1934 BC Baseball Cards

Red Star  That must be some scrapbook.  Thank you Danny Holden Jr. for these Vancouver baseball cards from his Uncle Larry's scrapbook.  Larry Holden was an outstanding pitcher for nearly 20 years in Vancouver amateur ball.

The Holdens were quite the sports family on the west coast. Larry was one of five sons - Larry, Leo, Eddie, Roy and Danny - of Barney Holden who, while a star ball player, was likely better known from his exploits at the hockey rink.

Barney HoldenBarney was the subject of a book, "Cross Check!"  by grandson Danny.  He was one of the first ever professional hockey players. In fact, he scored the first goal in the first game of the first pro hockey league game in 1904. He played in the National Hockey Association, the forerunner of the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.

All the boys played in Vancouver's amateur ball leagues and Danny Sr. went on to a 17 year career in pro ball, first playing in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system. Roy too played some pro ball and Leo travelled abroad to suit up with clubs in England.

As you might imagine, the cards, from around 90 years ago, were not in the best of shape. But, we've done our best to digitally refresh and make them more presentable. They are believed to be part of the Vancouver "Peanuts" series, sets of cards sold with peanuts during the 1930s.

For details on the cards, check the story at Pre-War Cards, (which is fitting as the stories refer back to our little site for details on the players).
