If not Hanley Ramirez, maybe Jed Lowrie ?

" ... “I got drafted as a second baseman,” said Lowrie. “But the day of the draft when (the Red Sox) called me they said they were going to try me at short because I was a shortstop in high school. “... Lowrie, a switch hitter, hasn't let the switch in positions affect his production at the plate. Heading into last night's game against Williamsport, Lowrie, the No. 3 hitter in the Spinners' order, was batting .318 (28-for-88) with 2 homers, 6 doubles, 14 runs scored and 18 RBI. The majesty of Lowrie's play at shortstop isn't in the number of highlight reel plays he makes. Rather it's his fundamental flamboyance. Lowrie had only committed two errors in 21 games prior to last night. “So far, so good,” said Spinner manager Luis Alicea. “He looks really good. He makes every play. He makes the tough plays. And he makes the routine plays. “He played some shortstop in high school, so we felt he could play there. We'll see how well he can play there for the future. He's a good athlete.”  (Lowell Sun)

Jose Capellan MIL showing fine form in the pen :

" ... Capellan went into relief during mid-June and has responded with 27 strikeouts in 27+ innings. He has five saves, a 1-1 record and a 1.32 ERA in 19 appearances. "He's adapted well to his new role," said Gord Ash, assistant general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, during a recent visit to Greer Stadium. "When we got him, a lot of people thought his best role was the 'pen. "We felt we needed to exhaust the opportunity to use him as a starter, but we had the hole there. If a player isn't comfortable in a role, isn't maximizing in a role … it became obvious his preference was to pitch out of the 'pen, and it's obviously been a good move." The switch to the bullpen comes a year after Capellan enjoyed a stellar season as a starter. In 2004, he won 14 games at three different minor league levels with a 2.32 ERA ... But he didn't get off to quite the same start this spring. And it may have been mental as much as anything. "He came in with it in the back of his mind that he was going to the 'pen," said Reid Nichols, Milwaukee's director of player development. "He was wanting to do that. It makes sense to try, so we decided to do that. "He's done a good job. His pitches are a little more crisp. He's a little more into what he's doing. There's a little more passion there."  (Nashville Tennessean)

Brandon Sing CHN named the Southern League's Player of the Month :

" ... Sing hit .366 with nine home runs and 22 RBI in 26 games played during the month of July ...  For the season, Sing is batting .298 with 23 home runs and 63 RBI in 100 games played. His 23 home runs leads the Southern League, and his slugging percentage of .590 leads the league as well. He also ranks fourth in on-base percentage (.411) and second in extra-base hits (50). Baseball America rates Sing the 15th best prospect in the Cubs' organization." (Southern League)

18-year-old switch THROWER a hit with fans in the Northwest League :

" ... Pablo Sandoval ...  catchy way his name unfolds from the stadium's public address announcer -- Paaabloooo Saaaaandooovallllll! -- certainly helps. But also the way he plays the game -- that ears-pinned-back, mile-a-minute, never-stop style -- is what really gets the fans in a lather. Oh, and he's second on the team with a .343 batting average and holds a .477 slugging and .384 on-base percentages going into play Friday. He also has 10 doubles, three home runs and 23 runs batted in (second on the team; first baseman Will Thompson is first), while only striking out 19 times in 172 at bats ...  And get this, Sandoval's canon of an arm that he displays almost every night from the hot corner is not his natural throwing arm. He was born a lefty and learned to throw ambidextrously while goofing around back home with his brother. He's a switch thrower ...  signed as a free agent by the San Francisco Giants at the age of 16 ...  now is in his first full season of full-fledged professional baseball ...  "The scouts signed a bat," said Jack Hiatt, Giants director of player development. "He doesn't look like an athlete, but, by golly, he is. And he sure can hit." At 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Sandoval isn't a pure physical specimen, and he was originally signed as a catcher. Now he lets the results speak for themselves." (Salem Statesman)

In Zimmerman, I see a mix between Gary Gaetti, Tim Wallach (who hit a similar .393 at a big program his last year of college) and Graig Nettles at the Major League level. Gold Gloves, a few random huge seasons, and an overall solid career. Not to mention, in Zimmerman's case...the first National true fan favorite/hero."

Zach Chalifour, RotoTimes, on Dustin Pedroia and Jered Weaver :

" ...  Pedroia ... often been rumored to take over Boston's starting job at second base. The 21-year-old began the season strong at Double-A Portland but has since struggled after moving up to Triple-A Pawtucket, temporarily cooling off the rumors of him heading to Fenway Park in the near future. Pedroia hit .324 with eight home runs and 40 RBI in 66 games at Portland, but has just one home run and a .239 average through 19 games with Pawtucket. Given the horrendous strikeout rate of the now-injured Mark Bellhorn, Pedroia's plate discipline is even more encouraging. Between the two levels this season he has tallied 43 walks while striking out just 32 times."

" ...  Weaver struggled in his first couple of outings at High-A Rancho Cucamonga, but those have been the only growing pains he has encountered. Following a series of outstanding starts, Weaver moved to Double-A Arkansas after just seven starts in the California League ...   has since done well in two starts for Arkansas, receiving a no-decision and a win in 10 total innings of work. Weaver has given up just three earned runs - good for a 2.70 ERA - and he has recorded eight strikeouts while walking three ... could easily get his first taste of action with the Angels next summer."

Scott Rex, OnDeck, updates his prospect list for the South Atlantic League :

CLE righty Dan Denham and WAS 3B Kory Casto among those saluted for July efforts :

" ... Denham has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of July. The right-handed hurler had an amazing month for the Aeros, winning four out of his five starts ...  striking out 36 batters and walking only two in 35 innings of work. The 6'0", 195 lb. hurler had an ERA of 0.77 during the month ...  promoted to Triple-A following his last start with the Aeros on August 2nd, gave up only 23 hits to the 134 batters he faced during the month, holding opposing batters to a .180 batting average."  (Eastern League)

" ... Potomac third baseman Kory Casto was voted the Carolina League Player of the Month for July. Casto batted a team-best .413 in 28 games, along with a league-best 11 homers and 27 RBI ... tied for the league lead in extra-base-hits with 53 and he’s second in hits with 121. The 23-year-old Casto, who was drafted in the third round of the 2003 amateur draft ...  also named the top defensive prospect at third base in the Carolina League by Baseball America."  (Potomac News)

Bianchi's back.   KC Star rates the top hitting prospects in the Royals' system :

" ... 1. OF Billy Butler, High Desert: Was 20 for 38 in eight-game hitting streak before going zero for three on Wednesday. 2. 1B Justin Huber, Omaha: Was just one for 15 since promotion from Wichita before hitting two three-run doubles. 3. SS Jeff Bianchi, Rookie Arizona: Went two for four in first game back after missing two weeks because of lower-back pain. "

David Regan, RotoAmerica, goes Milledge, Verlander, Markakis as the top three prospects in the Eastern League :

" ... 1. Lastings Milledge ...  is probably the most toolsey player in the minors and unlike some (coughreggieabercrombiecough), he's actually produced. He still needs work on his plate discipline (3 walks to 86 AA at-bats) and base-running (caught 14 times out of 40 tries), but there's major (i.e. Beltran type) upside to this kid."

" ... 4. Jon Lester ... Theo Epstein's reluctance to part with Lester reportedly killed several potential deals this year. There's good reason for that: he's a hard-throwing lefty who's blowing away the competition in AA. 2.47 ERA, 131 K's in 116 2/3 IP. He's a keeper."

" ... 11. Michael Bourn ...One of the minors' more underrated prospects. Bourn has .380 OBP / 50 SB type potential in the bigs. Strikes out a bit more than you'd like but he can also draw a walk (52 in 105 games). Looks like a future Kenny Lofton."

Tigers' top pitching prospect taking a little time off :

" ... The Tigers gave Justin Verlander's right-shoulder condition a fancy description -- "minor posterior capsular inflammation caused by fatigue, no structural damage." But the translation is that he has a tired arm and needs to rest "10-14 days" before pitching again. Verlander, one of the Tigers' top prospects, came out of his start for Double-A Erie after three innings Tuesday night because his velocity was down. He said the shoulder felt tight ... Combining his starts at Lakeland and Erie, plus the two he's made for the Tigers, Verlander has pitched 130 innings this season."  (Detroit News)

Ryan Zimmerman, just two months after being drafted, could be in the WAS lineup.

" ... My preference, from my development heart, is '06," Bowden said prior to yesterday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I really don't want to do '05. But is he on my mind every hour on the hour? Yes." The mere possibility that Zimmerman, a third baseman who entered last night hitting .287 at Class AA Harrisburg, could be called up illustrates how significant the slide of third baseman Vinny Castilla has been ... Bowden said Zimmerman has played exceptionally at Harrisburg since getting off to a slow start. He has four homers and 17 RBI in 35 games, and is slugging .481 in that time. He could also spell Castilla defensively. "He's one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball -- right now," Bowden said."  (Washington Post)

John Sickels on Alex Romero MIN :

" ...  When top outfield prospects are discussed, Alex Romero's name doesn't come up that often. That may be a mistake ...  Moving up to Double-A New Britain this year, Romero has continued to hit for average at .300 in 108 games. But he has also set a career high with 12 homers, a career high with 26 doubles, and a career high with a .466 SLG. Those aren't awesome numbers, but they represent considerable improvement. His walk rate has slipped this year, but his other numbers are in line with previous seasons. At age 21, he still has lots of development time left, and he gives the Twins another intriguing option to consider in '06 and '07."

John Sickels, on Mitch Maier KC :

" ...  Since being promoted to Double-A in early June, Mitch Maier is hitting just .239/.272/.415. He does lead the minor leagues with 41 doubles ... But the good plate discipline that he showed in college seems to have vanished ... now in the outfield, and has adapted well enough to play center field on occasion. His arm is mediocre, but he runs very well for a former catcher and has enough range to handle center. But if he doesn't hit better than this, that won't matter ... When I saw him play for Wichita this past weekend, it looked like he was trying to pull everything for power, and this wasn't working well. It's not too late for him, but he has to return to what worked for him in college if he wants to play regularly, even for a weak team like Kansas City."

Scott Rex, OnDeck, has an update of his Midwest prospect chart :

 1. Mark McCormick, RHP, STL      6. Jeff Clement, C, SEA
 2. Homer Bailey, RHP, CIN        7. Javier Herrera, OF, OAK
 3. Ryan Harvey, OF, CHN          8. Matt Tuiasosopo, SS, SEA
 4. Carlos Gonzales, OF, ARZ      9. Sean Gallagher, RHP, CHN
 5. Travis Buck, OF, OAK         10. Eric Hurley, RHP, TEX

Dayn Perry, FoxSports, offers his picks as the top prospects in the NL East.  OF Jeremy Hermida FLO tops the list :

" ... Hermida in the lower rungs of the minors showed an outstanding command of the strike zone and an ability to hit for average ... the power has come. This year, Hermida, in his first taste of the high minors, is hitting .304 AVG/.467 OBP/.534 SLG with 94 walks and 41 extra-base hits on the season. That's a tremendous level of production for a 21-year-old in Double-A. At this juncture, he looks like a future MVP candidate at the highest level. Hermida's emerged as one of the handful of best prospects in the game."

" ... 7. Chuck James ... Talk about a breakout season. James last season posted good K rates and kept the ball in park, but he struggled with his control despite being older than his peer group at Low-A Rome. This season, however, James has harnessed his stuff and breezed through two levels. After a May promotion to AA-Mississippi, James has whiffed 96 batters and walked only 16 in 79.2 innings. To boot, he's also coughed up only four home runs. James' attitude has been questioned in the past, but his troubles seem far behind him."

Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld, on Nick Markakis BAL :

" ...  hit .300/.379/.480 with 12 HR ... for Single-A Frederick before being moved up to Double-A this week. He’s homered in his first two games at Bowie. When ranking Markakis atop the Orioles’ top 10 at the start of the season, I started that he “lacks the power potential to become a superstar.” That’s probably still the case, but whereas I was thinking 20-25 homers per year then, 25-30 seems well within reach now. The left-handed hitter is pulling the ball with more authority this year, and he’s able to keep his average up by still going the other way on occasion. Defensively, Markakis projects as a very good right fielder ...I see him having Cliff Floyd-type offensive upside."

Sam Geaney, Cal Leaguers, offers a scouting report on COL catcher Chris Ianetta :

" ...  gets better every time he plays. Stocky build, not esp. athletic ... Massive legs. Built similar to Ramon Hernandez. Short swing lends itself to clean contact. Sets up a bit wide with pinched knees. Hds @ shoulder with back elbow up. Generates avg batspd with gd whip from snappy wrists ... Solid avg raw should play in the 10-15HR range/yr @ ML level. Gd all around player without any flash. Chance to become solid everyday catcher."

It was just an inning, but a big step for a TB righthander :

" ... Tuesday was a mighty hurdle in pitcher Jeff Niemann's recovery from a shoulder injury ...  made his first appearance in almost three months, throwing a shutout inning of relief  ...  "We'll see how his arm reacts and play it day-by-day," Biscuits pitching coach Xavier Hernandez said. "(Today) will be the real key." Niemann, Tampa Bay's first-round draft pick last year, last pitched May 7 at Class A Visalia when shoulder inflammation shut him down. After going to the Devil Rays' extended spring training for rehabilitation, he joined the Biscuits after the All-Star break two weeks ago, but wasn't activated until just before Tuesday's game ...  "He came out pretty good," catcher Chairon Isenia said. "His fastball had a lot of life and he just came back from rehab. He'll do better than that when he gets going because it's all about confidence." The 6-foot-9 right-hander issued only a two-out walk. He threw 16 pitches, seven for strikes, according to the Biscuits' pitching charts. Niemann topped out at 94 mph and regularly sat in the low-90s with his fastball. "That lets me know the velocity is still there," Niemann said, "and (the injury) was nothing threatening."  (Montgomery Advertiser)

David Regan, RotoAmerica, has a mid-season update on his Top 100 prospect list -- Delmon Young, Felix Hernandez, Jeremy Hermida 1-2-3.

" ... 1. Delmon Young ...  breezed through the minors and not even a promotion to AAA this year has stopped his ascent. Has earned comparisons to Albert Belle, Vlad Guerrero, and Manny Ramirez."

" ... 4. Brandon Wood ...  Most likely the Minor League POY frontrunner. Offseason conditioning has resulted in a breakout (34 HR's!) that I sure didn't see coming. Let's see how he does in AA, outside the extreme hitters' CAL league."

" ... 25. Casey Kotchman ...  I'm still convinced his sweet stroke will yield 25-30 HR power and combined with a .400 OBP and Gold Glove defense, he still has All-Star caliber upside.  Red hot lately as well."

" ... 32. Russell Martin ...  One of the minors' more underrated prospects, getting lost in a deep Dodger organization. Martin has solid defensive skills, plate discipline to burn (think .400+ OBP upside in the majors) and if he can hit 10-15 HR's, he'll be an All-Star."

" ... 66. Miguel Montero ... The Dbacks seem pretty set at catcher with Chris Snyder and Koyie Hill, but this kid may be the best of the bunch. Really has come out of nowhere to hit .349/.403/.625 in A+ before being promoted to AA earlier this month. Just turned 22 and has a great future."

Stephen Drew takes over the top spot on Kevin Goldstein's  Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :

" ... The absolute definition of hitting the ground running, the 2004 first-round pick hit .389-10-39 in just 38 games for Lancaster, with more walks (26) than strikeouts (25)."

Kevin goes with a pair of lefties at No. 2 & No. 3 and an on-rushing Oriole at lucky 13 :

" ... 2. Chuck James ...  minor league leader in opponent batting average (.180), James doesn't give runners a free pass either, as evidenced by a 34-2 strikeout-walk ratio in July. 3. Francisco Liriano ... With so little movement at the trade deadline, it will be prospects who may play a major role down the stretch. At 5-1, 1.83 in eight Triple-A starts with just 27 hits allowed in 54 innings, the 21-year-old Dominican could be a factor in the wild card race."

13. Nick Markakis ...  After all but sweeping the Carolina League Best Tools list (and the former two-way college star could have had a shot at Best Fastball as well), Markakis went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in his Double-A debut."

John Sickels on Ryan Zimmerman WAS :

" ...  the Sally League was not a challenge, so they quickly moved him up to Harrisburg in the Double-A Eastern League. Zimmerman's transition from college ball to Double-A has gone very well: .296/.343/.496 in 34 games, including 13 doubles already and 4 homers in 125 at-bats. His strike zone judgment hasn't been great: he's drawn only 8 walks, but his strikeouts (22) aren't out of bounds, and he showed good discipline in college ... Zimmerman is living up to expectations, and looks like an excellent investment at this point. The doubles are a sign of additional home run power to come."

Zach Chalifour, RotoTimes, with notes on a couple of prospects who'll get new opportunities :

" ... Yorman Bazardo ... hard-throwing pitcher who was rated as the third-best prospect in the Marlins organization by Baseball America and has had yet another solid season in the minors. Bazardo struggled in his one outing for the Marlins in late May, but he has the potential to become the steal of this year's deadline deals."

" ... Jesse Foppert ...  There is much debate whether Foppert still has the high ceiling that he did before undergoing Tommy John surgery last summer. He will not be back at full strength until this fall at the earliest, so next spring will be the best gauge as to where his long-term stock stands. As of now, however, not only have the reports on Foppert been very positive, but his strikeout totals at this point in his recovery are also very encouraging."

Quite a turnaround for Gavin Floyd PHI after such a disappointing season :

" ... Showing the best curveball he’s had since being sent down to the Red Barons, Floyd was masterful Sunday. Through eight innings, he shutout the Rochester Red Wings, allowing the Red Barons to coast to a 9-1 win at Lackawanna County Stadium. “Having never seen Gavin Floyd until this year, I could tell he had a good curveball, but I’d only see bits and pieces of it,” manager Gene Lamont said. “I think that today was probably the best curveball he’s had for us.” ...  Ever since he breezed through the St. Louis Cardinals lineup on April 9 in his first start of the year, Floyd has been a shell of the 22-year-old, top-notch prospect who seemed to be in the big leagues to stay. Command and consistency — or lack there of — became Floyd’s greatest weaknesses ...  Floyd seemed to get better as the day went on, retiring 17 of the last 18 batters he faced, including the last 11. His curveball, which had been by far his most troubling pitch, was back. After rediscovering his grip during bullpen sessions leading up to the game, Floyd said he felt comfortable with the pitch for the first time in a while."  (Scranton Times)

Stephen Drew ARZ one step closer to MLB.

" ...  Drew's promotion to Double-A Tennessee in the Southern League was announced after Sunday's 6-5 JetHawks victory ...  Drew was 1 for 3 with a double in Sunday's game, extending his hitting streak to 12 games ... hit safely in 34 of 38 games with Lancaster, batting .389 (58 for 147) with 10 homers and 38 RBI. He's been the JetHawks' everyday shortstop since he was assigned to Lancaster in early June after ending a highly publicized yearlong holdout with the parent Arizona Diamondbacks by signing a major-league contract worth $5.5 million plus incentives. "(Drew) came as advertised," JetHawks manager Bill Plummer said. "He showed he could hit, and he showed he could field. He's a great player."   (LA Daily News)

SD not finding an abundance of choices in looking for a young catcher :

" ... Should the Padres choose to fill their catching void via trade for a young prospect, the top three candidates appear to be Kelly Shoppach of Boston, Gerald Laird of Texas and Josh Willingham of Florida. Shoppach, a second-round pick in 2001, is hitting .260 with 21 homers and 63 RBIs at Triple-A Pawtucket. He is said to have great catching and leadership skills. He's blocked at the big-league level by Jason Varitek. Laird was a second-round pick by the A's in 1998 and was traded to the Rangers in 2002. He's hitting .291 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs at Triple-A Oklahoma. He has suffered several hand injuries in his career. Willingham might be the best hitting prospect in the Marlins organization, though he has been on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his left forearm since June 30 and likely won't play before September. He batted .338 with 19 homers and 54 RBIs at Triple-A Albuquerque before the Marlins promoted him. A corner infielder, he was converted to catching in 2002 and scouts say he's a natural with a great work ethic. His big-league path is blocked by Paul Lo Duca. Scouts, however, say none are worth what it would cost the Padres ---- relievers like Akinori Otsuka or Scott Linebrink."  (North County Times)

Shortstop Ian Desmond, 2004 3rd rounder, opening eyes in the WAS system :

" ... A lot of shortstops have range. Desmond has something else: an almost innate ability to dazzle and somehow make it all look routine ...  considered one of the top position player prospects in the Washington Nationals organization. "I have high expectations," Desmond said. "If the ball is anywhere around me, I'm going for it, but that's just part of being a shortstop. You're supposed to be a leader. " ...  He looks -- and plays -- like someone much older and more experienced. Derek Jeter comes to mind. After watching Desmond hit .306 in 20 games for the Nationals during spring training, Washington General Manager Jim Bowden glowingly compared him to the Yankees' captain. "It's a compliment. You always want to be compared to someone great, but it's a little much," Desmond said with a sheepish smile. "I have a long way to go." Though he won't turn 20 until September, Desmond is way ahead of schedule. Washington manager Frank Robinson has said more than once that the second-year pro is already good enough defensively to play in the major leagues ...  hitting .260 overall ... at Potomac. "It's such a long shot for that to happen. All I can do is work hard. That's what I'm all about." Desmond understands that what he does with the bat will determine how soon he arrives in Washington."   (Potomac News)

Jason Collette, RotoJunkie, reflecting upon a pair of premium prospects who were not on the move, as rumoured :

" ..The Mets are sitting in the same spot where the Expos were when Minaya gave up the only talent the Expos had to rent Bartolo Colon; maybe he has learned from his mistakes. Petit and Milledge are the types of talent the system has been missing ... Milledge is a 5 tool talent who is right up there near the top of the outfield prospect list as well as the overall list. The 20 year old is currently in AA after starting the season in High A; he’s his numbers are .312/.359./.415. Over the last two seasons, he is at .313/.360/.462. Petit is a control freak who has a strikeout to walk ratio of 5.8 this season and for his minor league career, he has a 2.61 ERA, a 5.6 strikeout to walk ratio, and has held batters to a .200 average."

Among those saluted as Players/Pitchers of the Week, from MiLB.com :

" ... Carolina League Jarrod Saltalamacchia ...  hit .429 while accumulating four doubles, his first triple of the year and a pair of homers. On Sunday, the Braves' 2003 first-round pick went 3-for-5 with two doubles a homer and three RBIs ... On the season, the 6-foot-4 switch-hitter is third in the league in hitting, at .316."

" ... Midwest League Alexi Casilla ... has moved around a lot in his first two years as a pro, playing in three different leagues over a two-month period in 2004 and three different leagues during the first half of this season. But now that he's settled in at Cedar Rapids, he's faring quite well. The 5-foot-9 middle infielder had multiple hits in all six of his starts, extending his career-long hitting streak to 17 games. Over that stretch, Casilla has hit .516 (32-for-62) and has raised his average from .273 to .335."

" ... Pioneer League Charlie Fermaint ... might have been the Offensive Player of the Week in two different leagues last week if he'd gotten another game or two in the Sally League after his promotion. The 19-year-old Puerto Rican hit home runs in four of five games for Helena before being sent to West Virginia, where he went 5-for-10 with a double, a homer and six RBIs in his first two games. The 2003 fourth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers left the Pioneer League as the circuit's top home run hitter (12) and also ranked first in slugging percentage (.744) and runs (46), third in RBIs (32) and extra-base hits (23), fourth in stolen bases (11) and sixth in average (.364)."

" ... Florida State League Davis Romero ...  absolutely dominant ... 21-year-old Panamanian struck out a career-high 11 batters in seven shutout innings against Daytona on July 26, giving up three hits and one walk in a 5-1 win. He was just as good against Jupiter on Sunday, one-hitting the Hammerheads through eight innings while walking two and striking out seven in a 1-0 win. The slightly built southpaw has won five of his last six decisions and has thrown seven or more shutout innings in three of his five starts since being moved back into the starting rotation."

John Sickels on Ryan Harvey CHN :

" ...  The sixth-overall pick in the 2003 draft, out of high school in Florida, Harvey is having a successful full-season debut, and has shown he is recovered from the injuries which limited his playing time in '03 and '04. He has the best raw power in the Cubs farm system ... BB/K/AB ratio is 19/91/349: a below average walk rate, combined with a high strikeout rate, more than one-K per game ... At age 20, he has youth on his side, which is good because I think he will be a one-step-at-a-time type prospect. Fantasy-wise, he represents a high risk/high reward option in most leagues, intriguing but a long way from being ready to help."

Brandon Wood ANA, a plan and sticking to it :

" ... I see a guy that's putting things together," Quakes manager Ty Boykin said. "I see a guy who is hitting all pitches. I see a guy who has a plan. I see a guy who is working hard." So what's changed in a year? According to Wood, the biggest improvements he has made this season is that he's seeing pitches better and not missing when he gets a pitch to hit. Wood was also primarily a fastball hitter last season. This season, he's hitting all types of pitches. "That's just maturing as a hitter and learning the strike zone," he said. The improvement hasn't just been since last year. Boykin has watched Wood grow as a player over the course of the season, the skipper's first with him. Boykin said Wood improved his footwork defensively, is working counts better and studying pitchers more than in the beginning of the season. Most importantly, Boykin said, Wood learned from his mistakes. "I see him doing a lot of things now that I didn't see him doing in spring training," Boykin said. "To me, that shows a lot of maturity, a lot of dedication, a lot of focus. "I haven't seen anybody come through the system at his age, with his ability, to put things together and stay focused throughout with all the media and everything that's been said. He doesn't worry about that stuff. "He has one thing on his mind, and that's to play this game every night to his full potential. And that's what he does."   (North County Times)
