Rookies 2004

28 December, 2003

Web Fund    Winter ball ... Puerto Rico -- Yadier Molina STL 3-5, 2 doubles, 2 runs, 2 RBI, .336 ... Michael Restovich MIN 2-4, .306 ... Luis Matos BAL, CF, 2-2, double, .300 ... Miguel Negron TOR 3-5, .311 ... Javier Valentin FA? 4-5, 2 homers, 6 RBI, .254 ... Mexico -- Freddy Bynum OAK 2-4, double, .306 ... Calvin Pickering KC 2-4, .288

Projections ... among the more tantalizing tidbits at this time of the year are the player projections.  As you know, we've carried Ken Warren's hitting and pitching projections for the past couple of seasons.  This year, Ken is self-publishing a book (more below) to be available for purchase early in the New Year.

To get an idea of how Ken's 2003 projections worked out I've taken a small sample -- my combined league team in the Mantle League -- and compared Ken's offerings with those from Shandler's Baseball HQ.  Overall, with 12 hitters and five categories for each, there were 60 points for comparison.  Final score -- Ken Warren 30, Shandler 23, 7 ties.  (I hope to get the report on the pitching projections in the next day or so).

In BATTING AVERAGE, Ken had the closest projection for 6 of the players, Shandler 5, with a tie.  OBA -- Ken 7, Shandler 5.  SLG -- Ken 9, Shandler 2, 1 tie.  Shandler's best area was in SB, making the closest projection for 6, while Ken topped with 2 and they tied on 4.  In HR -- Ken 6, Shandler 5, 1 tie.

Interesting that neither really had a handle on relative newcomers -- Cintron, Matos -- and both missed the power surge from Varitek.

At least TB can look to the future.  Kevin Goldstein, Baseball America, in his review of the 2003 TB Top 10 and 2003 draft, sees much to like, including BJ Upton :

" ... got off to a slow start in his pro debut, but found himself in Double-A at the age of 18 after hitting .411 in July. A five-tool player right now with an excellent batting eye, Upton is one of the top prospects in the game and it's not out of question that he could make his major league debut before his 20th birthday. Led all minor leaguers with 56 errors, but that was mostly a result of showing off his plus arm as opposed to sloppy play. He projects as a plus defender."

" ... Dewon Brazelton ... miserable in 10 major league starts and found himself all the way down to the Class A California League to fix his mechanics, where he only began to make progress as the season came to a close. Returned to his old delivery while adding a plus slider to his repertoire in the Arizona Fall League, where he went 5-0 and led the circuit in strikeouts. By all accounts, he's back on track."

" ... Antonio Perez ... showed solid power and on-base skills for a middle infielder, and held his own at the major league level while playing second base, third base and shortstop. His versatility and pop should ensure him of at the very least a bench role in 2004."

" ... Top Draft Pick: Delmon Young ...  first overall pick ... made a strong statement by reporting to the advanced Arizona Fall League and hitting .417 in 15 games just weeks after his 18th birthday. Both physically and in his swing mechanics, he's an Albert Belle doppelganger, and he should be productivity-wise as well."

Looks as if Mike Gullo -- The Minors First -- is to be the first off the mark with a Top 100.  Mike's 4th annual prospect list is due next Thursday, January 1st !

Ken's book, "Baseball Projections, 2004" is scheduled for shipping on January 12th. Contact Ken for more info. John Sickels prospect book is due for shipping in early February.  More info

John Sickels, ESPN.com, looking at some guys who may be looking at road maps over the holidays :

" ... Jorge de la Rosa, LHP (Boston to Arizona to Milwaukee) ...has a live left arm, with a 90-94 mph fastball. His curveball and changeup are sometimes mediocre, sometimes very good, and he's made strides in improving his control. He posted a 2.98 ERA with a 119/48 K/BB ratio between Double-A and Triple-A in '03. He could begin the year in the Milwaukee rotation."

" ... Chris Capuano, LHP (Arizona to Milwaukee)  ... missed 2002 with Tommy John surgery, but recovered successfully and pitched well in '03. His fastball is average at 88 mph, but his curveball, slider, and changeup are solid pitches, and he throws strikes. He appeared in nine games for the D-Backs at the end of the year, posting a 4.64 ERA. But this was deceptive; his component ERA, what you'd expect his ERA to be considering his K/IP, H/IP, and K/BB ratios, was much better at 3.45. He is a major sleeper for 2004 and could be one of Milwaukee's best pitchers."

" ... Mike Nannini, RHP (Cubs to Marlins) ...  originally drafted by the Astros in the supplemental first round in 1998 ...   fastball is mediocre at a consistent 88-89 mph. His curveball and changeup are very good and he has excellent command, posting a 158/47 K/BB ratio in 154 innings this year for Double-A West Tennessee. Scouts worry that Nannini's mediocre fastball will preclude him from big major-league success, but he has a good feel for pitching and could emerge as a Brad Radke-type starter."

Taking a re-look at Dayn Perry's Top 10 OF ranking.  Just in case you haven't been paying attention, this on Alexis Rios TOR even before his splendid winter ball campaign :

" ... Prior to 2003, Rios, a first-rounder in 1999, didn't look like much of a prospect. But that's before he completely exploded in the Eastern League. This past season, toiling for New Haven, Rios, in 514 ABs, put up a batting line of .352 AVG/.402 OBP/.521 SLG. That's impressive. There are some causes for skepticism. One, 2003 was the first uniformly strong season in his career, and, two, a lot of his value is tied up in his batting average ...Still, that he tore up the high minors to such a degree is hard to ignore. He needs to improve his walk rate and prove 2003 wasn't a fluke. I like his chances on both counts."

And, there's a sleeper for the Expos, long time farmhand Terrmel Sledge :

" ... You don't hear much about Sledge, an eighth-rounder in 1999 ...but he's a good one. At 26, he's too old to be an elite prospect, but he's done nothing but hit his entire career. A career batting line of .308 AVG/.400 OBP/.473 SLG tells the story. As those numbers indicate, Sledge can hit for average, draw walks and stroke balls to the gaps. He's coming off a particularly strong season in the PCL, and with the exodus of Vlad Guerrero he's probably won himself at least a platoon job at the highest level. Don't be surprised if he emerges as a dark-horse rookie-of-the-year candidate in 2004."

A few snippets on some mid-level prospects from Matthew Pouliot's RotoWorld reports :

" ... Matt Riley BAL ... Riley, one of the game's elite pitching prospects back in 1999, finally made it all the way back from Tommy John surgery last season, going 10-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 152 2/3 innings between three levels. Although he's no lock for a rotation spot and could have control and consistency issues in the majors, he should be viewed as one of 2004's better sleepers. If things break right, 12 wins with an ERA right around 4.00 is a possibility."

" ... Kelly Shoppach BOS ... missed the first month of 2003 after off season shoulder surgery. His performance after returning solidified his status as a future major league regular. Although he doesn't do any one thing especially well, Shoppach could be similar in quality both offensively and defensively to the catcher he might replace in Boston in 2005, Jason Varitek. Fantasy leaguers should look forward to some .270, 15-homer seasons."

" ... . Eric Duncan NYA ... displayed excellent offensive potential during his pro debut. What he didn't show was much of a glove at third base, so there's already talk that he'll end up at first base. Since he has the ability to hit for average and power, his bat should still be useful at first. He does need to become more disciplined at the plate, though."

" ... Jeff Francoeur ATL ... a tools prospect with a very good idea of how to play baseball, giving him an excellent chance of becoming a major league right fielder ...  need to work on his tendency to chase bad pitches, but he's hardly clueless at the plate and he shows excellent power potential. Although Francoeur currently plays center, it's expected that he'll be shifted to right as he continues to trade speed for power. He's not going to move quickly, but when he arrives in three years, he's going to make a big impact."

" ... Bubba Nelson ATL ... quality prospect as a starter, Nelson was shifted to the pen for the final month of last season so the Braves could see whether he might help them or not. Since he was never called up, he'll probably go back to starting games at Triple-A Richmond next season. A sinker-slider-curveball combination makes Nelson a potential third or fourth starter."

" ... Brian Anderson CHA ... 15th overall pick in the 2003 draft hit .338/.492/.592 in 49 AB for Rookie Great Falls before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery. A center fielder with speed and power, he's an intriguing fantasy prospect."

" ... Kody Kirkland DET ... Stolen from the Pirates in the Randall Simon trade, Kirkland hit .303/.390/.496 in 254 AB for SS Single-A Oneonta. He's very far away, but he has the most upside of the bats in the Detroit farm system."

" ... Bobby Brownlie CHN ... pitched well in his first action as a pro, but he was shut down in July as a precaution because of more shoulder troubles. Brownlie's velocity isn't what it was in college, but he still throws in the low-90s and has a terrific curveball. Even though his shoulder is a major concern, his No. 2 starter upside allows him to remain a top prospect."

" ... Jason Lane HOU ... Although it might make sense to use him over Craig Biggio in center field, Lane fits best in right. He'll open next season as Houston's fourth outfielder. Once he gets regular playing time, Lane should have some .290-20-90 seasons."

" ... Bryan Bullington ... The No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, Bullington put up quality numbers in his pro debut but was something of a disappointment. He lost three mph off his fastball, which was typically in the 91-94 mph range while he was at Ball State, and that made his slider less effective. If he recovers his velocity -- and the Pirates believe he will -- last year's experience might end up making him a better pitcher, as he was forced to rely more on his curve and change. 2004 will determine whether or not he's truly a top prospect."

Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld, with lots of interesting reading in his NL Central report.  For example, Felix Pie as the top prospect pick on the Cubbies :

" ... Pie ... already an outstanding defensive center fielder and he has the ability to become a very good hitter. As of right now, he projects as a Johnny Damon-type player. However, he could add enough power to become a 20- or 25-homer guy. Don’t expect to start seeing big minor league numbers from him until 2005 or 2006. He’s probably three years away from the majors."

Big lefty Andy Sisco ranked No. 2 :

" ... Certainly one of the most talented prospects in the minors, the 6-foot-9 Sisco has a 91-95 mph fastball and three complimentary pitches, including a nasty splitter. He has some maturity issues -- he missed nearly two months of last season with a broken left hand sustained while punching a wall -- but since he doesn’t turn 21 until January, that’s not a major concern. If he can avoid arm problems, Sisco has ace potential."

Matthew selected lefty Brandon Claussen as the best of the CIN farmhands :

" ... His velocity was down slightly, but Claussen ...  made a successful return from Tommy John surgery in 2003. The left-hander’s low-90s fastball and plus slider make him a strikeout pitcher, even if he didn’t show it while with Columbus. The fact that he was shut down in August for precautionary reasons isn’t much of a concern, and he’s expected to have a spot in the Cincinnati rotation next season."

Newcomer Taylor Buchholz rated No. 1 in the HOU system, ahead of catcher John Buck :

" ... Buck has taken a step back offensively the last two years, but he still projects as a solid regular catcher ... ready for the majors defensively. He may not quite be Brad Ausmus, but he has a strong arm and pitchers like throwing to him. The offensive potential is still there, too ... He’ll probably hit .260 with 15 homers per year in the majors."

Righthander Fernando Nieve grabbed the #3 slot :

" ... With a fantastic showing in his native Venezuela (4-1, 1.88 ERA, 24 H, 46/8 K/BB in 38 1/3 IP), Nieve has probably done as much to improve his stock as any minor leaguer this winter. The 21-year-old right-hander has a sinking low-90s fastball and an impressive curve. His changeup needs work, but Nieve has at least as much upside as Buchholz, and if the improvement in his control this winter carries over to next season, he could move quickly."

Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks rated 1-2 for the Brewers with shortstop JJ Hardy at # 3 "

" ... Although he cooled off in the second half of the season, Hardy’s 2003 has to be considered a huge success. Already a quality defensive shortstop, the 2001 second-round pick dramatically increased his offensive production as a 20-year-old in Double-A. The Brewers were giving serious thought to making him their starting shortstop in 2004 before acquiring Craig Counsell in November. It’s now expected to be Counsell’s job on Opening Day, but Hardy should get his chance by the All-Star break. He could turn into a Rich Aurilia-type player."

John VanBenschoten took the top spot in the PIT farm.  Jason Bay was the runnerup :

" ... Bay, already traded three times in his career, is set to act as the Pirates’ regular left fielder next season. He somewhat resembles a young Rondell White, though he’s quite a bit more patient at the plate. He also should be more durable. The broken wrist that caused Bay to miss six weeks last season was a fluke. A bigger concern was the torn labrum he had surgically repaired in December. Bay may not be at full strength for the start of the season, but there shouldn’t be any long-term issues. He’ll be a solid regular for the next seven or eight years."

Another newcomer, Freddy Sanchez made the list, at # 5 :

" ... Sanchez, picked up from Boston ... has been one of the best hitters for average in the minors over the last few years. Although he can play shortstop and third, the Pirates plan to use him at second base. It’s probably his best position, as he doesn’t have a great arm. Assuming that he’s fully recovered from the ankle injury that cost him most of the final two months of last season, Sanchez will compete with Bobby Hill for a starting job in 2004. While he probably won’t ever be an All-Star, Sanchez should be a .300 hitter and an effective regular in the majors."

As expected, Adam Wainwright has jumped to the top of the STL chart (having earlier ranked as #1 in ATL).

Is MLB ready for the latest of the catching Molinas?  Yadier Molina ranked # 5 :

" ... The younger brother of Bengie and Jose, Yadier Molina is another quality defensive catcher with a questionable bat. He’ll probably end up having Bengie’s career, meaning he’ll alternate between being below average and dreadful on offense. There’s a chance that he could replace Mike Matheny in 2005. The Cardinals like him so much that they’d probably bypass Chris Widger and make Molina the starter if Matheny were to get hurt next season."

Simon Pond TOR, good shot at a bench job especially after winter performance :

" ... Pond has flown somewhat under the radar, though, despite success at the highest levels of the minor leagues. Last season, he hit .338 in a half-season with Double-A New Haven, then batted .306 after his promotion to Triple-A Syracuse. That followed an All-Star campaign in the Florida State League in 2002, his first year in Toronto's organization ... a classic late bloomer, a former eighth-round pick that took several years to develop. He signed out of high school in 1994 and played six years in Montreal's organization, but never really showed any signs of development ... Toiling for first-place Santurce, Pond pops up several times on the league's leaderboard. He's batting .292, and he's tied for first in home runs (10) and second in RBIs (28)."

" ... At the age of 27, nine years after signing his first pro deal, he's finally on the fringes of the Major Leagues. Of course, nobody's pencilling him in for a roster spot. Pond will have to achieve that like he's achieved everything else -- through hard work and against great odds. If he hits well in Spring Training and cements a reserve role, he'll lend the Jays some versatility off the bench. He can play both first and third base, and he even played 11 games in the outfield last year." (MLB.com)

Maybe this is the year for former phenom Juan Cruz CHN :

" ... When asked during the Winter Meetings who would be the fifth starter for the Cubs in 2004, manager Dusty Baker tabbed right-hander Juan Cruz. Cruz, 25, is tuning up for the job in the Dominican Winter League, pitching for the Licey Tigers. In three games, including two starts, Cruz is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He had given up two earned runs on nine hits and three walks over 13 innings while striking out 15. "It's time he gets an opportunity," Baker said. "We'll see how he looks this spring. He's throwing the ball good in winter ball." (MLB.com)

Andy Marte, now clearly No. 1 in ATL :

" ... Now that Adam Wainwright is gone, Andy Marte can legitimately lay claim to being the top prospect in the Braves organization. Marte, who is projected to be in Atlanta by the start of the 2005 season, has seen his star rise since belting 21 homers and driving in 105 runs for Class A Macon in 2002. This year, the 20-year-old third baseman will play at Double-A Greenville. This winter, Marte is playing for Azucareros in the Dominican Republic. Through 16 games, he was hitting .256 with a homer and five RBIs. Marte isn't the type of player that scouts rave about at first look. He doesn't have an imposing figure and possesses just average speed. He's able to generate power to all fields because of his quick wrists and in the field scouts say he has outstanding range. The Braves are content to leave Marte in Greenville this year. But last year at this time, the Marlins said the same thing about World Series heroes Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, who both began began last year on the Double-A level."
