Croghan's career mark for wins, pitching a complete game four-hit shutout, as
No. 5-ranked Long Beach State ... defeated No. 7-ranked UC Irvine
... 3-0 ... Weaver struck out 12 on the night, not walking a single batter
to win his 11th straight. At one point, Weaver retired 14 in a row from the
third until the eighth inning, at one point striking out four in a row and seven
of those 14 Anteaters. It was the eighth time this season that Weaver has struck
out double digits. Of Weaver's 107 pitches, 77 were strikes, as he had just 34
pitches through three and 68 pitches through six innings of work." (Long Beach

movements ... HOU -- optioned infielder Eric Bruntlett to AAA ...
Jeff
Schuler, Allentown Morning Call, on Gavin Floyd PHI :
" ... Floyd couldn't have had a much better
debut in his first Eastern League start last Sunday in Akron. Five innings. No
hits, no runs. Six strikeouts. A walk ... Friday night the highly touted
right-hander made his first home start, facing Akron for the second time in six
days. You might expect hitters one step up the professional ladder to make some
sort of adjustment against the young pitcher. But it didn't happen. Although
Floyd didn't get a win, his performance was almost as good ...''We've kind of
pitched them the same way, all six games we've faced them, and they are not
making adjustments,'' Reading pitching coach Rod Nichols said. ''So … Gavin
pitched to his strengths, and that's what most good pitchers do.'' Floyd allowed
three hits and struck out six in 5 2/3 scoreless innings, which means that in 11
2/3 innings, Eastern League hitters — well, make that the Indians — are now
hitting .083 (3-for-36) with 12 strikeouts against Floyd ... Nichols has already
seen the 21-year-old Floyd begin to become a pitcher, not so much a thrower. And
that's what excites the one-time major-league reliever the most. ''He's learning
how to pitch, his pitch selection, his pitch sequence to each hitter,'' Nichols
said. ''That's the hardest part of coming from A-ball to Double-A. The hitters
are going to make adjustments to his pitches, but so far, it's fun to watch,
because he makes the adjustments to them, too.'' ''He's just really locked in,''
Reading manager Greg Legg added. ''If he wants to throw a fastball in, he throws
it in. If he wants to throw a breaking ball for a strike, he throws it for a
strike.'' Limited to 70 pitches last Sunday, Floyd was stretched out to 90
Friday night, throwing 50 of them for strikes. He left after issuing his third
walk of the game, and second of the inning, which loaded the bases with two outs
in the sixth ... Three innings earlier he showed some of the poise that is
expected to help him one day land a spot near the top of the major-league club's
rotation. After two quick outs, Akron got its second base runner of the night on
an error, and Floyd followed by walking Rodney Choy Foo on four pitches. Now
facing Franklin Gutierrez, one of the prospects the Indians got from Los Angeles
for Milton Bradley, Floyd got a quick strike, then missed inside with two
fastballs. After Gutierrez fouled off a pitch, Floyd didn't get the call on a
curve that seemed to catch the outside corner. But he came back with another
that Gutierrez swung through to end the inning. ''I had confidence to throw my
curveball,'' said Floyd, who said he struggled with the curve early in the game.
''That's his money pitch,'' Nichols said. ''He saved it for the right spot. The
first one, I don't know how he didn't swing on it. The second one, he had to
swing on it.''

John
Sickels, ESPN.com, on John Danks TEX & Jason Kubel MIN :
" ... A first-round pick last year out of high
school ... Southpaw Danks throws in the low 90s and has an excellent curveball.
His changeup needs work, but that is true for most pitchers his age. Scouts like
his personality and aptitude for pitching ... pitching for the Clinton
Lumberkings in the Midwest League, he has fanned 12 in his first six innings.
He's an excellent prospect, but like all pitchers his age, he's a risky, if
high-reward, investment."
" ... Kubel is a very good prospect and deserves
more attention than he's received. He was a 12th-round pick in 2000 out of high
school ... shown the ability to hit for power and average, and is raking the
ball in Double-A so far this year, hitting .520 with a .960 slugging percentage
in his first six games at New Britain. A left-handed hitter, Kubel has plus bat
speed and outstanding strike zone judgment. He's not a huge walk machine, but he
very seldom strikes out and doesn't swing often at bad pitches ... is still just
21 years old. I think he's one of the best hitters that people haven't heard
much about."
Calvin
Pickering, finally healthy and showing why he was such a highly rated
prospect :
Pickering (a 35th round pick in 1995) had an
outstanding pro debut in Rookie Ball in 1996 -- .325 with 14 doubles & 18 homers
(.411 OBA) in 200 ABs. After a similarly successful 1997 season in A Ball
(.311 with 31 doubles & 25 homes, .394 OBA) Pickering first won recognition in
John Sickels' 1998 Minor League Scouting Notebook :
" ... He is enormous .. when he makes contact, he
can drive balls from coast to coast ... strikes out too much, but his command of
the strike zone isn't bad for an inexperienced player of his size ... B - "
He moved up to an A - rating by Sickels in 1999
after a stunning AA season (.309 with 28 doubles & 31 homers, .434 OBA -- 98
walks, 119 Ks).
" ... continues to improve offensively. His
command of the strike zone is very good, he has 30-homer power, he hits for
average ... has cut his strikeouts while increasing his walks as he has moved
up, an excellent sign for his future ... named Eastern League's MVP ... if he
keeps his weight under control Pickering may be one of the leading hitters of
the early 21st century."
Pickering dropped back to a "B" in Sickels' 2000
book (rated #4 in the BAL system in Sickels' ESPN rankings :)
" ... 4) Calvin Pickering, 1B: 1999 was marred by a
shoulder injury and complaints about his weight and defense, but I'm still
convinced he will hit if given a chance. "
He's bounced around the last few seasons ... BOS,
SEA, CIN, KC ... missing much time through injury ... but, he's still just 27

"He just doesn't have all his bullets. He needs to build up arm strength,"
Melvin said. "He's struggled, but it's not his fault. He's done the best he

Matthew
Pouliot, RotoWorld, with notes on Sean Burnett PIT and Matt
Holliday COL :
" ... With Rick Reed out of the way, Burnett should
make his major league debut prior to the All-Star break ... Although Burnett
just made his first start in Triple-A this week, the Pirates believe he is ready
to make the jump to the majors. The 2000 first-round pick entered the season
with a 2.64 ERA in 85 starts and two relief appearances as a minor leaguer
... has only an average fastball, topping out at 89 mph, but his other offerings
make him look like a No. 3 starter. His changeup, in particular, is outstanding.
Burnett probably won’t experience immediate success after arriving in the majors
... should settle in as a decent pitcher in 2005 ... upside is more
Brad Radke than Tom Glavine."
" ... Holliday is set to join the Rockies
because of Preston Wilson’s injury. The converted third baseman had been a major
disappointment until finally showing some life in the Arizona Fall League last
year. He’s always had power potential, but that resulted in just 61 homers in
613 games as a minor leaguer. The Rockies believe he’s turned the corner, and
considering the alternatives, they could give him quite a bit of playing time
while Wilson is out ... Given 450 at-bats, he could hit .270 with 15 homers."
COL,
good news, bad news on pitching prospects :
" ... Aaron Cook has yet to allow a run
through 13 innings and two winning starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs. No
worries about Chin-Hui Tsao taking a big-league job anytime soon, though.
A weakened shoulder is expected to keep the Rockies' top pitching prospect
sidelined at Colorado Springs until the first week of May." (Denver Post)
No
wealth of SP help on the Astros' farm :
" ... Carlos Hernandez had a good first start
(five scoreless innings) at Triple-A, but his velocity is not where we'd want
yet," Hunsicker said. "(Top righthanded prospect Taylor) Buchholz
had a good first outing, but it would be a little aggressive to consider him
this early. (Kirk) Saarloos has not pitched all that well."
(Houston Chronicle)
Tony
Gwynn Jr. MIL sees a lot to like in BJ & the Prince :
" ... I got to see B.J. Upton, the Devil Rays
prospect, play and I was really impressed. He's going to be a really good
player. He's got great poise at the plate. He must've gone right-center on us
three or four times at least. That showed he can really handle the bat and he
doesn't panic. He and my teammate Prince (Fielder) have to be the
youngest cats who don't act their age as far as their plate approach." (MLB.com)
New
immigration rules likely to hinder the influx of new baseball talent into the
USA :
" ... the impact is going to be felt in
efforts to sign amateurs in the next couple of months. A congressional limit of
66,000 work visas was met March 9. That means teams signing players from outside
the United States are not going to be able to get visas for them to play for
teams in the United States this summer. That could impact the amateur draft, and
for the Rockies, it could hit home even earlier. Left-handed pitcher Adam
Daniels of Northeast Oklahoma State College was the Rockies' 22nd-round
draft choice a year ago. A so-called draft-and-follow ... Daniels is being
watched this season by the Rockies, who have the rights to sign him until a week
before the June draft. What the Rockies have seen is impressive. Daniels has
gone 6-1 with a 1.34 earned-run average and has struck out 77 batters in 47
innings, walking 22 ... allowed a .106 batting average. Here's the catch. The
6-foot-2, 190-pound Daniels is from North Vancouver, British Columbia. Major
League Baseball is arranging a meeting with White House officials, hoping it can
find a sympathetic ear from President Bush, former owner of the Texas Rangers.

Jim
Callis, Baseball America, on Clint Everts MON :
" ... Everts' selection ahead of Kazmir and Hamels
in the 2002 draft was merited at the time, even if they have surpassed him since
... While Kazmir is a lefty and has better pure stuff, Everts was more
projectable and had a sounder delivery. With Hamels, there were questions about
his long-term health after he broke the humerus in his left arm ... Expos
drafted Everts fifth overall because they loved what he brought to the table,
and his $2.5 million bonus was not a discount ... has one of the best curveballs
in the minors, a plus changeup and a solid average fastball at 88-92 mph. He
should develop more velocity as he matures physically. Bear in mind that he's
still very young for a 2002 high school draftee, as he won't turn 20 until
August. He just needs more consistency with the command of his pitches, and at
times his curve can break so much that it fools umpires. Everts isn't far away
from having three plus pitches. Once he gets stronger and more aggressive, he'll
take off."
Dayn
Perry, FoxSports, has in-season updates on his Prospect Top 10s. He goes with
Andy Marte as the class of the system, then Andy LaRoche and lefty Macay
McBride :
" ... The Braves spent a first-round pick in 2001 on
McBride, a high-schooler from Georgia. McBride has pitched as high as the High-A
Carolina League, and he's been fairly impressive at every stop. A 2.8
strikeout-to-walk ratio and very low homer rate for his career tell the story.
Generally speaking, he's been younger than his peer group at each stop, which is
a data point in his favor. Braves instructors tweaked his mechanics this winter,
which resulted in an increase in velocity. Don't be surprised if McBride comes
up big in Greenville this season. The Braves know how to bring along pitchers,
and McBride certainly has the skills base to meet their expectations."
Edwin
Jackson bound for more time in the minors :
" ... Jackson appeared to drop farther on the
rotation depth chart as Manager Jim Tracy said Jose Lima would fill the fifth
starter's role Saturday against the San Francisco Giants. Tracy made statements
about Jackson's being the fifth starter during winter workouts at Dodger Stadium
and throughout spring training ... But Tracy said he planned to turn to Lima,
bringing the right-hander out of the bullpen instead of recalling Jackson ...
Moreover, left-hander Wilson Alvarez also was being considered for the
assignment ahead of Jackson. Tracy intimated that facing the Giants at SBC Park
would not be the best situation to ease in Jackson, saying he needed "another
start or two before we really start seriously looking at that situation."

get some good news on their top pitching prospect :
" ... results from an MRI on pitching prospect
Kris Honel were negative. Honel, the Sox's first-round pick in 2001 ... left
his debut with Double-A Birmingham last week after four innings with soreness in
his right elbow. "This particular issue was a fear of some bone spurs," Williams
said. "The MRI was negative on any structural damage at all. "He's going throw
on the side and get back out there in a week, and hopefully he can resume his
season." (Daily Southtown)
Angels'
future ace still not out of the gate :
" ... Righthander Ervin Santana was spending
time in the Angels' extended spring training program in Mesa, Ariz., before
reporting to Arkansas. He was recovering from shoulder soreness that he first
experienced around the opening of major league camp. "His shoulder was sore,
just experiencing some stiffness, but right now he actually looks outstanding,"
Angels farm director Tony Reagins said. The injury was unrelated to elbow
tenderness Santana went through briefly in 2003. Last year's Class A California
League pitcher of the year was throwing off flat ground and was expected to join
the Travelers by the end of April." (Baseball America)

" ... Heralded pitching prospect Zack Greinke
pitched five outstanding innings ... "You hate to get too excited about a young
kid in his first game in Triple A, but that was pretty impressive," Omaha
Pitching Coach Dave LaRoche said. Greinke, the 20-year-old right-hander, took a
no-hitter into the fifth inning before yielding a leadoff single to Jason
Alfaro. He finished the inning with no further damage, then was pulled on the
46-degree night. Greinke, who hadn't pitched in a game in nearly two weeks,
walked one and struck out three while using 62 pitches. He was on a 75-pitch
limit. "I've been struggling in the bullpen," Greinke said. "The first inning I
was off, but after that I started feeling comfortable." Greinke had a 12-pitch
battle with veteran Ryan Thompson in the fourth inning, eventually catching him
looking at a curveball. Thompson later delivered a two-run single in the sixth
off reliever Joe Dawley to break a scoreless tie. "I was very impressed with the
way he handled himself out there," said Thompson, 36. "I noticed he
quick-pitched me, and I thought that was pretty neat. He had command of his
pitches, he had an idea, and it's tough to do that when you're a kid." (Omaha

Chris
Kline, Baseball America, on Ryan Sweeney CHA :
" ... Sweeney has been compared to John Olerud as a
hitter with gap power, but he is still very raw--and still has time to grow into
his 6-4, 200-pound frame. As Sweeney is quick to point out, power is
traditionally the last tool to develop. And he's trying not to be as
pull-conscious as he was in rookie ball. "I just started lifting a couple of
years ago, so I feel like once I get what some people call 'man strength,' or
whatever you want to call it, the power will come," he said. "I still feel like
I can hit the ball out of the park right now, and they have a great weight
program here so that will only work to help me. But if hitting the ball out of
the park happens, that's great. I'm just looking to use the whole field and get
doubles, singles and drive in some runs."

A
few more from the prospect update at On Deck, Scott Rex :
" ...OF Tony Gwynn ... . has a good chance to
become a quality lead-off hitter in the major leagues. He has an excellent
batting eye, good speed, and excellent baserunning instincts ... could end
up being a good doubles/triples hitter with his line-drive stroke. The strongest
part of Gwynn's game is his center field defense. He has terrific range and he
gets great jumps."
" ... OF Lastings Milledge ... .will
miss the start of the 2004 season due to a broken hand that he sustained early
in spring training ... I'm going to take a chance and say Milledge will
return from the injury and display his outstanding ability ... once held in the
same esteem as Devil Rays super-prospect Delmon Young. Young is the better
hitter of the two, but Milledge is the better athlete. Milledge is a burner with
untapped, raw power. He can really crush the ball when he's going good. What he
still needs to work on his ability to recognize pitches ... Milledge's talent is
definitely in the Mike Cameron, Preston Wilson, Torii Hunter class."
" ...LHP John Danks ... Rangers
are dying for pitching and Danks is the best pitcher in the system. Just
18-years-old, Danks already has two quality pitches in a tailing, low-90s
fastball and a plus curveball. A good fastball and curve from a lefty at Low-A
should translate to big results for Danks this season. If Danks continues to
improve his change-up, he could become a #2/3 starter in the majors."
