1919 WEST KOOTENAY BASEBALL

There were encouraging signs that baseball within the West Kootenays was about to be rekindled now that the Great War in Europe had ended although, for the most part, diamond activity was still very limited.

(May 29)  With several young players in their lineup, Rossland captured a 9 to 6 victory over visiting Trail in a match in which the Silver City nine utilized four pitchers. Winning chucker Robert Crerar was the big noise with the willow in this affair, slamming a pair of doubles to go along with two one-baggers. Trail starting flinger Johnny Wilmes nailed a seventh-inning four-ply dinger that struck his car which was parked along the outfield perimeter.

(July 18)  As part of Trail’s Peace Day celebration, a rare baseball match was held, Nelson providing the opposition to the locals. The Lakesiders took an early 6 to 1 lead but, in the end, the Trail baseballers, despite little practice time, prevailed 12 to 9.

(August 10)  The visiting band of Trail baseballers romped to an easy 20 to 3 victory over the Nelson Cubs in a game at Recreation park. The Smeltermen put the game on ice with a fifth-inning splurge that netted them 11 runs. Howard and Scanlan, who were the moundsmen for the Silver City nine, were particularly effective in stymying the Nelsonites.
