MANITOBA SENIOR BASEBALL

At times, both major baseball circuits were called the Manitoba Senior Baseball League. One, the Eastern Division, the other, the Western Division.  They would not meet during the regular season and kept separate statistics.

(June 5)  Transcona Atomics began defense of their Winnipeg Senior Baseball League crown with a 3-2 victory over the Orioles at Balmoral. Transcona got the winning run on a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning. Ron Twerdochlib, who had knocked in the first Atomics' run in the fourth, reached on an error and Ken Ingram followed with a single to bring in reliever George Ledochowski who promptly loaded the sacks by walking Bob Hunter and then forced in the deciding marker with four balls to Bob Audette.  Balmoral had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on two walks, an error, and a single by Ron Jaremy. Transcona tied it in the eighth on singles by Buzz Lamond, Audette and pinch hitter Alex Sereda. Hunter twirled a three-hitter but walked six. He racked up 16 strikeouts.

(June 7)   CUAC Blues waited until the late innings to rev up their offense but then ran wild to erase a 7-0 deficit and went home with a 9-7 victory over Balmoral. Blues rapped 15 hits and overcame five errors. Orioles had 11 hits and made just one miscue. Steve Derewianchuk drove in three runs with three hits for the winners. Don Craw added three singles and Nick Banera and Chris Kowal each knocked in two runs with doubles. Gary Underwood pounded out four hits for Balmoral.

(June 15)   Terry Hrycyk allowed just two hits in pitching into the ninth to lead CUAC Blues to a 4-2 win over St. Boniface Maple Leafs. Hrycyk walked seven and fanned five in his 8 2/3s innings of work. Don Zaleski took the loss.

(June 16)   After three postponements, the Transcona Atomics finally got to play their home opener and they made it a successful one downing Balmoral Orioles 5-2. Bob Audette tossed a four-hitter for the win. Len Harvey led the winners with three hits.

(June 19)   Again, the CUAC Blues used a late rally to come from behind to post their third straight victory. Playing at home Sunday, the Blues shaded Balmoral 8-7. Dan Yackobowski picked up the pitching win in relief. Gary Underwood of Balmoral was the game's top hitter with a triple and two singles.

(June 19)  St. Boniface pulled off a double upset Sunday, defeating Transcona in both ends of a double-header, 14-13 and 12-7. The Maple Leafs came from behind in both games. In the opener Terry Moore's three-run homer gave the Atomics a big lead but the Leafs battled back to finally tie the game in the eighth as John Helston drove in Garry White then scored the winner himself. Jack Seitz belted a homer for Transcona.

In the second game, St. Boniface broke a 7-7 tie in the eighth with a five run outburst. Gary White's bunt scored catcher Gib Pritchard with the winning marker. Jack Ritchie, who had a double and single in the first game, sparked the offense with a 450-foot homer. Losing hurler Bob Hunter clubbed a circuit blow for Transcona and Buzz Lamond had three hits.

(June 22)   Transcona and CUAC Blues battled to a 6-6 tie Wednesday in a game called after eight innings. The game is to be rescheduled. Atomics out-hit the Blues 11 to 8.

(June 21)   Jack Ritchie's mighty bat powered St. Boniface to a 9-7 win over Balmoral Tuesday at Elmwood. Ritchie smacked a triple and three singles. Ray Shuel, Archie Curtis and winning pitcher Curly LeClerc each had two hits. Maples Leafs exploded for five runs in the last three innings to capture the victory.

(June 26)   St. Boniface edged CUAC Blues 3-2 Sunday at Provencher Park, the first loss of the season for the Blues. Ray Shuel led the winners scoring twice with two hits and two stolen bases. Don Russell scored the winning marker on a wild pitch. Bill Predinchuk allowed just four hits in posting the pitching win. He fanned eight and walked three. Don Kosowan, also with a four-hitter, took the loss. He had 12 strikeouts and five free passes.

(June 26)  CUAC took an early 5-1 lead and coasted to its fourth win of the season, dumping Balmoral 8-3 Terry Hrycyk registered his second win of the season.

(June 26)  Transcona Atomics swept their Sunday double-header shellacking St.Boniface 12-0 in the first game and crushing Balmoral 12-3 in the nightcap.  Bob Audette had a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the opener until Lorne Fiddler cracked a single. Audette wound up with a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. Len Harvey led the Atomics with a double and two singles.

Bob Hunter held Balmoral to five hits in the second game, setting down 13 via the strikeout route. Cam Hurst powered the St. Boniface attack with a home run and a single.

(June 29)  Terry Moore pitched and batted Transcona to a 6-1 victory over CUAC Blues Wednesday. Moore fired a five-hitter and fanned 14 while powering the offense with a homer, triple and single. Gerry Mercier added a triple and two singles and Ron Twerdochlib added three singles. Steve Derewianchuk paced the Blues with a triple and single.

(July 5)   With standout performances by brothers Bob and Art Essery, the Balmoral Orioles upended Transcona 3-1 Tuesday at Balmoral. Bob Essery held the defending league champions to six hits while Art Essery cracked a home run and a single. Larry Hart took the loss although yielding just five hits.

(July 7)  Transcona had another pitching and batting star Thursday in an 8-2 win over CUAC Blues. This time it was Bob Audette, who won his third straight mound decision, blasting a homer and single. Gerry Bolin collected four hits for the winners and Jack Seitz drove in three runs. The Atomics rapped 14 hits. Bert Bolin had a homer and single for the Blues.

(July 7)  Balmoral nipped St. Boniface 4-3 in ten innings. George Ledochowski fired a five-hitter and fanned nine in going the distance for the win. Peter Genyk and Bob Essery were the leading hitters for the Orioles.

(July 10)  Bob Hunter shutout CUAC Blues 10-0 Sunday to advance the Transcona Atomics to first place in the Manitoba Senior League standings and entitle the Atomics to meet the league All-Stars. Hunter fanned 11 and walked one.

(July 11)   CUAC Blues whipped Balmoral 7-3 Monday as John Kosowan won his third decision and Steve Derewianchuk slugged a double and triple. Bill Fosty added a pair of hits.

(July 12)   Steve Derewianchuk rapped a triple and single and Bill Fosty had three hits to pace CUAC Blues to a 5-4 victory over Balmoral, their second win over the Orioles in two days. Joe Psooy was the winning hurler.

(July 12)   Transcona Atomics punched out 12 hits Tuesday to down St. Boniface 5-2. Norm Rogoski led the winners with a double and two singles. Ron Twerdochlib and Len Harvey each had three-baggers. Barry McFarland picked up the win.

(July 19)   With three runs in the ninth inning, CUAC Blues topped Transcona Tuesday 5-2. Joe Psooy went the final three frames for the pitching win besting Bob Hunter. Dennis Gamble rapped three hits to pace the winners. Cam Hurst took care of the Atomics scoring with a two-run homer.

(July 26)  Transcona regained the top rung in the league standings Tuesday topping Balmoral 5-3 as Paul Chartrand tossed a five-hitter and struck out eight. Art Potter took the loss giving up eight hits. Chartrand helped his own cause with a three-bagger. Bob Hunter also had a triple.

(July 27)   Behind a 14-hit attack, Transcona Atomics clipped CUAC Blues 6-5 Wednesday to cinch the league pennant.. Bob Hunter went the route for the mound triumph scattering seven hits and whiffing ten. Cam Hurst rapped three hits to led the winners. Hal Westberg rapped a double and single for the losers.

(August 3)   CUAC Blues downed St. Boniface 5-4 Wednesday. Dennis Gamble knocked in the winning run with a triple in the ninth inning. Steve Derewianchuk got two hits for the winners and Jack Ritchie had a pair for St. Boniface. John Kosowan picked up the win in relief of starter Terry Hrycyk. Don Wiley took the loss.

(August 4)   Ken Ingram slugged a grand slam homer and a triple, but it wasn't enough as the Transcona Atomics went down 9-7 to the CUAC Blues Thursday in Manitoba Senior Baseball.  Norm Rogoski also homered for the losers while Al Westberg led the Blues with three hits. Bill Fosty, Nick Banera and Chris Kowal each had a pair. Danny Yackobowski earned the pitching win with six innings of no-hit relief.

PLAYOFFS   

(August 7)   The Manitoba Senior League playoffs kicked off Sunday with a pair of double-headers. St. Boniface took a 2-0 lead in their set with CUAC Blues with 7-2 and 10-9 victories. Transcona and Balmoral split with the Orioles winning the first game 6-4 and Atomics rebounding to take the second 9-2.

Bill Predinchuk was outstanding for St. Boniface in the opening game with a two-hitter and 13 strikeouts. In one stretch he retired 15 in a row. Cliff Shufelt cracked a homer for the winners.

In the second game, St. Boniface fell behind 9-2 before rallying to edged the Blues 10-9. The winning marker scored on an error by losing pitcher Dan Yackobowski. Bill Wayne helped the winners with a triple and single.

Trailing 4-1 in the ninth, Balmoral erupted for five runs to top Transcona 6-4 as George Ledochowski bested Bob Audette in the mound wars.

Atomics romped to a 9-2 win in the second game behind the six-hit hurling of Bob Hunter. Transcona rapped 13 hits off a pair of Orioles pitchers. Gerry Bolin paced Transcona with five hits on the day.

(August 9)   CUAC defeated St. Boniface 5-1 for their first win in the semi-final series. Al Westberg provided the key hit, a bases-loaded triple. Steve Derewianchuk smacked a homer. Joe Psooy was the winning hurler.

(August 9)  Transcona Atomics are just a game away from a berth in the league final having downed Balmoral 5-1 Tuesday. Barry McFarlane held the Orioles to just two hits while Jack Seitz led the offense with two doubles and a single.

(August 11)  Transcona crushed Balmoral 13-1 Thursday to advance to the league final. Bob Hunter sparked the Atomics with a three-run homer while Gerry Bolin, Norm Rogoski and winning pitcher Bob Audette each had three hits.

(August 11)  CUAC Blues forced a fifth and deciding game in their semi-final with St. Boniface taking Thursday's contest 4-0 behind the strong hurler of Dan Yackobowski who blanked the pennant-winners on seven hits. Bill Predinchuk, who allowed just five hits, took the loss.

(August 14)  St. Boniface-Notre Dame advanced to the league finals of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League Sunday defeating CUAC Blues 7-5 to take the series three games to two. Gerry Brisson led the winners with a home run and two singles. Jack Ritchie added a triple and single and Ray Brunel had a double and single. Steve Derewianchuk cracked a three-bagger for the Blues. Don Wiley was the winning hurler.

(August 16)   Jack Seitz cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday to give Transcona a 5-3 victory over St. Boniface in the opening game of their final series. With the score tied 3-3 and Bob Audette on second with a two-bagger, Seitz unloaded with the game-winning blow. Bob Hunter held St. Boniface to three hits in going the distance on the mound for the Atomics. He fanned 11.

(August 18)   Southpaw Bob Audette fired a three-hitter and racked up 13 strikeouts Thursday as Transcona coasted to 6-1 victory over St. Boniface and a 2-0 lead in the series. Atomics pounded out 11 hits off a pair of St. Boniface hurlers with Ron Twerdochlib pacing the attack with a homer and double. Audette added a triple and single. Jack Seitz had a double and single.

(August 21)  Leading the Eastern Division final 3 games to none and up in the fourth game 2-1 after seven innings, Transcona Atomics fell apart Sunday night as St. Boniface ran wild scoring ten times in the eighth inning to nab an 11-3 victory. The St. Boniface rally began with an error by losing pitcher Terry Moore and singles by Jack Ritchie and Gerry Brisson. Bill Predinchuk singled, Garry White smacked a double, John Helston singled and the rout was on. St. Boniface collected then hits and seven walks. Predinchuk held the pennant winners to eight hits in picking up the win. Cliff Shufelt led the winners with three hits.

In the afternoon game, at Transcona, the Atomics smothered St. Boniface 9-2 to take a commanding 3-0 game lead in the series. Barry McFarlane was the winning hurler.

(August 23)    St. Boniface staved off elimination Tuesday edging Transcona 2-1 as Garry White knocked in both runs for the winners. Don Russell hurled a six-hitter to best Bob Hunter in the mound duel.

(August 25)   Paul Chartrand, the regular Transcona catcher, took a turn on the hill Thursday and with his arm and bat led the Atomics to their third straight Eastern Division championship in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League defeating St. Boniface 7-2 in the deciding game of their final series. Chartrand went all the way giving up just six hits and racking up eight strikeouts. At the plate, Chartrand collected four hits. Gerry Bolin helped out with a pair of doubles. Atomics now meet the winner of the Brandon-Hamiota series.

(August 30)   Cam Hurst rapped a pair of home runs to power Transcona Atomics to a 4-3 win over Isaac Brock Royals in the first game of a best-of-seven playoff for the City Baseball Championship. Isaac Brock won the Manitoba Junior Baseball title this summer while the Atomics captured the Eastern Division of the Manitoba Senior League. The game was called after six innings because of darkness. Bob McFarlane twirled a five-hitter for the win with six strikeouts and six walks. Dave Dalke took the loss.

(September 18)     Already down one game in the Manitoba Senior Baseball final and trailing 4-0 after seven innings in the second game, Transcona Atomics launched a huge rally to bring in seven runs in the eighth inning to notch a 7-4 victory against the powerful Brandon Cloverleafs. Brandon took the first game of the double-header 2-1, scoring both runs in the fourth inning. Maurice Oakes led off the fourth with a walk and Tommy Town singled. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and romped home on Bob Wilson's long single. Transcona struck in the eighth getting just a singleton on Ron Twerdochlib's ground out after loading the sacks on singles by Bob Audette, Gerry Lavery and Jack Seitz. Stan Furman needed relief help from Ron Toews to chalk up the mound decision. He allowed five hits.

Down 4-0 in the eighth stanza in the second game, Atomics loaded the bases on a singles by Audette and Rick Simcoe and a walk to Barry McFarlane. Gerry Bolin singled to plate the first run and Jack Seitz reached on a fielder's choice to score another. A wild pick-off throw by Ron Toews allowed the third run to come home. After Ron Twerdochlib walked, the tying run scored on a passed ball. Cam Hurst singled and and Terry Moore's one-bagger produced the go-ahead marker. Audette, up for the second time in the inning, sent two more runs home when he slammed a triple to deep left field. McFarlane worked eight innings to garner the win. He gave up six hits and two walks.  Audette led the winners with a triple and two singles.

(September 24)   With a 3-2 victory, Transcona took a 2-1 game lead in the best-of-five Manitoba Senior final. The teams meet in a double-header Sunday.  Bob Hunter baffled the Cloverleafs limiting the Western champions to five hits while racking up 14 strikeouts. Cam Hurst hit a double and two singles to lead the Atomics.

(September 25)   In a thrilling finish Sunday, Maurice Oakes poked one between first and second in the tenth inning to score Gerry MacKay with the winning run as Brandon topped Transcona 6-5 to win the Manitoba Senior Baseball title taking the deciding game in the best-of-five series. With two out in the tenth, Garry Greaves singled and MacKay drew a free pass. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Oakes notched the game winner. Brandon appeared well on the way to victory holding a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh. But the Atomics exploded for four runs to go ahead 5-4. Cloverleafs got the tying counter in the seventh, With Bob Wilson on third base with two out, Ron Toews drew a walk and bluffed a steal getting caught in a rundown between first and second. While Toews raced back and force avoiding a tag, Wilson raced home with the tying counter.

In the afternoon, Brandon, trailing 4-1 after seven frames, needed three in the eighth to tie and notched a pair in the 12th to a 6-4 triumph to tie the series 2-2. Cloverleafs loaded the bases in the 12th on a walk to Mike Repin, Gerry MacKay's bunt single and a free pass to Maurice Oakes. Tommy Town drove in the winner with a fly ball to right and Wilson singled in an insurance run. Brian Hodgson took over from starter Stan Furman in the fourth and picked up the win.  Hodgson needed help in the bottom of the 12th as Moore and Hurst reached with singles with one out. Toews came in to get a double-play to end the game.  Transcona out-hit the Cloverleafs 14 to 8 with Rogoski, Ken Ingram and Hart each with three hits.

(May 20)  A pair of Virden hurlers combined to hold St. Lazare to two hits Friday as the Oilers upset the defending champions 5-3 in a seven inning fixture to kick off the new season. Ted Bridgett picked up the win with four outstanding innings of relief. All the St. Lazare runs were unearned as Virden committed four errors. Oilers won with just four hits.

(May 25)   Brandon Cloverleafs lashed out 14 hits Wednesday to crush Dauphin Redbirds 12-3 to get off to a winning start in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League. Brian Hodgson and Stan Furman combined to hold the Redbirds to just three hits. Outfielder Bob Wilson paced the Leafs attack with a two-run homer and a single.

(May 25)   Mickey Torres and Gary Keating combined on a shutout as St. Lazare blanked Souris 5-0 Wednesday playing before a home crowd. Bill Carpenter fanned 13 in seven innings in taking the loss.

(May 26)   Right-hander Bob Thompson tamed his former team Thursday holding St. Lazare to one hit through six innings as Brandon downed the Athletics 8-1.  He fanned five and walked one before handing over mound chores to Ron Powers. Cloverleafs struck for seven runs in the second inning and cruised to the win.

(May 27)   At Hamiota, the Red Sox grabbed a 9-1 lead after three innings and coasted to an 11-6 victory over Souris Cardinals. Al Robertson and Ellis Woods led the winners each with a double and two singles. Doug Armour had three safeties for the Cardinals.

(May 27)  Riverside had a successful season opener ripping Virden 12-4 Friday. Veteran Barry Moffatt led the winners with a triple and double. Mark Fisher racked up the pitching win with relief from Ross Kinsley and Ron Cruickshank.

(May 29)   Brandon Cloverleafs notched their third straight win Sunday downing the Blues 14-7 at Riverside.  Brandon snapped a 3-3 tie with a run in the fourth then added five in the fifth and were never headed. Bill Chapple continued his torrid hitting streak leading a 15-hit attack with a three-run homer. Brian Hodgson chipped in with a solo homer and two singles. Mike Repin had four hits and Maurice Oakes added three. Stan Furman went five innings for the win.

(May 29)   Hamiota kept pace with Brandon winning their third in a row clobbering the Redbirds 17-2 at Dauphin. A wild first inning decided the game before Dauphin even had a chance to bat. The Red Sox sent 17 batters to the plate in the opening frame scoring 12 times. They got six hits, including a homer by Mel Smith and a triple by Bob Brooks. Three Dauphin hurlers walked six batters in the inning, four of them in a row, eleven in the game. Hamiota added a run in the third, another in the fifth and three in the sixth. Gord Lyall got the win with Lynn Caldwell appearing in relief. Brooks, Russ Poole, Ellis Woods and Caldwell each had three hits.

(May 29)    Terry Moore tossed a shutout giving up just six hits as St. Lazare whipped Virden 10-0. Moore fanned 11 and walked four.  He aided his own cause with a two-run homer.

(May 31)   Garth Sararas had a huge day with a home run, triple, double and three singles to pace a 20-hit attack as St. Lazare clobbered the Red Sox 15-5 at Hamiota. St. Lazare pushed across five runs in the top of the first inning and romped to the easy victory. Ron Falloon had a pair of doubles and two singles for the Athletics while Roy McLaughlin added three safeties. Mickey Torres scattered nine hits, with ten strikeouts, for the win.

(May 31)   At Virden, the teams played scoreless ball for six innings before Souris scored three in the seventh on an error, two walks, a hit batsman and a single for a 3-0 victory over the Oilers. Al Adolph allowed six hits in posting the shutout. Jack Magee took the loss giving up just four hits.

(June 2)   Bob Thompson drove in five runs with a double, triple and three-run homer and Maurice Oakes cracked a triple and three singles as Brandon launched a 15-hit attack to crush Dauphin 17-7 Thursday at Kinsmen Stadium. Cloverleafs scored four times in the first and added four in the second to coast to the win, leading 17-2 until the Redbirds broke loose for five in the ninth. Dauphin made nine errors.

(June 3)   Souris Cardinals climbed out of an early 5-1 hole to edge Hamiota Red Sox 15-14 in an error-filled game at Souris. The clubs combined for 12 errors, eight by the Sox. Each team had just nine hits. Doug Armour led the winners with three safeties. Souris won it with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

(June 3)  Riverside Blues survived a six-run, sixth inning by Virden to escape with a 9-8 victory Friday at Riverside.  Ross Kinsley poked a three-run homer for the Blues who were out-hit 13 to 9.

(June 5)  Trailing 4-1, Hamiota scored one in the seventh and three in the eighth to slip by St. Lazare 5-4 Sunday. Leighton Kachur went the distance with an eight-hitter for the win. Bill Fairbairn of St. Lazare had the only home run.

(June 5)   Riverside moved into second place in the league standings with a 5-2 win Sunday over Dauphin. Barry Diller picked up the win in relief of starter Ed Evans. Wes Rathwell and Cliff Seafoot each had a double and single for the winners.

(June 5)   Souris pounded out 16 hits in a 22-7 romp over Virden Oilers. Dick Limke led the winners with a four-bagger and two singles. Brian Moffatt had a double and two singles and Bob Payne added three singles.

(June 6)  Souris Cardinals overcame an early 3-0 deficit to crank out 16 hits in a 10-5 victory over Brandon, the first loss of the season for the Cloverleafs. In his first start of the season, Dick Limke, the 1965 strikeout king, went the route for the win, holding the Cloverleafs to six hits. He walked two and fanned ten. Bill Carpenter smacked a towering home run for the winners. Limke had a three-bagger.

(June 6)  Dauphin Redbirds ended their four-game losing streak Monday, but still didn't come away with a win. The Birds battled Hamiota to a 7-7 tie. After building up a 5-1 lead, Dauphin fell behind as the Red Sox exploded for five in the seventh. Each team scored in the eighth and Dauphin notched one in the ninth for the draw. Gerry Shumanski led Dauphin with a triple and single. Mel Smith had three singles for Hamiota. The game is to be completed at a later date.

(June 7)   Veteran first sacker Tom Town lashed a pair of doubles and two singles Tuesday to lead Brandon to a 7-3 victory over Virden Oilers. It was the Cloverleafs fifth win in six starts. Ron Powers made his first start and went eight innings for the win. He scattered ten hits and struck out six. Catcher Garry Greaves poked a double and two singles for Brandon while Virden catcher Ralph Gardiner rapped three singles for the Oilers.

(June 8)   St. Lazare exploded for five runs in the tenth inning Wednesday to come away with an 8-3 win over Souris Cardinals.  Mickey Torres was a standout for the winners, taking over mound work in the second inning and going the rest of the way allowing just two hits. He racked up 15 strikeouts, but walked seven. Torres helped his own cause with a double and solo homer. The four-bagger came in the ninth to give the Athletics a 3-2 lead. Bill Carpenter, who pitched into the tenth took the loss.

(June 9)  Gord Lyall of Hamiota has grabbed the early lead in the batting race in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League racking up a .455 average to edge out Maurice Oakes of Brandon, at .440. Bob Brooks, also of Hamiota, is third, hitting at a .429 clip. 

(June 9)  Brandon Cloverleafs were handed two gift runs in the eighth inning Thursday night and walked away with a 3-1 victory over Riverside. The Blues made four errors in the inning to break up a tense mound duel between a pair of southpaws, Jack Denbow for the Blues and Brian Hodgson for Brandon.  Denbow took the loss with a four-hitter. Hodgson yielded five hits in gaining credit for the win.

(June 12)   Brandon stretched its lead atop the standings to 2 1/2 games Sunday with a 7-4 win over the Cardinals and Dick Limke at Souris.  Limke, last year's strikeout king, fanned 19 and walked just two but was hurt by three home runs.  Tommy Town and Garry Greaves each poked a homer and single. Bob Wilson had the other four-bagger for the winners. Stan Furman tossed an eight-hitter to post the win. He racked up 12 strikeouts but walked nine.

(June 12)   Riverside and St. Lazare split a twin-bill. Athletics took the opener 6-1 behind the sterling hurling of Barry Diller who held the Athletics to six hits. Diller also helped the offense with a two-run double.

In the second game, St. Lazare scored five runs in the fourth inning in a 9-1 romp over the Blues. Mickey Torres tossed a five-hitter for the win.

(June 12)   Virden rallied with five late runs to take an 11-8 decision in the opening game of a double-header at Dauphin.  A five-run, fourth inning carried Dauphin to an 8-2 triumph in the second game. In the opener, the Oilers trailed 8-6 before posting three in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the win. Ted Bridgett survived 13 hits to go all the way for the win. Virden pounded out 16 hits against three Dauphin hurlers. Catcher Mark Wilton led the offensive with five singles. Bruce Fowler rapped a double and triple while Jack Day added three hits. Neil Geekie socked a double and three singles for the Redbirds. Oscar Walker clubbed a homer.

Darryl Haas held Virden to five hits in the six-inning second game to gain the pitching win. Dauphin got a pair in the first inning thanks to four walks, added one in the second then exploded for five in the fourth. (June 14)   Hamiota Red Sox had an easy time against Virden scoring seven times in the second inning and coasting to a 13-8 victory at Hamiota. Virden out-hit the Red Sox 14 to 12 with Henry Palk lashing a double and three singles and Ian Whyte collected a double and a pair of singles. Lynn Caldwell rapped a double and single to lead the winners. Gord Lyall went five innings to pick up the win.

(June 15)   Brandon won its eighth game in nine starts downing the Athletics 7-1 Wednesday at St. Lazare. Lefty Brian Hodgson fashioned a three-hitter for the win.  Cloverleafs collected eight hits of Athletics' ace Mickey Torres. Cloverleafs broke open a tight game with four runs in the sixth inning.

(June 16)  Again, Bob Wilson destroyed the Dauphin Redbirds. Wilson, who drove in six runs in Brandon's league opener at Dauphin, slammed a homer, double and single Thursday to knock in three runs as the Cloverleafs won their ninth game in ten starts, 6-2. It was Wilson's fourth homer of the season, a league high. Bob Thompson, a hard-throwing right-hander fired a four-hitter for the win. He struck out eight and walked a pair.

(June 16)   In a dramatic end to a thrilling contest, Hamiota got a run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-base error and a single to notch a 1-0 victory over Riverside Blues.  With two out and no one on base, Dallas Smith hit a high fly ball to centre field. Garth Seafoot dropped the ball as Smith galloped into second base. Mel Smith then cracked a single to bring in the game's only run.  Leighton Kachur got the shutout with a three-hitter while Barry Diller took the tough luck loss allowing just seven hits.  In an unusual occurrence, the game produced just one strikeout. Kachur fanned the one and walked three. Diller had three walks and no strikeouts.

(June 17)   Garth Seafoot slammed a homer and two singles Friday to pace Riverside to a 7-3 win over Souris. Jack Denbow went eight innings to post his second win of the season. He gave up seven hits, walked one and whiffed five. Lorne Lilley finished up. The Blues collected 12 hits off loser Dick Limke.

(June 17)   Already leading 7-2, Hamiota Red Sox ran wild in the sixth inning for 12 runs in a 19-5 romp over Virden Oilers. Winning pitcher Mel Smith led the Sox with three hits, a two-run homer and two singles. Lynn Caldwell drove in four runs with a pair of singles. Red Sox pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of six Virden errors.

(June 19)  At Souris Sunday, Riverside jumped into an early 3-0 lead and never looked back taking a 9-3 decision rapping 11 hits off a pair of Cardinals' hurlers. Mark Fisher went six innings for the pitching win. Catcher Cliff Seafoot had a big day with a triple, double and two singles to pace the winners. Bob Payne cracked a homer and double for the Cardinals.

(June 19)   In a wild one at St. Lazare, Dauphin scored six runs in the top of the first inning but ended up losing 11-10 as the Athletics got the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Garth Sararas had another big day with five hits, a double and four singles. Mickey Torres added a pair of two-baggers. Gerry Shumanski was best for Dauphin with a double and two singles. The teams combined for 24 hits, 11 walks and 8 errors.

(June 20)   Hamiota edged Brandon 6-5 in ten innings Monday to move within one game of the league-leading Cloverleafs.  Brandon, behind 4-3 after eight innings, scored a pair in the ninth for a 5-4 lead. Gerry MacKay walked with two out and Tom Town and Bob Wilson filled the sacks with singles. Maurice Oakes then singled to drive in two runners.  Red Sox came back in their half of the ninth with a run to send the game to the extra frame. Ellis Woods rapped a single to plate Gord Lyall who had singled and advanced on an error. Lyall was also the hero of the tenth. After the Sox filled the sacks on a walk, single and error, Lyall laid down a perfect bunt to bring in the winning marker. Leighton Kachur went the distance for the win. He scattered 12 hits and walked five. Brian Hodgson took the loss allowing 11 hits and eight walks.  Oakes has four hits for the Cloverleafs.

(June 20)   Riverside Blues rapped 17 hits, including three home runs, in a come-from-behind win over Dauphin Redbirds.  Trailing 9-6, the Blues erupted for six runs in the seventh inning for the win. Barry Moffatt cracked a homer and a triple for the winners while Wes Rathwell had a two-run shot and Ross Kinsley hit a solo circuit clout. (June 22)   Dick Limke twirled a two-hitter Wednesday as Souris downed Dauphin 9-3 in a seven inning contest at Dauphin.  Limke had a no-hitter into the sixth before the Redbirds got their first safety. He fanned 11 and walked two. Doug Armour led a 12-hit attack for the Cardinals with four singles. Souris wrapped up the contest with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning.

(June 23)  For the second time this week, Gord Lyall drove in the winning run in extra innings to provide another "W" for the Hamiota Red Sox. Lyall singled in the 14th inning to drive in Russ Poole with the deciding counter in a 6-5 triumph over the Cloverleafs. The victory moved the Sox into first place, a few percentage points ahead of Brandon. A spectacular catch in left field by Mel Smith saved the day for the Sox in the bottom of the 13th at Kinsmen Stadium.  With one out, Tom Town doubled and Bob Wilson received an intentional walk.  Bob Thompson lined one to left but Smith made the catch just inches off the ground and quickly fired the ball back to second base to double up Town who had made the turn at third. Glennis Scott and Thompson both went the distance. Scott allowed nine hits and walked three. Thompson scattered 11 hits and walked six. Scott had six strikeouts, Thompson racked up 14. Scott aided his own cause with a double and three singles.  Wilson had a double and triple for Brandon.

(June 23)   St. Lazare moved to within two games of the league lead Thursday night as they drubbed the Virden Oilers 11-6. Left-hander Russ Reid picked up the win in relief of starter Gary Keating. Garth Sararas continued his hot hitting streak with three singles.

(June 28)  Jack Denbow, Hamiota's top hurler last season, came back to haunt his former teammates as he stopped the Red Sox on just six hits as Riverside romped to a 6-1 victory. The little southpaw fanned six and walked only one. He also starred at the plate with a homer over the centre field fence in the seventh inning. Garth Seafoot had a two-run homer and a single. Losing pitcher Leighton Kachur accounted for the only Hamiota run with a home run in the fifth inning.

(June 28)   In an exhibition game at Kinsmen Stadium, Brandon's Gary Toews and Ron Powers combined on a no-hitter as the Cloverleafs crushed Rolla, North Dakota, 14-0.  In a previous meeting, Cloverleafs won 7-3.  Toews went five innings and allowed just one base runner when he hit Terry Anderson with a pitch. Powers issued one free pass. Each had three strikeouts. There was one other base runner as Wes Juntunen reached as the ball got away from catcher Mort Wright on a strikeout. Brandon put the game out of reach early with 12 runs in the first three innings. Garry Greaves had three hits to lead the Cloverleafs.

(June 30)  Brandon's Tommy Town has taken over the lead in the batting race at the half-way point in the Manitoba Senior League schedule. Town has a .44 mark in 36 at bats, ahead of Gord Lyall of Hamiota who sports a .417 average. Seafoot of Riverside and Maurice Oakes of Brandon are tied for third with even .400 marks and Garth Sararas of St. Lazare is right behind at .389.  Brian Hodgson of the Cloverleafs and Mickey Torres of St. Lazare lead in pitching wins, each with four. Bob Wilson of Brandon is tops in home runs, 4, and runs batted in, 17.

(July 4)   Hamiota Red Sox topped Dauphin Redbirds 8-6 Monday in the completion of an earlier game halted because of rain. Sox plated five runs in the first inning and cruised to the win. Gord Lyall went five innings to pick up the mound decision.

(July 5)   Stan Furman had a no-hitter into the ninth inning but had to settle for a two-hit effort as Brandon Cloverleafs clobbered Virden Oilers 15-1 Tuesday at Virden. In the ninth, Furman walked the first two batters and then Ian Whyte smacked a clean single through the hole at short to score Jack Day with the lone run for the Oilers. Furman racked up 18 strikeouts and walked six. Bob Thompson led a 16-hit attack for the Cloverleafs with a single, double and two-run homer. He scored four times. Maurice Oakes had four singles and knocked in three.

(July 6)   Behind Russ Reid's five-hit pitching, the St. Lazare Athletics edged Virden Oilers 5-4 Wednesday to move into a third place tie in the league standings with the Souris Cardinals. Reid was in considerable trouble having issued nine walks, but managed to go the distance.

(July 8)   The league-leaders both won Friday to remain deadlocked atop the standings. Brandon scored five times in the first inning and coasted to a 6-0 shutout over Souris as Bob Thompson fired a seven-hitter and whiffed seven. Dick Limke, also with a seven-hit performance, took the loss. He had 11 strikeouts and walked one.

(July 8)   Glennis Scott twirled a seven-hitter in leading Hamiota to a 9-2 win over St. Lazare. Red Sox scored in just two innings, three in the second and six in the sixth. They had 12 hits off Mickey Torres.

(July 10)   Playing at Gilbert Plains, Dauphin Redbirds finally escaped the cellar in the Manitoba Senior League downing Souris 8-2 to move a half-game ahead of Virden Oilers.  Dauphin scored four in the fourth inning and cruised to the triumph behind a six-hitter by Bob Kutzan. He fanned six and walked three.  Gerry Shumanski and Don Smith each had a triple and single for the Redbirds.

(July 10)   At Riverside, the Blues put on a hitting clinic with 20 hits in a 23-6 shellacking of the Oilers who took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Blues tied it with four in the bottom of the first and went ahead with two in the third before unleashing a 10-run assault in the fourth. Garth Seafoot pounded out five hits and knocked in six. He had a three-run homer in the fourth. Ross Kinsley added a two-run homer and three singles. Murray Richardson provided the big blow for Virden, a two-run homer in the seventh. Mark Fisher, who relieved started Jack Denbow in the first inning worked until the eighth to pick up the win.

(July 11)   Hamiota Red Sox dumped Brandon 7-3 Monday night at Kinsmen Stadium to take over first place in the Manitoba Senior League a game up on the Cloverleafs. Sox scored three times in the third inning and never looked back. Rookie Leighton Kachur went the route scattering eight hits for the pitching victory. Hamiota punched out ten hits with veteran Al Robertson leading the way with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.

(July 12)  Doug Fowler was the main man for Virden Oilers Tuesday going the distance on the mound in a 6-5 victory and driving in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Riverside had taken a 5-1 lead with four runs in the fourth inning but the Oilers battled back with three in the fifth on Mark Wilton's bases-clearing double and singletons in the seventh and eighth for the victory.

(July 13)   Brandon spotted the Virden Oilers a four run advantage then came storming back in the fifth inning to send 11 man to the plate to plate seven runs to dump the Oilers 7-4 Wednesday at Kinsmen Stadium.  Bob Thomson limited Virden to three hits in going all the way on the mound for the Cloverleafs. Thompson helped out on the offense with a double and triple. Gerry MacKay rapped an inside-the-park homer and a single. Maurice Oakes added a triple and single. A pair of errors helped the Oilers to three runs in the first inning.

(July 13)   A quick start, three runs in the first and four in the second, launched Souris to an easy 9-5 victory over St. Lazare Athletics Wednesday. Bill Carpenter pitched into the seventh inning to pick up the win. He allowed seven hits and walked four.

(July 15)   Riverside Blues fell behind 5-1 in the second inning but scored in each of the last six innings to shade Hamiota 10-9 Friday. Blues got the winning run in the ninth as Mark Fisher reached on an two-base error and scored on two infield outs. Ed Evans, who relieved starter Jack Denbow in the second, went the rest of the way for the win. Evans was the game's hitting star with a homer, double and single. The game produced 14 errors, nine by Hamiota.

(July 17)   Mickey Torres heaved a five-hitter Sunday at St. Lazare as the Athletics handed Brandon a 6-3 defeat and knocked the Cloverleafs out of a tie for first place.  After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Athletics fell behind 3-2 after five innings but rallied for two in the seventh and another two in the eighth for the win.  Garth Sararas produced three hits for the winners who had 12 hits against a pair of Brandon hurlers.

(July 17)  Dick Limke fired a two-hitter as Souris erupted for nine runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 victory at Riverside. Doug Armour paced a 13-hit attack for the Cardinals with a three-run triple, double and single. Three Souris errors helped the Blues to their only run.

(July 17)   Dauphin and the Oilers divided a double-header at Virden. The home squad delighted the local funs with a five run rally in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game 12-11. Redbirds took the second game 19-8.  Jack Day led a 14-hit attack knocking in three runs with two doubles and a single. Doug Fowler added a double and two singles. Bob Zarn reached base four times with a single and three walks. John Lesyshen slugged a two-run homer and two singles for Dauphin and Rollie Secord banged out three hits. 14-year-old Bob Buchy had a single and four walks.

Dauphin pounded out 19 hits in the second game to post a 19-8 victory. The Redbirds erupted for six runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth for the win. Bob Buchy, on base five times in the first game, had four hits and knocked in five runs in the second contest. Gerry Shumanski had a home run and single. John Lesyshen slugged a two-run homer and double.  Virden had three home runs, by Henry Palk, Doug Fowler and Mark Wilton. Bob Kutzan who took the loss in the first game picked up the win in the nightcap pitching into the seventh inning. He fanned 11.

(July 18)   Souris Cardinals rapped 21 hits Monday to crush Dauphin 14-7. Jim Neilson carried the offense with five hits, a two-run homer, a double and three singles while Don Hodgson banged out two doubles and a pair of singles. Dick Limke cracked three two-baggers. Winning pitcher Bill Carpenter rapped a two-run homer. He went six innings for the win.

(July 19)    League-leading Hamiota Red Sox placed seven players on the league's All-Star teams for the All-Star Classic July 24th. The Sox had three on the first squad and four on the second. Brandon placed six men, four on the first team and two on the second.  There were two unanimous selections, made by the team coaches, Tommy Town of the Cloverleafs, a first-team all-star for six straight seasons, and Garth Seafoot of Riverside. Town, who will handle first base, is hitting .444. Seafoot sits at .403.  The Blues Cliff Seafoot, just one vote away from unanimous, won first team catching honours. Hamiota's Al Robertson was selected to the second base position. Gerry Shumanski of Dauphin is the first team shortstop and Lynn Caldwell of Hamiota will start at third base. The Cloverleafs placed two outfielders on the first dream team. Bob Wilson and Maurice Oakes, who tied with Mel Smith for the last slot in the outer pasture. Stan Furman of Brandon, with a 3-0 record, heads the pitching staff joined by Dick Limke of Souris and Mickey Torres of St. Lazare.

(July 19)   St. Lazare jumped into a big lead with five runs in the first and three in the second and held on to down Hamiota 10-8. Mickey Torres powered the Athletics 12-hit attack with a three-run homer and a double. Ron Falloon added three singles.  Russ Reid went five innings for the pitching win.

(July 19)  Maurice Oakes of Brandon is the leading hitter in the Manitoba Senior League with a .424 average, five points up on Gord Lyall of Hamiota. Garth Seafoot of Riverside is third, at .403.  Cliff Seafoot of Riverside sits at .373 and Mel Smith of Hamiota .343. Starter Mickey Torres of St. Lazare has the most wins, six, while Gord Lyall of Hamiota sports the best percentage with four wins and no losses. Torres leads in innings pitched, 76, and strikeouts, 79. Bill Carpenter of Souris has cracked five homers for the league lead.

(July 20)  Hamiota Red Sox stunned Brandon with six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Cloverleafs 10-9.  Trailing 9-4, Ellis Woods led off the ninth with a single and Denny Smith followed with another. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice and Buck Matheson and Rick Robinson hit back-to-back singles to score a pair. With reliever Stan Furman summoned in to replaced starter Ron Toews, Gord Lyall drew a walk to fill the bases and Mel Smith's long fly ball brought in Matheson. Lynn Caldwell promptly smacked a two-bagger to bring in two and tie the score and Dallas Smith, the ninth batter of the inning, singled for the winning run. Lynn Caldwell picked up the win with 2/3s of an inning of relief.

(July 20)   Dick Limke put on a spectacular mound performance Wednesday holding Virden to one hit in a 3-0 shutout of the Oilers.  The Souris right-hander gave up one walk and racked up 13 strikeouts. The Cardinals had just six hits off Dennis George. The lone hit off Limke was a clean single by Ron Goethe.

(July 21)   In a superb outing, Bob Thompson hurled Brandon to within a half-game of the lead in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League with a two-hitter as the Cloverleafs blanked St. Lazare 6-0. The right-hander walked three and whiffed seven. Brandon rapped 11 hits off Athletics' ace Mickey Torres. Thompson helped the offense with a single and a double. Tommy Town slammed a homer in the seventh inning.

(July 22)    Hamiota Red Sox pounded four Riverside hurlers for 17 hits Friday, scoring eight times in the fifth inning, in a 13-9 victory over the Blues.  Sox had a 13-2 lead before Riverside rallied for two in the seventh and five in the eighth.  Al Robertson led the winners with two doubles and a single. Lynn Caldwell added a double and two singles. For Riverside, Wes Rathwell collected four hits, including a two-bagger.

(July 22)  Souris scored a pair in the ninth to down Virden 5-3. Cec Dawley and  Dick Limke combined on a four-hitter for the Cardinals. Limke, who relieved in the seventh, struck out seven, and was credited with the win.

(July 24)   At the annual MSBL All-Star game the second squad was no match for the First Team All-Stars as Hamiota's Al Robertson led the First Stars to an 11-2 victory. The slick fielding second baseman had a flawless day in the field and was a terror at the dish with a two-run homer, double, single and two walks. The Second Stars got off to a good start with two runs in the first inning, but that's all they would get as Dick Limke, Stan Furman and Mickey Torres blanked them the rest of the way. Furman and Torres pitched no-hit ball over the last six innings.

(July 25)  A day after a superb no-hit relief appearance at the All-Star game, Stan Furman hurled a seven-hit shutout as Brandon topped Virden 3-0 Monday at Kinsmen Stadium.  Furman did, however, have to negotiate trouble spots as he walked six. He gave up three walks in the first inning. Cloverleafs got the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. They got an insurance run on an error in the fourth and Garry Greaves singled in a run in the sixth.

(July 26)  The last place Virden Oilers pulled an upset Tuesday, defeating top ranked Hamiota Red Sox 6-2 to drop the Sox into a first place tie with Brandon.  Veteran Ted Bridgett hurled a four-hitter for the win as the Oilers rapped 11 hits off loser Leighton Kachur. Doug Fowler had three of the hits, all singles, as were all of the 15 hits in the game.

(July 27)   Brandon Cloverleafs regained sole possession of first place in the league standings after downing the Dauphin Redbirds 6-1 Wednesday. Leafs have a half-game lead over Hamiota. Bob Thompson fired a four-hitter for the win. He racked up seven strikeouts with just one free pass. Third baseman Gerry MacKay led the winners cracking out four singles. First sacker Tom Towns had a double and two singles.

(July 27)   In a game which produced 27 strikeouts, St. Lazare slipped by Souris 4-3 at St. Lazare. In the pitchers' duel, Mickey Torres got the win with a three-hitter and 14 strikeouts besting Dick Limke who gave up five hits and fanned 13. Torres walked three, Limke issued six walks. Athletics got the win with two runs in the eighth inning, one scoring on a homer by catcher Ron Baron. Limke had belted a homer in the top of the eighth for the Cardinals.

(July 28)   Brandon Cloverleafs extended their lead atop the standings to a full game over Hamiota Thursday with a 5-1 victory over Souris Cardinals. Brandon scored a pair in the first inning and they proved enough for the triumph. Ron Toews fired a four-hitter, with ten strikeouts, for the win. Bill Carpenter took the loss giving up eight hits. He fanned eight and walked five. Toews walked just one.

(August 2)   Dick Limke and the Souris Cardinals handed Hamiota a setback sending them a game-and-a-half back of Brandon following a 7-5 win over the Red Sox Tuesday night. Dick Limke limited the Sox to six hits and fanned nine in going the distance for the win. A four-run fourth inning was key to the victory.

(August 2)   Dauphin Redbirds plated singletons in four different innings and held on to shade St. Lazare 4-3. Bob Kutzan pitched shutout ball for six innings before tiring in the late frames. (August 3)   With a 9-6 victory over Riverside Thursday, Brandon needs just one more win to clinch first place in the Manitoba Senior League. Cloverleafs received a show-stopping relief appearance from Stan Furman who went four innings and fanned nine. In a tense ninth inning, Furman gave up a single to Cliff Seafoot and walked Gene Cory. After two strikeouts he walked another to load the bases but then fanned Mark Fisher to end the game. Tom Town led a 12 hit attack blasting a triple and two singles. Bob Thompson gave up all six Blues' runs but received credit for the win.

(August 4)   Souris Cardinals shaded Hamiota 4-3 Friday to wipe out the hopes of the defending champion Red Sox for a repeat of their 1965 pennant winning effort. Down 3-1 in the eighth, the Cardinals rallied for three runs for the triumph. Hamiota out-hit Souris 7 to 5, but committed five errors. Dick Limke, who gave up a homer to Mel Smith on his first pitch of the game, went the distance for the win. He racked up 13 strikeouts.

(August 5)   The cellar-dwelling Virden Oilers wrapped up their season on a winning note Friday handing Hamiota its fourth straight defeat, 5-4.  Oilers plated a pair in the bottom of the seventh for the victory. Ted Bridgett picked up the mound win in relief of starter Denis George. Al Robertson of the Sox had the only home run.

(August 5)  The league announced Friday that eight candidates are in the running for the league's Most Valuable Player award. The players were nominated by the teams and the winner is to be announced next week. Team coaches will conduct a vote but cannot choose their own player.  In the running for the Gordon Smith Memorial trophy are Don Smith of Dauphin, Mickey Torres of St. Lazare, Gordie Lyall, Hamiota, Mark Wilton of Virden, Mark Fisher of Riverside, Dick Limke of Souris and Tommy Town of Brandon.  Limke won the award last year.

(August 8)   Riverside Blues played eight innings Monday but came away with two victories over the Dauphin Redbirds. The Blues exploded for five runs in the first inning and added two in the second to top the Redbirds 9-5. The first inning, 5-1 for Riverside, was played as the completion of an earlier tie, thus the second win for the Blues. Mark Fisher was credited with wins in both games. Dauphin had eight hits to just six for the Blues but booted the ball six times.

(August 9)   In a preview of their upcoming playoff series, Brandon whipped the Blues 9-3 at Riverside scoring in just two innings. Cloverleafs plated three in the fifth and brought in six runs in the sixth. Tommy Town, who appears to have locked up the batting championship, drove in five runs with a pair of homers and a single. Bob Thompson went seven innings for the win, his 8th against just one loss. Brandon and Riverside begin a best-of-seven semi-final playoff Thursday at Kinsmen Stadium.

(August 10)  In the final game of the regular schedule, Dauphin Redbirds escaped the league basement with an 8-7 victory over the slumping Hamiota Red Sox. The Birds broke out of the gate with all eight runs in the first three innings and held on for the win which forced a sudden-death playoff between Hamiota and Souris for second place. Pat Fitzpatrick took over mound duties in the third inning and went the rest of the way for the victory while giving up five runs on six hits and four walks.

(August 11)   Garth Seafoot, who didn't start a game during the regular schedule, handcuffed Brandon on just five hits Thursday at Kinsmen Stadium as Riverside upset the Cloverleafs 3-1 in the opening game of their best-of-seven semi-final series.  Seafoot said a sore shoulder kept him off the mound during the regular season.  The right-hander fanned six and created potential trouble with five walks. In the ninth, Seafoot loaded the bases on walks with two out but fanned Maurice Oakes to end the game. Brandon broke a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth when Bob Wilson walked, stole second and romped home on Bill Chapple's single to right.  Riverside packed all their scoring into the eighth inning. Barry Diller worked Brian Hodgson for a walk and tied the game on Garth Seafoot's double. They got the winner when Seafoot escaped a rundown when a throw home was wide of the plate. They added an insurance run on Barry Moffatt's squeeze bunt. Hodgson took the loss going seven innings allowing just three hits, but six walks.

(August 11)   Dick Limke of Souris Cardinals was named the league's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year. The standout starting pitcher received 30 of 36 possible votes. Mickey Torres of St. Lazare was second.

(August 12)   Dick Limke, chosen as the league's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, fired a one-hitter Friday as Souris defeated Hamiota 4-1 in a sudden-death playoff to break a tie for second place in the league standings. The right-hander walked one and fanned eight in handling the Red Sox their sixth straight loss. Bobby Payne led the winners with a double and two singles while Limke chipped in with a pair of singles. Bill Carpenter had a double and single. The win was Limke's ninth of the season giving him the league's top pitching award with one more mound triumph than Brandon's Bob Thompson.

(August 13)  Brandon first baseman Tommy Town and right-handed pitcher Dick Limke of the Souris Cardinals were the individual stars of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League in 1966.  Limke was named the league's Most Valuable Player, winning the award for the second straight season, and topping the hurlers with nine wins.

Town compiled a .426 mark to take the batting crown. He tied Bill Carpenter of Souris for the lead in home runs, each with 5. Bob Thompson of Brandon had the best winning percentage, .889, based on his 8-1 record.

(August 14)   Down a game in the semi-final series, Brandon brought out the heavy lumber Sunday to pound four Riverside hurlers for 19 hits, including five home runs, in an 18-8 victory. Cloverleafs took a 7-2 lead after three innings and didn't let up. Catcher Garry Greaves led the hit parade driving in four runs with two home runs, a double and single. Bob Thompson smacked a homer and single, batting champion Tommy Town clouted a homer and two singles and Bob Wilson added a four-bagger and a single.  Mike Repin, a .195 hitter during the regular season, collected a double and two singles and Gerry MacKay stroked three singles. Garth Seafoot cracked two home runs and a single for the Blues. Relief pitcher Lorne Lilley also had a circuit clout.

(August 14)   At Souris, the Hamiota Red Sox pushed across four runs in the final three innings to complete a come-from-behind, 6-3, triumph. Gord Lyall went the distance to chalk up the mound victory. He allowed nine hits and a pair of walks, fanning just two. Losing pitcher Bill Carpenter boomed a two-run homer for the Cardinals.

(August 16)   Centre fielder Bob Wilson drove in four runs with a circuit clout and two singles as Brandon dumped Riverside 8-4 to take a 2 to 1 game lead in their semi-final series.  Bob Thompson scattered seven hits in going the route for the win. Thompson aided the attack with a single and two doubles. Garth Seafoot continued his torrid hit streak with a pair of doubles for the Blues.

(August 17)  Hamiota utility man Russ Poole, who had already scored once, singled and scored the winning run in the seventh inning as the Red Sox beat Souris 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their semi-final series. Gord Lyall rapped a sharp single to bring in Poole with the winner. Leighton Kachur tossed a six-hitter for the win besting league MVP Dick Limke who also yielded six hits.

(August 18)   Brandon Cloverleafs again used the long ball to take a 3-1 game lead in their semi-final series defeating Riverside Blues 4-2. Garry Greaves swatted a two-run homer in the first inning as the Leafs took a 3-0 lead and Bob Wilson blasted one in the fifth. It was the third homer for each in the series. Stan Furman held the Blues to just four hits, one a home run by Cliff Seafoot.

(August 19)  Riverside Blues punched out 12 hits in a come-from-behind 9-5 victory over Brandon to stave off elimination in the semi-final set. Cloverleafs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Blues rallied for two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take the lead for good. 17-year-old Mark Fisher made his third appearance of the series to save the game for Jack Denbow. Fisher relieved in the fifth and held off the Leafs, allowing four hits and racking up eight strikeouts.

(August 19)   In a wild finish, Souris Cardinals scored six times in the seventh and final inning to salvage a 9-9 tie with Hamiota Friday. The game was called because of darkness. Souris had 16 hits to just four for Hamiota but made six errors to none for the Red Sox. Al Adolph and Brian Moffatt each collected three hits to lead the Cardinals. Jim Neilson had the big blow of the game, a two-run homer in the final stanza that tied the game.

(August 23)   Bob Wilson's three-run homer in the seventh broke open a one-run game to lead Brandon into the league final series with a 9-5 victory over Riverside to take the semi-final four games to two. Cloverleafs jumped into a big lead with three runs in the first inning and three more in the second. But, the Blues erupted for five in the third to trail 6-5. It stayed that way until Wilson's game-clinching blast. Bob Thompson twirled a six-hitter for the win. Maurice Oakes had three hits for the Cloverleafs.

(August 23)   Russ Poole scored on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth to hand Hamiota a 6-5 win over Souris and a 3-0 game lead in their semi-final series. Poole had reached on an error and advanced on a double by Mel Smith before Gord Lyall laid down a perfect bunt to end the game.  Smith led the winners with two doubles and a single. Leighton Kachur got the win again besting Dick Limke.

(August 24)   Dick Limke sparked a five-run eighth inning rally for Souris with a three-run homer and the Cardinals held off a ninth inning uprising by Hamiota to gain their first win in the semi-final series, 10-6. Bob Payne socked a two-run homer for the Cards in the fifth. Don Hunter survived 12 hits and four walks to go all the way for the win. Al Robertson and Gord Lyall each had three hits for the Red Sox.

(August 26)   Souris Cardinals rapped 14 hits Friday to upset Hamiota 7-5 to extend the semi-final series to a sixth game. Dick Limke limited the Sox to four hits in going the route for the win. He walked one and fanned six. Eight Souris errors allowed the Red Sox to stay in the game. Doug Armour and Jim Neilson each had three hits for the winners.

(August 28)   The Souris Cardinals, once down 3 games to none in their best-of-seven semi-final series drew even with Hamiota Sunday notching an 8-6 victory. After the Red Sox had broken a 4-4 tie with a pair in the top of the eighth inning, Souris rallied with four runs in the bottom of the frame to cop the victory. Cards got home runs from Bill Carpenter and Jim Neilson while catcher Bob Payne cracked three singles. Al Robertson slugged a homer and two doubles for the Red Sox.

(August 30)   it took the Hamiota Red Sox eight games but they finally won a berth in the league final downing Souris 8-3 in the deciding game of their semi-final series. Red Sox won the set 4-3 with one game tied. Leighton Kachur chalked up this third mound win of the series with a four-hitter. Souris took the lead with two runs in the top of the second when the Sox made three of their five errors. But Hamiota quickly rebounded with two in their half of the stanza then two more in the third as they romped to the win with 11 hits.

(September 1)    In the opening game of the Manitoba Senior League final, Brandon scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Hamiota 6-5. Cloverleafs had jumped into an early 4-1 lead but then fell behind as Hamiota erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Veteran Gerry MacKay was the hero of the night for the home squad driving in the tying run and notching the winner with a steal of home. The Red Sox took the lead in their half of the sixth as Al Robertson singled to drive in a run and Lynn Caldwell brought in one with a towering fly ball.  Denny Smith singled in another and Ellis Woods scored when the throw home got away from catcher Mort Wright. Wright started the Cloverleafs rally with a pop up in front of the mound which fell in for a single as first baseman Buck Matheson and third baseman Lynn Caldwell couldn't decide who would take it. MacKay sent a long fly to right field which Rick Robinson lost in the lights and then dropped allowing Wright to come home with the tying run  and MacKay to scoot to second. Maurice Oakes then blooped a lazy fly ball into short right field but Russ Poole couldn't find it in the lights and the ball dropped in as MacKay went to third.  As Gord Lyall. the Red Sox hurler went over to first to talk to Matheson and Poole, MacKay broke for home and slid around the tag to plate the winner. Bob Thompson held the Sox to seven hits in posting the complete game victory.

(September 7)   In a high scoring and thrilling league final contest, Brandon and Hamiota battled to an 11-11 draw in a game called after eight innings because of darkness. Cloverleafs had come from behind with two in the top of the eighth to take an 11-10 lead but the Sox rallied to score in their final at bats for the tie. Al Robertson of Hamiota was the game's top hitter with a two-run homer and a double.

(September 9)   Brandon took a 4-0 lead after three innings and, with outstanding pitching from Ron Toews, held on to top Hamiota 4-1 for a 2-0 game lead in the best-of-seven final series. Toews scattered six hits and made six strikeouts. The game featured sparkling defensive play by Brandon second baseman Jack Borotsik and third baseman and outfielder Gerry MacKayMaurice Oakes gave Brandon a 1-0 lead in the first as he singled, stole second, advanced on a ground out and scampered home on a single by Tommy Town. MacKay started Brandon's three-run uprising in the third with a three-bagger. Warren Veal singled to plate MacKay and Garry Greaves' sac fly brought in a run and Bob Wilson's single scored another. Hamiota's lone marker came in the seventh when Al Robertson tripled and scored on a ground out.

(September 11)   Brandon Cloverleafs moved to within one game of capturing the Manitoba Senior League championship Sunday downing Hamiota Red Sox 10-6 to take a 3-0 game lead in the best-of-seven final.  Trailing the Sox 6-4 going into the ninth, the Cloverleafs exploded for six runs to romp to the win.  With one out in the ninth. Warren Veal launched the rally with a single and Tommy Town reached on an outfield error. Bob Wilson singled to load the bases and Bob Thompson cracked a two-bagger to drive in a pair and tie the game at 6-6. Garry Greaves gave Brandon the lead with a run-scoring single and a fielder's choice added another. Gerry MacKay slammed a single to bring in two more. Brian Hodgson picked up the win with an inning of relief.  Each team made six errors.

(September 15)   Bob Thompson, a key off-season acquisition by the Brandon Cloverleafs, tossed a three-hit shutout and drove in the winning run Thursday as the Leafs whipped Hamiota 6-0 to capture the Manitoba Senior League championship and the Thomas Ryles trophy.  Brandon won the best-of-seven series four games to none with one tie. Thompson allowed just three singles and fanned eight while getting in some trouble with five walks. After five scoreless innings Hamiota threatened in the top of the sixth. Red Sox loaded the bases with none out on a walk and two errors. The big right-hander got a strikeout and then, on a comebacker to the mound, threw home for an out and got another strikeout to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the frame, Brandon scored five times to sink the Sox. Warren Veale got things rolling with a walk and Tommy Town followed with a single. Thompson then won his own game with a single to centre to score both base runners. Brandon had just five hits but capitalized on five Hamiota errors.  16-year-old Jack Borotsik reached base four straight times on two singles, a walk and an error.

MSBL FINALS

(September 18)   Brandon and Transcona split a double-header opening the best-of-five series for the Manitoba Senior Baseball championship.  Cloverleafs took the first game 2-1 with the Atomics stunning Brandon with a 7-4 decision in the second game.  In the first game, Brandon plated it's two runs in the fourth inning and held on for the victory. Bob Wilson knocked in both runs with a long single. Transcona got it's marker in the eighth on a bases-loaded ground out. Stan Furman needed eighth inning relief from Ron Toews to chalk up the win. Furman allowed the run on five hits and a walk. Bob Audette went the distance for Transcona yielding eight hits and four walks.

Brandon held a comfortable 4-0 lead after seven innings in the second game but the visitors exploded for seven runs in the eighth to cart off the 7-4 triumph. Ron Toews was sailing along with a one-hit shutout until Bob Audette and Rick Simcoe sparked the Transcona rally with singles and Barry McFarlane walked to load the bases. Three more singles, a walk, an  error, passed ball and Audette's triple resulted in the seven runs. Barry McFarlane worked eight innings for the pitching win giving up the four runs on six hits and two walks.

(September 24)   Transcona Atomics plated two runs in the first inning and held on to shade Brandon 3-2 Saturday to take a 2-1 game lead in the best-of-five series. Bob Hunter baffled the Cloverleafs on five hits and racked up 14 strikeouts while issuing six free passes. Cam Hurst paced the winners with a double and two singles.

(September 25)   In a thrilling end to the Manitoba Senior Baseball championship, Brandon Cloverleafs notched two, extra-inning victories Sunday to become provincial champions. After a 12-inning, 6-4, triumph in the first game to send the series to a fifth and deciding game, catcher Maurice Oakes slapped a tenth-inning single to right field to score Garry Greaves with the winning run in a 6-5 victory. Greaves had singled and advanced on a walk to Gerry MacKay. Brandon appeared to have the game in hand earlier as they held a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the seventh, but Transcona erupted for four runs to go ahead 5-4. Cloverleafs battled back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to knot the count at 5-5 as Bob Wilson snuck home from third while the Atomics tried to nab Ron Toews in a rundown between first and second. Wilson led the Leafs 10-hit attack with a single and two doubles. Toews got the win with an outstanding relief effort. Norm Rogoski had three of Transcona's eight hits.

Trailing Transcona 4-1 after seven innings, Brandon rallied for three runs in the eighth to knot the score before plating a pair in the 12th frame for the win.  The winning rally started with a walk to Mike Repin and a bunt single by Gerry MacKay.  Repin was awarded third base on an interference call against second baseman Larry Hart who protested too vigorously and was ejected from the game. A walk to Maurice Oakes loaded the bases and Tommy Town lifted a fly ball to right to bring in the tie-breaking run. Bob Wilson followed with a single for the insurance marker. Transcona continued the excitement in the bottom of the 12th getting singles by Terry Moore and Cam Hurst with one out but Ron Toews entered the game in relief and got a double-play to end the game. Atomics out-hit Brandon 14 to 8, but made six errors to just one for the Cloverleafs.

(May 25)    Helped by fielding mishaps by Souris, Rivers Comets jumped out to a 9-0 lead and crushed Souris 16-4 Wednesday. Carl Cunningham scattered nine hits in registering the pitching win. Rick Locke took the loss. Bob Whattam blasted a two-run homer for the Comets and Neil Reeves and Scott Wareham each hit triples. Souris gave up just ten hits, but made six errors.

(May 26)   A scoreless game for four innings, Glenboro scored in each of the remaining frames to trounce Treesbank 11-1 Thursday. Charles Hillhurst, who belted a homer and single, worked seven innings, with nine strikeouts, for the win. Earl Johnson led the winners with a homer, double and single. Walter Hillhurst added a double and two singles

May 29)   Scott Wareham socked two home runs and added two singles to pace a potent Rivers attack as the Comets demolished Treesbank 17-4. Comets pounded out 19 hits, a one three-run homer by Mel Harvey.

(June 1)   Bruce Houston pitched one-hit, shutout ball for five innings to help Rivers pile up another win Wednesday, 5-2 over Oak River. Houston fanned seven and walked one before turning over mound duties to Wayne Kapler. Jerry Pollock took the loss giving up just five hits.

(June 5)   Held to just four hits, the Rivers Comets plated two runs in the fourth inning and made them stand up for a 2-1 victory over Glenboro Sunday. Cam White went the distance for the mound win besting Harry Lalonde. Each of the starters had six strikeouts. Wilf Taylor and Dennis Wiebe had the big blows for the winners each with a triple.

(June 14)   Greg Arason sparked the Glenboro Canucks with a homer and single Tuesday in a 5-3 victory over Boissevain. Harry Lalonde added a double and single.

(June 19)    Rivers ran its winning streak with seven games over the weekend with a 6-4 triumph over Boissevain Border Kings. Comets trailed 4-2 after seven innings but rallied for two in the eighth and two in the ninth for the win. Wayne Kapler went all the way on the hill for the Comets. Brian Gates took the loss.

(June 19)   Harry Lalonde twirled an eight-hitter allowing just one run as Glenboro pushed across two runs in the seventh inning for a 2-1 victory over Oak River.

(June 22)   Treesbank topped the Canucks 9-6 Wednesday at Glenboro. A three-run seventh inning secured the victory. Murray Bridges yielded eight hits in going the route for the win. Glenboro starter Charlie Hillhurst was saddled with the loss.

(June 26)   Rivers Comets took on two different teams Sunday and still came away with two more for the win column. Comets dumped Treesbank 7-2 in the first game and clobbered Elgin 14-0 in the second. Rivers collected just seven hits, to ten for Treesbank, but capitalized on five errors. Jim Madder led the winners with a double and two singles. Jim Rodgers had three hits for the losers.

In the second game, Carl Cunningham and Wayne Kapler combined on a two-hit shutout. Cunningham went just three frames of no-hit ball before he was relieved by Kapler in the fourth. Bob Mealy and Robin Couvier were touched for 17 hits by the Comets. Larry McCulloch collect four of them, Neil Reeves had three and Wes Walker added a triple and single.

(June 29)   Cam White threw a four-hitter Wednesday as Rivers Comets racked up their tenth straight victory in South Central Baseball League action stopping Elgin Cubs 6-2. Wilf Taylor cracked a two-run homer and single to lead a 10-hit Rivers attack. Neil Reeves collected three singles. Dean Couvier knocked in both Cub runs with a homer in the first inning. Lawrence Reid was the losing hurler.

(June)  The All-Star team which will oppose the league-leading Rivers Comets on July 9th has been announced. 15 players have been selected from the other five clubs in the league. Representing Elgin will be catcher Dean Couvier, outfielder Lawrence Reid and pitcher Deb Mealy.  Selected from the Boissevain Border Kings were infielder Murray Thomas, pitcher Brian Gates and outfielder Jim Holme. All-Stars from Oak River are outfielder Don Simm, infielder Larry McReady and pitcher Doyle Bailey. Pitcher Bruce Gullett, outfielder Morley Cowan and infielder Hank Fleming were picked from Treesbank. From Glenboro, infielder Ivan McDonald, outfielder Don Barr and pitcher Harry Lalonde.

(July 18)    A three-run outburst in the first inning got the Rivers Comets on track for a 10-6 win over Boissevain in the opening game of the South Central semi-final series. Comets rapped 11 hits, including a triple and single by Scott Wareham. Cam White and two relievers combined on a six-hitter for the win. Each team booted the ball six times in the error-filled contest.

(July 20)    A two-run homer by Bill Mowatt in the eighth inning carried Glenboro Canucks to a 3-2 decision over Elgin Cubs Wednesday. The Canucks' other maker also came on a homer, by Walter Hillhurst in the first inning. Glenboro won with just five hits compared with eight tallied by the Cubs. Harry Lalonde was the winner hurler. Doug Mealy took the loss.

(July 22)   Battling back from a 7-4 deficit, Rivers Comets pounded out 18 hits Friday in a 14-10 triumph over Boissevain to win the semi-final series in two straight games. Neil Reeves, Dennis Wiebe, Larry McCullough and Scott Wareham all had three singles for the Comets. Nere Hache added a pair of doubles. Murray Duncan rapped three singles for the Border Kings who had 12 hits.  Reliever Ron Thomas was the winner for Rivers. Joe Blackbird, also in relief, took the loss.

(July 29)  Elgin Cubs dumped Glenboro 11-5 Friday to advance to the league final series against Rivers. Cubs took the semi-final series two games to one. Andy Barnes led a 13-hit attack with a home run, double and single. Deb Mealy held the Canucks to seven hits in going the route on the hill for the Cubs.

(August 3)    The opening game of the South Central League final was a mismatch as Rivers Comets embarrassed Elgin Cubs 26-1 in a game called after eight innings. While the Comets slammed 19 hits, Cam White pitched a three-hitter, with late relief from Art Birch, for the win. Comets took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and then ran wild with seven in the fourth and 14 more over the last three stanzas. Jim Madder cracked a three-run homer while Wilf Taylor and Hugh Richards each clubbed two-run shots. Art Birch rapped a solo homer. Scott Wareham collected a triple and three singles and Neil Reeves hit a double and two triples. Nere Hache had a double and two singles.

(August 24)    There appears to be no stopping the Rivers Comets. The South Central champs defeated Melita 7-5 to with the best-of-three South Senior Baseball title in two straight games. Winning hurler Eddie Weymouth led an 11-hit Rivers attack with a double and two singles.  Weymouth twirled a six-hitter for the win, coasting until the final frame when Melita broke loose for three runs.

North MBA Senior Amateur semi-finals

(August 26)   The senior baseball nine from Eden captured the District Senior Baseball League championship Friday edging Neepawa Farmers 5-4 in a 12-inning thriller.  Eden won the series opener 1-0 at Neepawa and the Farmers squared the series with a 4-1 victory Sunday at Eden.  Eden now moves into the Manitoba Senior playdowns and will meet the winner of the Binscarth-Angusville series.

Rod McGorman, the right-handed ace of the Eden club bested southpaw Garry Martin of the Farmers in the pitching duel. McGorman gave up six hits, Martin yielded nine.  Farmers took the early lead with young catcher Elvin Hajnrych scoring in the first and third innings.  Eden tied it in the sixth as Jim Schmall cracked a two-bagger to bring in Jim Jackson and Richie Hanke.  There was no further scoring until the 12th when a Farmers' error, a hit batter, an outfield fly, triple by Ron McGorman and a single by Schmall accounted for three runs.  But, Neepawa battled back in the bottom of the frame as hits by George Whyte and Cecil Pittman, a walk and an error brought in two runs. But McGorman got Martin to pop up to first to end the threat and the game.

South MBA Senior Amateur finals

(September 4)    Rivers Comets won the South Division of the Manitoba Baseball Association senior playoffs Sunday taking both high-scoring games of a double-header, 16-14 and 14-11 over Pilot Mound. Comets dropped the opener of the series 9-0. Strong winds played havoc with fly balls as the hitters took charge of the action. A grand slam homer by Mel Harvey and a solo shot by Scott Wareham paced the Comets in the first game. Pilot Mound had a circuit clout by Bill Lecary. Cam White picked up the pitching win in relief.

(September 18)    Rivers Comets came from behind with three runs in the fourth inning Sunday to down Binscarth Cardinals 5-2 to even their Manitoba Baseball Association final senior series at a game apiece. Neil Reeves had four of Rivers six hits, a triple, double and two singles Ed Weymouth went the distance for the Comets holding Binscarth to five hits.

(September 25)   Binscarth Cardinals captured the Manitoba Baseball Association senior crown by defeating the Rivers Comets 8-2 Sunday in the deciding game of the North-South final.  The Cardinals jumped into a 7-0 lead after two innings and coasted to the win behind the four-hit pitching of Brian McCauley. Cards had 12 hits. Dale Gies led the champs with three hits and a walk in four trips to the plate.
