1955 Game Reports     

(April 13)  At the league meeting in Saskatoon, the first trade of the season was announced.  Lloydminster Meridians swapped left-handed starter Max Weekly to the Mallards for outfielder Collins Jones.

(June 8)  The Gems pushed across four runs in the seventh and held on to beat North Battleford 5-3 in the season opener at Saskatoon.  Newcomer Charlie Bogan pitched a complete game, six-hitter and fanned 10 to get the win.  Bogan started the winning rally with a single.  A walk to Mario Herrera, followed by singles from Jose Valladares, Cliff Pemberton and Max Bentley produced the four markers.

(June 9)  Roy Dean had three hits including a homer and a double to pace the Beavers  to a 9-5 win over the Gems at North Battleford.  Cliff Pemberton had a pair of doubles and a single for Saskatoon.

(June 10)  Len Breckner and Max Bentley each had three hits to power the Gems to a 7-4 victory over North Battleford at Cairns Field.  In Edmonton, the Eskimos squeaked by the Meridians 3-2 in the opener for both clubs.   Lefty Belter out dueled Lefty Arnold as both went the distance. 35-hundred fans were on hand.  Esks scored the winner when Lloydminster outfielder Roberto Zayas lost John Huber's fly ball in the lights and it dropped in scoring two runs.  The American coaching pals, Roy Taylor of College of the Sequoias and Pete Beiden of Fresno State, squared off as Regina and Moose Jaw saw their first action.  The Braves pounded out 14 hits for a 10-5 win in Regina.

(June 11)  Eskimos beat the Meridians 16-9 in a slugfest at Renfrew Park. Jim Ryan had a grand slam for the Esks,  Don Stewart had three hits, including a homer, for Lloydminster.  A crowd of 3-thousand, the largest in years in Moose Jaw, saw the Mallards win their homer opener 6-4, over Regina. Max Weekly, back in Moose Jaw after a season in Lloydminster, went all the way for the win. Tony Levaggi had a homer for the Mallards. Saskatoon had four triples -- from Percy Trimont, Jim Shirley, Joe Kretschmar and Mario Herrera -- in a 13-5 trouncing of North Battleford.

(June 12) North Battleford's John Branom tossed a no-hitter but didn't get a win. The contest, the second game of a double-header, was called after eight innings by a Sunday curfew law with the Beavers and Saskatoon tied 1-1.  Wayne Capinegro tossed a three-hit shutout as North Battleford beat Saskatoon 6-0 in the first game. Edmonton and the Meridians split a twin-bill at Lloydminster.  Jimmy Valentine drove in Chuck McGuigan in the bottom of the ninth to give the Meridians their first win of the young season.  Lloydminster beat Edmonton 9-8 in the first game.  McGuigan had walked to open the inning.  The Meridians' second sacker led the club with two hits, including a double, and had a pair of stolen bases.  Eddie Barrack got the win in relief of starter Vic Berry.  Eskimos got two-hit pitching from John Doucette in the second game and walked away with a 9-0 victory. Doucette and Cal Bauer had homers. McGuigan, who had one of the two hits, was beaned by Doucette in the sixth inning.  He stayed in the game.

(June 13)  Charlie Johnson singled in two runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Meridians came from behind to beat Saskatoon 8-7 at Sportsman's Park.  Del Flanagan, from Unity, picked up the win in relief of Lefty Arnold.  Lloydminster had a five-run fifth inning which included doubles by Johnson and Chuck McGuigan and a homer by Curly Williams.  Lloydminster announced the team had received Bill Duft and Kirby Wyllie from Moose Jaw to complete the trade which also involved Collins Jones, Max Weekly and Darrell MartinAl Phillips held Regina to three hits as North Battleford beat the Braves 5-1.

(June 14)  Saskatoon broke loose for five runs in the fifth inning to down the Eskimos 6-4 at Renfrew Park.  There were five triples in the game, Cliff Pemberton and Gerry Morris for the Gems, and Jim Ryan, Cal Bauer and Norm Forbes for the Eskimos. Lefty Charlie Bogan got the win.  Moose Jaw battered four North Battleford hurlers for 12 hits en route to a 13-3 win.  Tom Higa of the Mallards had the only homer.

North Battleford announced it had obtained lefty Bob Rosell from Lloydminster in a deal for Bob Finnie.

(June 15)  Cal Bauer's inside-the-park homer sparked Edmonton to an 11-8 victory over the Gems.  It was one of four hits by Bauer.  At Regina, pitcher Jim Leopp scored the winning run in the 10th inning as the Braves shaded North Battleford 5-4 before 1,200 fans at Regina. Leopp went all the way on the hill, scattering nine hits. Three of the four runs against Leopp were unearned as the Braves committed seven errors. Catcher Bill Schulz drove in Leopp, who had singled, with the winning run with a single to left field.  Leopp had earlier laid down three sacrifice bunts and walked. Schultz led the Braves with two hits and two runs batted in.

(June 16)  A four-run fifth inning was the key as Saskatoon beat Lloydminster 10-7.  The Gems had 10 hits, including two apiece by Jerry Morris, Cliff Pemberton and Jay OwensDon Stewart, Jim Valentine and Curly Williams each had two for the Meridians.  Stewart made the game's fielding gem making an over-the-shoulder catch on the dead run near the right field fence in the seventh.

(June 17)  A sloppy performance by the Saskatoon defense led to seven unearned runs as North Battleford scored a 7-3 win at Cairns Field.  Lew Hobson, up from the Saskatoon junior team, and Wayne Capinegro for the Beavers, went the distance.  Edmonton's John Doucette won his second straight as the Eskimos beat Regina 5-2.  Gary Jackson belted a homer for the Esks.  Len Farrell had three hitss

(June 18)  Saskatoon had 14 hits in a 12-0 beating of Moose Jaw.  Percy Trimont and Jim Shirley each had three.  Charlie Bogan got the shutout.  At Edmonton, Regina pounded out 17 hits in whipping the Eskimos 12-8.  Jim McMahon had four hits and Pat Mills contributed a homer and a double.

The first release of statistics showed Don Stewart of Lloydminster and Cal Bauer of Edmonton tied for the batting lead with averages of .471.  Charlie Bogan of Saskatoon topped the pitchers with three wins, 25 innings worked, and 25 strikeouts.

(June 19)  The Gems swept a twin-bill from the Meridians 8-6 and 3-1.  Percy Trimont had a three-run homer and a two-run single in the opener. Lloydminster outhit the Gems 10-6 in the second game but lost to Bennie GriggsOllie Harris went the distance for the Meridians.  Don Stewart had three hits, including a triple and a double.  Collins Jones of the Meridians suffered a broken finger when sliding into home in the final inning of the second game.  Edmonton bounced back to beat Regina 8-3 as Keith Bowman made his debut on the hill for the Eskimos. George Read homered for Regina while Cal Bauer and Len Karlson each had three hits for Edmonton.  Moose Jaw took a pair from North Battleford.  Rich Rubio accounted for all the Mallard runs in the opener as he had three hits including a double and homer as Moose Jaw won 3-1.  Darrell Martin allowed just five hits and fanned 11 in gaining the victory.  Johnny Ford had a homer for the Beavers.  The second game saw a pitching gem between Moose Jaw's Ruben Alvarez and Sergio Martinez of North Battleford.  The Mallards scored four in the 12th inning to win 5-1.  Tom Higa's three-run homer was the key blow.  Alvarez struck out 15 and Martinez fanned 13.

(June 20)  Edmonton trounced Moose Jaw 14-2 to move into sole possession of first place.  Outfielder Norm Forbes blasted a pair of homers and a single, good for five RBI. Jim Ryan also homered for Edmonton.  Ed Belter, who went the distance on the hill for the Esks, scattered six hits.  In North Battleford there were two grand slam homers as the Braves beat the Beavers 10-6.  Ken Nelson's four-run blast in the second gave the Beavers a 6-3 lead.  That was wiped out in the third as Regina catcher Bill Schulz followed three walks with a bases-clearing blow.   North Battleford announced the release of pitcher-outfielder Johnny Williams.

(June 21)  Saskatoon turned four hits and three errors into four runs in the 7th inning and went on to beat the Meridians 5-2.  Jackie McLeod went all the way for the win.  At Regina, the Braves and Eskimos combined for 38 hits, 5 errors and 35 runs.  Regina won 20-15, overcoming an 8-0 Edmonton lead.  Second baseman Joe Gaitan had a big day at the plate for the Braves with a double and four singles in six trips. First baseman Joe Pedrazini belted a double and three singles and scored four times. Ron Hager and Art Shahzade each had two hits and four walks. Bill Schultz drove in a pair and scored three. Edmonton pitchers gave up 15 walks. Jim Harney had two triples and a single for the Esks and Len Farrell added a triple, two singles and three runs scored.

(June 22)  Saskatoon won its fifth straight, 6-5 over Lloydminster.  Joe Kretschmar was 3-3 for the Gems.  Regina hammered North Battleford 19-2 as Art Shahzade and George Read each had three hits.  Ronnie Watts held Edmonton to six hits as Moose Jaw topped the Eskimos 7-2.

(June 23)  Veteran Bennie Griggs tossed a two-hitter as Saskatoon shutout Moose Jaw 5-0.  Darrell Martin was the hard-luck loser.  The 18-year-old right-hander allowed just eight hits, but three Mallard errors contributed heavily to the defeat.  Edmonton beat Regina 7-5 with lefty Kirby Pain going the distance for the win.  North Battleford broke out for seven runs in the fifth inning and trounced Lloydminster 13-5.  The Beavers had 17 hits, with three apiece by Johnny Ford, Chico O'Farrill and pitcher Wayne Capinegro.

(June 24)  Bob Jones was the hero at the plate and on the mound as the Gems beat Regina 8-2.  The right-hander had a homer and two RBI with the bat and went all the way on the hill, fanning nine.  Playing-manager Ken Nelson had three hits to lead the Beavers to a 12-10 win over the Meridians at Lloydminster.  Collins Jones had three safeties for the Meridians.  Edmonton and Moose Jaw battled to a 3-3 tie in 13 innings.  Both pitchers, Ed Belter and Ruben Alvarez went the distance.  Roy Taylor's bases-loaded, squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 8th tied the contest.

Batting statistics showed Moose Jaw's Rich Rubio as the leading hitter with a .556 average.  Cliff Pemberton of Saskatoon was the top slugger with 12 hits and 16 total bases.  

(June 25)  It was hardly a pitchers' duel in North Battleford as the Meridians and Beavers pounded out 33 hits and scored 30 runs.  Lloydminster won16-14 with two runs in the 10th inning.  Beavers had scored five in the bottom of the 9th to tie.  Roy Dean of North Battleford and Jim Valentine of the Meridians belted 9th inning homers.  George Read knocked in Art Shahzade, who had tripled, with the winning run as Regina shaded Edmonton 7-6.  Read had four hits, including two doubles to drive in three runs. Jim Harney had four hits for Edmonton. Saskatoon took advantage of seven Moose Jaw errors to score a 5-4 win at Cairns Field.   Gems got only eight hits off lefty Max WeeklyCharlie Bogan, who went all the way on the hill for Saskatoon, had three of the safeties.

(June 26)  In his first start for Lloydminster, right-hander Ray Looney made an instant impression.  Looney held Moose Jaw to two hits as the Meridians scored a 4-0 victory in the first game of a double-header.  Leftfielder Collins Jones made two spectacular running catches to preserve the win.  Rich Rubio had four hits in the second game as the Mallards won 14-9.  Kirby Pain of Edmonton and Tom Garcia of North Battleford hooked up in a pitchers' duel in the opener of a twin-bill in North Battleford.  Eskimos won 2-1. The Beavers came back to win the second game 8-3 paced by a two-run homer by Bob BaylessNorm Forbes had a homer for Edmonton.

(June 27)  Saskatoon won its ninth in a row, 5-1 over North Battleford.  Bennie Griggs allowed just six singles and fanned 10 to get the win.  The Beavers announced the release of first baseman Happy Carlson and the trade of Al Phillips to Edmonton.  Lloydminster released pitcher Bob Finnie.

(June 28)  The Gems ran their winning streak to 10 games beating Moose Jaw 4-2 behind Bob Jones' five-hitter.  Jim Shirley had four hits and Cliff Pemberton three for Saskatoon.  Lloydminster scored twice in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Regina 5-4.  Dick Barry and Jim Valentine each had three hits for the Meridians.  Playing-manager Don Stewart made a spectacular running catch in the 9th to keep the Meridians in the ball game.  Ray Looney, who pitched to just one batter in the 10th in relief of Lefty Arnold, got the win.  Lloydminster announced another import pitcher, Bill Bailey, had joined the team.  A triple play featured Edmonton's 6-4 victory over North Battleford.   North Battleford had two runners on base -- Bob Bayless at first and Chico O'Farrill at second -- with none out in the eighth inning.  Shortstop Len Farrell caught Art Stone's liner, fired to second baseman Jim Johnson to double O'Farrill, and the relay to first baseman Jim Ryan caught Bayless for the third out.

(June 29)  Johnny Ford had four hits, including two triples, as North Battleford shaded Edmonton 4-3 at Renfrew Park.  Lloydminster announced the acquisition of pitcher Barney Brown from the Minot Mallards of the ManDak League.

(June 30)  Max Weekly was the star as Moose Jaw came back from a 6-1 deficit to beat Regina 10-6.  Weekly, who came on in relief in the fifth,  belted a two-run homer in the sixth then held the Braves scoreless the rest of the way.  Tony Levaggi also had a homer for the Mallards.  Speedy centre fielder Glen Streeter had a double and a single and scored twice.

(July 1)  Moose Jaw's Ben Reniker allowed just five hits and fanned 10 in a 5-0 shutout of Regina.  Roy Zivanich had a homer and Glen Streeter two hits for Moose Jaw.   Edmonton bounced the Meridians 10-2 and 12-4 in a twin-bill at Renfrew Park.  There were four homers, Len Farrell, Stan Kulka and Cal Bauer for the Esks and Collins Jones for the Meridians.

(July 2)  The Saskatoon winning streak stretched to 11 games as the Gems beat Regina 6-2.  Gems had 13 hits off Braves' newcomer Ted Ellis. Bob Jones scattered 11 hits for the win. North Battleford scored in the 11th on an error, a passed ball, an infield out and a fielder's choice to edge Moose Jaw 6-5.  Bill Sheffield had a pair of homers for the Mallards.  Dave Able had a solo shot. Tony Levaggi had three hits. The Mallard's Darrell Martin had a shutout into the bottom of the ninth when the Beavers scored five times on six walks, a hit batsman, and a pair of errors.

(July 3)  The largest crowd of the season in Saskatoon, some 45-hundred fans, watched the Gems post their 12th straight victory in the Western Canada Baseball League. Sergio Fabre pitched six strong innings in relief as the Gems beat North Battleford 6-4. Dale Bloom made his WCBL debut a winning one as he allowed only four singles as Edmonton beat Moose Jaw 4-1.  Cal Bauer had three hits, including a homer.  The Meridians thrilled the home fans taking both ends of a twin-bill from Regina, 5-4 and 5-1.  Barney Brown made his debut for Lloydminster in the second game and came away with a victory.  Catcher Dick Barry picked off six base runners during the double-header.  Don Stewart had a perfect 4-4 in the second game.

(July 4) Saskatoon Gems punched out 13 hits for 13 runs to beat Lloydminster for their 13th straight win, 13-7.  Cliff Pemberton, with a pair of triples, was one of five Gems with two hits.  Curly Williams led the Meridians' attack with three hits.

Dixie Walker fashioned a three-hitter as Regina shutout North Battleford 9-0.  Charlie Peerless and George Read had homers. 

Max Weekly allowed just four hits as Moose Jaw beat Edmonton 5-3.  Until the 8th inning, the only hit off the left-hander was a towering fly ball that dropped between Glen Streeter and Lou Hague in right centre.

(July 5) North Battleford scored four runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Lloydminster 10-5.  Newcomer Art Worth went all the way for the victory.  Johnny Ford led the Beavers at the plate with three hits.

(July 6)  Saskatoon's winning streak ended at 14.  Regina's Ted Ellis set down the Gems on four-hits in the second game of a double-header as the Braves won, 5-1. Newcomer JD Peterson, who tripled as a pinch-hitter in the first game, had two hits for Regina as did Jim McMahon and Bill Schulz. Gems won the opener 5-3 as Jim Shirley had four hits and Bennie Griggs tossed a five-hitter.  Gems' Cliff Pemberton and Regina owner Denny Evenson were ejected after they came to blows in the fifth inning of the first game.  Pemberton, playing third, objected to Evenson's heckling from in front of the bleachers a few feet from his third base position.  North Battleford pounded Edmonton 17-9.  Roy Dean had a homer, triple and a single.  Stan Kulka homered for the Esks.  Moose Jaw doubled up on Lloydminster 10-5, scoring all their runs in the first three innings.  Bob Holowaty went the distance for the Mallards.

(July 7)  Ruben Alvarez pitched a 5-hit shutout as Moose Jaw beat Regina 5-0. The game was called after seven innings by rain.  Lou Hague, Dave Abel and Rich Rubio each had two hits for the winners.  Bill Sheffield added a triple

(July 8)  Edmonton took a pair from the league-leading Gems, 2-1 and 9-3.  Esks won a pitching duel in the opener as Dale Bloom and Saskatoon's Charlie Bogan each tossed six-hitters. Both the Edmonton runs were unearned. Edmonton had 11 hits in the nightcap, including three from Len Karlson, to move to within three games of the Gems in the league standings.  Lloydminster broke a tie with three runs in the 7th to defeat North Battleford 5-2.  Barney Brown went the distance for the win.  Jim Valentine and Curly Williams each picked up a pair of hits for the Meridians.  Beavers had two players ejected from the game.  Ken Nelson and Johnny Ford were tossed for arguing umpire's decisions.

(July 9)  Ben Reniker, 18-year-old Moose Jaw right-hander, limited Regina to five hits as the Mallards won 9-2.  Saskatoon took a pair from North Battleford, taking a 5-1 win in the completion of the June 12th 1-1 tie, and winning the regular game 4-3.  Two errors by Beaver third baseman Johnny Ford helped the Gems make a runaway of the completion game.  Beaver's Jim Branom had taken a no-hitter into the 9th.  He took the loss and reliever Sergio Fabre picked up the win.  Branom was also the loser in the second game as the Gems scored four in the 3rd inning and it held up for the 4-3 victory.

(July 10)  It was a lost weekend for the Beavers.  After dropping a pair to Saskatoon on Saturday, North Battleford dropped a twin-bill to Regina on Sunday, 4-3 and 4-2.  The Braves got route-going performances from Dixie Walker and Ted Ellis.  The Beavers got the homers -- Roy Dean in the first game and Art Worth in the second.  Moose Jaw got just three hits off Bob Jones but took advantage of eight bases on balls to beat the Gems 5-2.  Max Weekly allowed just six hits in gaining the decision.  Kirby Pain tossed a two-hitter as Edmonton beat Lloydminster 6-1 in the first of a double-header. Esks' catcher Ed Garay had a homer in the second.  Meridians scored four runs in the first inning of the second contest but couldn't hold the lead losing 7-6. Charlie Johnson belted a three-run homer for Lloydminster, Norm Forbes had a bases-empty homer for Edmonton.  Meridians introduced a new outfielder, Glen Streeter who started the season with Moose Jaw.

(July 11) Saskatoon edged Regina 5-4 scoring the winning run on a 7th inning error. Len Breckner had a homer for the Gems.  Saskatoon's Cliff Pemberton had three hits.

(July 14)  Ken Nelson singled home Charlie Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th as North Battleford edged Moose Jaw 3-2.  Tom Garcia pitched a 3-hitter for the win.  Darrell Martin took the loss.  Barry Brown pitched the Meridians to a 3-2 win over Regina in the second game of a twin-bill at Lloydminster.  Curly Williams had a pair of doubles for the winners.  The new Meridian shortstop, Tom Lavin, knocked in two runs with a single in the second inning.  Braves took the opener 9-3, scoring six times in the third.

(July 15)  Kirby Pain, a schoolteacher from Seattle, pitched a no-hitter in Edmonton's 5-0 victory over the Regina Braves.  Pain struck out eight and walked four.  Norm Forbes provided the offense with a two-run homer in the first inning. Jim Ryan also homered. A grand slam homer by Collins Jones and a three-run blast by Roberto Zayas sparked Lloydminster to a 14-7 win over North Battleford.  Jones also had a pair of doubles and six RBI.  Meridians playing-manager Don Stewart was out of the lineup with a leg injury. Bill Stites gave up just five hits in winning for the first time in a Gem uniform as Saskatoon trounced Moose Jaw 9-0.  Cliff Pemberton, Joe Kretschmar and Len Breckner each had two hits for the Gems.

(July 16)  Saskatoon had 17 hits, 10 stolen bases, and took advantage of 11 Lloydminster errors to whip the Meridians 16-4.  The Gems had only one extra base hit, a double by Joe Kretschmar. Jose Valladares had three hits for Saskatoon and scored four times.  Curly Williams, with a homer,  was the lone bright spot for the Meridians. Ted Ellis allowed just six hits and aided his cause going 4 for 5 at the plate as Regina hammered Edmonton 10-2.  Joe Pedrazzini also had four hits for the Braves.

(July 17)  Charlie Bogan tossed a 3-hitter to lead the Gems to a 6-1 win over the Meridians in the first game of a double-header at Lloydminster.  The home side won the nightcap, 6-5, scoring twice in the bottom of the 9th. Curly Williams raced home to score the winner while an argument was in progress around second base.  Williams had three hits in the game, including a homer.  Regina scored six times in the sixth and beat Edmonton 6-3.  Ron Hager and George Read each had three hits for the Braves.

(July 18)  Norm Forbes blasted a pair of home runs to lead Edmonton to a 10-7 win over the Beavers at North Battleford.   Jim McMahon and Joe Gaitan each had two safeties as Regina got by Lloydminster 7-4.  Len Breckner belted a homer and a triple as Saskatoon beat Moose Jaw 8-6.

(July 19)  Jack Motley, a newcomer to the Gems, hit two triples to drive in three runs and scored another as Saskatoon beat Regina 4-1.  Jackie McLeod went the distance allowing seven hits.  Jim Shirley had three hits for the Gems.  Bill Sheffield doubled home two runs in the second inning then scored on Rich Rubio's homer as Moose Jaw defeated Lloydminster 5-3.  Bob Holowaty tossed a six-hitter in getting the win.  Edmonton got back-to-back-to-back home runs from Cal Bauer, Norm Forbes and Jim Ryan and shaded the Beavers 7-6 in in 11 innings at North Battleford. The game also featured three other homers, from Gary Jackson of the Eskimos and Art Worth and Leopoldo Reyes of North Battleford.  Worth had four hits and three RBI.

(July 20)  Kirby Pain, who threw a no-hitter the previous week, held Saskatoon to four hits as Edmonton beat the Gems 4-0.  It was the fourth win in five games for the Eskimos against the Gems.  It was 100-degrees in Moose Jaw as the Mallards and North Battleford split a twin-bill.  Beavers took the opener 14-3.  Johnny Ford had three of the fifteen North Battleford hits.  Centrefielder Lou Hague had four hits as Moose Jaw won the second game 6-3. North Battleford's Art Worth had the only homer.  Lloydminster scored eight runs in the 9th inning for an 11-4 win over Regina.  Collins Jones paced a 16-hit Meridians' attack with a triple and a double.  Don Stewart had a two-run triple in the sixth while Jim Valentine had a bases-loaded triple in the ninth.  Tom Feldstein went the distance for the win.

(July 21)  Saskatoon got three triples in the first two innings, good for six runs and coasted to an 11-4 win over Edmonton.  Jack Motley, Percy Trimont and Cliff Pemberton had the three-baggers.  Charlie Bogan picked up the win.  The Mallards won a slugfest in Moose Jaw, beating Lloydminster 16-11.  The game was called in the 7th by darkness.  Lou Hague was 5 for 5 at the plate, giving him 9 straight hits.  Rich Rubio had three singles.  Curly Williams, Roberto Zayas and Jimmy Valentine each had three hits for the Meridians.  Don Stewart contributed a two-run homer.  In spite of giving up 16 hits, Darrell Martin went all the way for the win.   Regina swept a pair from North Battleford.  Noel Mickelsen made his debut for the Braves in the opener, holding the Beavers to 4-hits in the 5-3 win.  Ted Ellis won his fourth straight for Regina as the Braves won the second game 8-4.   Regina had 10 stolen bases in the game.

(July 22)  Max Weekly, signed by the New York Yankees, celebrated with a relief win over Saskatoon.  Weekly came on with the Mallards down 5-4 and allowed just two hits over the last six and one-third innings as Moose Jaw scored an 11-5 victory.  Roy Zivanich paced the winners with a double and three singles.  Lou Hague, the Moose Jaw centrefielder, had a single and triple in his first two plate appearances to run his consecutive hit streak to eleven.  He flied out in the fourth inning.  Cliff Pemberton and Mario Herrera each had a double and single for the Gems.  Lloydminster scored a run in the 9th to tie, then tallied in the 10th to beat Regina 6-5.  Pitcher Barney Brown, who singled, scored the winner on a safety by Jim Valentine.  Brown went the distance on the hill.  Curly Williams had two triples for the Meridians with Collins Jones chipping in with three RBI and Don Stewart with a triple.  In another extra-inning affair, Edmonton edged North Battleford 10-9 in 10 innings.  Catcher Ed Garay scored the winner on a hit by pitcher John Doucette.  Beavers' Art Worth had tied the game 9-9 with a homer in the bottom of the 9th.  Len Karlson of the Eskimos and Ken Nelson of the Beavers also had homers.

(July 23)  Eskimos whitewashed the Meridians 12-0 on Dale Bloom's five-hitter. Home runs by Lou Hague and Bill Sheffield gave Moose Jaw a 6-2 victory over Regina.  Hague had two hits in three trips to give him 13 hits in 16 at bats in his last three games. Percy Trimont belted a pair of homers as the Gems beat North Battleford 7-5.  Art Worth had his fifth homer for the Beavers.  Roy Dean had three hits for North Battleford.

(July 24)  North Battleford swept a twin-bill from Regina, 4-3 and 10-2.  Chico O'Farrill singled home Johnny Ford with the winner in the bottom of the ninth in the opener.  Braves had tied the game in the top of the ninth on three singles and Art Shahzade's double. Art Worth tossed an eight-hitter as Beavers easily won the nightcap.  Both Braves' runs came on homers, by Jim McMahon and Joe PedrazziniCharlie Johnson homered for the Beavers.  Roy Dean suffered a dislocated elbow in the second game in sliding into second base.  In the fifth inning of the second contest, Beavers' Johnny Ford made all three outs on line drives, two of them on diving catches.  Edmonton announced that manager Roy Carlson was leaving the team to take a school teaching position in Germany.

(July 25)  Shortstop JD Peterson tripled in the 7th and scored the winning run on Ron Hager's single as Regina topped Moose Jaw 6-5.  Ted Ellis held the Mallards to six hits in gaining the victory.  Edmonton announced Jim Ryan as the club's manager for the rest of the season.

(July 26)  Regina got outstanding pitching from George Read and Noel Mickelsen to take a pair from Moose Jaw, 3-2 and 4-0.  Read allowed only three hits in the first game and Mickelsen threw a 4-hitter in the second.  It was Read's first start on the mound this season.  Joe Pedrazzini was the hitting star for the Braves with a triple and single in the opener and four hits in the second game.  Kirby Pain of Edmonton had his shutout streak stopped at 30 2/3s innings but picked up the win as the Eskimos downed North Battleford 4-1.  Pain, who had pitched back-to-back shutouts, gave up a run in the 7th inning.  Shortstop Len Farrell had a homer, double and single for Edmonton.

(July 27)  Darrell Martin pitched a one-hitter and fanned 11, but needed a two-run rally in the 9th to pick up a 4-3 victory.  Playing-manager Roy Taylor provided a story-book finish.

"Mallards were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, with two on base and two out, when the sagacious, poker-faced Moose Jaw mentor teed off on a three-two pitch to plate the tying and winning runs.  Following the thrilling climax, elated fans streamed onto the field to congratulate the popular, mild-mannered manager." (Moose Jaw Times-Herald, July 28, 1955)

The only hit surrendered by Martin was a fifth inning, two-run homer by opposing pitcher, Dixie Walker.  Braves picked up a run in the first inning when Ron Hager worked Martin for a walk then proceeded to steal second, third and home.  Edmonton jumped on the Beavers for 15 hits and capitalized on seven North Battleford errors to walk away with a 14-2 victory.  Eskimos' pitcher Keith Bowman had the only home run.

(July 28)  Charlie Bogan held the Western Canada League all-stars to just six hits as the Gems scored a 7-0 shutout.  Earlier, North Battleford took an 8-6 exhibition game win from Saskatoon.  The game was called at the end of five innings to enable the Gems to return to Saskatoon for the all-star game.

(July 29)  Veteran Barney Brown held Edmonton to just four hits as the Meridians shutout the Eskimos 4-0.  Don Stewart poked a two-run triple in the first inning to give Lloydminster the lead.  Jim Valentine and Curly Williams drove in the other runs.  Rich Rubio had three hits and Ron Watts tossed a four-hitter as Moose Jaw beat Regina 4-2.  Ted Ellis was the loser.

(July 30)  Dale Bloom three-hit the Meridians as Edmonton beat Lloydminster 3-1 in the first game of a double-header.  Norm Forbes and Jim Ryan each had two hits for Edmonton.  Meridians bounced back to win the second game 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the ninth.  Bill Bailey relieved starter Tom Feldstein in the first and went the rest of the way for the victory. Forbes had three hits for Edmonton.  Moose Jaw trounced Regina 11-4 as Bill Sheffield had a homer, double and single.  Roy Taylor had two hits and Max Weekly went the distance on the hill for the Mallards.

(July 31)  North Battleford upset the league-leading Gems, twice.  Beavers scored three in the 8th to take the first game 3-1.  Art Worth's leadoff homer in the second inning of the nightcap and Charlie Johnson's three-run blast in the third were the big blows as North Battleford won 6-3.  Lefty Belter held Lloydminster to four hits as Edmonton scored a 3-1 win in the first game of a twin-bill.  Playing-manager Jim Ryan had two hits and knocked in all three runs.  The second game was called by the Sunday curfew with the teams tied 7-7 after nine innings.  Curly Williams and Pete Prediger had home runs for the Meridians.  Dixie Walker's four-hit pitching carried Regina to a 5-1 win over Moose Jaw.  JD Peterson and Noel Mickelsen, playing the outfield, each had three hits for the Braves.

(Aug 1)  Art Worth did the damage as North Battleford trampled the Meridians 12-4.  Worth hit for the cycle, a homer, triple, double and two singles, and had four RBI.  Lloydminster played without playing-manager Don Stewart who suffered a knee injury in Edmonton.  Wayne Capinegro picked up the win, allowing just four hits but giving up 10 walks.  Moose Jaw clobbered Regina 11-1 behind five-hit pitching from Ruben Alvarez and a balanced hitting attack.   Roy Zivanich had three hits.  Bill Sheffield smashed a homer.  It was Moose Jaw's tenth win in 15 outings against Regina.

(Aug 2)  The young Arkansas schoolboy out dueled the Negro League veteran as Saskatoon beat Lloydminster 2-0.  There were only six hits in the game, three for each side.  Charlie Bogan got the win, his 9th of the season.  Barney Brown walked in both runs in the fifth inning to suffer the defeat.  Edmonton defeated North Battleford 8-5.  Art Worth was the losing pitcher, but the top hitter in the game with three hits.  Regina shaded Moose Jaw 4-2 in a pitching duel between Ted Ellis of the Braves and Darrell Martin of the Mallards.

(Aug 3)  Bob Jones settled down after a shaky first inning to lead Saskatoon to a 6-2 win over Regina.  Jones allowed three hits and both runs in the opening frame, but allowed just three more safeties the rest of the way, fanning 13.   Kirby Pain held North Battleford to four hits as Edmonton scored a 7-2 win.  Mallards outscored the Meridians 8-7 in a wild game in Moose Jaw.  Lloydminster outhit Moose Jaw 10 to 6, but committed six errors.  Meridians' playing-manager Don Stewart was tossed from the game in the sixth inning for disputing a call. The game ended in protest as the umpire called the game in the eighth after Lloydminster had scored three runs to come to within one of a tie.  Players stormed onto the field to protest the decision and, for a time, were joined by spectators.  Glen Streeter, Dick Barry and Ray Looney each had two hits for Lloydminster.  Curly Williams connected for a homer in the sixth for the Meridians, Roy Zivanich matched it in the bottom of the inning for Moose Jaw.

(Aug 4)  Lloydminster pushed across ten runs in the third inning and held on to beat Regina 15-13.  The game featured 28 runs, 24 hits, 9 errors and 24 walks.  Barney Brown, Roberto Zayas and Curly Williams had triples for the Meridians.  Saskatoon overcame a grand slam homer by Tony Levaggi to beat Moose Jaw 9-6.

(Aug 5)  A brilliant relief effort by Ruben Alvarez led Moose Jaw to a 5-3 win over Lloydminster.  Alvarez came on in the first after the Meridians had scored three times off starter Ben Reniker.  He allowed just four hits the rest of the way.  Rich Rubio had the key blow for Moose Jaw, a three-run single in the sixth. Collins Jones had two doubles and a single for the Meridians. Saskatoon and North Battleford tied 4-4 in a game called by curfew.  The Gems announced their pitching staff would be bolstered by the addition of Don Kirk who pitched with the team last season.

Don Stewart of Lloydminster took over the lead in the batting race according to the latest statistics from Howe News Bureau.  Stewart increased his average to .382.  His 52 hits included seven doubles, five triples and two home runs.  Three Edmonton players followed, Cal Bauer and Len Farrell at .371 and Norm Forbes at .357.  Forbes was tops in homers with eight and shared the RBI lead with Len Breckner of Saskatoon, each with 37.  Charlie Bogan of the Gems had the most wins, nine, and the best ERA, 2.19.  Bob Jones of the Gems had the most strikeouts, 90

(Aug 6) Ted Ellis hurled Regina to a 7-1 win over Lloydminster.  Ellis held the Meridians to five hits, fanned nine and walked only one.  Suge Carter, in his first game for the Braves had a triple, a single and two RBI.  Saskatoon and Edmonton split a pair.  Eskimos won the opener 4-2 behind Dale Bloom's pitching and Cal Bauer's homer.  Gems took the second game 5-3 as Charlie Bogan won his 10th.

(Aug 7)  Saskatoon pounded out 20 hits in a 15-10 drubbing of Edmonton in the first game of a double-header.  Five of the Gems had three hits apiece, Jim Shirley, Jackie McLeod, Cliff Pemberton, Jose Valladares and Joe KretschmarCal Bauer of Edmonton had the only homer.  Kirby Pain pitched a three-hit shutout in the second game as the Eskimos won 3-0.  There were shutouts in North Battleford as well.  Darrell Martin blanked the Beavers 2-0 in the first game while Les Dean tossed a three-hit shutout for North Battleford in the nightcap as the Beavers won 3-0.  Local fans presented the Dean family with trophies and presents between games.

(Aug 8)  Charlie Bogan's sacrifice fly in the 10th plated the winning run as Saskatoon shaded Moose Jaw 7-6.  Gems had scored in the bottom of the 9th to tie 4-4, but the Mallards scored a pair in the top of the 10th to go up 6-4.   Mario Herrera's triple knocked in two and Bogan's fly ball scored Herrera.  Bogan, who came on in the 9th and pitched to four batters, picked up the win, his 11th.  Edmonton got five runs in the fourth inning and beat Regina 6-4.

(Aug 9)  Tom Feldstein went the distance scattering nine hits as Lloydminster scored a 6-2 win over North Battleford.  Feldstein, Curly Williams, Don Stewart and Roberto Zayas each had two hits for the Meridians.  Homebrew Lew Hobson notched his first win for the Gems as Saskatoon won 5-4 over Regina.  Hobson worked five innings before giving way to Charlie Bogan.  Coach Pete Beiden was back with the Braves after spending three weeks in Fresno conducting a baseball school.  Edmonton took a pair from Moose Jaw, 4-3 and 12-9.  Cal Bauer's homer was the difference in the opener as the Eskimos needed just one inning to complete the 3-3 tie game of June 24th.  Dale Bloom got the win and followed up with another in the second game as he went the distance.  Bauer had four hits in the nightcap.  Norm Forbes had a two-run homer in the first for the Esks.

(Aug 10)  Meridians got a fine pitching effort from Ray Looney and edged North Battleford 3-2.  Looney allowed six hits in a route-going performance.  Meridians got a run in the first when Don Stewart drove in Roberto Zayas.  In the fourth, Glen Streeter drove in both Collins Jones and Chuck McGuiganJohnny Ford had two hits for the Beavers.  Regina exploded for nine runs -- eight of them unearned -- in the eighth inning to turned back Edmonton 12-2.  Up to that point fans had witnessed a pitching duel between team aces -- Kirby Pain for Edmonton and Ted Ellis for the Braves.  Ellis picked up his 8th win.  There were 13 errors in the game, nine by Regina. Bill Schultz and Suge Carter paced the Regina attack each with two hits and three runs batted in.

(Aug 11)  Darrell Martin held Edmonton to five hits and got home run support from Roy Zivanich and Tony Levaggi as Moose Jaw trounced the Eskimos 13-2.  Mallards pounded out 14 hits including eight for extra bases.

(Aug 12)  Jackie McLeod pitched a five-hitter and drove in both runs as Saskatoon edged Lloydminster 2-1 in a pitchers' duel at Cairns Field.  Barney Brown allowed the Gems just seven hits.  Ben Reniker gave up 11 hits but no runs as Moose Jaw topped Regina 5-0.  Jim McMahon had a double and three singles for the Mallards.  Suge Carter added a double and a pair of singles.

(Aug 13)  North Battleford scored all their runs in the fourth inning and beat Lloydminster 6-1.  Art Worth got the complete game victory.  Bob Jones pitched a two-hitter to lead the Gems past Regina 3-1.  Moose Jaw had a five-run eighth inning in their 6-3 win over Dale Bloom and the Eskimos.  Ronnie Watt won on a four-hitter.

(Aug 14)  Lloydminster couldn't hold a 7-0 lead and dropped an 11-7 decision to Moose Jaw as the Mallards swept the double-header.  Ruben Alvarez held the Meridians to five hits in the first game as Moose Jaw won, 6-1. 

Alvarez scattered 5 Lloydminster safeties in chalking up his sixth win of the season as the Moose Jaw squad took game one. Moose Jaw counted 3 times in the first and then sent starter Ray Looney to the showers with another 3 run outburst in the sixth. Tom Feldstein shut the door the rest of the way but it was a case of too little, too late. Both teams chalked up 5 hits but the Meridian defense was atrocious, committing 6 errors. First sacker Roy Zinavich of the Ducks picked up 2 hits for the winners.

In the nightcap, Lloydminster took a 7 - 0 lead in the 2nd inning but the Mallards fought back with four in the 4th, five in the 6th and two in the 7th to clobber the Meridians 11 - 7. Southpaw Max Weekly held the border town boys to 6 hits while his teammates ripped the offerings of 4 Lloydminster hurlers for a total of 12 base knocks. Veteran Barney Brown, who replaced starter Bill Bailey in the 4th, absorbed the loss.

Ted Ellis allowed just a bloop double to centre in the fifth inning in shutting down Edmonton 4-1.  The lone marker against Ellis was unearned.  A three-run homer by George Read was enough for the win.  Saskatoon and North Battleford split a pair. Lefty Wayne Capinegro held the Gems to three hits and Bob Rosell poked out a double and two singles as Beavers won the opener 8-3.  Gems won the nightcap 4-3 on Cliff Pemberton's two-run double in the third and Len Breckner's two-run homer in the seventh.  Lew Hobson got the win.

(Aug 15)  It was to have been a battle of aces -- Charlie Bogan for Saskatoon and Kirby Pain for Edmonton.  But, it turned into a rout as the Eskimos trounced the Gems 11-2.   Playing-manager Jim Ryan powered the Edmonton attack, driving in five runs with a homer, double and a single.  Cal Bauer also homered for the Eskimos.  Suge Carter slammed a double and three singles, driving home four runs as Regina topped Moose Jaw 8-3.  Noel Mickelsen allowed just four hits in pitching the distance.

(Aug 16)  Jackie McLeod was the winner on a five-hitter as Saskatoon beat Edmonton 8-2.  Joe Kretschmar, Cliff Pemberton and Len Breckner each had two hits for the Gems.  Moose Jaw and Lloydminster fought to an 8-8 tie in a game called because of darkness.  Meridians outhit the Mallards 13 to 5.  Dick Barry had a triple and Chuck McGuigan a pair of doubles.  Roy Zivanich homered for the Mallards.

(Aug 17)  Darrell Martin and Max Weekly combined to scatter ten hits as Moose Jaw beat Saskatoon 14-6 in the first of a double-header.  Three Moose Jaw errors accounted for three of the Gem runs.  Rich Rubio with a homer and a single and Tom Higa with a pair of doubles paced the Mallard attack.  Cliff Pemberton had a triple and a double for Saskatoon.  Gems won the second game 10-6 as Percy Trimont clubbed a three-run homer.  Bill Sheffield had a homer for Moose Jaw.  Pemberton had three hits in the second contest.  Regina took two from Lloydminster, 6-5 and 8-1.  Meridians had a five-run lead in the first game but let it slip away and lost in 13 innings as Howie Zenimura drove in the winning run.  In the nightcap, the Braves took advantage of thirteen walks.  JD Peterson led the Braves at the plate with a triple and two singles.  Curly Williams had a double and three singles for the Meridians.

(Aug 18)  Ronnie Watts spaced out seven Lloydminster hits to earn the win as Moose Jaw beat Lloydminster 5-1.  Earlier, in the completion of the August 16th 8-8 tie, the Meridians needed just one inning to pull off a 10-8 victory.  Roberto Zayas led off with a single, stole second and scored on Jim Valentine's single.  Collins Jones' triple scored an insurance run.  Saskatoon won two from North Battleford.  Gems took a 5-4 win in the continuation of the August 5th 4-4 tie, then scored a 10-3 victory in the regular contest.  In the completion game, Cliff Pemberton's single drove in Mario Herrera with the winner.  Sergio Fabre picked up both wins, although he didn't throw a ball in the first game as the contest was picked up with the Gems at bat.  He went all the way in the second game allowing eight hits.  Art Worth was the losing pitcher in both games.

(Aug 19)  Saskatoon clinched top spot in the Western Canada League with a 13-7 victory over North Battleford.  Charlie Bogan picked up his 12th win with relief help from Bob JonesCliff Pemberton drove in five runs.  Len Breckner had an inside-the-park homer.  Louis Green had three hits for the Beavers.  Max Weekly tossed a four-hitter as Moose Jaw opened a four-game series in Edmonton with a 4-3 victory.  Eskimos made it close with three unearned runs in the eighth. Mallards scored the winner on a bases-loaded walk by Jerry Seaman.

Don Stewart of Lloydminster continued to lead the hitters in the Western Canada Baseball League with a .355 average.  Cal Bauer of Edmonton remained in second spot with a .348 mark while Saskatoon's Cliff Pemberton climbed into contention moving into third place at .338.  Norm Forbes of Edmonton had the lead in homers, with nine, and RBI with 51.  Ted Ellis moved into the ERA lead at 1.95.

(Aug 20)  Cal Bauer batted in five runs, with a triple and two singles, to lead Edmonton to an 11-5 win over Moose Jaw in the first game of a twin-bill at Renfrew Park.  Bauer was also key in the second game as he knocked in two runs and scored once as Eskimos won 4-2.  It was a costly victory.  Ace lefty Kirby Pain was carried from the field on a stretcher after he tore knee ligaments while base running.

(Aug 21)  Cal Bauer continued to destroy Moose Jaw pitching.  He belted a three-run, first inning homer to carry Edmonton to a 5-1 victory. Keith Bowman pitched a four-hitter to get the win.  Lloydminster had 13 hits in beating North Battleford 9-5 in the first game of a double-header.  Collins Jones homered for the Meridians in the 7th while Jim Valentine and Ray Looney chipped in with three hits apiece and Chuck McGuigan contributed a pair.  Bob Rosell and Ken Nelson each had three hits for the Beavers.  Les Dean pitched his way out of trouble to get the win in the second game as North Battleford won 6-4.  Dean allowed eight hits and nine walks.  He had 12 strikeouts.

(Aug 22)  22 runs, 26 hits, 11 errors.  Out of that came a 12-10 victory for Saskatoon over Regina.  Ted Ellis, the Regina ace, was shelled in the fourth.  Don Kirk lasted just five innings for the Gems.  Jose Valladares scored four times without an official at bat.  He walked five times.  Moose Jaw and Lloydminster fought to a 2-2 tie in a game called after eight innings because of darkness.  The rival playing-managers, Roy Taylor of Moose Jaw and Don Stewart of the Meridians,  took over the mound work and performed well.  Taylor gave way to Max Weekly in the 7th and Stewart gave himself the hook in the same inning when the Mallards tied the game 2-2.  Each club had six hits.

(Aug 23)  North Battleford played in two different cities Tuesday and lost both times.  Moose Jaw beat the Beavers 11-10, while in Regina, the Braves topped North Battleford 9-8 in 11 innings.  Moose Jaw scored eight runs in the fourth inning and then held on while the Beavers made it close with five in the eighth and a singleton in the ninth.  Darrell Martin and Max Weekly were the batting stars.  Martin had three hits while Weekly clubbed a homer. Regina came back from a 7-2 deficit to beat the Beavers in 11 innings.  Joe Gaitan led off the bottom of the 11th with a triple and scored when Suge Carter reached out to slam a single to right field while pitcher Johnny Ford was attempting to walk him intentionally.  Joe Pedrazzini had two triples, a double and a single for the Braves.  Edmonton wound up its home schedule by whipping Lloydminster 10-9 and 16-8.  In the afternoon contest, the completion of the July 31st 7-7 tie, Meridians went ahead 9-7 in the 11th only to have the Eskimos tie it in the bottom of the inning and win it in the 12th.  In the regularly scheduled game, Edmonton tallied 11 runs in the seventh inning.  Meridians made 15 errors, 7 in the first game, 8 in the second.

(Aug 24)  It was a grand night for Mallard's manager Roy Taylor.  The community held "Roy Taylor Night" to honour his achievements and the club went out and wound up the regular schedule with a double-header sweep of North Battleford, 9-5 and 2-1.  Darrell Martin and Ben Reniker pitched complete games for the Mallards.  Regina and Saskatoon split a pair.  Lew Hobson pitched the Gems to a 5-2 win in the opener while Dick Leopp's six-hitter beat Saskatoon, 6-4, in the nightcap.  Edmonton and Lloydminster battled to a 2-2, 11-inning tie.  Barney Brown went the distance allowing just five Edmonton hits.  Meridians got 10 hits off John Doucette. Roberto Zayas and Don Stewart each had two his for the Meridians while Jim Valentine added a triple and Collins Jones a double. Gary Jackson had two singles for Edmonton.

Saskatoon finished the season with 46 wins, five more than Edmonton.  Moose Jaw was third and Regina grabbed the fourth and final playoff spot.

Cliff Pemberton of Saskatoon, with a late charge that saw him hit nearly .500 down the stretch,  captured the batting title with a .360 mark, well ahead of the runner-up, teammate Jim ShirleyCal Bauer of Edmonton had the most homers, 10.  Dale Bloom of Edmonton won the ERA title with a 1.72 mark.  Teammate Kirby Pain was second.  Charlie Bogan of the Gems had the most wins, 12. Mario Herrera of Saskatoon had 30 stolen bases to lead the league.
