WESTERN CANADA LEAGUE
Edmonton shortstop Pete Morse captured the batting crown in the Western Canada Baseball League with a batting average of .339 in 97 games. Calgary outfielder Jack Clynes was the runner-up with a .325 mark, just ahead of outfielder Roy Mills of Edmonton. Third baseman Wally Smith of Calgary was fourth, at .305. Clynes had the most hits, 125. Smith led in runs scored, 81, triples, 10, and home runs, also with 10. Morse was tops in stolen bases, 75.
The published batting statistics showed many players with averages which did not match the at bats & hits displayed. In most of the cases the difference appears to be a simple rounding error, but there are at least a dozen players with significant discrepancies. In trying to determine which of the three figures might be incorrect, a check of box scores for seven of the more prominent players found the averages published to be "in the ball park" with the figures for at bats the most likely error.
For example, White of Edmonton was shown with a .208 average based on 37 hits in 117 at bats (which would work out to a .316 average). However, the box scores showed the at bat total to be 177 (which would, with 37 hits as shown, be an average of .209). And, the averages shown in the year-end report were in line with statistics printed August 27th. Zimmerman, for example, was shown with 207 at bats for the season (in the year-end statistics) yet had 239 in the August publication (in which the statistics had been compiled up to the first week of August).
Thus, batting statistics below feature two "PCT" columns, the actual figure (derived from the at bats & hits shown) in the column second from the right and the "official" one published in the Reach Guide of 1911, at the extreme right. The "total bases" column is not shown as the numbers for almost every player were incorrect.
Newspaper reports also reported flaws in the pitching statistics compiled by the league office. Even The Sporting News (October 20, 1910) noted a major flaw in the pitching statistics.
"There is evidently some error in the pitching figures as Dellar is given 22 games won and six games lost, with a percentage alleged at .856, which is manifestly incorrect. The figures, however, are just as officially issued and whether there should be more games won, fewer games lost or the percentage decreased, is impossible to ascertain."
In the official pitching records, the games won total 365, while the games lost total just 350. And, even with the higher number, 365, it does not match the number of games played, 390, even accounting for games won by forfeit.. There are many obvious errors. Thus, below we present both the official pitching statistics and those derived from the box scores and game stories. In the official statistics there are, as noted above, errors in the "percentage" column plus discrepancies in wins and loses (also, Engle should be Englebretson and Hinrichs should have been noted as with Brandon not Regina).
Early in the season it was noted that statistics were missing from two games at Lethbridge as the scorer had apparently lost the reports.
According to pitching records compiled from box scores and game reports, Del Manning of Calgary was the class of the hurlers registering a record of 27 wins and just 4 loses in 34 games pitched, 33 of them starts. The left-hander completed 28. Lefty Harry Hinrichs of Brandon was the workhorse of the league having worked in 39 games, 34 of them starting assignments. He led the league with 30 complete games

* Of the 128 players listed in the Reach final statistics, close to half the averages published did not match percentages derived from the at bats and hits shown. Most were minor, likely
rounding errors, but there were seventeen players who had differences of more than a point.
Wilson, listed at .293, would have been at .296 with the hits and at bats shown. Walters was shown at .282, but with the at bats and hits shown would have had a .256 average. Baxter .272-.293; Dudley .260-.263; Krueger .259-.252; Sullivan .249-.259; Zimmerman .246-.353; Daschbach .245-.237; Skeels .227-.164; Hartford .224-.228; Manning .219-.193; Lynch .210-.241; Olson .209-.239; White .208-.316; Harper .206-.204; Gaddy .170-.167; Morrow .139-.141
