A D'Rays starter and a MON CF the best of the SAL for the week :

" ... Tony Peguero ... nothing short of perfect last week, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He allowed just seven hits and held opponents to a .146 batting average  ...pitched seven strong innings, allowing just five hits, striking out five and walking one en route to a 3-0 victory over Rome last Friday night ... the lanky right-hander was even more devastating Thursday night in Charleston's 5-0 shutout of Columbus. Peguero went the distance (seven innings) in the second game of a double-header, yielding just two hits. He fanned five and did not allow a walk to raise his record on the year to 6-4."

" ... Batter of the Week Rogearvin Bernadina  ... 20-year-old ... led the South Atlantic League in batting (.529 - 9 for-17), slugging percentage (1.176) and RBI (12), clubbing two home runs and driving in five runs ... raised his record to .281 with four home runs and 46 RBI, one shy of the club high."

Shortstop Tommy Whiteman up to AAA :

" ... Whiteman, one of the Astros' top prospects, hit .336 with eight home runs and 45 RBIs for Round Rock. He will play shortstop ... "Whitey deserved that," Round Rock manager Jackie Moore said. "He was having a heck of a first half." (Houston Chronicle)

Phils with an on-charging slugger, with no place to play :

" ... 1B Ryan Howard  ... the Florida State League MVP last year, is making a run at winning the Eastern League MVP in his first Double-A season. The only thing that may stop this imposing left-handed slugger is being included in a deal next month that could bring the parent club help at the trade deadline. Even the Phillies can't deny Howard, a 6-4, 230-pounder, seemingly has no future in Philadelphia due to the presence of some guy named Jim Thome. "Ryan understands that if he's a prospect and puts up big numbers, there are 29 other [major-league] clubs out there, and there will be opportunities," Arbuckle said. "And if you've got a top prospect and don't have a place for him, he'll bring you a very attractive piece in return." Meantime, Howard is going about his business of hitting tape-measure home runs ... "Ryan's got incredible power, especially to left-center, and he's continuing to grow as a hitter," R-Phils Manager Greg Legg said. "He even chokes up with two strikes." (Randy Miller, phillyBurbs.com)

DET with a starter waiting in the wings for another MLB opportunithy :

" ...  Left-hander Wilfredo Ledezma ...  One year after baseball rules vaulted him in the majors prematurely, Ledezma is dominating at Double-A Erie. If the Eastern League season had ended Friday afternoon, Ledezma would have won its pitching triple crown. He led the league in wins (8-2) and ERA (2.21), and he was tied for the lead in strikeouts. "I've never been a guy with pitching who's had a problem jumping guys from Double-A to the big leagues," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I've had a lot of guys be very successful that way." Dombrowski said recently that when Ledezma "gets his curveball ready, in our estimation he'll be ready to pitch in the big leagues." ...  Assistant general manager Al Avila saw Ledezma's most recent start, in which he pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run. "He's pitching well and making progress," Avila said. "He's not far away. He needs work on his breaking pitches, but he has made great strides and should be ready in a reasonable amount of time." (Detroit Free Press)

Twins AA notes from New Britain Herald :

" ... Starter Scott Baker has given up just 28 hits and nine walks in 50 1/3 innings since arriving from Class A Fort Myers on May 18. Overall, Baker is 8-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 14 starts this season with 15 walks and 80 strikeouts."

" ... J.D. Durbin, who pitched in his second simulated game during batting practice Friday, will be activated in time to pitch in the second game of a doubleheader in New Hampshire Monday ... Although Durbin underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder May 21, he was hitting 94 mph on the speed gun consistently Friday afternoon."

" ... Throw out Boof Bonser’s nightmare against Trenton June 17 (3 innings, 11 hits, 10 runs) and he’s put together numbers commensurate to his being a first-round draft pick (Giants, 2000). Other than that ERA buster, Bonser is 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA since mid-May."

John Sickels, ESPN.com, on Ryan Sweeney CHA :

" ... Sweeney was a second-round pick last year out of high school in Iowa. He looked great this spring, and the White Sox were confident enough in his ability to push him all the way to the Carolina League, quite a jump for a high school kid from the Upper Midwest. Sweeney is hitting .252/.313/.336, very weak numbers for an outfielder. But again, he's very young for the level, and he isn't striking out very much, just 39 times in 70 games, 274 at-bats, a sign that he isn't totally overmatched. He'll need time to develop, but I'm cautiously optimistic about his chances in the long run."

Maybe in a couple of weeks :

" ... Right-hander Rafael Soriano, who has been on the DL since May 12 with a tender right elbow, is targeting a return just after the All-Star break. He tossed on the side for the first time last night and said the soreness is gone. Soriano will be examined today and might be cleared for more intensive work." (Seattle Times)

" ... Right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer, the Padres' first-round pick in the 2003 draft (fourth overall) has been promoted to Triple-A Portland. Stauffer started the season with high Single-A Lake Elsinore (2-0, 1.78 ERA in six starts) before going to Double-A Mobile on May 10. He went 3-2 with a 2.68 ERA for the BayBears and was selected to play in the Futures All-Star Game." (SD Union Tribune)

John Sickels, ESPN.com, on the Mets' Ian Bladergroen and his take on the Rangers' phenom Ian Kinsler :

" ... Bladergroen is hitting .337/.397/.598 for the Capital City Bombers in the Sally League ... He is a left-handed hitting first baseman/DH with big-time power potential from the left side. His plate discipline is only adequate (25 walks, 52 strikeouts in 261 at-bats), and there are some concerns about his ability to make contact ...  against more advanced pitching ...  a big guy at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, and at age 21 is neither young nor old for the Sally League. He doesn't have a great glove, but if he hits they will find a spot for him."

" ... Kinsler is one of the best stories in the minors this year ... has great plate discipline, power, and is a reasonably good defensive shortstop. So, who the heck is this guy? Kinsler was drafted out of the University of Missouri. I saw him play for the Tigers, and he struck me as a decent-enough athlete with a bit of pop in his bat, someone who would make a solid mid-to-late round pick, which is what everyone else thought too ... I haven't seen Kinsler play yet this year, but I hope to see him in a swing around the Texas League soon. Is it a fluke? I want to see him in person before making a full assessment. My gut reaction at this point is that there is probably some flukiness and luck involved here, yes, but that Kinsler is a legitimately very good prospect and perhaps an excellent one. Once I see him in person I will make a firmer decision."

Zach Chalifour, The Roto Times, on Ian Snell PIT :

" ...While the likes of fellow Pittsburgh prospects Bryan Bullington, John Van Benschoten, and Sean Burnett stole the spotlight from Snell coming into the season, the 22-year-old is currently making a serious run at stepping front-and-center into the Pirates' spotlight. Snell has been dominant of late at Double-A Altoona, and currently boasts very solid overall numbers on the season. In 14 starts and 79 innings, the high-school-draftee has posted a 5-3 record with a 3.19 ERA, and has allowed just 81 hits and 20 walks to post an average 1.27 WHIP while also recording 67 strikeouts. Snell has really come alive as of late and is nearing a promotion to Triple-A Nashville, and if he can continue to pitch like he has in a recent dominant outings, he could make it to the majors this season."

JJ Cooper Baseball America with some good news for Greg Miller owners :

" ... Dodgers lefthander Greg Miller is progressing well in his rehab in Vero Beach. After having his shoulder scoped this spring, Miller is currently long tossing at 100 feet in his throwing program. "He still has some tendinitis in his bursa sac," scouting director Logan White said Friday. "With him, we're just taking baby steps at this point and we certainly aren't rushing anything. He's a little frustrated by that because he wants to get back out there as soon as possible. But we'll see how he progresses and go from there."

COL pitching phenom still a few weeks from returning :

" ... Ubaldo Jimenez, the 20-year-old flame-throwing, Class-A right-hander, remains in Denver finishing up treatment on a back injury. Jimenez, whom some consider the Rockies' top pitching prospect, has been sidelined five weeks. He's expected to resume his season around mid-July." (Denver Post)

Once a premiere pitching prospect, Brad Baisley starts over in Low-A in the Yankee system :

" ... At 6-foot-9, Baisley is the tallest player in franchise history. The right-hander was 0-3 with a 4.79 earned-run average in nine games with Vero Beach of the high-A Florida State League this season. His seven-year minor-league career includes stops in the double-A Eastern League." (Battle Creek Yankees)

NEW YORK-PENN -- Wow, BAL's Luis Ramirez fanned 15 in five innings :

" ... Luis Ramirez set a minor league record by striking out 12 straight batters, and didn't get a win to show for it. Ramirez, a right-hander in the Baltimore Orioles' organization, had 15 strikeouts in five innings for the Class A Aberdeen IronBirds on Wednesday night. Working on a pitch count, he was removed after the fifth inning of Aberdeen's 6-3 loss to the Jamestown Jammers. The major league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, set by Tom Seaver of the New York Mets on April 22, 1970 ...  lifted after 76 pitches -- 58 for strikes -- because the IronBirds were limiting him to 78 pitches ...  a non-drafted free agent from Curacao. Before this season, he pitched two years of Gulf Coast rookie ball in the Orioles' system. His career record is 8-5 with a 2.85 ERA." (Associated Press)

Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld, on Jeff Salazar COL & Jose Capellan ATL :

" ...  Salazar has a chance to be something special, especially from a fantasy standpoint. Drafted in the eighth round out of Oklahoma State two years ago, Salazar started to receive some attention after hitting .284/.387/.527 for Single-A Asheville in 2003. He missed out on a 30-30 season by one home run and two stolen bases. Salazar has put up even better numbers in the California League this year, batting .348/.417/.599 and stealing 16 bases (in 18 attempts) in 287 AB ...  could hit 20 homers while playing in Coors Field. He’s fast enough to play center field and swipe 20-30 bases per year in the majors. He has an above average walk rate and doesn’t strike out very much. The only negative is that Salazar is already 23. He needs to be in Double-A right now."

" ...  Capellan, signed out of the Dominican Republic in 1998, didn’t emerge as a top prospect until recently because he missed much of 2001 and all of 2002 following Tommy John surgery ...  sent down to Single-A Myrtle Beach to act as a starter. He went 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA there and is currently 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA at Double-A Greenville. All together, he has given up 51 hits and posted a 94/16 K/BB ratio in 68 1/3 IP ... has little difficulty throwing in the mid-90s. He’s hit 101 on the gun, but he usually works in the 94-97 mph range as a starter ... going to have to demonstrate that he can hold up under a starter’s workload. I think that might be his biggest difficulty ...  Even though he has terrific upside as a starting pitcher, it’s possible that he’ll end up as a closer. He may not be capable of pitching 180-200 innings in a season."

Finally, a little respect for COL SS Clint Barmes.  Troy E. Renck, Denver Post "

" ...  Barmes, the shortstop of the future, resides in Colorado Springs. The Rockies, gearing toward 2006, are leasing the National League West basement. It would seem like the perfect time to promote Barmes, making him an apprentice under Royce Clayton. Barmes, after all, is running out of things to accomplish in the minor leagues. He has a .348 average with 10 homers, numbers that have earned him a Triple-A all-star berth. "He's played well, but we don't want to rush the process with him," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. The Rockies, nonetheless, are preparing Barmes for a promotion. He began playing some second base recently, a move that would make it easier to squeeze him into the lineup periodically if the team finds a trade partner for Denny Hocking. Before the club signed Clayton, there was talk Barmes would open the season as the big-league starter. Clayton's presence, if nothing else, provided Barmes a chance to mature in the batter's box. He has impressed the Rockies with a new approach, shedding his image as a pull hitter. "He's using the field a lot better," said Bill Geivett, the Rockies' director of player development. "He's doing everything we have asked."

Jeremy Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on Scott Olsen FLO (A+, Florida State League)  :

" ... At 6'4" 170, LHP Scott Olsen is a hard-throwing 20 year-old with plenty of projection left ...  Through 12 starts covering 60.1 innings, Olsen is 2-5 with a 3.43 ERA and a 31/63 walk to strikeout ratio ... drafted by the Marlins in the 6th round of the 2002 draft more or less as a project ... Two years later and the Marlins pitching coaches have done wonders for Olsen. He's hitting the mid-90s with his fastball and now owns a very good slider. His command is improving, though still average. His delivery mechanics have been corrected and there is still more projection ... Olsen is clearly the best left-handed pitcher in the entire system. He's still 2-2 1/2 years away from Florida, but he could be a dominating frontline starter in the future."

Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com, on the prospects in the Beltran trade :

" ... Mark Teahen ... No. 39 overall in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft ... He started to show some extra-base power in 2003, his first full season. Playing for Double-A Modesto, Teahen had just three homers, but doubled 27 times and drove in 71 runs. He's progressed even more this year, with a total of 23 doubles and six homers between two levels ... Teahen knows how to get on base, with a .361 OBP coming into 2004, then posted a .419 mark with Midland and .383 so far with Sacramento. In the field, Teahan is good defensively, with decent range and a strong throwing arm."

" ... Mike Wood ...  In another organization, Mike Wood would be in the big leagues. So far in 2004, he's gone 11-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 15 starts during his second go-round with Triple-A Sacramento ...  10th rounder in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft went 9-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 16 starts last year before making his Major League debut with the A's, appearing in seven games. Wood is a softer-tossing version of Tim Hudson. Like Hudson, he throws a splitter and changeup and succeeds by keeping the ball down in the zone. He commands four pitches well, but doesn't blow the ball by anyone."

" ... John Buck ...  Signed when he was 17 (seventh round, 1998 First-Year Player Draft), it may seem like Buck's been around forever. But he won't turn 24 until July. He's matured into a physical presence, both behind the plate and at it. He's grown into his body very well and is strong and agile behind the dish ...  With his body (6-3, 210 pounds) and swing, he should hit with power. After hitting just two homers in his first taste of Triple-A last year, he's already got 12 with New Orleans in 2004. Overall, Buck is hitting .300 with 35 RBIs, a .368 OBP and .507 SLG. He hits hard line drives consistently and doesn't get fooled very often at the plate. Some scouts feel he's probably a 10-15 homer guy in the big leagues."

Craig Rutter, The Sports Network, with a report on the top first base prospects goes with Prince Fielder, James Loney and Jason Stokes at 1-2-3.  CLE's Michael Aubrey just makes the list at No. 10 :

" ... A first round pick, 11th overall, in 2003, Aubrey lived up to the high expectations placed on him by tearing up the South Atlantic League in his first year. He hit .348 with 13 doubles, 5 home runs, and 19 RBI in 38 games. This season has been no different for the sweet swinging lefty, as he leads the Carolina League in batting average (.339) and RBI (60). Aubrey's .550 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the league while his .438 on-base percentage has him second. He is projected as a .300 hitter with 35 doubles and 15-20 home runs in the majors and has Gold Glove potential. If he continues at this pace he will be in the majors in no time."

Little more on SD's Vern Sherry :

" ... Were you nervous, Vern Sterry? "What's there to be nervous about," Sterry answered. Oh, just the chance to become the first pitcher to throw a nine-inning perfect game in Northwest League history. "I didn't think Coach would let me last that long," Sterry said. "I was just hoping to pitch five quality innings, and he let me keep going." Sterry retired the first 22 batters he faced before Stephen Ghutzman drilled a double off the right-field wall in the eighth inning of Eugene's 4-0 win ...  struck out nine and allowed one hit in 7 2/3 innings during his professional debut. "At any level, you will not see a better-pitched game," Eugene manager Roy Howell said. "That can easily happen in the big leagues as it can in short-season Eugene. What you saw is confidence - it was like he was playing catch. He was ahead on everything and throwing all of his pitches for strikes." Sterry, an eighth-round selection from North Carolina State, struck out seven of the 12 batters he faced in his first four innings." (Eugene Register-Guard)

Troop movements ... STL recalled OF So Taguchi from AAA, optioned catcher Cody McKay to AAA ... SD -- promoted infielder Jake Gautreau to AAA, activated outfielder Brian Buchanan from the DL, optioned pitcher Ricky Stone to AAA  ... ATL -- placed outfielder Dewayne Wise on the DL, purchased the contract of outfielder Charles Thomas from AAA ... SD moving some kids up to AA :

" ... starting pitcher Gabe Ribas and OF Marcus Nettles have been promoted to Class-AA Mobile. Ribas, the Padres' 2003 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, was 4-5 with a 4.35 ERA in 13 starts. Nettles finished Tuesday's night's action with a .271 average along with a team-leading 15 stolen bases."

Jeremy Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, with a note on Blue Jays' moves :

" ... The Blue Jays had an outstanding draft in 2003 and they've challenged some of the top picks including SS Aaron Hill (AA), RHP Josh Banks (AA), and now RHP Shaun Marcum and 2B Ryan Roberts. Yesterday, the Jays promoted the 22 year-old Marcum from low A Charleston (WV) to high A Dunedin. He was a 3rd round draft pick last year from Southwest Missouri State where he was a shortstop/closer for the Bears. As a full-time pitcher, he's shown he can handle the pressure. With Charleston, Marcum went 7-4 with a 3.19 ERA in 13 starts. In his 79 innings of work, he held the opposition to a .217 batting average while walking 16 and striking out 83. Roberts was also elevated from Charleston to Dunedin. He has been a pleasant surprise for the Blue Jays organization considering he was only an 18th round pick from UT-San Antonio last year. Roberts has always had a good bat, but he's showing better power and a good glove at second base. Before the promotion, he hit .283/.440/.496 with 9 doubles and 13 HR. He walked 55 times against only 50 Ks. He led the South Atlantic League in OBP."

Euphoria to dismay in just a couple of weeks ... Matt Bush's baseball future cloudy, at best even with the dropping of the more serious charges against him :

" ...  The question now is whether the 18-year-old shortstop from Mission Bay High has a future with the team that made him the surprise No. 1 pick of the June free-agent draft. "I wouldn't take anything out of the picture right now," Freeman [Padres President Dick Freeman] said yesterday when asked if the Padres might try to void the $3.15 million contract awarded Bush. "I don't want to sugarcoat how I feel. I am so very disappointed. But I am trying to reserve judgment. We need to run a full investigation. There are a lot of unanswered questions." ...  early Sunday morning, Bush and his 23-year-old brother, Jeremy, were arrested at McDuffy's, a Peoria, Ariz., club, after an altercation with bouncers trying to evict the two from the night spot just across the parking lot from the Padres' spring training base.  Matt Bush was arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated assault for biting bouncer Eric Edwon on the left forearm. He's also accused of three misdemeanors: a class-one disorderly conduct charge and class-two charges of trespassing and being a minor consuming alcohol.

" ...  Bush has been suspended indefinitely by the Padres. His short-season rookie league teammates at Peoria began playing yesterday. Bush returned home to San Diego to undergo a physical exam requested by the Padres.  If Bush suffered an injury in the altercation, it might be grounds for his contract to be voided. Freeman said the contract would be one of the things examined in the Padres' investigation."  ... "Matt is scared that the Padres are trying to get out of his contract," Matt's father, Danny Bush, said yesterday. "My hope is that the Padres are trying to scare him and teach him a lesson. That would be good, a shot across his bow ...  General Manager Kevin Towers yesterday detailed the Padres' options: "Shall we stand by him? Get him help? Do we have grounds to void his contract?  "We are finding out more and more about him that gives us reason to be concerned. We've shied away from people on the major league free-agent market because of character." ... Danny Bush is concerned that Matt was under the influence of his older brother at the time of the incident.   "Jeremy has been in trouble before," Danny Bush said. A records check showed that Jeremy Bush has twice been convicted of a DUI charge and had his license suspended four times. He also served 47 days in 2000 on a domestic-violence charge. " (San Diego Union Tribune)

COL phenom Jeff Francis with a busy schedule ahead :

" ... Francis could start for the World Team in the July 11 Futures All-Star Game at Minute Maid Park. It won't be his last achievement. After a few more starts, he will be promoted to Triple-A and then possibly pitch for Canada in the Olympics. Bill Geivett, the Rockies' director of player development, will soon talk with Francis about representing his country. Geivett knows Team Canada's manager from their days together with the Montreal Expos." (Denver Post)

Ken Rosenthal, The Sporting News, with a hint of a position change for BJ Upton :

" ... The Devil Rays are so hot, they don't need to promote shortstop B.J. Upton, who hit .305 with a .402 on-base percentage and .504 slugging percentage in his first 141 at-bats at Class AAA. Upton, 19, is one of the game's top prospects. The question is whether he will remain at shortstop. "I don't trust him at short," one scout says. "To take him to the big leagues and let him play shortstop day in and day out, that might be a fatal mistake. He's a lot like (Alfonso) Soriano was, a position change waiting to happen. "He lacks the instincts for the position. He has a lot of problems connecting his footwork with his throwing. He's pretty slow to read plays, he bobbles a lot of balls, and his throwing is a problem. "Then again, he's very young, and maybe they're just pushing him too quickly. I'll say this. He will hit, hit for power and steal bases. And if they moved him to center, I think he could be a heck of a center fielder." The Devil Rays don't need a center fielder. They need a shortstop."

Dayn Perry, FoxSports, on some keys for the USA team in the Futures Game :

" ... Matt Cain ... Devastating stuff. Power curve, mid-90s heater, good changeup. Completely dominated older hitters at lower levels (including the hitter-friendly Cal League this season) and now is in Double-A as a 19-year-old. Health permitting, he's a future ace. Grade: A "

" ... Clint Everts ... Excellent curve and change, should add speed to his fastball as he matures. Showed improved control this season and hasn't been challenged by the Sally League. That he's already mastered his change means there's little danger of being moved to the bullpen. Grade: B+ "

" ... Kyle Sleeth ... Third overall pick of 2003 draft. Hard fastball with good movement, power curve. Signed too late to pitch last season. Looked quite strong at High-A Lakeland this season, but struggled in his first start at AA-Erie. Still, excellent potential. Grade: B "

" ... Michael Aubrey ... First baseman with Gold Glove potential. Projects to hit .300 with 25-30 homers at the highest level. Needs to improve his plate discipline. His upside is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of Tino Martinez during his best seasons. Grade: A- "

NUMBER ONE !  Ian Kinsler TEX, who didn't make anybody'spre-season top prospects lists has vaulted right to the top of Kevin Goldstein's Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :

" ... The Rangers knew they could trade A-Rod because they had this Kinsler kid! Yeah, that's the ticket! The 496th player selected in last year's draft continues to impress the naysayers by taking a rehabbing Andy Pettitte deep Friday night, and following that up with two more home runs on Saturday. Now hitting .404-16-65 in 66 games."

A pair of Rockies' farmhands finished 2-3 -- OF Jeff Salazar and 3B Jeff Baker.  COL SP Jeff Francis is 6th.

MON's Michael Hinckley has zoomed up to No. 11 :

" ... Hinckley now owns a career minor league record of 30-11, and has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his five Eastern League starts while limiting batters to a .218 average."

And, some relative unknowns on the list ... 16. Julio Pimentel SP LA ... 18. Jeff Keppinger 2B PIT ...  20. Tom Gorzelanny SP PIT.

Mark Allen Haverty, The Sporting News, on Matt Cain, Ben Hendrickson :

" ... Cain lost time last year because of an injury, but he still made 14 starts, posting a 90/24 K/BB ratio despite being an 18-year-old kid. Cain spent some time in the big-league camp this spring, long enough to impress Felipe Alou, before heading down to Single-A San Jose. He has been dominant, going 7-1 with 89 Ks and 17 walks and a 1.86 ERA in 13 starts. Dominating hitters older and more experienced than him, Cain certainly doesn't look or act like a teenager on the mound, and the 19-year-old just earned a promotion to Double-A. The Giants clearly are rushing him, but Cain seems to be handling it quite well. Cain will get a shot at the rotation next spring, and while he might not make it then, he should be a fixture in the rotation by the end of the 2005 season."

" ... The Brewers' system is highly respected thanks to the number of solid offensive prospects they have, but Hendrickson is one of the few quality arms. While he features a solid low-90s fastball, Hendrickson's calling card is a truly nasty curveball. But his over-reliance on that pitch is the likely cause of recent elbow problems, as he made just 16 starts last year. While he did pitch well in the Arizona Fall League last year, he clearly isn't top prospect material just yet. He has been better so far in Triple-A this year, but he could use a full season there to catch up. Unless there's an injury in the bigs, don't look for him before a September call-up."

" ... Fausto Carmona will soon see some familiar faces. Three members of the Kinston Indians will join the former K-Tribe ace ... First baseman Michael Aubrey, catcher David Wallace and pitcher Daniel Denham were called up after the Indians' 3-1 win at Myrtle Beach Sunday ... The trio will join Carmona, a right-handed pitcher who was promoted last week ... Aubrey, a 2003 first-round draft pick out of Tulane University, was hitting .336 with 10 homers and a Carolina League-leading 60 RBIs. Denham, a right-handed 2001 first-round draft pick straight out of his Antioch, Calif., high school, was 7-4 with a 4.18 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 71 innings of work." (Kinston Free Press)

Oh no.  The No. 1 pick too :

" ... Matt Bush ... suspended indefinitely by the San Diego Padres on Monday, a day after he was arrested at a bar in Peoria, Ariz. The 18-year-old Bush was arrested at McDuffy's, located across the street from the Peoria Sports Complex, at 12:32 a.m. Sunday for investigation of trespass, disorderly conduct and assault, said a spokeswoman for the Peoria Police Department ... She refused to release any other information. Bush, who was assigned to the Padres' rookie-level affiliate in Peoria, won't be able to play during the suspension, general manager Kevin Towers said. Towers said the Padres were disappointed. "The one thing that we try to do here, and it's very important not only at the amateur level but at the major league level, is the type of individual we bring into this organization is very important," Towers said Monday night. "We want people to be real positive role models for kids and set good examples and represent not only the San Diego Padres, but professional baseball and San Diego in a very professional manner, and this is not a real good early indicator of something like that."

Cubs' slugger Brian Dopriak (Low-A) beginning to attract a little attention :

" ... The free-swinging Dopriak is hitting .299-20-55 in 261 at-bats and, more impressively, cutting down his strikeout-to-walk ratio--walking 22 times and striking out 64. In just 78 at-bats at Lansing last season, Dopriak fanned 22 times and walked just twice. "He's getting repetitions and learning the more pitches you see, the better pitches you get," Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita said. "He's a guy who likes to work and that will make him better."  (Baseball America)

Jeremy Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on SP Chuck James ATL :

' ... James was originally a 20th round pick in the 2002 of the Braves and has generated lots of excitement with his performance to date. He evokes comparisons to Tom Glavine due to his plus-plus command and ability to hit his spots with all of his pitches. James stands only 6'0" 170 pounds and only hits 90 with his fastball, but his excellent command and plus changeup are proving valuable against low A hitters. He had an incredible year last season in short-season ball by going 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA in 50 innings. He held hitters to a .157 batting average. With his performance to date, James may have bypassed the struggling Macay McBride on the Braves depth chart. LHP Dan Meyer, currently at Double A, is probably the Braves' top LHP in the minors, but James is closing fast."

Maybe a little time in August or September in Jesse Foppert's future :

" ... Injured RHP Jesse Foppert, recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery in September, could be sent out on a rehab assignment in the next few weeks. He wasn't expected to be ready to pitch again in the majors until September. "The next step would be a rehab assignment," trainer Stan Conte said. "The reason to do it sooner would be to get that adrenaline to get his velocity from 85 mph to 90." (Associated Press)

Toby Harrmann has updated his MIL prospect chart at BrewerFan and he's a little disappointed in the top dogs :

" ... 1 Prince Fielder ... Rebounded a bit at the plate, getting his batting average back into the .260s and .270s... this is hopefully a sign of good things to come ... 2 J.J. Hardy ...  I'm not sure whether it is a good thing or not that J.J. is still #2 and Weeks is still stuck at #3 ... 3 Rickie Weeks ...  Hey, maybe having virtually everyone of consequence (like Weeks) skip High Desert isn't such a good idea... A .240 batting average for Rickie and a good number of K's - ick  ... 4 Brad Nelson ... It has been Brad's turn to struggle at the plate the past few weeks, and he's seen his batting average drop nearly 20 points since last we talked  ... 5 Corey Hart ... On pace for 30+ doubles and 20+ home runs in AAA, and those projections may be low if he can get his batting average back up to where it should be."

ARZ kids on the move :

" ...  top picks Conor Jackson ... Jamie D'Antona were likely going to move through the Diamondbacks' system as fast as their abilities allowed ... But two weeks into the season, the last thing left-hander Clint Goocher, a 31st-round pick out of Texas last year, was thinking about was an early shot at Double-A. At 1-2 with a 7.06 earned-run average, it wasn't even clear he'd keep his spot in the JetHawks' rotation. "You know, before the season, I felt if I put together a good first half moving up was definitely a possibility," Goocher said. "But after my first four stars, I kind of put it out of my head." Nearly two months of California League domination later, Goocher (9-2, 3.67) is on his way to Double-A El Paso (Texas) with Jackson (.340, 11 HR, 53 RBI) and D'Antona (.313-13-57) in the first wave of transactions that will dramatically shake up Lancaster's roster. The loss of Goocher, the team's most consistent starter with eight consecutive wins (he hasn't lost since April 25) and 10 quality starts, might be the hardest to overcome ... In 90 ²/³ innings, he walked 12 and struck out 82." (Antelope Valley Press)

Rafael Soriano SEA ... a little good news :

" ... Reliever Soriano has been cleared to begin playing catch - something he hasn't done since May 12, when he was put on the DL with a strained right elbow. It's the first time since the injury that Soriano's elbow was tested and he felt no pain." (Tacoma News Tribune)

Andrew Brown CLE (AA), to the DL :

" ... Brown was placed on the Akron DL on Friday with right arm fatigue. Right arm fatigue just sounds so vague, doesn't it? In his last outing (Tuesday 6/15), Brown gave up six runs in just two-thirds of an inning so, hopefully, this is nothing more than a precautionary move on the Indians part. In five starts with the Aeros, Brown has a 5.85 ERA in twenty innings, striking out 24, walking 14, and allowing just 10 hits." (Cleveland Indians Report)

Jonathan O'Konis, The Sports Network, on Matt Cain :

" ... Just 19 years old, Cain is off to one of the best starts of any pitcher in professional baseball. So far this season his numbers have been dominating. During his stint with the San Jose Giants of the Single-A California League, he went 7-1, with an ERA of 1.86, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of almost 9:2 (89-17). Opponents batted just .216 against the right- handed hurler. Cain was recently promoted to Norwich of the Eastern League. This past Friday night, in his first start for the Navigators, Cain tossed seven scoreless innings where he allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked one to earn his first win at the Double-A level ...  Cain gets the job done with a fastball that can approach 97 mph at times, but is usually best when it's between 92-95 mph. Right behind his fastball is an excellent curve that Cain can use to strike batters out at will. He's also been developing a change-up which isn't quite there yet, but Cain seems to want to make it work. So far he's mainly been using the pitch against lefties but will soon begin to use it more regularly. Injury has been a concern for Cain so far in his career. A stress fracture in his elbow sidelined him in the middle of the 2003 season. The Giants have been very cautious with Cain and have been trying to adjust his mechanics to take stress off of his elbow. The Giants also have been closely monitoring his pitch counts."

Dayn Perry, as Baseball Prospectus, with some views on minor leaguers in a BP chat :

" ... Before the season began, I would've said [Andy] Marte. While I'm still very, very high on Marte (.527 SLG at AA-Greenville as a 20-year-old), there's simply no denying what an amazing season [David] Wright is putting together. Now I'd have to choose Wright. Among Wright, Marte, Dallas McPherson (who's been absolutely amazing this season) and less advanced guys like Eric Duncan, Ian Stewart, Andy Laroche, Matt Moses and Jamie D'Antona, we could be headed for golden age for third basemen in the near future."

" ... [Ian] Kinsler is indeed having an amazing season. He led Midwest League qualifiers in EqA, and then the Rangers skipped him over High-A entirely to AA-Frisco. His performance straight out of college was nothing special, so I want to see a more extended example of success. Still, there's no ignoring what he's done this year. If he's a stock, he's somewhere between "hold" and "buy." But if this keeps up, well, he's something special."

" ... Both have been scary good thus far. I've heard that [Matt] Cain's delivery puts stress on his elbow, but, well, that hardly distinguishes him from other 19-year-old hurlers. I'm partial to [Felix] Hernandez because he's more than a year-and-a-half younger than Cain and has been every bit as dominant. Hernandez has electric stuff and a highly precocious feel for pitching. I can't say enough about his potential. Health permitting (and that's, of course, a huge x-factor), he's got superstar potential."
