“E. J. Owens who jumped his contract with the baseball team was brought back from Winnipeg on Tuesday and was up for trial on Wednesday before Magistrates Venner and Hingston. He was fined ten dollars and costs, a total of fifty-eight dollars. Unless the “necessary” is dug up, he will spend thirty days at Portage, at toil that is more strenuous than baseball, wearing a suit of more colors than the Cypress uniforms.”  (Glenboro Gazette, June 3, 1909)

(July 6)   Holland suffered its most crushing defeat in years Tuesday evening falling to Cypress River 14-3. The visitors broke open a close game with eight runs in the sixth inning. The victory virtually meant the league championship for the Cypress nine who pounded out 19 hits. Bedford twirled a stellar game for the winners allowing just five hits. Third sacker Stein led Cypress River with four hits, one a two-bagger. Bird, the first baseman, cracked two doubles and a single and Sissons helped with three hits.

(July 6)  Treherne blanked Carman 5-0 at Carman as Murphy tossed a two-hit shutout. He also contributed to his victory by slamming out a triple and single. Word around the league suggests Brandon has been after the service of Murphy and the hurler is expected to join the club immediately. The ex-Maroon has excelled both on the mound and at the plate this season.
