SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Doug Simon, 21-year-old Regina outfielder, has won the 1971 batting title, ending the season with a .413 average to edge Terry Buck of Swift Current for the crown.  Simon, who had six doubles and four homers, was tops in slugging percentage, .612.  Buck, who began the season with Melville, led the league in doubles, with 13, and was second in runs batted in, with 20. 

Ken Haanen of Saskatoon was third, at .369. Ned Andreoni of Moose Jaw finished fourth, .364, and led in runs with 23. Yorkton's playing manager Gord Johnson poked the most homers, 5. Don Laube also of Yorkton was the best RBI man in the circuit, knocking in 25 runs. Randy Munch of Sasktoon was the leader in steals, with 11.

Import hurler Gary De Benedetti was the class of the pitchers with the most wins, 9, best winning percentage, and lowest earned run average, a sparkling 0.95.  Greg Bromann, another American college product, was the runnerup with 7 wins and 1.67 ERA. Local right-hander Fred Cardwell, who pitched for the University of Oregon, for was third in ERA, at 2.09.  Randy Sawa of Regina led in innings pitched, 94 2/3s and strikeouts, 88.

NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN LEAGUE

Import catcher Marv Chamberlain (Washington St.) emerged as the hitting star of the 1971 NSBL.  In 19 games for the Neilburg Monarchs, Chamberlain ran away with the batting title with a .453 average and topped the league in home runs with 6.  Doug Wilkinson of Unity was far behind in second place with a .366 average.  Hugh McIvor of North Battleford was third, at .333. 

Gary Barker of North Battleford led in wins with 8 and strikeouts, 88.  Ross Stone of Unity won the ERA title as he finished with no earned runs in 34 innings pitched.

ALBERTA MAJOR BASEBALL LEAGUE

Import outfielder Jesse Chavez of the Edmonton Tigers ran away with the batting title in the Alberta Major Baseball League topping the circuit with a .430 average, more than 70 points ahead of teammate Dave Sowinski, the runner-up, at .357. John Hines of the Calgary Giants was third at .348.  Chavez and Sowinski tied for the most runs, 25. Maury Barden of Red Deer belted the most homers, 4, and Gary Malmberg of the Calgary Cubs had the most runs batted in, 22.  Bruce Lofting of the Giants stole the most bases, 13.

Cliff Ballou of Red Deer led the league in wins, 8, innings pitched, 106 2/3s, and complete games, 7. Tim Brady of the Edmonton Tigers had the best earned run average, an outstanding 0.96 mark.  Tom Changnon of Calgary Giants compiled the most strikeouts, 105, and was second in ERA with a 1.48 average

BASIN LEAGUE

Outfielder R.J. (Reuben John) Englert of the Mobridge Lakers captured the batting title in the Basin League with a .342 average. The Texas A & M product also led in runs scored, with 43. Teammate Chris Sans was the leader in runs batted in, with 46.  Willie Norwood of Sturgis topped the circuit in hits, 65, and home runs, 11. Tom Kennedy of Chamberlain had the most doubles, 12, and Bob Sheldon of Rapid City the most triples, 6.  John Stearns had the most thefts with 20 stolen bases.

Bob Cuellar was the league leader in earned run average, 1.27, wins, 11, and strikeouts, 123.  Jeff Dusek of Mobridge had the most complete games, 11.


MANITOBA SENIOR LEAGUE

Rich Carrier of the Minot Merchants and Gene Cory of the Riverside Canucks were declared co-winners of the 1971 batting title, even though Carrier finished ahead, .3684 to .3678.  With rounding to three decimal points, both finished at .368.  Gord Roberge of Rolla was third at .339.

Bernie Graner of Souris Cardinals topped the hurlers in wins, with 8. Glennis Scott of Hamiota had the top winning percentage with his 6-1 won-lost record.

WEST KOOTENAY SENIOR LEAGUE

Al Doherty, shortstop of the Trail Silver Kings, captured the batting championship of the 1971 West Kootenay Senior League besting four members of the Nelson Indians. Bob Jeffs was the runner-up with a .425 average, Armando Porco finished at an even .400, Terry Minnis was at .390 and Ernie Moisey at .350.  Porco led the circuit in hits, 24, and runs batted in, 17. Joe Zanussi of Rossland Capilanos was tops in runs, with 18. 

Don Mainland of Trail led the pitchers posting an earned run average of 1.33 a full run lower than Brian Hamagami of Grand Forks who was second. Mike Ward of Trail had the best winning percentage with four wins and no losses.
