1914 REGINA COMMERCIAL BASEBALL LEAGUE

(June 12)  The diamondeers representing the Lumber Yards solidified their grip on top spot in the Commercial League’s first-half standings with a one-sided 17 – 6 thumping of the Law Students.

(June 15)  A 3 – 1 loss by the Cockshutts to the McRae-Nelson aggregation handed the first-half Commercial League tiara to the idle Lumber Yards’ baseballers. Middle pasture patroller Dick of the vanquished Tractormen was the game’s top hitter, singling three times.

Lamb (L) and Hipwell

(August 20)  The Cockshutt nine, with Lloyd toeing the rubber, easily defeated I.H.C. 9 – 4 to annex the second-half crown for Regina’s Commercial Baseball League. The contest, played at Dominion Park, drew the largest crowd of the 1914 campaign. Wild during the early stages of the game, winning tosser Lloyd settled down and hurled with precision for most of the remaining innings. He was touched for but two base hits, fanned seven, walked four and hit two batters. Leading swatsmith for the victorious plowmen was second baseman Frank Mastel who homered and singled off losing chucker Mutt Smith of the Harvesters.

(September 3)  A scheduled best-of-three series between the first-half winning Lumber Yards and the second-half champion Cockshutts was called off when team captain Ritter of the Woodmen acknowledged that their roster had been depleted through unforeseen contingencies related to the outbreak of the Great War in Europe. Accordingly, the Cockshutts were declared as 1914 Regina Commercial League titleholders.
