Introduction - The Southern League is back to a six-team circuit for the 1962 campaign as the Balcarres Braves have decided to withdraw, citing an insufficient number of available, competitive players as the rationale for their decision. The Moose Jaw franchise informed the league of a name change. The team will now be called the Regals. Another unbalanced schedule will be in place for the 1962 season. The Moose Jaw Regals and Regina Red Sox will both play 34 games. The remaining four clubs have been scheduled to play 28 games.
(May 23) Right-hander Lorne Houk turned on his former mates, spinning a classy four-hitter and striking out seven, to pace the Notre Dame Hounds to a 4 - 1 victory over the Fort Qu'Appelle Sioux Indians in the opening game of the 1962 Southern League season. The Sioux scored their only run in the opening frame and it was unearned, courtesy of two Notre Dame miscues. Norm Goodwill, on the mound for Fort Qu'Appelle, matched Houk's four-hit performance and fanned 13 but was betrayed by a shoddy defense and took the loss. Only one Notre Dame run was earned.
