That was quick. Ryan Zimmerman up to Double-A :
" ... Zimmerman was the fourth overall selection in
the free-agent draft earlier this month. The Nationals announced, at the time of
the draft, that he would start in Harrisburg. That plan was changed and
Zimmerman went to Savannah. While in Savannah, Zimmerman appeared in four games
and hit .471 on 8 for 17 hitting. He had two doubles, one triple, two home runs
and six RBI's before his promotion today." (Harrisburg Senators)
Bryan Smith, Baseball Analysts,
reviewing some of his breakout picks :
" ... Andy LaRoche- I liked him, sure, but
this much? Leading the minor leagues in home runs as we almost enter July? No,
not quite. And as Brandon Wood is no doubt being helped by his environment, the
California League, LaRoche has not exactly been playing in hitting havens. At
this point, I wonder what separates LaRoche from Ian Stewart, except for a
couple years that Ian has on him. With that being said, LaRoche is undoubtedly
the third best prospect at his position, and with Andy Marte graduating to the
Majors, has an argument for the top spot. There are things like patience and
defense that could still be improved, but if you're good enough to send Joel
Guzman back where he came from (SS), you are being noticed."
" ... Jon Lester- Last year, Lester's
season stats were a bit misconstrued by bad play early and bad play late. I
worried the same would happen this year, when Lester began the season allowing
six runs in eight innings. There were good signs (13K/1BB), but an ERA of 6.75
was not how I hoped he would start the season. Since then he has been dynamite
with a 2.27 ERA and 6.82 H/9, even if his K/BB is 'just' 61/26 ... Jon continues
to be a sleeper. People are waiting for that Verlander-type game, not
appreciating the consistency that Lester has had en route to his 2.75 ERA."
Notes on the top KC prospects in the weekly report in the Kansas City Star :
" ... OF Billy Butler, High
Desert: Eight for 17 in four games since returning from hand injury and shifting
from third base to left field ... OF Mitch Maier, Wichita:
Has yet to walk in 64 at-bats over 14 games since promotion from High Desert ...
OF Chris Lubanski, High Desert: Batting .382 in June with eight homers
and 27 RBIs in 20 games."

What a concept ... young pitching talent on the way to Texas. A fab three
ready to delight the fans in Double-A Frisco :
" ... The hoopla that will accompany the trio of
[Thomas] Diamond, John Danks and Edison Volquez
in the same rotation for the RoughRiders will be unlike anything the young
pitchers have seen, some of their teammates said. In fact, the nicknames are
already flying around ... The best one so far: "The Untouchables." ...
Edison Volquez, coming off a shutout at Corpus Christi, makes his home debut
Saturday. It also intensified Wednesday when Major League Baseball announced
Diamond will join Volquez in the All-Star Futures Game ... Danks, the only
left-hander of the three, makes his third home start Friday. Volquez make his
home debut Saturday ... Diamond, who was 8-0 for Class A Bakersfield, makes his
Double-A debut Monday ... It will be nice to see the excitement around the
ballpark surrounding the three young starters, Frisco manager Darryl Kennedy
said. But there are more important matters like progress. "The bottom line is
they've got to pitch and keep improving," Kennedy said. "This is just another
step in their careers." Danks, 20, and Volquez, 21, already have made progress
in Frisco. Combined, they are 3-3 with a 3.10 ERA and 37 strikeouts in seven
starts. Volquez had a shutout Thursday. The only problem Danks has had is walks.
He has 10 in 251/2 innings." (Dallas Morning News)
John M. Barten, 'Til You're
Blue in the Face, on Adam Harben MIN :
" ... Harben is a nice surprise for the Twins. They
didn't expect much when they drafted him out of a JuCo. He's developed into a
real prospect. His stuff has become pretty filthy, with a mid 90's fastball with
a slider and change complimenting it. He's put up excellent strikeout rates
everywhere he's gone ....just needs to figure out how to put the ball in the
zone. If he does that, then he stands a good chance of riding the express
elevator to one of the best pitching staffs in baseball ... Harben is a lottery
ticket. If he works out, the Twins have hit the jackpot and can boast another #1
starter and all it cost them was a 15th round pick and a nominal bonus. If he
doesn't work out, you might not hear from him again."
Royals' top pick, Alex Gordon [named Friday as the winner of the 2005
Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the US], could
begin his pro career in Double-A :
" ... If he signs soon, general
manager Allard Baird confirmed, Ill send him to Double-A. Then hell go to the
Arizona Fall League ... What Im saying is he has survival skills, because of
his plate discipline, to handle Double-A. Will he be challenged? You bet hell
be challenged. The difference between Double-A and college baseball is night and
day. But he has the plate discipline and the maturity necessary to handle it,
and I would not be afraid to put him there. We see this as a developmental move,
not some sort of signing bonus. Gordon, a third baseman, was the second overall
pick in the draft and generally viewed as the nations top college player. He
batted .382 at Nebraska with 18 homers and 62 RBIs in 67 games." (KC Star)
Matt
Myers, Baseball America, on a premiere matchup in the SAL on Saturday -
Mets' Gaby Hernandez vs Troy Patton HOU :
" ... The Legends appear to have a slight edge in
the pitching matchup as Hernandez, coming off of a 115-pitch effort in the
no-hitter, will be limited to about 85 pitches. Patton should have a little more
in him after only going six innings Sunday. "If we can get six innings out of
(Gaby), I'd be really satisfied," Barton [Hagerstown pitching coach Shawn
Barton} said. "Patton is going to be tough to beat and I'd like
to think that Lexington thinks Gaby is going to be tough to beat so it might
come down to bullpens." On the season, Patton is 5-1, 1.45 with 89 strikeouts
and 19 walks in 75 innings. The lefty's fastball sits in the low 90s, and he
complements it with a plus curveball and change that hes able to throw for
strikes. "Troy is a great pitcher," Hernandez said. "What can you say? I'm
sure he is up to a good challenge and so am I, so we'll see what happens.
... Hernandez is 5-1, 2.32 with an 81-27 strikeout-walk
ratio in 78 innings. He features an advanced sinker in the low 90s as well as a
sharp curveball and a developing change."
Jay's Dustin McGowan makes quick work of rehab, back in AA :
" ... The 23-year-old McGowan was a
1st round pick (33rd overall) by the Blue Jays in the 2000 draft. He started the
year with New Hampshire last year and went 2-0 with a 4.06 ERA in 6 starts
before undergoing Tommy John surgery on his elbow and missing the remainder of
the season. He joined the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League on June
1 this year and has gone 0-1 with a 4.29 ERA in 5 starts. He gave up 7 runs on 7
hits in just 1.1 innings in his first start of the year and has given up just 3
earned runs in his last 4 starts, compiling a 1.37 ERA." (New Hampshire
Fisher Cats)
Jason Ratliff, MLB.com, profiles the catching corps for the Futures Game,
including Ryan Garko CLE :
" ... rise through the
Indians system has been nothing if not meteoric. After a requisite stint in the
short-season New York-Penn League in 2003, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound backstop
barreled his way up the ladder in 2004, stopping at Class A Kinston and Double-A
Akron just long enough to prove that he didn't belong there. He finished the
season at Triple-A Buffalo, where he hit .350 (7-for-20) in five games. All
told, Garko had hit a combined .330 with 33 doubles, 22 home runs and 99 RBIs,
and was named the Indians Minor League Player of the Year. And he's followed
that up by being named to the 2005 International League All-Star team and the
Futures Game U.S. Team. ..."I just never really thought that I'd be playing in
something like this, even as I watched it last year ... To me, it's a pretty big
deal. Not too many players get this opportunity. I mean, there are only four
catchers in Minor League Baseball who are chosen, so to be selected, you're in
pretty elite company."

is scheduled to pitch for the Everett AquaSox on Friday June 24 and Friday July
1 ... for injury rehabilitation assignments. Soriano, of San Jose, DR, is
expected to start during these two games. He will also be traveling with the
team to Spokane and is expected to start the June 28 game. He underwent "Tommy
John" surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 17 last year and spent the remainder of
the season rehabilitating after surgery." (Everett AquaSox)
Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld, includes notes on a high-flying Yankee prospect
and an under-the-radar future Ranger :
" ... Philip Hughes ...
establishing himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the low minors. As
an 18-year-old -- he actually turns 19 on Friday -- hes 7-1 with a 1.97 ERA, 46
H and 72/16 K/BB in 68 2/3 IP for low Single-A Charleston. He was placed on the
disabled list Tuesday with some shoulder tendinitis, but its not supposed to be
more than a minor problem. Hughes, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, has overmatched
mostly older hitters with a 91-93 mph fastball, a plus slider and a changeup
that is on its way to be major league quality ... Hughes should move very
rapidly for a high school product. If he stays healthy, he could debut as soon
as 2007."
" ... Edison Volquez
... isnt quite as good of a prospect as either John Danks or Thomas
Diamond, but hes closing fast and its expected that hell beat either of the
Rangers most recent top draft picks to the majors. A right-hander signed out of
the Dominican Republic in 2001, Volquez has taken a step forward in part because
hes showing better velocity this year, throwing 93-96 mph with regularity. He
also has a quality changeup and an average slider. The Rangers could make him
their fifth starter within the next few weeks."
Getting caught up with David
Regan at RotoAmerica with his California League prospect list. David
goes with Billy Butler KC, Stephen Drew ARZ and Brandon Wood ANA 1-2-3.
Lots of talent, though, down the list (stats updated through Wednesday"s games)
:
" ... 12. Kurt Suzuki, C,
Stockton (OAK) - .280/.395/.453 is his line, reflecting a solid 40:37 BB:K
ratio. Has a great approach at the plate and is more of a doubles hitter at this
point, but his swing and approach should at least allow him to hit 15 hr's
annually. He's at least adequate defensively. Will complete with Landon Powell
to take over for Jason Kendall sometime around 2007."
" ... 14. Adam Jones,
SS, Inland Empire (SEA) - Off to a solid start at the plate: .295/.374/.494. Off
to a bad start in the field: 19 errors. Probably will have to move off of SS and
I suppose 2B is a possibility, as 3B will be manned by Adrian Beltre for awhile.
He's got the bat to handle an OF position as well, and the way he's looking this
year at age 19 has to have the Mariners excited about his future." [Just
promoted to AA]
" ... 18. Miguel Montero,
C, Lancaster (ARI) - Has come out of nowhere to post a .355/.411/.645 start to
the season. The DBacks sure look loaded at catcher these days with this kid,
Koyie Hill, and Chris Snyder among others. Montero was signed in 2001 out of
Venezuela. Plate awareness could be better with just 22 walks in 73 games, but
that's still not horrible. Generates good power and the Dbacks like his defense
and leadership qualities. One to keep an eye on. He's 21."
Tidbits from the International League's weekly report :
" ... Pete LaForest on Tuesday
became the first player for Durham to hit three homers in a game since the
organization went Triple-A in 1998 ... It was his fourth multi-homer game of the
season. LaForest, who had a career-low seven homers last year, now has 17,
second in the IL to Buffalo's Ernie Young. LaForest is now six shy of his career
high of 23 homers, set in 2002 ... Josh Phelps, who passed
through waivers after being designated for assignment by the Devil Rays, joined
Durham on Monday. He had five homers and 26 RBI with Tampa Bay. In addition,
outfielder Joey Gathright and Luis Ordaz came off the DL this week
"
" ... Indians catcher Ronny
Paulino has been a regular contributor since making his Triple-A debut on
June 6. Paulino, who was promoted from Double-A Altoona, is hitting .460
(23-for-50) with 14 runs, six doubles, five HR and 16 RBI in 15 games for the
Tribe. The 24-year-old enters Thursday night's tilt riding a 14-game hitting
streak."
" ... Dustin Pedroia,
who went 1-for-4 with a key double and scored the tying run in the 8th-inning in
Pawtucket's 4-3 victory ... Batting second in the line-up and playing second
base he also made a fine defensive play, and in just one game has already become
a fan-favorite at McCoy. The 21-year-old was Boston's 1st pick (2nd round) last
June out of Arizona St. University. In 42 games last year he hit a combined .357
between Augusta (A) and Sarasota (A). This season at Portland (AA) he was
batting .324 (5th in the Eastern League ) in 66 games with 19 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 40
RBI, and 7 SB along with a .409 on-base pct. (3rd best in the League) ...
has more extra-base hits (49) than strikeouts (33) during his pro career (109
games)."
MIL 2B Hernan Iribarren one of a select few to be chosen for the Futures
Game :
" ... the West Virginia Power
manager is so certain second baseman has a Major League future. "He will
play in the big leagues," said [Ramon] Aviles, a former big league
middle-infielder with the Philadelphia Phillies. "There is no doubt."
Apparently, Aviles isn't the only one who thinks so. The 20-year-old Venezuelan
was selected to represent the World Team in the July 10 All-Star Futures Game in
Detroit ... "I'm so excited," said Iribarren. "I just got the notice. All
my teammates were happy for me." ... "(Hernan) works hard, very hard,"
said Aviles. "He's very aggressive and he is a very good hitter." Iribarren's
bat appears to be his ticket, even though his glove and speed are above average.
In 67 games this season, the second baseman is batting .327 with seven triples,
10 doubles, 32 RBI and 23 stolen bases ... Those numbers follow his
.422 batting average between Class A Beloit and the Arizona Rookie League in
2004. Scouts that have visited Appalachian Power Park rave about his ability to
cover the plate, but they wonder if Iribarren ever will hit for power. In 128
professional games, Iribarren has hit only seven homers. Just last week,
Milwaukee's assistant director of player development, Scott Martens, said the
organization is content with leaving Iribarren partnered with 18-year-old
shortstop Alcides Escobar. Which means despite his gaudy hitting statistics,
Iribarren might not leave the Power this year because Escobar still is
considered a youngster who needs time to develop at the low Class A level. "

" ... Getting Zito could put the Phillies over the
top in an incredibly balanced National League East that is there for the taking.
Not impressed with Zito's 3-9 record nor his 4.66 ERA? Keep in mind that this
6-foot-4 character with the 12-to-6 curve is playing for a terrible team. Plus,
following a brutal April, he's 3-5 with a 3.73 ERA in 10 starts. So, how do you
pry Zito from Oakland? The Phillies' farm system, as we all know, isn't
well-stocked due to Wade's past trade-deadline dealings, but Zito is a
difference maker worth parting with two, maybe three, young jewels. Offer
Ryan Howard, Gavin Floyd and Vicente Padilla. If
that doesn't cut it, tell Beane to pick any three prospects not named Cole
Hamels or Greg Golson. Losing speedy Reading center fielder
Michael Bourn would make the Phillies sick, but we're talking
about a premier left-hander calling Philadelphia home at least through 2006,
hopefully longer." (Randy Miller, PhillyBurbs.com)

All-Star rosters also published for the International League :
" ... The oldest player on the IL roster is
36-year-old Buffalo outfielder Ernie Young, and the youngest is 20-year-old
B.J. Upton, whose younger brother, Justin, was the No. 1 overall draft pick
this June by Arizona. Young leads the league in RBIs and is tied for the lead in
home runs with Durham's Pete LaForest at 17.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Ryan Howard -- the IL leader in average,
on-base percentage and slugging percentage -- has been elected to the All-Star
team in his first season at the Triple-A level. The IL's strikeout leader,
Ian Snell, who has 86 Ks through 87 innings, was elected a starter.
Snell, who threw a complete game no-hitter against Norwich on May 15, will be
joined by his Indianapolis teammate, Zach Duke, who is 11-3 with a
2.87 ERA in 100 1/3 innings." (International League)
Kevin
Goldstein, Baseball America, includes a note on Brandon Wood ANA in
Wednesday's Daily Dish :
" ... This year, Wood has exploded,
particularly with his power, as he needed just 25 games to match last years
home run total. Hes leading the California League with 23 homers to go along
with a .310 average and 55 RBIs in 287 at-bats. "He can hit, there's not doubt
about it," the scout said. "He has a lot of bat speed and really powers it
through the zone with power to all fields. I wish he had a little more plate
discipline, but you can't argue with the results so far." Woods biggest
question throughout his career has been his defense. At 6-foot-3 and nearing 200
pounds, Wood profiles well as the new breed of offensive shortstop but may lack
the speed to stay there. "He has plenty of arm," the scout said. "But something
about his lower half bothers me. He's very gangly from his hips down, and I just
don't see major league range." With a plus arm, most have projected a moved to
third base, but this scout has a different idea in mind. "I know everyone talks
about moving him to the hot corner, but I'd like to see him stay in the middle
of the infield. I think they should slide him over the second base, where I'd
see him as an offensive-first player in the Jeff Kent mold."
Dioner Navarro LA ... might want to keep a bag packed :
" ... Navarro, acquired in the off-season
trade that sent Shawn Green to Arizona, spent five days with the Dodgers after
Bako went on the disabled list May 27 but did not play. Rookie Mike Rose, a
journeyman minor leaguer, was brought up to back up Jason Phillips when Navarro
was sent back to triple-A Las Vegas. Rose, a switch-hitter, is two for 12 and
has done a credible job behind the plate. However, now that Bako is out, the
Dodgers might want Navarro to become acclimated to the major leagues without the
pressure of playing every day. Navarro, 21, is batting .303 with a .408 on-base
percentage at Las Vegas and has been especially hot recently." (LA Times)

" ... The first seven Fisher Cats had
no chance against Justin Verlander, popping the mitt with 99-mph
fastballs and painting corners of the plate. They all struck out. ... The
22-year-old Verlander went seven innings in his Double-A debut, allowing one hit
and striking out 11. To say the least, it was the most dominant performance
weve seen at the new park. He was blowing guys away, New Hampshire manager
Mike Basso said ... .After the first six Fisher Cats went down on strikes, the
stadiums radar gun mysteriously was turned off ... Thats one of
the best arms Ive seen. Detroit Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila made
the trip to get a first-hand look at the future. Verlander, who usually hits 100
mph at least once per outing, posted a 9-2 record and 1.67 ERA with Lakeland
this season. After striking out 104 batters in just 86 innings, it was time for
a promotion. Hes been pitching like this all season, and thats why hes
here, Avila said. The velocity is impressive, but the best thing today is the
command of all his pitches, including his breaking ball. If you notice, hes
buckled some knees with that breaking ball. (Manchester Union

Thomas Diamond TEX is the new No. 1 at
Kevin
Goldtstein's Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :
" ... When the Rangers promoted righty Edison
Volquez and lefty John Danks from Bakersfield to Frisco, they left their top
prospect behind, even though he's having the best season. Diamond finally forced
the issue Sunday afternoon with a one-hitter, striking out 14 and facing the
minimum 27 batters. His final line for the Blaze: 8-0, 1.99 with 101 strikeouts
and just 53 hits allowed in 81 innings."
Ryan Howard PHI ranks No. 2, ahead of Troy
Patton HOU, Justin Verlander DET and Delmon Young
TB. ARZ catching prospect Miguel Montero continues to
attract attention, ranking at No. 9 (even before Tuesday's 2-homer game) :
" ... Montero entered the year ranked fifth on the
Diamondbacks' catching depth chart, but it's hard to deny a minor-league leading
105 hits and a California League-leading 70 RBIs, to go along with a .360
average and 19 home runs."
John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, with
some observations on some Double-A prospects :
Jeff Francoeur ATL " ... Scouts
love Francoeur's tools ... certainly has superior
athleticism and a lot of raw power, but his plate discipline at lower levels was
mediocre at best .. His
current line is approximately equivalent to .230/.285/.400 at the Major League
level, inadequate for a starting outfielder. At age 21, he has plenty of time to
improve ... a
solid prospect, but he is not in the Delmon Young category."
Elijah Dukes TB " ... Dukes is even toolsier than
Francoeur and is one of the best pure athletes in baseball ... numbers are similar to what he did in A-ball,
with little or no deterioration. His walk rate is slightly higher than Francoeur's and his strikeout rate slightly slower
... a lot of his OBP is tied up in
his batting average, and if he goes below .275 or so his OBP will be inadequate.
Dukes is five months younger than Francoeur, so his performance this year is
certainly appropriate on an age/level basis. Frankly I think Dukes is a slightly
better prospect on his own terms, but he has a lot of emotional baggage in his
background and questions about his makeup. If those are resolved in a positive
way, he could be/should be an excellent player."
RotoAmerica.com goes with Delmon Young as the hottest of the prospects :
" ... 1.) The minors' best prospect is also #1 on
this week's Hot/Cold List. Delmon's last 2 games: 5-8 with 3 HR (he likes Dodger
pitching I guess). According to Rays' GM Chuck Lamar, Young will be promoted to
AAA Durham very soon. Makes sense with these numbers: .335/.394/.581, 16 HR, 22
SB."
Again, Ryan Howard is the runnerup, followed
here by Gaby Hernandez NYN, he of the 9-inning no-hitter,
Thomas Diamond, and Jeremy Hermida. Then, another
Ranger prospect - Edison Volquez :
" ... 6.) A fast-rising prospect for the Rangers,
Volquez threw a 9 inning, 3-hit shutout last time out. He has a 2.57 ERA in
three AA starts. He led the CAL league in K's before his promotion."
Edwin Jackson LA continues to top the Who's
Not list with Ian Stewart COL a deserving runnerup :
" ... 2.) You have to wonder if he's nursing an
injury because this is a kid that put up a 900+ OPS in each of his first two
full seasons before getting hurt and appearing to be a shell of his former self
since he started this season. He's hitting just .223 and his struggles extend to
the fielding side as well where's he's making errors at an annual clip of around
50."
M's exercising caution with their prized SP prospect :
" ... Felix Hernandez missed his last
scheduled start with Tacoma because of what was diagnosed as mild bursitis in
his right shoulder. The 19-year-old is scheduled for a second MRI early this
week, which the club hopes will indicate the seriousness of the injury."
(Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
Dodgers' Greg Miller still on the shelf, no timetable for return :
" ... Dodgers had hoped
to get Miller to an affiliate in June, but the supplemental first-round pick in
2002 had another setback and his timetable was pushed back by about a month.
"(We) got real excited three weeks ago when he threw in an extended game," farm
director Terry Collins said. "He threw 94 (mph) and all of a sudden his shoulder
started to bother him again and we shut him down. He's back in the bullpen, and
we're hoping that perhaps by the end of July he's going to pitch in a game some
place." ... "Dr. (Frank) Jobe explained to me that this is going to
happen," Collins said of Miller's setbacks during rehab. "We're talking about a
guy who hasn't pitched in two years, but we feel that Greg is still going to be
fine." (Baseball America)

eight starts for the B-Mets at the end of 2004, leads the Eastern League in wins
and ERA, posting 8-1, 1.87 marks. The University of Southern California alum is
also third in the EL in strikeouts (77) and fifth in innings pitched (86 2/3)."
(Binghamton Mets)

seven-inning shutout and the most dominant performance by an IL hurler last

his ERA to 3.24, which is tied for 7th in the International League. The
24-year-old Maine is in his fourth professional season after being selected in
the sixth round of the 2002 draft by Baltimore." (International League)
Leo Daigle CHA " ... It
may be best to just assume Daigle has won the Carolina League Offensive Player
of the Week award unless otherwise indicated. The Winston-Salem first baseman
put together another outrageous week to earn the honors for the third
consecutive time and the fourth time in 10 weeks. Daigle's three home runs
didn't quite measure up to the seven he hit in the previous week, but he did bat
.556 while driving in 16 runs in six games ... Not only does Daigle
currently lead the Carolina League in all three Triple Crown categories, he's
also making a serious bid for the overall Minor League Triple Crown. He is tied
for the home run lead with 23, ranks fifth in average at .370 and has 11 more
RBIs (80) than anyone else in the Minors."

hitting raised his season average to .330, which is 10th in the league. He also
leads the Oaks in homers (11) and RBIs (40)."
Bryan
Smith, Baseball Analysts, on Jonathan Broxton's switch to the pen :
" ... With the Dodgers flush in starting pitching
prospect, and Broxton not separating himself from the pack, a move could be
afforded. The Bull has a big fastball too, and better yet, a good breaking ball
on top of that. Put it together and what do you got? A reliever. Adding fuel to
the fire, Broxton's velocity increased in short stints, reportedly from 92-93 to
95-97. This is a nearly impossible happening to see coming, rather just an
answer to a farm director's prayers. Who would have known that Francisco
Rodriguez would take off when dropping his pitch count? Or to an even larger
extent, Eric Gagne, the quintessential starter-turned-reliever story?"
BJ
Upton & Justin Orenduff are among those featured in this week's
prospect report by Zach Chalifour, RotoTimes :
" ... Orenduff has made a
lot of progress towards getting out from underneath the shadow of the many other
elite Los Angeles prospects. Another 2004 first-round draft pick, Orenduff was
left off of the radar screen by many, but he's already proven why he was a
first-rounder. At High-A Vero Beach, the 22-year-old made 12 starts before he
was recently promoted to Double-A Jacksonville... tallied 60 innings in his
starts, going 5-3 with a 2.24 ERA and 81 strikeouts. Additionally, he allowed
just 35 hits - good for an outstanding .170 oppBA."
" ... While he undoubtedly still has
one of the brightest futures of any young player in the game, the hype
surrounding Upton has subsided a great deal this season as many fantasy general
managers patiently wait for the Tampa Bay shortstop to return to the Devil Rays
... his defense has remained a serious issue, prompting the Rays to send
the 20-year-old back to Triple-A Durham, where he could focus more on his
defense before returning to the major leagues. Upton has continued to do well
with the bat and on the bases... but he's committed 27 errors ...
until the Devil Rays commit one way or another, rumors will continue to circle
regarding the possibility of a position change. Assuming current Tampa Bay
second baseman Nick Green continues to cool off, Upton will probably make his
return to the Devil Rays sometime this summer before finally joining the
starting lineup for good."

minimum 27 batters, allowing just a single in a 9-0 shutout. Diamond (9-0)
struck out 14 and walked none to remain unbeaten on the season. Only a
third-inning base hit by Jared Price spoiled his bid for a perfect-game. Price
was later picked off at first base, however, by catcher Justin Hatcher to end
the inning. Diamond improved his ERA to a California League-best 1.99. His 101
strikeouts are also tops in the league." (Bakersfield Californian)

a euphoric Hernandez (5-1) said after the game. "But once I knew that coach was

getting groundballs and getting in and out of innings."... Hernandez threw

Baseball America on Eric Patterson 2B CHn :
" ... We checked in with an American
League scout to get his take ... On Patterson, the younger brother of Corey, who
leads the Midwest League in batting (.366) and on-base percentage (.443) in his
pro debut after signing late last summer out of Georgia Tech as an eighth-round
pick: Hes played three years at a major program, so Id like to see him face
some better pitching, but thats not his fault. I do like his approach. He waits
for his pitch, and when he gets it, he goes after it. He can get into a rut
where he tries to hit for more power, but when he trusts his hands, he uses all
the fields and is much more productive. Defensively, hes good enough but
nothing special, and he has above-average speed but is not a burner. So in the
end you have a second baseman who can hit for average, but without much power
and he plays average defense. Thats more of an occasional starter/utility guy
for me as opposed to an everyday player for a first-division club.
