FOOTHILLS LEAGUE
Lashing out a hit for every two turns at bat, Max Bentley, Currie shortstop, wound up with a spectacular .500 batting average to lead the 1944 Foothills Senior Baseball League in hitting. Bill Hansen of the No. 3 Fliers was second with a .410 average. Hansen’s 32 base hits topped the circuit while teammate Mitch Pechet scored the most runs, 33.
Right-hander John Carpenter of the Fliers topped the hurlers with a perfect 7-0 record, a tad better than teammate Jack Stover who finished with seven wins and one loss.

VICTORIA SENIOR LEAGUE
Navy outfielder Jack Walker is the batting champion of the Victoria Senior League for 1944. The official statistics show Walker finishing with a .474 mark, a runaway winner over teammate Gil Bruce who sported a .370 average. Eddie Sheppard of the Army squad wound up the season with a .405 average, but without at least 50 at bats to qualify for the batting title. Walker took over the lead about midseason from Maurice Duffy of V.M.D.and increased the gap as the season went along. Gar Taylor, the steady second sacker of the Eagles, finished third, at .359, and Duffy was fourth at .355. Bud Werstine of Army rounded out the top five. Duffy and Bruce tied for the lead in runs scored, each with 22. Walker had the most hits, 37. Charlie Stroulger, the Eagles' shortstop, topped the circuit with 21 runs batted in. Noel Morgan, the speedy V.M.D. centre fielder, captured the base stealing title, pilfering 20 bags.
Cy Shillito, ace of the V.M.D. staff led the hurlers with a 9-1 record in 11 games, a total of 80 innings. Jimmy Crosato of the Navy was the runner-up with six wins and one loss in eight games. Shillito and Billy Surphlis of the R.C.A.F. nine, tied for the lead in complete games, each with seven. Lloyd Cann of the Army racked up the most strikeouts, 48, but teammate Tony Maze came in with 32 in just 28 innings. Cann went 78 innings.
