Heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis knocked out Max Schmeling in the first round of their rematch at Yankee Stadium.

The New York Yankees won their third consecutive World Series by sweeping the Chicago Cubs in four straight games.

The Chicago Black Hawks won their second Stanley Cup by taking down the Toronto Maple Leafs three games to one.

The Broadview Buffalos repeated as Southern Saskatchewan League pennant-winners in 1938 but bypassed any playoffs as the circuit ended prematurely at the end of July. The Weyburn Beavers, without playing a single playoff game, were handed the provincial title by default following a playing date dispute with the Wilkie Outlaws, the northern representative.

Vancouver winners in 1938 were United Distillers Limited (Senior City League), Merritt-Gordon Hotel (Commercial League) and the Asahis (Burrard League). The Nippons went on to defeat Merritt-Gordon three games straight in an inter-league challenge series. Kamloops captured the B.C. Interior League title and the Trail Cardinals went undefeated in league play but were upset by the Cinderella Rossland Miners in the West Kootenay League finals.

The pennant-winning Cardinals were dumped by the runner-up Arrows in the 1938 Edmonton Senior League finals. Picture Butte went undefeated with one tie in claiming the Foothills League pennant. Stettler won the Central Alberta League championship while the Blairmore Canucks were the premiere club in the Crow’s Nest Pass circuit. After eleven consecutive face-to-face playoff matches against their arch-rivals from Lethbridge, Picture Butte’s hustling ball club finally disposed of the Galt Miners by whipping their adversaries 5 to 2 to take possession of the Alberta senior baseball championship for 1938.

Transcona defeated St. Boniface to earn their first-ever Greater Winnipeg Baseball League crown.
