TERRITORY OF ASSINIBOIA, NORTH WEST TERRITORIES

Organized baseball was at a low ebb in the sparsely populated District of Assiniboia, N.W.T. in 1901 when compared with other western Canada territories bordering the United States. Lacrosse was still firmly entrenched as the king of summer sports in the N.W.T. towns of Regina (population 2,250) and Moose Jaw (population 1,158) and there did not appear to be a baseball club that summer which represented the territorial capital. Even the Regina Agricultural Association abandoned the baseball tournament which had been played in 1900. In Moose Jaw, the Crescents were without a diamond and played their lone game of the season, without a preceding practice, in late July on the lacrosse grounds.
