suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run and striking out 14 in a
complete game. Lincecum who may have seen his final college mound action,
finished the night with 199 strikeouts this season, falling one short of
becoming the second pitcher in Pac-10 history to notch 200 strikeouts in a
season. Over his nine innings, Lincecum allowed three runs (one earned) on eight
hits, walking two." (U of Washington)
" ... ACC Pitcher of the Year Andrew Miller
(11-2) went six innings and allowed season-highs of seven runs and five walks to
go along with six hits. He struck out four to surpass the 100-strikeout mark for
the second straight season and now has 102 on the year." (UNC)

Snippets from the weekly report from the International League :
" ... OF Adam Boeve has started
his Triple-A career with a bang. The 25-year-old, who was promoted from Double-A
Altoona on May 18, is 10-21 with one double, one home run, three RBI and four
runs in six games ... The Eastern League's April Player-of-the-Month has also
registered a .667 slugging percentage and .522 on-base percentage."
" ... It was a very up and down week
for Orioles prospect RHP Hayden Penn. After being recalled Sunday to make
his first Major League start of the season on Tuesday in Seattle, Penn was
diagnosed with appendicitis on Monday and was brought to a Seattle hospital to
undergo surgery. The unfortunate timing saw Penn placed on Baltimore's 15-day
disabled list, and he is expected to miss three to four weeks."
" ... 3B Josh Fields currently
leads the League in slugging percentage (.584) and is tied for 4th in doubles
(14). OF Jerry Owens is tied for 2nd place in the League with 30
runs scored, closely following behind Franklin Gutierrez of
Buffalo who has scored 32 runs. Owens is also tied for 2nd place in the IL with
15 stolen bases. As a team, the Knights are 2nd with a .258 batting average."
" ... The Bisons have a pretty
formidable 1-2 combination when it comes to starting pitching. Jeremy Sowers
(6-1, 0.94) and Jeremy Guthrie (3-0, 0.64) have each been
dominating for the Herd so far this year. Guthrie, who is back from a six-game
stint with Cleveland, has allowed runs in only one of the 28 innings he's
pitched in for Buffalo this season. He has also limited IL hitters to a .188
batting average with no home runs. Sowers, meanwhile, has allowed just four hits
in his last 15 innings of work and now has not allowed an earned run in 26.1
consecutive innings. Only once in 10 starts has an opponent scored more than one
earned run against the southpaw."
Aaron Fitt, Baseball
America on Yanks' Brett Gardner :
" ... Gardner was
expected to move fast after being drafted by the Yankees in the third round. He
spent last summer helping short-season Staten Island win the New York-Penn
League championship, and he has had no difficulty skipping a level to high Class
A Tampa this year. The 22-year-old outfielder hit his fifth triple of the year,
stole his 18th base and drove in three runs in Tampa's 10-5 win against St.
Lucie on Thursday. He is now hitting .361/.482/.468 in 158 at-bats with 36 walks
and 39 strikeouts. His 80 speed on the 20-80 scouting scale has translated into
triples, steals, bunt singles and stellar defense in center field ...
"This kid is amazing," Tampa manager Luis Sojo said. "He puts a lot of pressure
on the defense--it's nice to have him on my side." ... Sojo said Gardner still
needs to work a bit on picking the right times to steal bases--he's been caught
five times--and improving his outfield reads, but he asks a lot of questions and
improves quickly. It seems only a matter of time before he moves quickly up the
Yankees system, as well.
A Tiger tidbit from Bryan Smith,
TheBaseball Analysts :
" ... The next starter-turned-bullpen ace should
come via Humberto Sanchez, who seems to be continuing upon his Arizona
Fall League success. This season, the 6-6, 230 pound giant has allowed just 38
hits in 57.2 innings, while striking out 68. Sanchez may still have a career in
starting left, but teamed with Zumaya, the Tigers could have bullpen dominance
for a decade."

which he posted a 2.72 ERA in 15 starts at Rookie-level Hudson Valley. Now

is his 25 walks, but Davis has almost always been able to get out of trouble and
most importantly, has never had any serious control problems in the past. With a
strong finish to the season, Davis will likely become the Devil Rays consensus
top pitching prospect, though he won't reach Tampa Bay anytime before 2008."
6 to 8 weeks on the shelf for A's top prospect :
" ... The River Cats learned Wednesday
that injured first baseman Daric Barton is expected to miss six to eight
weeks because of an arm injury ... Barton has gone from being rated as the
top prospect in the Oakland farm system before the season by Baseball America,
to hitting .259 and occasionally struggling defensively his first 43 games at
Triple A, to possibly being sidelined two months. The latest, and worst, hit to
the development of a promising hitter came when tests showed a fractured bone in
the left forearm adjacent to the elbow. The closest thing to good news for the
A's and River Cats was that Barton likely won't need surgery and didn't have
cartilage or ligament damage in the joint, either of which could have greatly
extended the timetable for a return. But the diagnosis also was far from the
hoped-for outcome that he would miss a week or two with a hyperextended elbow,
the result of the arm on his glove hand being snapped back in a collision while
reaching for a throw in the first inning Tuesday." (Sacramento Bee)

It's Jered Weaver atop the
RotoAmerica Who's Hot
chart :
" ... Clearly the best Weaver in the organization.
A 2.05 ERA is pretty impressive. 2. Kevin Slowey ... 70 Ks in 54 innings
for this former first rounder. 3. Matt Garza ... 6-1 with a 1.09
ERA between High-A and Double-A"
Much concern in the A's front office as the team awaits word on the seriousness
of an elbow injury to Oakland's top prospect :
" ... The sight was Daric Barton writhing on the
infield dirt ... as the River Cats' manager, Tony DeFrancesco, and
trainer, Walt Horn, broke from the dugout, carrying with them the concerns of an
organization ... the A's lost Barton, their top prospect ... to an
elbow injury that will sideline him indefinitely ... "I've got a feeling
it's going to be awhile," DeFrancesco said ... Third baseman Scott
McClain charged and threw to first on a close play. Barton, angled toward the
plate, stretched down the line to meet the throw and collided with Womack.
Barton's left arm snapped back, forcing the ball from his glove and sending him
to the ground in obvious pain for several minutes. Upon standing, he went
directly to the clubhouse and then the hospital for X-rays. Results were not
available." (Sacramento Bee)
Not knowing what to do with Justin Huber, the Royals now want him to
playing a bit in the outfield :
" ... at the current rate, converted catcher
Justin Huber might need four or five different gloves when he finally lands a
permanent spot on the Royals. Huber, whom the Royals are grooming to be their
first baseman of the future, played left field Monday for the Class AAA Omaha
Royals. It just gives him some more versatility, Royals manager Buddy Bell
said. He likes the idea. It gives him a chance to play different positions.
Whether its first base, outfield or wherever, the Royals want to see Hubers
bat in their lineup next season. Theres no doubt with Huber that we feel
confident that hes going to be a very good big-league hitter, Royals general
manager Allard Baird said. (Kansas City Star)
" ... Zack Greinke threw 40 pitches Monday in
Surprise, Ariz., in a controlled structure: 20 pitches, sit down, then 20
pitches. The next step is for Greinke to throw 40-45 pitches Thursday under
actual game conditions in extended spring training. Bell said if Greinke keeps
progressing, he could join the Royals sometime in June. If hes healthy
(mentally), the byproduct of that will be that the rest is easy, Baird said.
Because youve got a player who loves baseball; its never been a baseball
issue. (Kansas City Star)
At FOXSports, Dayn Perry
adds the top pitching prospects to his postion-by-position analysis. Jered
Weaver LAA, Chad Billingsley LAD and Philip Hughes
NYA 1-2-3.
" ... Weaver has good stuff, a deep
repertoire and outstanding command indicators. If there are negatives it's that
his hit rates have been a bit high in past seasons, and he also shows fly-ball
tendencies. In 2006, however, Weaver has stepped up his game in a big way: in 57
innings at AAA-Salt Lake a brutal environment for pitchers he's been
dominant: 2.05 ERA, 66 strikeouts, only eight walks. There's a strong chance
he'll soon replace his brother in the Angel rotation."
" ... Hughes ... Keep your eye on this
one, Yankee fans. Hughes has battled shoulder tendonitis in the past, but the
stuff, makeup, mechanics and poise are all tremendous. He's got an outstanding
slider-sinker combo, and he's also making progress with his changeup. To boot,
Hughes does a solid job of keeping the ball on the ground ... he blew away
the Florida State League, and he's been solid since a promotion to AA-Trenton.
Keep in mind he's still only 19 and toiling against high-minors competition."

Matt Kemp LAD and Alay Soler NYN are just two of the entries in
this week's prospect report from
Nate Stephens, at RotoWorld.com :
" ... Kemp, who
wont turn 22 until this September, was naturally assigned to Double-A
Jacksonville to begin the season. Back in a pitching environment, Kemp has once
again shown similar production while also improving his plate discipline. With a
.339/.420/.544 line to go with 10 steals in 12 tries and a 33/20 K/BB ratio,
Kemp is looking like a future stud for both the Dodgers and fantasy squads. That
hes been able to handle more advanced breaking pitches while also showing
better pitch recognition is a huge step in his development. There are now even
rumors the Dodgers have been so impressed that they are considering calling up
the 64, 210-pound right-hander directly from Double-A. ... Kemps
talents suggest he could be a 20/20 player as soon as 2008. While hes played
center field in the minors this season, Kemp could also end up in a corner spot
depending on how the organization handles their sudden logjam of outfielders."
" ... Soler, another
Cuban defector who signed late in 2004, didnt make his debut in the United
States until this spring after problems with his agent and immigration papers
kept him in the Dominican Republic ... An assignment to High-A St. Lucie proved
to be a breeze as Soler posted a 0.64 ERA and 32/8 K/BB ratio in 28 innings of
work. A promotion to Double-A Binghamton went similarly well as Soler struck out
22 and walked just three with a 2.75 ERA in three starts. The Mets got sick of
seeing Jose Lima lose them games, so theyre jumping Soler all the way to the
majors after just three starts above Single-A. His experience in Cuba and his
advanced age mean he should adjust better than most players who make a similar
jump, but some initial struggles are still possible."
A new face atop the
Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America and a familiar name on the not-so-hot
list :
" ... 1. Kevin Slowey ... If
you're looking for command, it doesn't get any better than this 2005
second-rounder (out of Winthrop). In 54 innings for the Miracle, Slowey has 70
strikeouts--which leads the minor leagues--and just two walks to go along with
2-1, 1.33 numbers."
" ... 7. Ryan Patterson
... went 5-for-6 with two homers last Monday to raise his average to
.331. He's raised it to .339 since. Third in FSL in average and home runs (9);
fourth in slugging (.570) and extra-base hits (20)."
" ... Jarrod Saltalamacchia
... We've been putting this off, but it's time. Salty has been brutal at
the plate for much of the season, hitting just .205/.306/.325 in 125 at-bats.
He's made some progress defensively, throwing out 35 percent of would-be
basestealers, compared with 26 percent last season at high Class A Myrtle
Beach."
John Franco,
SportsBlurb, (subscription) checking in on more young guns having solid 2006
campaigns.
Jonathan Sanchez SF "
... a power lefty who the Giants have recently converted to a bullpen
role. With a fastball at least in the mid-90s and an improving changeup and
curveball, he has been unhittable for the Defenders this season. Through 29
innings, Sanchez has posted 43 strikeouts and 9 walks; he has allowed just 14
hits all season. His move to the bullpen likely signals the Giants conclusion
that he will need to scrap his changeup, at least for now, but he has the
potential to be a very valuable pitcher even working out of the bullpen."
Jay Bruce CIN "

year, hitting .266-9-38 in 192 at-bats between two stops. This year, the Reds
expect him to spend the whole year at Dayton, and thus far, he has justified
their high expectations. Through 42 games, Bruce is hitting .280 with 9 home
runs and 13 doubles in 161 at-bats. He is a potential five-tool player, though
his success in just 3 of 7 stolen base attempts shows that he is still rough
around the edges. Since he was drafted out of high school, Bruce wont turn 20
until April 3, 2007 which will probably be around the time of his debut for
High-A Sarasota."

A salute to some of the Players / Pitchers of the Week :
" ... Midwest League Erik Lis
[MIN] ... leads Beloit in almost every offensive category, and this week
was no different. The first baseman led the Snappers to a 5-2 week, hitting
safely in all seven games, including three three-hit games and four multi-RBI
performances. The outfielder is hitting .356 with 17 doubles, 28 RBIs and seven
home runs this season." (MLB.com)
" ... California League Carlos
Gonzalez [ARZ] ... has been playing in the shadow of Lancaster's star
hitter Chris Rahl all season but refused to be ignored this week. The right
fielder leads the JetHawks with 34 RBIs and falls second to Rahl in most
offensive categories after his clutch week. In Lancaster's 13-2 win over San
Jose on Saturday, Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored."
(MLB.com)
" ... Midwest League Travis
Wood, [CIN] ... kept his record unblemished with two more wins this week.
Determined to remain undefeated, Wood handed Southwest Michigan's Wade Davis his
first loss on Sunday. He gave up just one hit in 5 1/3 innings and didn't give
up a run. Wood stands at 4-0 with a 3.74 ERA with the Dragons this season." (MLB.com)
" ... Ben Fritz [OAK] ... did
everything he could possible do in the two starts last week except record a win.
On the 16th against Corpus Christi he tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing
just six hits and no walks ... was on the mound again Sunday and allowed
just a run over six innings on five hits and two walks. For the week he allowed
just 13 base runners and just one run in 14 innings ... drafted in the
first round of the 2002 amateur draft ... pitched well until 2004, where
injury trouble caused the hurler to miss most of 2005." (Texas League)
Kendry Morales LAA, PCL
" ... Morales hit safely in five consecutive games and collected multiple hits
in four of them en route to the offensive award ... went 11-for-22 on the week
with a home run and an .864 slugging percentage." (Pacfic Coast League)
A sigh of relief in Arlington :
" ... an MRI
revealed that left-handed starter John Danks has a strained left forearm.
He has no structural damage or torn ligaments. As a precaution, Danks will miss
his second consecutive start with Frisco on Thursday. He's scheduled to throw in
a bullpen session this weekend and is expected to start next Tuesday or
Wednesday at Arkansas, according to RoughRiders officials. "It was what we
expected and that's good news," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. Danks
complained of elbow soreness last week and was held out of his scheduled
Saturday start. After a slow start (1-4 with a 7.15 ERA in his first five
starts), Danks pitched at least six innings in each of his next three starts,
was 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 18 innings before the soreness."

Dodgers beginning to like the kids :
" ... Emboldened by the success of recent call-ups
Russell Martin, Andre Ethier and Willy
Aybar, the Dodgers are seriously considering promoting power-hitting
outfielder Matt Kemp from double-A Jacksonville. Kemp, 21, is
batting .343 with six home runs and 29 runs batted in with 10 stolen bases in 42
games. He has 30 strikeouts and 19 walks ... The Dodgers have also discussed
promoting Joel Guzman or Delwyn Young from triple-A
Las Vegas, but sources said Kemp is the leading candidate even though he is the
only one of the three not on the 40-man roster." (LA Times)
Former first rounder calls it quits.
" ... OF BJ Garbe announced his
retirement after last night's 9-4 loss to the Smokies. Garbe doubled in his
final at-bat and completed his career with a .235 average and 37 professional
home runs. Garbe was Minnesota's first round pick in 1999 from Moses Lake High
School in Washington, and was signed by the Marlins in December, 2005 as a free
agent." (Carolina Mudcats)
