bill Spaeter tripled and Don Stewart brought him home with a sacrifice fly.  Ralph Rose knocked in Ellis Daugherty with the winner in the 8th. Daugherty and Lou Louden had walked with two out and Rose lined a single.

(June 3)   Frank Mascaro drilled a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning to plate the winning run as Brandon topped Minot 4-3.  Trailing 3-2, Greys rapped three straight singles to load the bases.  A walk forced in the tying run setting the stage for Mascaro's heroics.  Ralph Rose registered the win.  Fred Parker took the loss.

(July 4)    Brandon Greys announced some changes.  Ian Lowe, the former manager of the Greys, is rejoining the team.  At the end of the 1951 season, Lowe decided to devote his time to coaching minor league baseball in his home community of Bradwardine, Manitoba.  The popular third baseman is expected to play for the Greys on Wednesday against Williston.  Sunday night, the Brandon general manager, Curly Haas announced the release of his six-foot-eight twins, Bob and Bill White.

(July 4)   Minot Mallards had 10 hits and took advantage of eight Brandon errors to clobber the Greys 15-2.  Sugar Cain pitched a seven-hitter for the win and helped out at the plate with three hits, one of them a two-run homer.  Othello Renfroe also had a four-bagger.  Frank Mascaro had three hits for Brandon.

(July 4)   Carman Cardinals pounded out 18 hits off three pitchers to trounce Williston Oilers 15-6. Ed Albosta, who came on in relief in the 3rd inning, got the win.

(July 5)   Carman Cardinals split a doubleheader with Williston.  Cards took the opener 6-4, Oilers won the nightcap 8-3. (July 5)  At Minot, Warren Martin and Bill Washburn pitched the Mallards to the sweep, 12-3 and 8-5. There were three homers in the first game, by the Greys' Ellis Daugherty and Don Stewart and the Mallards' Yogi GiammarcoDuke Bowman led the offense in the second game driving in four runs with a double and a single.

(July 7)   Minot Mallards increased its league-leading margin to six games in downing the Cardinals 9-4 at Carman.  Yogi Giammarco, who had four hits, drove in six runs, four with a grand slam homer in the 3rd.  Don Corcoran added a two-run blast in the 4th.  Neil Lettau went the route for the win.

(July 7)   Williston rallied for five runs in the 9th inning to give the Oilers a 6-4 win over Brandon. Trailing 4-1 going into the final frame, Williston made good use of three singles and four Brandon errors.  Playing manager Lloyd Gearhart led the attack with a triple and single.  Leon Day had a triple and single for the Greys.  Harry Taylor allowed just six hits in gaining the win. Ralph Rose took the loss.

(July 8)    At Osborne Stadium in Winnipeg, Carman Cardinals whipped Williston Oilers 18-12 in a game which featured a grand slam homer, a triple and 12 doubles.  The winning pitcher, Harry Rhodes, gave up 10 hits, 10 walks and 12 runs over six and two-thirds innings.  The Cardinals opened up a 15-3 lead after four innings and coasted to the win.  Benny Lott, who lasted just four innings, because of an ankle injury running the bases, led the offense with a grand slam homer, double and single, good for six RBI.  Sammy Drake, John Washington and Jesse Douglas each had a pair of doubles.  Douglas also had a triple and four runs batted in.  For the Oilers, Bill Cleveland had a pair of two-baggers, Tony Campos had a double and single and Roy Weatherly singled three times.

(July 8)    Fred Parker notched his first win of the season Thursday pitching shutout ball for seven innings as Minot clipped Brandon 2-0.  The tall right-hander allowed just three hits before running into trouble in the 8th inning as the Greys loaded the bases on a double and two walks.  Warren Martin came in to get out of the jam.  Minot scored in the 3rd inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Joe Massaro who also drove in the final run in the 8th inning with a single after Duke Bowman had reached with a double.  Dirk Gibbons went the route for Brandon.

(July 9)   Carman outscored Williston 10-8 overcoming a four-hit night by Roy Weatherly who had three doubles and also drove in three.  Cardinals, trailing 8-4, drew even in the 7th inning.  Benny Lott, who had reached on an error, scored as Johnny Washington clubbed a triple.  After a walk to Chick Longest, Lester Lockett's single plated another run and singles to Bob Johnson and Walter Thomas added two more.  In the 8th, the Cardinals used a walk to Lott and singles by Jesse Douglas and Longest to take the victory.

(July 9)   Brandon broke a five-game losing streak edging Minot Mallards 2-1 at Brandon.  Six-foot-seven inch Dan Ahtipis scattered ten wins in hurling the Greys to the win.  Rollie Merrill started for the Mallards against his former teammates but gave way in the 7th to Billy Washburn, who took the loss. Mallards scored in the 4th inning as Othello Renfroe drove in Connie Juelke.  The Greys knotted the score in the 7th as Ahtipis reached on an error and scored on a single and infield out.  The winner crossed the plate in the 8th inning on a single by Frank Mascaro, a sacrifice and Leon Day's single.

(July 10)   Before 2,500 fans at Brandon, Carman Cardinals shaded the Greys 8-7. Chick Longest paced the Cards' 16-hit attack with a two-run homer, double and single.  Ellis Daugherty added a two-run homer of his own.  Buddy Woods, Bob Johnson, Jesse Douglas, Sam Drake and Ben Lott each had two hits.  Bill Spaeter had a double and two singles for the Greys while Don Smith had a double and Don Stewart added a pair of singles.

(July 10)  Sugar Cain registered his 7th straight win of the season holding Williston to five hits as Minot topped the Oilers 3-2.  Cain had 11 strike outs.  The winning marker scored in the bottom of the 9th on an error after Williston had tied the game in their half of the inning.

(July 11)  Outfielder Don Stewart clouted three home runs, on his birthday, to lead Brandon Greys to a 16-10 win over Carman. Bill Spaeter and Ellis Daugherty also homered for the winners while Lester Lockett, Johnny Washington and Jesse Douglas belted four-baggers for the Cardinals.  Dick Myers, making his first appearance with Brandon, picked up the win.

(July 11)   Williston erupted for six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to edge the Mallards 8-7.  Lloyd Gearhart's three-run homer, his second of the game, was the key hit.

(July 12)   Lefty Neil Lettau had an outstanding outing, a three-hitter for his 5th straight win, to lead Minot Mallards to a 2-1 victory over the Oilers at Williston.  Lettau had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning.  The Mallards two runs came in the 8th inning on three walks, a stolen base, a single by Othello Renfroe and a ground out.  Williston scored on a homer by Buddy AfremowDick Baxter allowed just seven hits in a losing cause.

(July 12)    Carman Cardinals blasted three Brandon hurlers for 15 hits in taking a 15-4 victory.  Sam Drake, who shone defensively at third, led the attack with a triple and three singles.  Chick Longest added a double and two singles.  Greys third sacker Frank Mascaro drove in all four Brandon runs, three with a homer over the left field wall in the 5th inning.  Harry Rhodes went the distance for the win.  Starter Mort Wright took the loss.

(July 13)   Dan Ahtipis had another superb effort in leading Brandon to a 5-1 triumph over Carman.  Ahtipis allowed just six hits and fanned 11 as the Greys moved to within a game of second place.  Greys broke loose for three in the 6th, receiving a little help from the lights.  Gerry MacKay and Ellis Daugherty both were credited with triples after right fielder Norm Robinson lost both fly balls in the bright lights.  Brandon combined the triples with Don Stewart's single, a walk and a wild pitch to plate the three markers.  They added another two in the 7th on two errors and Lou Louden's triple.  Louden also had a single. (July 13)   The cellar-dwelling Williston Oilers upset the league-leading Minot Mallards 6-4 as Roy Weatherly led the way with a three-run homer.  Joe Massaro had the other four-bagger.  Dick Schoonover went the distance for the winner.  Fred Parker took the loss.

(July 14)   Brandon Greys moved back into a virtual tie for second place with Carman by dumping Williston Oilers 4-3 while the Cards were dropping a 3-0 decision to Minot.  Dirk Gibbons went the distance for Brandon and excelled until the 9th when the Oilers scored a pair and had the tying run at third. Vic Michalec handled the mound work for Williston. Brandon scored all their runs in the 7th inning on a triple by Don Stewart, Gibbons' double, a wild pitch and two walks. Oilers scored one in the 8th on a triple by Michalec and a single by Ron MartinRoy Weatherly accounted for one of the 9th inning markers with a homer.

(July 14)   Bill Washburn fired a seven-hitter as Minot blanked Carman 3-0.  Duke Bowman led the way with two doubles and a single and Connie Juelke added a double and triple.

(July 15)   Minot Mallards, trailing 5-2 in the 9th inning,  exploded for 12 runs to crush Carman 14-5 before 1,200 fans at Osborne Stadium.  Othello Renfroe topped the Minot batsmen with four hits, Connie Juelke and Fred Parker each had three.  Sammy Drake led the Cardinals with four hits and Benny Lott added three.

(July 15)   Harry Taylor, the former major leaguer, fired a four-hitter for Williston as the Oilers trounced Brandon 7-1. Tony Campos paced the Williston offense with a triple and single and two runs batted in.  Dennis Healy connected for a double and single. Williston lost catcher John Chalfant when he suffered torn cartilage in the 3rd inning when he fell rounding first.  He had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.

(July 16)   Minot Mallards scored six times in the first inning and coasted to a 10-0 win over the Greys at Brandon.  Marion "Sugar" Cain blanked the Greys on nine hits.  He whiffed 12 to chalk up his 8th straight win.  Catcher Joe Massaro paced the winners' 17-hit attack, driving in five runs with a homer, double and single.  Eddie Bowman had a big night with a triple and three singles.  Connie Juelke added a triple and two singles.  For Brandon, Frank Mascaro bashed a triple and single.

(July 18)   In a game which featured six homers, Brandon out-slugged Williston 16-13 to gain sole possession of second place in the ManDak standings.  The game produced 32 hits, 17 by the Greys.  Frank Mascaro, Gerry MacKay and manager Dee Moore had the circuit blows for the winners with Tony Campos, Lloyd Gearhart and Ron Bowen replying for the Oilers.  Ralph Rose, in relief, picked up the win.

(July 18)   Minot Mallards clobbered Carman Cardinals 18-7 at Minot using a 21-hit attack. Duke Bowman and Dean Scarborough each drove in five runs for the Mallards.  Benny Lott had the big bat for Carman with a home run and two singles.  Neil Lettau went the distance for the win.

(July 19)   Warren Martin blanked Carman on a two-hitter as Minot sent Carman to a 4-0 defeat.  It was the Mallards seventh shutout of the season, the fourth against the Cardinals.  Buddy Woods allowed just five hits in taking the loss.

(July 19)   At Williston, the Oilers came from behind to down Brandon 15-12 in 10 innings.  The Greys blew a 12-4 lead after three innings in going down to the defeat.  Roy Weatherly led the offensive outburst with five hits, including a homer.  Catcher Dick Baxter also had five safeties.  Lloyd Gearhart had the game's other four-bagger.

Curly Haas, the Greys' general manager announced that several of the team's home games would be moved because of lack of support in Brandon. At least two games have been rescheduled for Williston and arrangements are underway to move others to Osborne Stadium in Winnipeg.

(July 21)    Frank Mascaro drove in four runs with a four for five night to lead Brandon to a 9-8 win over the Cardinals at Carman.  Ellis Daugherty contributed three hits and Don Stewart had a triple and single.  Jesse Douglas had three hits for the Cards and Benny Lott belted the game's only homer.  19-year-old Mort Wright went the route for Brandon to take the win.

(July 22)   Don Stewart, with a triple earlier, drove a long fly to centre to score Bill Spaeter in the bottom of the 9th inning to five Brandon a 5-4 win over Carman.  It was the Greys third straight victory.  Buddy Owens bashed a pair of triples for Brandon while Benny Lott led Carman with three singles.  Ralph Rose went the route for the win, his 4th of the season.

(July 22)   Homer runs by Ron Bowen and Bill Cleveland led the tail-end Williston Oilers to an 18-5 win over Minot.  Harry Taylor went all the way for the win, his 6th.  Fred Parker suffered his 6th defeat.

(July 23)   Brandon Greys chalked up their 4th straight win, 9-4 over Carman.  It was the Cardinals' 9th straight defeat.  Dirk Gibbons went the distance for the winners.  Ellis Daugherty had a homer and single to pace the Greys.  Johnny Washington clouted a triple and two singles for Carman.  Benny Lott added a pair of doubles.

(July 24)   Williston Oilers rapped out 17 hits off four Carman hurlers to hand the Cardinals their 10th straight defeat, 18-6.  Oilers broke up what had been a tight ball game with seven runs in the 6th inning and five more in the 7th.  Roy Weatherly belted his 7th homer of the season and added two other hits to pace the attack.  Ron Martin, Ron Bowen and Johnny Chalfant each had three hits.  Lefty Vic Michalec went the route for the win.

More than 2,800 fans flocked to the park for the contest which was preceded by the home plate marriage of centre fielder Bill Cleveland of the Oilers and Miss Marney Burk of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.  Shortstop Buddy Afremow was the best man.

(July 24)   Minot dumped Brandon Greys 11-3 as Neil Lettau tossed an eight-hitter for the win.  Joe Massaro led the Mallards with a homer, double and single.  Playing manager Zoonie McLean ripped a double and three singles.   Connie Juelke added a homer.  In spite of the offense outburst the game was completed in an hour and 49 minutes with the help of five double plays, three by Minot.

(July 25)  Carman outhit Williston 13 to 9 but the Oilers notched another lopsided victory over the Cardinals, 12-4.  Roy Weatherly blasted his second homer of the weekend to led the offense.  Dick Schoonover went the route for the win, his 4th of the season.  Chick Longest of the Cards was the only batter to collect three safeties.

(July 25)   Minot Mallards, blanked for six innings, exploded for eleven runs in the 7th inning to whip Brandon 11-5. Joe Massaro and Othello Renfroe each had four hits for the Mallards.  Losing pitcher Dan Ahtipis and Gerry MacKay each had three for the Greys.  Warren Martin allowed 14 hits but hung in for the win.

(July 27)  Carman again out hit the opposition but still went down to defeat, the Cardinals 12th successive setback, 8-6 to Brandon before 1,100 fans at Osborne Stadium.  Carmen had 16 safeties to just 8 for the Greys. Home runs by Buddy Owens and Frank Mascaro proved to be the difference.

(July 27)   Minot's Bill Washburn settled down after some early wildness and held Williston to two hits as the league-leading Mallards topped the Oilers 2-1. Washburn struck out eight and walked seven, but none after the 3rd inning.  Oilers drew first blood with a run in the first on four walks.  Mallards tied in the 5th on singles by Zoonie McLean and Washburn and an infield error.  Don Corcoran won it in the 7th with an inside-the-park homer.

(July 28)   Marion "Sugar" Cain was the star on the mound and at the plate as Minot Mallards ripped Williston 10-3 at Minot.  Cain fired a seven-hitter for the win, his 10th consecutive triumph and he helped his cause driving in five runs with a homer and two singles.  Mallards put it away early with six runs in the opening frame on three hits, five walks and an error.  Dean Scarborough had a triple and single for the winners. Roy Weatherly contributed a double and single for the Oilers.

(July 29)  Minot downed Brandon 9-5 to move 11 games ahead of the Greys atop the ManDak standings.  Lefty Neil Lettau, with his 8th straight win, paced the Mallards to their 6th win in a row.  Don Corcoran, Zoonie McLean and Conrad Juelke each had a pair of hits for the winners.  Buddy Owens had a triple and single for the Greys.

(July 29)  Carman's losing streak reached 13 games as Williston Oilers downed the Cardinals 8-6 in a game which featured five homers.  However, it was an 8th inning single by winning pitcher Vic Michalec that turned out to be the deciding blow, scoring two runs to break a 6-6 draw. 

Oilers took the lead in the first inning on Bill Cleveland's homer with Ron Martin aboard.  Losing pitcher Walt McCoy put Carman on the board in the 2nd with a homer of his own. Oilers rebounded with another four-bagger, a three-run shot in the 3rd by Ron Bowen to give the Oilers a 5-1 lead.  Hard-hitting Benny Lott cut the lead to a run with a three-run blast in the 3rd and, after Lloyd Gearhart doubled to score Roy Weatherly in the top of the 5th for a 6-4 Oilers' lead, Lott clubbed another homer, with Jesse Douglas on base, to tie.

(July 30)   Dirk Gibbons held the league-leading Minot to eight hits to win his 10th game as Brandon blanked the Mallards 7-0.  Don Stewart led the way for the Greys with two doubles and a single.  Ellis Daugherty blasted a homer and a single.  Duke Bowman topped the Mallards with three safeties.

(July 30)   Carman went down again.  A 9-3 loss to Williston was the Cardinals 14 straight defeat.  With the win, Oilers climbed to within a half-game of the Cards in the standings. 

Roy Weatherly doubled in the first inning to score Bill Cleveland with the game's first run.  The Cards gained a temporary lead in the 2nd inning as Sammy Drake doubled and Norm Robinson and Johnny Washington followed with singles.  Williston went ahead to stay with three in the third on three singles and a pair of Carman errors.  Oilers iced the game with five runs in the 9th.  The uprising featured a two-run triple by Tony Campos and a two-run homer by Lloyd Gearhart.

(August 1)   Minot sent Carman to its 15th straight loss, 5-3.

(August 1)   Minot clobbered Brandon 19-5.

(August 2)  Carman Cardinals went down to their 16th consecutive defeat, a 14-1 thumping at the hands of the Minot Mallards.  It was an easy night for Sugar Cain as the right-hander tossed a six-hitter for his 11th consecutive win.  Mallards rapped out 15 hits including a grand slam homer by Duke BowmanOthello Renfroe had three hits and three runs scored.  Cain added a pair of safeties.

(August 3)   Ron Martin singled in Buddy Afremow with the winning run, with two out, in the 10th inning as Williston shaded Brandon 5-4.  Dick Schoonover scattered seven hits for the win.  Joe Lutz, the Oilers news first baseman smashed a homer in the 7th.  Frank Mascaro had two triples and a pair of singles for the Greys.

(August 3)   In a slugfest at Carman, Minot Mallards held off a 9th inning Carman rally to edge the Cardinals 11-10.  It was the Cards 17th straight loss.  Dean Scarborough and Neil Lettau each had three hits. Benny Lott paced the Cards with a double and three singles.  Sammy Drake of Carman and Don Corcoran of Minot each had a double and two singles.  Lettau was pounded for 14 hits but went the distance for the win.

(August 4)    Carman Cardinals rallied for three runs in the 9th inning to hand Brandon a 7-6 defeat to break the Cards' 17-game losing streak.   Pitcher Buddy Woods and Weldon Ridley punched out homers for the Cards.  Bill Spaeter and Gerry MacKay hit triples for Brandon.

(August 6)   Lloyd Gearhart's Williston Oilers whipped Carman 8-0 behind the shutout pitching of Vic Michalec.  The right-hander allowed just four hits.  Homers by Gearhart, Bill Cleveland, and Roy Weatherly paced the Oilers.  For Gearhart it was his 14th of the season, topping the league record of 13 set by Joe Massaro in 1953.  Weatherly also had a pair of singles.

(August 7)   Minot moved to within one game of clinching the ManDak League pennant by defeating Brandon 4-2.  Neil Lettau won his 12th game, against two losses, coming into the game in the 2nd inning in relief of starter Sugar CainDon Corcoran homered for the Mallards.

(August 7)   Williston Oilers scored three runs in the 8th inning to break a deadlock and notch a 5-2 victory over Carman.  Home runs by Roy Weatherly and Lloyd Gearhart highlighted the big inning.  Harry Taylor fired a six-hitter for the win.

(August 9)  Minot Mallards received a beating, but it took an All-Star team to do it.  The All-Stars whipped the Mallards 14-4 before 2,500 fans at Minot.  Three Minot pitchers, Neil Lettau, Kent Geisler and Tom Parker, were spanked for 18 hits, including a three-run homers by Frank Mascaro and Ellis Daugherty. Harry Taylor started for the Stars.

(August 10)  Minot Mallards clinched their 3rd straight ManDak League pennant with a 6-1 victory over Carman.  Southpaw Bill Washburn fired a six-hitter for his sixth win.  Mallards had 11 hits, including a double and two singles by Othello Renfroe who stretched his hitting streak to 15 games during which he's batted .500 on 30 hits in 60 at bats.  Bob Miller had a homer for the line Carman run.

(August 11)   Big Dan Ahtipis held Williston to six hits, to win his 10th game, as Brandon Greys trounced the Oilers 10-3.  Gerry MacKay drove in three runs with a double and two singles.  Frank Mascaro knocked in three with a triple and single and Lou Louden had three singles.

(August 11)   Minot Mallards rallied with two out in the 9th inning to plate a pair to down the luckless Carman Cardinals 4-3 in a game at Island Park at Portage La Prairie.  Down 3-2, successive singles by Dean Scarborough, Don Corcoran, Othello Renfroe and Joe Massaro produced the tying and winning runs.  Lester Locket had a pair of safeties for the Cards.

(August 12)   Brandon Greys virtually secured second place in the ManDak League with an 11-4 win over Williston for their 4th win in five games.  Greys extended their lead over third place Oilers to six and a half games.  Gerry MacKay slammed a homer and single for the Greys.  Frank Mascaro of Brandon and Dewey Williams of the Oilers had triples. Dirk Gibbons scattered 11 hits to gain the win, his 11th.

Carman Cardinals were rained out at Minot.

(August 13)  Ellis Daugherty clouted three homers to lead Brandon to a 7-6 win over Williston.  Daugherty had a solo blast in the second inning, a two-run homer in the third and a four-bagger with a man aboard in the 8th.  Bill Spaeter of the Greys also had a big game with four hits, including a double.  Playing-manager Lloyd Gearhart had a homer and single for the Oilers.  Roy Weatherly added a triple and two singles.

(August 13)   Minot Mallards broke loose for three runs in the 7th inning to break a 4-4 deadlock and down Carman 7-6.  Warren Martin went the distance for the win, his seventh.  John Murray took the loss although he allowed just six hits.  Murray's downfall was lack of control.  He issued 10 walks and the Cards committed four errors.  Lester Lockett led the hitters with a double and two singles. Bob Miller also has three hits for Carman.

(August 14)   Minot captured both ends of a doubleheader with Carman, 6-0 and 9-6.  Southpaw Bill Washburn notched his 7th win against one loss when he blanked Carman on six hits in the first game.  Bob Miller allowed just four hits in taking the hard-luck loss.

In the second game, Duke Bowman bashed a three-run homer in the first inning to start the Mallards on the way to their 9-6 win.  Benny Lott had a triple and two singles for Carman.

(August 14)  In a wind-swept game at Williston which produced 30 hits, Ellis Daugherty, fresh off a three homer game, drove in seven runs with a bases-loaded homer, double and single as Brandon Greys scored a 16-14 victory over the Oilers.  Gerry MacKay added a homer, triple and double.  Roy Weatherly and Joe Lutz had homers for Williston.  Lou Louden punched out four hits for the Greys. Ron  Bowen added three. Weatherly, Bill Cleveland and Ronnie Martin each had three hits for the Oilers.  Red Rose survived 14 hits and nine walks to go the distance for the win.

(August 15)   Sugar Cain knocked in Zoonie McLean with the winning run in the 10th inning as Minot Mallards shaded Brandon 7-6 for their third win of the weekend.  Reliever Fred Parker gained credit for the win over Dirk Gibbons who went the distance for the Greys.

(August 15)   Benny Lott and Walt Thomas homered as Carman dumped Williston 12-8. Joe Lutz had a four bagger for the Oilers.  Buddy Woods gave up 12 hits but gained the win in a route-going performance.  Kent Geisler took the loss.

(August 16)    Williston Oilers upended Minot Mallards 9-3.  Dick Schoonover held the Mallards to nine hits in registering the mound victory.  Sugar Cain, unbeaten in 11 previous starts, took his first loss.  Lloyd Gearhart paced the winners with a homer and single.   Ron Martin added a triple and single. Wally Bowman was tops for Minot with three hits.  Dean Scarborough belted a homer and single.

(August 16)  

(August 17)   Brandon had just two hits but managed a 4-2 win over Carman.  Greys scored two in the 2nd inning on two walks, an error and Ellis Daugherty's single and two more in the 5th on two walks and two errors.  The Cardinals, blanked for six innings, scored two in the 7th on a double by Chick Longest, an error and a triple by losing pitcher Phil JimenezRod McKay, who gave up just four hits, gained the win.

At Minot, the Mallards and Williston were rained out.

(August 18)   Carman downed Williston 5-4 to keep alive their slim hopes of a third place finish in the ManDak standings.  Walt McCoy out-pitched Ed Williams to register his 6th win of the season.  Cardinals scored the winner in the bottom of the 8th when Bob Miller beat out a bunt single, was sacrificed to second and crossed the plate on a single by Chick LongestSam Drake, Lester Lockett and Miller each had two hits for Carman.  Roy Weatherly poked a two-run homer for the Oilers.  With four games left, Carman trails the Oilers by three games.

(August 18)   Brandon Greys upended Minot Mallards 8-4.  Ralph Rose checked Minot of eight hits while Gerry MacKay's bases-loaded triple highlighted the offense.  Greys had 11 hits off Warren Martin, four of them in the first inning when they scored three times.

(August 19)  Williston Oilers blanked the league-leading Minot Mallards 8-0 to clinch third place in the ManDak League standings.  Harry Taylor, former Brooklyn Dodger hurler, fired a three-hitter for the Oilers while Joe Lutz slammed a pair of homers, one a grand slam, and drove in five.  Tony Campos also homered for Williston.

(August 19)  Brandon Greys came back from a 7-2 deficit to down Carman 10-8.  Don Stewart was the big gun for the Greys with four hits.  Bill Spaeter had a double and two singles.

(August 20)  A five-run 5th inning carried Minot to a 6-4 win over Williston as Neil Lettau pitched an eight-hitter for his 12th win of the season.  Dean Scarborough and Joe Massaro each had three hits to pace the Mallards.  Dick Baxter led the Oilers with two safeties in three trips.  All 21 hits in the game were singles.

Reports from Williston indicated that Dewey Williams, the Oilers catcher, was not in serious condition after being stabbed during a fracas on a Williston street on Friday.  Williams was expected to be released from hospital within a week.  Police were holding a man at Sydney, Montana in connection with the incident.

(August 20)  Bill Spaeter's three-run homer, with two out, in the bottom of the 9th gave Brandon a 7-5 win over Carman. The thrilling contest marked the debut of Greys' 18-year-old right-hander Morley MacFarlane, a local product.  MacFarlane limited the Cards to just four hits and fanned 12.  Gerry MacKay with a double and single paced the Greys at the plate.  Sammy Drake had an inside-the-park homer for Carman.  Benny Lott added a triple.

(August 21)   At Williston, the Minot Mallards wrapped up the regular schedule with a 10-9 victory over the Oilers.   Williston had runners on first and second with just one out when the Mallards got a double play to halt the rally.  Pitcher Fred Parker belted a two-run homer in the 6th inning for the Mallards.  The Oilers belted four homers.  Joe Lutz, Tony Campos, Buddy Afremow and Bill Cleveland all had four-baggers.

Playoffs:

(August 22)   Minot Mallards trounced Carman Cardinals 11-5 in the opening game of their best of seven semi-final series.  Mallards jumped into a 6-1 lead after just two innings and coasted to the win.  Warren Martin held the Cards to seven hits.  Phil Jimenez allowed 11 hits in going the distance for Carman.

(August 23)  Benny Lott belted a homer, two triples and a single driving in six runs to lead Carman to a 12-5 victory over Minot to even their semi-final series at a game apiece.  Chick Longest and Almer McKerlie added three hits apiece as the Cardinals belted out 17 hits against Sugar Cain. Jesse Douglas and Lester Lockett each had a pair of hits. Buddy Woods scattered 11 hits to gain the win.  Cain had a double and two singles for the Mallards.

(August 23)  Brandon edged Williston 5-3 in the opening game of their semi-final series.  Williston grabbed a two-run lead in the first inning on a pair of Brandon errors and hits by Dick Baxter and Lloyd Gearhart. Bill Spaeter got Brandon on the board in the bottom of the frame with a homer before the Oilers' Joe Lutz blasted one over the right centre field wall in the fourth inning.  Greys rallied for three in their half of the fourth taking advantage of a double by Gerry MacKay, a single by Ellis Daugherty, a passed ball and two Williston errors.  Brandon added an insurance marker in the fifth on successive singles by Lou Louden, MacKay and Frank Mascaro.  Tony Campos and Gearhart each had two hits for the Oilers.

(August 24)   Williston Oilers wiped out a 6-3 deficit with six runs in the last three frames to beat Brandon 9-6 to tie their semi-final at a game apiece.  Roy Weatherly had a triple and double for the winners while Bill Cleveland bashed an inside-the-park homer.

(August 24)  Duke Bowman drove in seven runs with a homer, double and single to led Minot to a 13-6 victory over Carman and a 2-1 game lead in their semi-final series. Dean Scarborough and Joe Massaro helped out each with three hits.  Bill Washburn went the route for the win. Mallards came from behind with five runs in the 7th inning and three more in the 8th for the victory.

(August 25)   Carman evened its semi-final with Minot at two games apiece with a 6-2 win over the Mallards at Carman.  Bob Miller fired a four-hitter for the Cardinals to best Neil Lettau, a 13-game winner during the regular season.

(August 25)   Williston Oilers punched out 17 hits over Brandon to notch an 11-5 win in the third game of their semi-final.  Roy Weatherly and Joe Lutz belted homers for the Oilers while Tony Campos added a triple. Ron Martin, Bill Cleveland and Lloyd Gearhart each had three singles.  Lefty Ed Williams went the route for the win.

(August 26)   Carman Cardinals surprised Minot with a 4-3 win to move to within one victory of a berth in the ManDak League final.  Almer McKerlie's 4th inning homer stood up as the winning run. Walt McCoy survived a 9th inning scare to take the win.  Don Corcoran, who had a two-run homer in the 2nd, singled in the Mallards' 9th and moved to second on a walk to Othello RenfroeMcCoy had a full count on Dean Scarborough before he got him on a high pop foul to McKerlie.

Chick Longest and Lester Lockett each had a double and two singles for the Cardinals.  Zoonie McLean rapped two doubles and two singles for Minot.  Corcoran had two singles as well as his homer.

(August 27)    Minot Mallards downed Carman 12-8 at Carman to even their semi-final series at three games apiece.

(August 27)  Brandon Greys topped the Oilers 10-7 at Williston to even their series at 2-2.

(August 28)   Brandon squeezed out a 2-1 victory over Williston as Rod McKay fired a five-hitter to give the Greys a 3-2 game lead in the semi-final series. Brandon took the early lead in the 2nd inning as Don Stewart doubled, advanced to second on a passed ball and, after Ellis Daugherty walked, scored on a double steal.  Greys went up 2-0 in the 8th as Daugherty singled in Lou Louden who had reached on a single.

(August 29)   Minot Mallards whipped Carman 11-3 Saturday in the deciding game of their best-of-seven semi-final series.  Neil Lettau fired a six-hitter, all singles, to led the Mallards who collected 12 hits off three Cardinals' pitchers.  After spotting Carman a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, Minot roared back with three in the send and three more in the third to take a lead they would not relinquish.  Duke Bowman and Joe Massaro each had a triple, double and single for the winners. Don Corcoran added three singles and Sugar Cain belted a homer.

(August 29)   Williston Oilers thumped Brandon 14-8 at Williston to even the semi-final and three games apiece.  A seven-run first inning and a six-run 7th carried the Oilers to the easy win.  Bill Cleveland punched out four hits to pace the Williston attack.  Lloyd Gearhart had a homer for the Oilers and  Gerry MacKay and Don Stewart belted four-baggers for the Greys.  Fred Parker and Leon Day each added three safeties.

(August 30)   Dirk Gibbons blanked Williston on six hits to give Brandon a 6-0 win in the seventh and deciding game of their semi-final series.   It was Gibbons third win of the series.  Greys scored the only run they would need in the first when Bill Spaeter singled, moved to third on a safety by Lou Louden and came home on Gerry MacKay's sacrifice fly.

(August 31)   A five-run 5th inning carried Brandon to an 8-3 win in the opening game of the ManDak League final series.  18-year-old Morley MacFarlane held the powerful Mallards to seven hits in going the distance for the win. After each club plated a pair in the 4th inning, Greys combined five hits, a walk and a hit batsman for their five runs in the 5th.  Dee Moore homered for the winners while Frank Mascaro, Don Stewart and Leon Day each had two hits.  Bill Washburn allowed ten hits in taking the loss.

(September 1)   Trailing 10-4 into the bottom of the 7th inning, Minot Mallards erupted for seven runs in their last two at bats to nip Brandon 11-10 to tie the ManDak League final at a game apiece.  Singles by Connie Juelke and Dean Scarborough and an error resulted in the tying and winning runs in the 8th.  Ron Bowen's three-run homer got the Greys off to a big lead in the first inning.  Mallards came back with a pair in the 2nd on a walk, a triple by Juelke and a passed ball.  Bill Spaeter's double knocked in a pair for Brandon in the 4th to give the Greys a 5-2 lead.  Doubles by Sugar Cain, Don Corcoran and Juelke produced two for Minot in the bottom of the 4th, but Brandon went ahead 10-4 with three in the 5th and another two in the 7th.  Neil Lettau survived to go the distance in spite of a 17-hit attack by the Greys.

 (September 2)    Minot Mallards took advantage of eight Brandon errors to down the Greys 7-2 to take a 2-1 game lead in the ManDak League final series.  Warren Martin pitched into the 8th inning to claim the win.  Mallards took a lead in the 4th inning on Martin's single scoring Don Corcoran.  Three more runs crossed the plate in the 5th as Sugar Cain drove in Duke Bowman, who had doubled, and another pair scored on Brandon errors.  That proved enough for the win.  Othello Renfroe led the Mallards with three hits.  Leon Day had a double and two singles for Brandon.

(Sept 3)   This time Brandon held on to the lead.  The Greys scored four in the 3rd inning and went on to a 5-2 win over Minot to even their series at two games each.  Right-hander Rod MacKay held the Mallards to eight hits in registering the win.  Sugar Cain took the loss giving up nine hits, six of them in the Greys' big 3rd inning.  Lou Louden and Frank Mascaro each had two hits for the winners. Duke Bowman's double for Minot was the only extra base hit.

(Sept 4)    At Minot, the Mallards downed Brandon 9-8 to take a 3-2 game lead in the best of seven final series.

(Sept 7)  Minot Mallards won the ManDak League title for the third successive year downing Brandon 9-0 to take the championship series in six games.  Bill Washburn fired the shutout, holding the Greys to six hits and pitching out of a bases-loaded, one out, situation in the 5th.

Dirk Gibbons held the Mallards off the scoreboard for three innings before a triple by Sugar Cain and a sacrifice fly by Ed Bowman plated the first run in the 4th.  Two hits and an error produced another marker in the 5th and the Mallards went ahead 4-0 in the 6th on Don Corcoran's two out, two-run, inside-the-park homer.  Corcoran led the winners with the homer and three singles.  Duke Bowman went 3 for 4.  Gerry MacKay had two hits and two walks for Brandon. 

Even with the title, Mallards scheduled an exhibition game against Indian Head.
