Dayn
Perry, FoxSports, has the A's up in his new series of team-by-team prospect
reports. It's Bobby Crosby and Joe Blanton, then a bunch of
other guys suggests Perry. At #4 is CF Nick Swisher :
" ... And here we have another from
the Moneyball cast of characters. Swisher, whom the A's were giddy to select
with the 16th overall pick of the 2002 draft, hasn't developed as planned. He
had a strong half-season in the Cal League in '03 but looked overmatched at
Double-A Midland in the second half. He has good plate discipline, but his power
is questionable and scouts doubt he has the chops to play center at the highest
level. If he's confined to an outfield corner, then his value is reduced. His
failure to hit in the high minors and suspect defensive skills mean he's more
hype than performance at this point. Swisher is off to an excellent start in the
PCL this season, but it's early. That said, some have tabbed him for a breakout
season in '04. If that does come to pass, a reevaluation of his stock will be in
order."
Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld.com,
on Jesse Crain MIN :
" ... Crain is now the top relief prospect in the
minors. The 2002 second-round pick zipped through five levels in his year and a
half in the minors, posting a 1.69 ERA and giving up 57 hits with a 143/36 K/BB
ratio in 111 2/3 innings. Batters hit just .149 against him. Crain didn’t give
up his first homer as a pro until last week. He currently has a 4.82 ERA with 10
hits allowed and a 10/2 K/BB ratio in 9 1/3 innings for Triple-A Rochester ...
Command can be a problem for Crain at times, and that’s the only thing keeping
him in the minors right now. Crain will make his major league debut before too
much longer. There’s a good chance he’ll take over as the Twins’ primary
right-handed setup man after the All-Star break."
John
Sickels, ESPN.com, on the comeback of Joe Saunders ANA :
" ... Saunders, drafted by Anaheim in the first
round in 2002, missed all of '03 rehabbing from a torn rotator cuff. He is back
on the mound this year, and pitching effectively for Class A Rancho Cucamonga in
the California League, allowing two earned runs in his first 17 innings, with a
14/3 K/BB ratio. His command and control are outstanding, but he'll have to show
he can maintain this sort of performance when he reaches Double-A, as he lacks
overpowering stuff."
Jim
Callis, Baseball America, on Bryan Bullington PIT :
" ... The Pirates say Bullington's stuff has started
to rebound in his first two starts at Altoona, and they believe it will come all
the way back. In his first two starts at Altoona this year, his fastball sat at
90-91 mph with a high of 93. His slider is short and tight again, and he's
commanding both pitches well. He's still working on his changeup and curveball,
though the change projects as a solid average pitch down the road. Bullington
has physically matured and is in tremendous shape, which has helped his cause.
The odd thing ... Bullington has just one strikeout this year. He has been
stingy with baserunners, permitting just six singles, a double and three walks,
but he certainly hasn't missed many bats. I think that's just an anomaly, as
Bullington averaged 7.1 strikeouts per nine innings last year with lesser
stuff."

John
Sickels, ESPN..com, on Chris Lubanski KC :
" ... A left-handed hitting center fielder
comparable to a young Johnny Damon, Lubanski has very good speed, gap power, and
good strike-zone judgment. He works hard to control the strike zone, and he told
me that's the main thing the Royals want him to work on: plate discipline. He's
off to a decent start, hitting .268 through 12 games, but with a .423 on-base
percentage and a .415 slugging percentage. He's drawn 10 walks in 12 games. Lubanski is rather lanky, and has broad shoulders. He has plenty of bat speed,
and I think he will develop more power than Damon in time. He's already a fine
defensive player in center field as well ... Unless he starts hitting .400
or something, I imagine he'll spend this year at Burlington. The Royals see him
as the long-term replacement for Carlos Beltran, but they don't intend to rush
him. David DeJesus (off to a fast start in Triple-A) will get first crack at
Beltran's job, then eventually move over to left field once Lubanski is ready.
That would be 2006 at the earliest."
Matthew
Pouliot, RotoWorld.com, on Jonathan Broxton LA :
" ... Another up-and-coming Dodgers pitching
prospect, Broxton was a second-round pick in 2002. The 6-foot-4 right-hander
throws in the mid-90s and has a hard slider and an average changeup. He was
limited to 37 by wrist and shoulder problems last year and more injuries could
result in him becoming a reliever. The Dodgers likely will keep him in the
rotation for as long as they can, though, since he does have a great deal of
upside."

"
... highly touted catcher Justin Huber will join the Binghamton Mets in time for
a six-game homestand ... Huber, ranked by Baseball America as the Mets'
fifth-best minor leaguer, has been slowed by a strained chest muscle. "I've
been told he'll be with us (today)," manager Ken Oberkfell said Thursday
... Huber, 22, joins a Double-A club already loaded with high-profile
major-league prospects. Third baseman David Wright is leading the Eastern League
in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles and extra-base hits, and
right-hander Matt Peterson has pitched to a 2.30 ERA in three starts. After
getting injured late in spring training, Huber opened the season as the
designated hitter with St. Lucie. He resumed catching last Saturday and has been
hot with the bat, going 8-for-21 (.381) in his last six games. This is
considered to be a big season for Huber, in his fourth pro season after being
signed by the Mets in 2000 as a non-drafted free agent out of Australia. The
Mets are looking for him to become more consistent defensively while continuing
to improve on the .274 average, 15 home runs and 72 RBI he posted between
Binghamton and St. Lucie last season." (Binghamton Press &

Insights
in John Manuel's column at Baseball America ... on ARZ, PIT & LA prospects :
"
... Sergio Santos ... hitting .352-2-10, though he had struck out
15 times in 54 at-bats. "He was tinkering when I saw him,” one scout
said. “He kept changing his setup; the first day, his hands were at his belly
button, and the next day, they were in tight. I heard he was doing it on his
own, and the next day, his hands were above his shoulder. I realize he’s only
20, but he’s going to have to move to third pretty soon. He’s definitely not
a shortstop."
"
... righthander John Van Benschoten was struggling
mightily, getting hit hard again Wednesday night to leave him 0-2, 12.34. He
already had given up 24 hits in just 11 2/3 innings, and this scout thought he
knew why. "I saw him last year and he was 93 mph, even touched some 95s,
but I didn’t see that when I saw him this year," he said. "It was
more in the 88-90 range and it was up in the zone. His stuff was ordinary across
the board."
"
... Andrew Brown ... coming off surgery last year to remove bone
hips in his throwing elbow. His free, easy delivery produces mid-90s heat, and
he was touching 97 in three April starts, making it very hard for opponents to
touch him. Brown, 23, struck out 13 and 10 in separate starts for Class A
Jacksonville and had 28 strikeouts and just two walks in his first 14 innings,
despite an 0-1, 4.61 record. "He has a great arm, really an electric
arm," scouting director Logan White said. "He's been 96-97 and right
now, we're being cautious (with his workload). He has the normal stiffness that
you go through with that (elbow) surgery, but he's shown some good signs. He has
such a good upside, he's a guy we feel, if he stays healthy is a front-line
starter."
Kevin
Baxter, Miami Herald, on the return of Jeff Allison and unanswered
questions :
" ... It has been a week since Jeff
Allison, the Marlins' highly touted first-round pick in 2003, showed up for his
first spring training camp. Everyone else in minor league camp, however, showed
up more than five weeks earlier. But on Tuesday both the Marlins and Allison
avoided a complete explanation why Baseball America's High School Player of the
Year was allowed to report a month late. The team, which excused Allison's
absence, says the pitcher had a "personal problem." '"No
comment," Allison said when asked about his tardiness. "I've heard a
lot of stories, but I have no comment on all of them." Among the stories
Allison said he heard: that his mother was sick, that he was grieving for a
former teammate who died from substance abuse, and that he was seeking treatment
for a substance problem of his own ... he denied the first story,
confirmed the second and did not deny the third -- but pointed out he has never
failed a drug test. Allison, 19, said a former teammate who died ". . . was
one of my good friends. Something bad happened. And I felt for the kid real bad.
Because I liked him a lot. A lot of people liked that kid. "It was a real
sad thing that happened. And I was kind of struck by that. But I didn't do
anything stupid." When asked if his delay in reporting to training camp had
anything to do with substance abuse, Allison said after a long pause,
"People are saying whatever they want anyway." Allison noted he has
never been suspended for drug use."

After
a second inning departure in AAA Monday, Bobby Jenks on the DL and to be checked by
ANA's medical men :
" ... the Angels are concerned enough about the
right-hander that he will ... undergo a series of medical tests and be examined
by team physician Lewis Yocum. Angel General Manager Bill Stoneman said Tuesday
he was "still gathering information" about the injury, but farm director Tony
Reagins said the initial diagnosis by Salt Lake City trainers was tendinitis.
Jenks, whose fastball has been clocked near 100 mph, missed half of the 2003
season because of a stress fracture in the same elbow, but he returned to play
winter ball in Puerto Rico — where his fastball was once clocked at 103 mph —
and was one of the Angels' most impressive pitching prospects in spring
training. But Jenks' fastball in the first inning against Fresno on Monday was
in the 88- to 90-mph range, 10 mph below his usual velocity, and he struggled
with his control. In one inning, Jenks gave up three hits, hit a batter in the
helmet and walked three. "From what we know now, it doesn't look like a
reoccurrence of what happened last year," Reagins said. "He had a problem
getting loose. We want to be as cautious and thorough as possible. But from what
we know now, it just doesn't sound like it's the same thing he had last year."

MIL's
sweet Lou drawing raves in A-Ball :
" ... Over the individual lockers in the Beloit
Snappers clubhouse, everyone has a name tag over his space. Catcher Lou
Palmisano's simply reads, ``Sweetness.'' While the Midwest League season is
just two weeks old, Palmisano has already lived up to his billing. The Milwaukee
Brewers' 2003 third-round draft pick, and last season's Pioneer League Most
Valuable Player, has shown that he is a constant line drive threat on offense
and a stable force behind the plate. He also defies the rules your prototypical
catcher _ he's very mobile and well-rounded in so many aspects of the game. In
the league, Palmisano ranks in the top 15 in batting average (14th, .316), runs
batted in (tied for ninth, 9), runs scored (tied for 13th, 8) and on-base
percentage (10th, .458). Palmisano easily leads the league by getting hit by a
pitch five times. Clearly he does everything to get aboard. ``In any situation,
all I try and do is relax,'' said Palmisano ... ``If I get a pitch to hit,
I get a pitch to hit. If not, then I'll take a walk. I'm doing whatever I can.
That's all I can try and do.'' But that's just the offense. What the Snappers
care more about is what he brings to the defense. In 11 games Palmisano has yet
to commit an error. And so far the Snappers coaching staff is very impressed,
particularly pitching coach Rich Sauveur. ``I love watching him. I've enjoyed it
so far,'' Sauveur said. ``He's doing an outstanding job." ... Palmisano is
used to donning his catching gear every day. ``I've been catching since I was
9,'' Palmisano said. ``I do nothing out of the ordinary. I just do my job, help
the pitchers out, keep the balls in front of me and call a good game. You
control the infield and try and be a leader on the field.'' He makes it sound so
easy. But as expected, Palmisano is human and he has made a few mistakes in the
pitch calls. To Sauveur, the only way Palmisano will get better is if he learns
from the occasional slip-ups ... ``He's learning from his mistakes.''
(Charlie Corr, Beloit Daily News)
Jim
Callis, Baseball America, on Jamie D'Antona ARZ :
" ... D'Antona is off to a great start, batting
.326/.380/.652 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 11 games at Lancaster. He's
accustomed to putting up big numbers, setting Wake Forest's career home run
record with 58 and tying for the short-season Northwest League homer crown with
15 last summer after signing as a second-round pick. He has the best power in
the system, with the strength and bat speed to knock the ball out of the park to
all fields. His swing can get long at times, which can hamper his ability to
make contact, so he'll have to watch that as he rises through the minors. He has
a very strong arm, but his range and hands are limited and he'll likely have to
move to first base before he reaches the majors. If he continues to tear up the
Cal League—and he's playing in a very hitter-friendly ballpark in a very
hitter-friendly league—a midseason promotion is a possibility."
Evan Grant, Dallas Morning News, on Ramon Nivar TEX :
" ... Although Nix has looked amazingly at ease in
center, it's only two weeks into the season. Nevertheless, the Rangers are
already thinking ahead, too. Nivar is taking ground balls in the infield almost
every day and the Rangers say they'd be content to finish a game at second or
short with him in the event of an injury. When Brian Jordan comes back from the
DL ... Nivar could go back to the minor leagues to work on center field some
more or play the infield. Next year, the Rangers could have Michael Young at
short and Nivar at second, although I expect that's a bit of a long shot. I
suspect the Rangers would make acquiring a shortstop a top priority and move
Young back to second if they trade Alfonso Soriano. Then Nivar could either
become a Tony Phillips-type player – a speedy infielder-outfielder who could be
used as an alternative at DH if there is enough power in the lineup."

Some of the Hitters/Pitchers of the Week :
PCL, Calvin Pickering " ... Of
Pickering’s 17 hits this season, 11 have been homers ... racked up an
astonishing 1.594 slugging percentage, and a .531 batting average in 10 games.
The slugger has had four two-homer games and has driven in three runs or more
five times, accounting for more than half the RBI total of his entire team (25
to 40). Pickering is also tops in the Pacific Coast League in home runs, RBI,
runs scored, batting average, slugging percentage, and extra-base hits. In a
week full of great days at the plate, the Kansas City Royals farmhand had his
best on April 16th against Oklahoma when he went 4-for-4 with two home runs and
seven runs batted in."
INT " ... Rochester 1B Justin Morneau hit
.422 (19-45) with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 homers, 13 RBI and a .756 slugging
percentage."
TEX " ... Tulsa's Jeff Francis went
2-0 with a 1.54 ERA. He allowed 7 hits, 2 earned runs and 2 walks while fanning
17 in 11.2 innings."
EAST " ... Akron right-hander Francisco
Cruceta went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking
out 9 in 14 innings." (Minor LeagueBaseball)
COLLEGE -- Wade Townsend, WAC Pitcher of the
Week :
" ... For the second time this season ...Townsend
was named the Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the week ... fired
the first complete game win of his career with a two-hit shutout of San Jose
State on Saturday. Townsend did not allow a hit until there were two away in the
eighth inning. He walked four, hit two batters and struck out nine." (Rice
University)
In the Big West, it's (Pitcher of the Week) getting
to be a habit ... for Jered Weaver :
" ... For Weaver, it was his sixth conference honor
of the season, as the righthander lowered his ERA to 1.00 on the season with a
four-hit shuout in the opener. Weaver struck out 12 en route to his 11th
straight win of the year. It was the eighth time in 11 starts Weaver has struck
out double digits. Weaver also tied Andy Croghan for the all-time record for
wins, as the righthander is 33-8 all-time with 12 career Big West Pitcher of the
Week awards. Weaver has struck out 118 on the season." (Long Beach State)

Just a short note in the Detroit Free Press ... once
such a highly regarded catching prospect :
" ... Toledo outfielder Ben Petrick was
released. Petrick, who hit .225 in 43 games for the Tigers last season, was
0-for-10 with seven strikeouts for the Mud Hens."
Yanks Jorge De Paula ... the dreaded Dr. Andrews
visit :
" ... De Paula's velocity dropped 7-8 mph to 83-84
when he pitched Friday, worrying the Yanks. He saw team doctors in New York
Saturday and Cashman said yesterday that he has a sprained right elbow. But
there could be ligament damage that would require surgery, Cashman admitted. The
Yankees are sending him to see specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.,
later this week. Asked how long De Paula's injury could keep him out, Cashman
said it "could be a long time. He definitely has something going on there." (New
York Daily News)
Scot
Rex, OnDeck, has posted the first of his league-by-league prospect reports.
The Southern League is the first off the mark and Scott likes BJ Upton TB
as the best of the bunch. MIL placed four in the top dozen -- Prince
Fielder and Rickie Weeks 2-3, Brad Nelson No.
6 and Mike Jones No. 8. Andy Marte ATL ranked
No. 4 just ahead of James Loney LA. The rejuvenated Jason
Stokes was No. 7 and, after Jones, Edwin Encarnacion CIN,
Bobby Brownlie, Kris Honel and Josh
Barfield wrapped up the terrific twelve.

movements ... NYA recalled RHP Scott Proctor & LHP Alex

Rodriguez TEX, a candidate to be recalled, heading for surgery :
" ... going on the disabled list because of
appendicitis. "When he woke up this morning, they thought it was food
poisoning," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. "The next thing you know, he
has appendicitis" Rodriguez is expected to undergo an appendectomy. If it can be
done through arthroscopic surgery, he could be pitching again in a couple of
weeks. Regular surgery could keep him out for a month." (Fort Worth Star
Telegram)
Joe Mauer MIN, on schedule :
" ... Mauer passed a psychological phase of his
rehabilitation from knee surgery, turning in his crutches Saturday afternoon.
"It feels real good," he said. "It's a good sign. Every day it's getting better,
I'm gaining more range of motion." Mauer's timetable for returning from surgery
to repair torn meniscus in his left knee hasn't changed -- the rookie will
probably be back in early May. "We're not going to do anything to rush him, to
try to get him back a week early or anything like that," manager Ron Gardenhire
said. "We're on the same timetable." (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
Greg
Ball, North County Times, on the 3-4-5 of ARZ's California League franchise :
" ... One of the more exciting parts of following
minor-league baseball is watching prospects develop, and there should be plenty
to watch this season in the California League. Of the top 100 players from last
year's draft, 35 went to teams with Cal League affiliates, and eight of those
landed on the Opening Day rosters of Cal League teams. Remarkably, three of
those eight are with Lancaster, hitting consecutively in the JetHawks' lineup.
With left fielder Conor Jackson (No. 19) batting third, right fielder
Carlos Quentin (No. 29) fourth and third baseman Jamie D'Antona (No.
66) fifth, the JetHawks should strike fear in pitchers all season. They're each
ranked by Baseball America among the Diamondbacks' top 14 prospects. "The
organization sees them as a big part of the Diamondbacks' future," Lancaster
manager Wally Backman said. Even without having played a full season, this trio
has solid credentials. Jackson led the short-season Northwest League last year
with 60 RBIs in 68 games, and D'Antona was second with 57 in 70 games. Both are
projected to increase their power, especially with the ease in which balls fly
out of the Hangar in Lancaster. Quentin also falls in that category, although
he's a bit of a question mark because the former Stanford star underwent
offseason Tommy John surgery and didn't play after the college season last year.
Through Friday, D'Antona and Jackson were each hitting .355 or better, and
D'Antona led the league in home runs (4) and RBIs (12). Quentin was off to a
slow start, hitting .129. "This may be the most prospect-rich club we've ever
sent to any city since we started in 1996,'' Diamondbacks farm director Tommy
Jones told the L.A. Daily News. "I don't know if the Cal League has seen a 3-4-5
combination like this in quite some time, if ever."
