  Troop Movements ...

   From RotoAmerica's Who's Hot :

1. Sean Gallagher, SP, CHC ... 2. Howie Kendrick, 2B, LAA ... 3. Brad Eldred, 1B, PIT ... 4. Justin Huber KC :

" ... Another great trade by the Mets. I think they could probably use a 1B who has a 1.128 OPS in the Texas League with more walks than strikeouts. Huber would also be a better defensive catcher than Mike Piazza but is playing 1B in the KC organization because of John Buck."

5. Anibal Sanchez, SP, BOS

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, has kicked off an interesting feature -- The Double-A Transition Monitor -- to track and report on pitchers in AA.  Paul Maholm PIT is included in the initial report :

" ...  Pittsburgh's first-round pick in 2003, from Mississippi State, eighth overall in the draft. He posted a 1.84 ERA last year, but was limited to just 8 starts after being hit in the face with a line drive. That's OK now ...   Maholm is not a hard-thrower, relying on an upper-80s fastball and an assortment of breaking balls and changeups. Although his overall A-ball stats were good, his strikeout rate was low enough to give some concern about his chances in Double-A. So far, he's doing OK for Double-A Altoona: 1-1, 4.19 ERA in 5 starts, with a 16/6 K/BB ratio in 19 innings, 17 hits allowed. Maholm just went on the Altoona disabled list with a strained groin. He is expected to be out 10-14 days, but the injury is not considered serious. At this point, his Double-A transition is going adequately."

Zach Chalifour, RotoTimes, on Justin Verlander DET :

" ... The second-overall pick of last year's draft, Verlander hasn't wasted any time in proving why he was the highest-selected pitcher ...  The 22-year-old opened the year for the Lakeland Tigers of the High-A Florida State League. Verlander has posted a 3-1 record in five starts this season and has fanned 36 batters in 30 innings while maintaining a 1.50 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. With an outstanding fastball and curveball, as well as a developing above-average changeup, Verlander has the potential to grow even more dominant and boost his already impressive strikeout total. More importantly, he has demonstrated very good control by issuing only seven free passes thus far in 2005. Originally expected to spend about half of the year in Lakeland before a mid-season promotion to Double-A Erie, Verlander's performance has jumpstarted the talks of a promotion, and he could join Erie by the end of the month if he has another two or three dominating starts. He has the demeanor and the pure stuff to move through the organization quickly."

Jered Weaver ?  Still a possibility.

" ...  We've made concessions in an attempt to get this done, and until he goes back into the draft, we'll continue trying to get something done," Boras said. "But there is still a sizable gap between our position and where the Angels are." Angel owner Arte Moreno said Friday he "hasn't given up" hope of signing Weaver...   "We have the rest of May." Weaver, who went 15-1 with a 1.65 earned-run average and 201 strikeouts in 136 innings at Long Beach in 2004, was looking for an $8-million signing package ... Moreno confirmed "there have been discussions" recently between Boras and Stoneman, he would not say whether those talks had yielded any progress toward an agreement. " (LA Times)

Some pitching depth when neither Thomas Diamond, Ricardo Rodriguez nor John Danks is the Rangers' top minor league moundsman :

" ... The Rangers named catcher Gerald Laird (.381-4-11 in 63 at-bats) and righthander Eric Hurley (3-0, 2.33, .214 opponents' average, 29-5 strikeout-walk ratio in 27 innings) their minor league player and pitcher of the month for April." (The Newberg Report)

Not sure what's up ... but Stephen Drew has missed Camden's last four games.

John Sickels offers his assessment of the Angels' middle infield riches in a piece at FutureAngels -- Erick Aybar, Alberto Callaspo, Brandon Wood and Howie Kendrick :

" ... Kendrick has tremendous bat speed, a compact swing, and power to all fields. Although his walk rate is not high, he works the count fairly well and has excellent hand-eye coordination. He may have the best pure bat stroke in the Angels farm system. His defense at second base can be erratic, and better defense was his main need heading into 2005. I gave him a Grade B+ in the Baseball Prospect Book, rating the 21-year-old as the number 37 prospect in baseball."

Scott Rex, OnDeck, ranks the prospects in the Eastern League with BAL starter Hayden Penn at No. 1.  Here's the top 10 (of 40) :

1. Hayden Penn, RHP, BAL          6. Yusmeiro Petit, RHP, NYN
2. Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS        7. Jon Papelbon, RHP, BOS
3. Eric Duncan, 3B, NYA           8. Francisco Liriano, LHP, MIN
4. Franklin Gutierrez, OF, CLE    9. Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS
5. Michael Aubrey, 1B, CLE       10. Joel Zumaya, RHP, DET

Gio Gonzalez CHA on his DL stint :

" ... I have a sore right oblique. It's not that serious. I could be out there pitching again in a couple of weeks. I don't want to rush it ... It's not that serious, but they don't want you to go out there and get hurt even more ...  I can throw just as hard as I was before, but I just don't want to push it. I've thrown [off flat ground] for a week and I'm still bringing my velocity up. Maybe it will be another two weeks before I'm back on a mound." (MLB.com)

John M. Barten, 'Til You're Blue in the Face, on Eddy Martinez-Esteve SF :

" ...  one of my favorite prospects going into the draft. Judged on talent alone, he should have been drafted in the middle of the first round. However, slipped in the draft due to some concerns about signability and his indifferent defense. Because of his hitting and his defense, he's drawn natural comparisons to Manny Ramirez. I'm surprised we don't see that as a comp more often ...  a good hitter. He sported a 1.164 OPS as a junior at FSU and kept on hitting as a pro ... He's a born DH if there ever was one. In the NL, the Giants would probably want to hide him in left. In fact he's being billed as the eventual successor to Barry Bonds out there ... hitting for power and average and drawing walks like they're going out of style ... For fantasy owners in keeper leagues with minor league reserve rosters, he's a solid guy to either go out and get now, or watch closely, depending on the depth of your league and your roster."

Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com, on Jeremy Hermida FLO :

" ... Everyone wondered when the power would come with Jeremy Hermida. Well, it's coming right now in Carolina. He's got eight homers a .642 slugging percentage and .422 OBP for the Mudcats. That'll work. The Marlins don't hesitate jumping guys from Double-A right to the big leagues. That being said, their outfield situation is pretty set. I think Hermida will be ready next year."

Stephen Drew & the D'Backs ... the forced relationship nearly at an end :

" ...  Diamondbacks have virtually given up hope that shortstop Stephen Drew, their first-round pick from last year's draft, will agree to terms before they lose his rights May 31. If he doesn't sign, Arizona will receive a compensatory sandwich pick between the first and second rounds in this year's draft, the 48th overall choice, and Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick said the team is prepared to use it. "We've made what we believe is the best offer we know how to make," Kendrick said of a five-year deal, potentially worth $7.5 million ... "We've gone as far as we think is reasonable in terms of our circumstances and the value of any drafted player." ... The Diamondbacks have the No. 1 overall selection this year, due to having the worst record in the majors in 2004, and with additional picks as compensation for the departure of free agent Richie Sexson, Arizona will have six of the top 85 picks. The draft will be held June 7-8." (Arizona Republic)

Jagdip Dhillon, Stockton Record, with a feature on Daric Barton OAK :

" ...  With a surplus of catchers in their organization, the A's promptly moved him to first base this spring.  "We think his bat's going to come quicker than his glove, and he's a pretty good athlete, so it would be crazy to stick him behind the plate with all the guys we have," Oakland General Manager Billy Beane said. ... The 6-foot-1 Barton, a third baseman in high school, is learning his third position in four years ... "He's got decent hands," Ports manager Todd Steverson said. "But he's an average fielder right now and he can get better."  ... Barton has had mixed results at the plate, hitting .241 with two home runs and 12 RBI.  He blames his struggles on a technical glitch in his swing and says he's not getting his front foot down in time to create a compact swing. Steverson said he's not worried ... "He's very young, and for a 19-year-old kid, he reacted well to his big-league at-bats in spring training," Beane said. "Early indications are he's going to be a very special hitter."

Catchup -- Neither Edwin Jackson nor Jerome Williams living up to expectations :

" ... Jackson let most of a five-run lead slip away and got a no-decision in Las Vegas' 8-7 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies ... "I felt I had a couple pitches I could have thrown better," said Jackson, who went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks. He threw a scoreless sixth and left with a 7-5 lead ...  Jackson was brilliant at times, striking out the Grizzlies' Todd Linden on a 96 mph fastball with the bases loaded in the third inning, but he also allowed solo home runs to Linden and Athas. "I want him to dominate," 51s manager Jerry Royster said. "He's down here getting his work in, and that's exactly what he got tonight. But we need more dominant performances." Jackson, who won his previous two starts while allowing just one run in 11 innings, was finished after 105 pitches ... . Jackson gave a better effort than Fresno right-hander Jerome Williams, who made his second Triple-A start since being sent down by the San Francisco Giants. Williams labored through a six-run third inning, in which Jackson led off with a single and came to the plate again to add an RBI single that put the 51s ahead, 7-2. "  (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

" ... Allison went five innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits ...  20-year-old right-hander pitched deliberately at the start and appeared out of rhythm. Delmarva Shorebirds second baseman Pete Maestrales led off the game with a double and was driven in two batters later when designated hitter Jason Franz crushed a mid-90s fastball to the center field wall for another double. "I had the feeling I'd get hit a ton because I hadn't pitched in so long," Allison said. "Once I got on the mound, I just wanted to get past the first batter. I was much more comfortable after that." It showed. Allison struck out two in the second inning and gave up another run in the third on a soft liner that glanced off the top of the shortstop's glove. It easily could've been scored an error. Allison threw his fastball in the low 90s with regularity and showed a sharp curveball that froze several hitters for strikeouts. Overall, he threw 69 pitches, 47 for strikes, struck out three and walked none." (MLB.com)

Troop Movements ... ARZ - Kerry  Ligtenberg up (Randy Choate designated for assignment) ...

Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld.com, includes notes on a pair of pitching prospects in his latest prospect report :

" ... Tim Stauffer ...  the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft could soon make his major league debut. In part due to a shoulder injury that cost him some velocity and a whole bunch of money, Stauffer doesn’t have the upside one typically associates with a top-five pick ...  Stauffer made his pro debut last year and went 11-5 with a 2.89 ERA, 167 H and 113/48 K/BB in 168 IP at three levels ...  he’s 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA, 28 H and 23/7 K/BB in 29 2/3 IP this season. Stauffer works at 88-92 mph these days. Fortunately, his fastball is rarely straight and he complements the pitch with three other offerings ...  With Petco Park set to support him, Stauffer is a very good fantasy prospect ...   easy to imagine him posting ERAs under 4.00 while starting half his games in San Diego."

" ... Chad Orvella ...  had a 116/10 K/BB ratio in 73 2/3 IP between four levels last season, should have opened the season in Triple-A Durham’s pen ...  depending on how Jesus Colome performs, he could be a candidate to close for the Rays after Danys Baez is traded this summer. Orvella works at 93-96 mph and his slider is a plus offering."

Dayn Perry, FoxSports, rates the best of the third base prospects with  Andy Marte, Ian Stewart at the top of the heap and some relative newcomers easing into the top 10 :

" ... 5. Billy Butler ...  Florida prep product with tremendous hitting skills, Butler, the 14th overall pick of the 2004 draft, has excellent plate discipline, a smooth line-drive swing, quick hands through the zone and advanced pitch-recognition skills. Offensively, he looks like the total package, but some scouts doubt he'll be able to stick at third. Even so, his bat will be enough to carry him as a first baseman or DH."

" ... 7. Matt Moses ...  a first-rounder in 2003 out of high school, suffered a serious back injury last season, which dragged down his numbers. This season, however, he's knocking the snot out of the ball in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League. Moses has broad, high-ceiling offensive tools and figures to hit for power and show patience at the highest level. He was a high school shortstop, so he's still adjusting to third base. However, he should be a capable defender there over the long haul. He'll need to stay healthy, but his offensive potential is tremendous."

" ... 8. Andy LaRoche ...  a 39th round draft-and-follow in 2003. He boasts outstanding raw power and excellent defensive skills at the hot corner. Last season, LaRoche struggled a bit in the Florida State League, but that's a tough circuit for 20-year-old hitters. This season, he's back at Vero Beach and has 16 extra-base hits in 26 games. He needs to work on using the whole field and taking more walks, but he could be good for 30-40 homers one day in the majors."

Jim Callis, Baseball America, on Sean Gallagher CHN :

" ... He's not very projectable because he already carries 210 pounds on his 6-foot-1 frame, but he already has solid stuff and an advanced feel for pitching for a teenager. Chicago was able to draft him in the 12th round out of a Fort Lauderdale high school last June because he was considered a tough sign if he didn't go in the first three rounds. Gallagher has been lights out in each of his five starts this year, surrendering a total of just six runs (all unearned) while posting a 37-6 strikeout-walk ratio and .103 opponent average in 29 innings. On the basis of five low Class A starts, I wouldn't put him in the Top 10 if we revised it right now, especially in a strong system. But the Cubs did think he had the potential to be a real sleeper from their 2004 draft, and he's not doing anything to change their minds. He projects as a middle-of-the-rotation starter, and it's safe to assume he's pitching his way into the 2006 Prospect Handbook at the very least."

More injury woes for TOR catcher Guillermo Quiroz :

" ... Quiroz underwent surgery in Florida this weekend for a collapsed lung. Quiroz, considered the organization's top catching prospect, was already shelved with a shoulder problem and the surgery means he will be out for six weeks. General manager J.P. Ricciardi said it is "very, very unlikely" that Quiroz will see any major-league playing time this year. "We'll try to get him going in the end of June and maybe get him in the Arizona Fall League," Ricciardi said. It's the second time Quiroz has suffered a collapsed lung, and Ricciardi said he has been told the surgery was designed to build up scar tissue and prevent it from occurring again. "We've been told there's a 95-per-cent chance he won't have it again," Ricciardi said." (Globe & Mail)

Notes from the International League :

" ...  starter Brian Tallet is tied for fifth in the International League with a 2.25 ERA, but he still doesn’t have a victory in 2005. All five of his starts have been decided late (three in extra innings), leaving the Herd’s lefty with no decisions. Tallet has yet to allow more than three runs in a game and is holding opponents to a .200 average."

" ... catcher Ryan Garko had an outstanding road trip for the Bisons this past weekend. The Indians #8 prospect by Baseball America hit .563 (9-16) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs and four RBI in the five-game span. He also added three walks and six runs scored."

" ... Cla Meredith ... Fans may not know his name yet, but they will soon because Meredith is one of the top prospects in the organization. The 21-year-old righty has been flawless for Portland this season firing 15 scoreless innings thus far. Meredith is 1-0 with 9 saves and a 0.00 ERA in 12 games going 15 innings allowing just 5 hits with 3 BB & 12 SO. A 6th round pick by the Red Sox in the 2004 draft out of Virginia Commonwealth, he was outstanding last year in Single-A going 1-2 with a 1.14 ERA in 29 RA with 18 saves combined in 2004."

" ... Overall a pretty solid month for Marte, who saw his rate numbers dragged down by an eight-day slump. From April 19 to the 28th Marte went just 5-for-36, which is the reason his numbers look pretty low ... I still believe the Braves are best suited with Chipper Jones and Ryan Langerhans on their outfield corners, with Andy Marte at third. I was hoping that Marte would come out of the gate red-hot, proving that breakout people have been calling for would be in 2005. He hasn't, and it is beginning to look more and more like Marte might just turn into a solid, but not spectacular, third baseman."

" ...  Francoeur ... The walks are getting concerning. I mean, this is a guy that in April has walked in about 3% of his plate appearances, and had the exact same struggles in the AFL. Superstars don't walk this little, so I'm a little wary about forecasting Francoeur's ceiling. I love the power, and sincerely believe he is a future 30-HR threat in the Majors. But, how valuable is that with an OBP that will, at best, be .340? What if it's .307?"

" ...  Niemann ...  I think could very well turn out to be the best player drafted in 2004. While the MLB scouting service said last year that Niemann would be "quick to the ML level," I disagree. If I were the Devil Rays I would be extremely conservative with Jeff, giving him all of this year and most of next year in the minors. The 6-9 rightie has some control issues that need to be fixed in the California or Southern Leagues, not in the Majors. Still, given that flaw, Niemann's ceiling is insanely high. He already is in possession of four good pitches, including a fastball that he can really dial up when needed. He'll likely move up to the Southern League at some point, where Chuck Lamar really should keep him for the rest of the year."

Baseball America, noting some moves in the FLO system

" ... Big doings in Greensboro. 22-year-old lefthander Jason Vargas was promoted to high Class A Jupiter after going 4-1, 0.80 with 33 punchouts in 33 2/3 innings. To replace him in the rotation, the Grasshoppers have activated the Marlins' 2003 first-round pick Jeff Allison. More known for his well-chronicled drug problems, Allison has been with the team, but on the inactive list since the start of the season. He is schedule to make his first start tomorrow against Delmarva."

Once such a promising prospect (shortstop no less) :

" ... The Elmira Pioneers [Can-Am League] believe they solved their need for a power hitter with the signing of outfielder Chad Hermansen, a former first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates ... Hermansen, 27, was drafted 10th overall by the Pirates in 1995 and went on to play for Pittsburgh, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. He has 13 career major league home runs. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder split time between the Blue Jays and their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse last year ... In 10 minor league seasons, Hermansen has a .265 batting average with 161 home runs and 541 RBI." (Elmira Star-Gazette)

Brad Eldred PIT ... to the top of Kevin Goldstein's Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America.

" ... On Tuesday, he homered. On Wednesday, he homered. On Thursday, he did not homer, but he had an excuse, as his team was off. Maybe he took some batting practice and homered or something -- I don't know. On Friday, he homered. On Saturday, he homered. On Sunday he homered, then on Monday, he homered . . . twice. On Tuesday, he was promoted to Triple-A. The end."

Matt Cain SF ranked No. 2, ahead of Sean Gallagher CHN.  ANA 2B Howie Kendrick sits at No. 4 :

" ... Seemingly bored with only hitting .400 (.407 to be exact), Kendrick has now added power to his game, smacking four home runs last week to give him eight on the season. Now leads the minor leagues in hits (44), runs (33), and total bases (78)."

Over at RotoJunkie, Brad Dowdy has a nice wrap on pitching prospects in the Carolina League :

" ... Jeremy Sowers. ... will not blow you away with the heat - his fastball peaks around 90 - but his command is very impressive. That is what has been on display in the early part of the 2005, as Sowers has walked just three batters in 26-2/3 innings, striking out 23 in the process. Don't expect him to headline a rotation in the majors, but he could do good work in the middle of the rotation, and should definitely be on your fantasy radar."

" ...  Anibal Sanchez ... quick start for the Red Sox new affiliate in Wilmington - 35 SO/1 BB, 14 H in 20 IP - has created a lot of buzz around the minor leagues. Sanchez was signed out of Venezuela in 2001, and pitched for two seasons in the Venezuelan Summer League. A nerve problem in his elbow caused him to go under the knife and miss all of the 2003 season, but he ventured stateside in 2004 and dominated for the Lowell Spinners in the New York-Penn League. His 1.77 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 76-1/3 innings led the league for the Spinners. The 21 year-old could be a fast riser in the quickly improving Red Sox farm system, needing only experience and continued good health to continue his rise. Sanchez is a good one to file away for next years drafts."

Giants' phenom, Matt Cain, the Pitcher of the Week in the PCL :

" ... Cain went 7.1 innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out 10 in his third win of the year ...  3-0 on the season with a 1.75 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. The 20-year-old was a first-round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants and is considered to among the top prospects in the organization by Baseball America. Cain was the organization’s Player of the Year in 2004, going 13-5 with a 2.67 in stints with single-A San Jose and double-A Norwich." (Pacific Coast League)

Texas League notes from MLB.com :

" ... Erick Aybar is one of the Angels' most talented prospects and is making the biggest jump in Minor League baseball -- Class A to Double-A. Through his first 20 games, at least, he's taken to the competition. He's hitting .273 and, most impressively, he's committed only two errors. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "There's not a play on the field that he can't make." --Arkansas manager Tom Gamboa on Aybar."

" ... This has been a year of change for San Antonio shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt-Perez. After defecting from Cuba in 2003 and waiting through 2004 to get permission to enter the country, Betancourt-Perez is getting his first experience in American baseball. Thus far, the move has been up and down. He's hitting only .221 but has shown a Major League quality glove, committing only three errors. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: He's a classic shortstop. He comes at it with what I'd say is probably more classical training coming out of a Cuban program. He's got a lot of range and he's got a good arm, hits. He's a genuine article. --Texas League President Tom Kayser on Betancourt-Perez."

Who could have predicted ... Texas would have some pitching depth :

" ...  righthander Ricardo Rodriguez, continues to make his case for a rotation spot in Texas, as soon as someone falters or gets hurt. After last night's gem (one Albuquerque run on three hits in seven innings, six days after he blanked the same club on three hits in seven frames), he now has four quality starts in five times to the mound and sits at 3-2, 2.91, limiting the Pacific Coast League to a .178 clip." (The Newberg Report)

Abe Alvarez BOS, moving closer to another shot with the Red Sox :

" ...  second-round pick (49th overall) in the 2003 draft  ...  named Double-A Portland's pitcher of the year last season, compiling a record of 10-9 with 3.59 ERA, 108 strikeouts over 135 1-3 innings, and a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 3.38 ... General Manager Theo Epstein ... "Abe's a rare minor league prospect that doesn't cause us to worry at all about his mental development. He's as polished a guy as we've seen from a mental standpoint.  He's got unbelievable composure on the mound. He's very well prepared." ...  Alvarez (2-1, 3.90), began this season with Triple-A Pawtucket and got off to a rough start. In his first outing, he went four innings, giving up six runs on four hits, two home runs, and two walks, while striking out two ... Since then, he has made four starts, allowing seven runs on 18 hits while striking out 15 over 232/3 innings. Alvarez has not allowed a walk since that first start  ... Alvarez does not possess a blazing fastball. A 'crafty lefty' control pitcher with command of all his pitches, his fastball, which is in the 84-88 mile-per-hour range, is complemented by a curve ball and changeup." (Brockton Enterprise)

ANA 2B Howie Kendrick & STL righty Adam Wainwright included among the notes in BA's Daily Dish :

" ... Kendrick continues to put up great numbers at high Class A Rancho Cucamonga. Kendrick went 6-for-12 over the weekend, including a two-home run game yesterday in the Quakes' 5-2 win against Inland Empire, raising his season totals to .413-7-20 in 104 at-bats. Kendrick leads the minor leagues in hits (42), runs (32) and total bases (74)."

" ... Wainwright continues to impress at Triple-A Memphis. The 6-foot-8 righthander allowed two runs over 7 1/3 innings against Iowa yesterday. He did not figure in the decision but has a nifty 2.10 ERA in 34 innings while striking out 27 and walking four."

John M. Barten, 'Til You're Blue in the Face, on lefty Dallas Braden OAK :

" ...  Braden has emerged from the obscurity of the 24th round to mow down California League hitters left and right. To do this, he uses a fastball the ranges in the high 80's, a pretty good change, and a lethal screwball ...  He has promise, but a wait and see approach may be more appropriate. If he keeps up this pace, he should get a trial in AA later this season. Towards the end of 2005, we'll have a much better idea of whether he can keep this up. Some people worry about the screwball and injury risks. I'm not sure if any one pitch in particular is more likely to injure a pitcher who throws it. The slider gets this reputation too. It's something worth keeping an eye on, but I'm not going to dock somebody's grade because of it."

PIT righty Ian Snell named as the Pitcher of the Week by the International League while Rich Hill of the Cubs cops the award in the Southern League :

" ...  Snell ... making his Triple-A debut this year, despite getting the chance to pitch in three games last year with Pittsburgh ...  April 25 he turned in his best outing of the season ... allowing just two hits and no runs in 6.1 innings of work ... next start on April 30 ...  went 7 innings, giving up one run while scattering five hits on only 90 pitches. He struck out six, walking just one ... In his two starts last week, he was 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA and 10 strikeouts, allowing a mere 7 hits and one run in 13.1 innings of work. His four wins are tied for most in the International League, and his total of 28 strikeouts is good enough for second in the League." (International League)

" ... Left-hander Rich Hill of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx was nearly unhittable in two starts during the week, allowing only three hits in 14 innings of work. On April 25 ... seven innings, allowing one earned run, while striking out 14. The lefty was even more dominant when he took the mound April 30 ... threw a no-hitter through seven innings, but was removed from the game when he reached 100 pitches. The 25-year-old struck out 12 batters, bringing his total for the week to a whopping 26 strikeouts ...  selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2002 draft out of the University of Michigan."  (Southern League)

Catchup ... Felix Hernandez SEA

" ...  Hernandez pulled off a difficult trick Saturday night. The Mariners’ top pitching prospect was hit harder than in any previous start, yet he pitched a complete game as the Tacoma Rainiers won the second game of a doubleheader ... The 19-year-old tied a career high by allowing 10 hits, and he was touched for his first home run in 63 innings. Yet he was able to keep his pitch count under control, going the distance for just the second time in his career. “His breaking ball was not as sharp as in the past,” Tacoma manager Dan Rohn said. “But he still got through seven innings on 99 pitches. “Not a lot of guys can not have their best stuff and still throw a complete game.” ...  “Felix is going to have some adversity. It might be the best thing to happen to him, to get hit hard a little bit,” Rohn said. “It might get him to command his pitches better.” Hernandez is 3-2 with a 2.48 ERA in five starts."    Jim Callis, Baseball America, on Brian Bannister NYN :

" ... Bannister, 24 ... progressed rapidly since the Mets took him in the seventh round out of Southern California in 2003. He held his own after reaching Double-A last August and has excelled there in four starts this year, going 4-0, 0.42 with 26 strikeouts and five walks in 21 innings ... tied for the minor league lead in victories and opponent average. Bannister's stuff isn't as dominant as those numbers, but he has a solid mix of average pitches and knows how to mix them up and throw them for strikes ... projects to fit more into the back of a rotation or middle relief rather than becoming a frontline starter."

The Everett Herald with a roundup of the SEA system, including a hot start by Chris Snelling :

" ... In his first eight games with the Rainiers, Snelling was batting .514 with one home run and 10 runs batted in. Wednesday at Colorado Springs, he went 5-for-6 and drove in four runs. "He has really come out of the gates hot," said Greg Hunter, the Mariners' director of minor league operations. "We're excited to see that. We're on pins and needles hoping he stays healthy." Snelling had arthroscopic surgery in February on his left knee and continues to feel the effects. Since coming back, he has played half his games in left field and half as the Rainiers' designated hitter."

Jays' Janssen an early star in the Midwest League :

" ... Right-handed starter Casey Janssen is 2-0 through four starts and ranks in the league's top 10 performers with a 1.69 ERA. He also leads the league in strikeouts (29) and innings pitched (32) "It's been a good start," said Janssen, a fourth-round pick out of UCLA in 2004. "It's been exciting but it is a long season and I understand that it is just a start. I've got 20-something games left so you can't get too high and you can't get too low. I'm trying to stay level-headed."  (Lansing State Journal)

Ambres was a hot commodity coming out of West Brook High in 1998 ... Marlins' first-round draft pick (27th overall) ...  spent the first three full seasons in single-A ...  first season at the triple-A level. Boston signed him to a minor-league deal last November ... Ambres said he really started to feel comfortable in the batter's box over the final two months of last season, and the stats over that time support him. In the last 20 games for Carolina, his hit .350 with 7 home runs, 16 RBI, 25 runs and 24 walks. It is likely that last stat got Boston's attention since the team puts a lot of weight into on-base percentage, and Ambres leads Pawtucket with a .455 mark after yesterday. "He's really pushing people right now," mananger Ron Johnson said of Ambres. "Two grand slams in a week, he's doing a heck of a job."  (Providence Journal-Bulletin)
