VANCOUVER ISLAND

VICTORIA

Victoria had both an independant semi-pro team and a senior amateur league to begin the 1909 season.

The fate of the semi-pro Victoria Kolts became unknown after a well-publicized set of games in May & June. Coverage beyond that point vanished, strongly suggesting that the baseball club had too. In mid-August, however, a brief article appeared in the Victoria Colonist suggesting that remnants from the original team, no longer referred to as the Kolts or as having a semi-pro designation, were considering a late-season revival and were hoping to play a few games against teams in the senior amateur loop. Finally, after a challenge from the James Bay Athletic Association senior amateur team, a three-game series was arranged to begin on Labor Day. The combatants split the first two clashes and nothing was located in the Capital City print medium indicating that the proposed third skirmish was ever played.

The senior amateur circuit seldom was mentioned in the sports section of the Victoria Colonist and coverage was almost non-existent during the regular campaign except for the odd exhibition contest featuring the same James Bay Athletic Association squad that finished the season in the aforementioned challenge series.

(June 12)   Shutout for six innings and behind Seattle Cubs 6-0, Victoria rallied for seven runs in the last three innings to squeeze out a 7-6 victory. The local nine got the winning marker in the bottom of the ninth as Plummer singled, stole second and came dashing home on Frank Moore's two-base blast. It was a five-run seventh which got Victoria back in the game.  A two-run double by Leonard Wattelet and another by Plummer highlighted the Kolt fireworks.

(August 19)    The Victoria baseball club is to hold a meeting to try and revive the club after a long relapse. Manager Leonard Wattellet has called the gathering. It is planned to bring in some top competition after the team gets back in shape with a series of games against teams from the local Senior League.
