Chris
Kline, Baseball America, has the second installment of BA's "prospects by
position" feature with Casey Kotchman atop the list of first basemen :
" ... Kotchman's fluid swing is a classic in
the mold of Todd Helton or Will Clark, and he creates explosive contact with the
fat part of the bat on a consistent basis. He manages to put himself into good
hitter's counts by rarely chasing pitches out of the zone. He still maintains
his aggressiveness, however, and attacks the pitch he's looking for. Kotchman is
content to hit hard line drives to all fields and is still learning to use his
power in game situations. He projects to hit 25 homers a year in the big
leagues, and he's also a future Gold Glover, with soft hands and smooth actions
around the bag. Kotchman profiles as a prototypical No. 3 hitter who will be
among the league leaders in average, doubles and on-base percentage on an annual
basis."
Earlier, BA tabbed another ANA farmhand as the best
of the catching prospects :
" ... Jeff Mathis ... Now at Double-A
Arkansas ... drawn comparisons to Jason Kendall and Mike Lieberthal for
his athleticism, agility and offensive ceiling."
Scott
Rex, OnDeck, with his revised rankings for the TEX League. Newcomer
Felix Hernandez SEA (see more below) leaps right to the top of the ladder,
ahead of COL's Jeff Francis. Jeff Mathis ANA
is No. 3 topped teammate Ervin Santana. Chin-Hui Tsao is
No. 5, Conor Jackson ARZ No. 6 and Ian Kinsler TEX
at No. 7.
A
pair of MIN standout prospects on the verge of callups :
" ... Club officials are considering calling up both
slugging first baseman Justin Morneau and righthander Jesse Crain.
It's another sign the coaching staff is not going to wait much longer for the
current group of players to snap out of the collective funk ... Morneau is
batting .323 with 20 homers and 59 RBI at Class AAA Rochester. His on-base
percentage is .397 and has committed three errors in 61 games at first base. The
club has wanted Morneau to improve on judging the strike zone ...
Crain, who has
hit 96 miles per hour on the radar gun, is 3-3 with a 3.20 ERA and 16 saves at
Rochester. He has 51 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings." (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
Jesse
Foppert, well ahead of schedule, could be back on the hill this month :
" ... Foppert plans to pitch against
professional hitters just 10 months after undergoing elbow reconstruction
surgery. Foppert's recovery is going so well that he said Friday he expects to
begin an extended minor-league rehab assignment in two weeks and ideally rejoin
the big club in September. The former USF standout won eight games in an
encouraging rookie season last year before undergoing "Tommy John'' surgery in
September to repair a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching
elbow. The original prognosis called for Foppert to miss 12-18 months. He has
been pitching simulated games every five days, reaching into the mid-to-high 80s
in velocity, and Friday threw about 60 pitches, including sliders. "He's way
ahead of schedule,'' manager Felipe Alou said. "Way ahead.'' Foppert said that
during his lengthy rehab he has experienced some "dead spots'' when he doesn't
have much zip on his pitches, but no pain. And he's finally feeling like a
pitcher again. "I'm not spending much time in the trainer's room anymore and I
can almost do everything that everybody else is doing,'' said Foppert, who will
turn 24 next Saturday." (San Francisco Chronicle)
Jim
Callis, Baseball America, on Felix Hernandez SEA :
" ... Hernandez is the best pitching prospect in the
minors right now. He's 18 and has two plus-plus pitches in his mid-90s fastball
and his curveball. He's still very projectable at 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds, too.
In 167 pro innings (and he always has been very young for his league), he has
gone 16-5, 2.47 with a 213-55 strikeout-walk ratio, .233 opponent average and
nine homers. The Mariners are trying to bring Hernandez along slowly, giving him
time to refine his changeup and learn the finer points of pitching. But he has
been so good that he's making that difficult. Gooden was a little more dominant
in his 18-year-old season (he was BA's 1984 Minor League Player of the Year),
but he also was in more of a pitcher's league and spent the entire year in high
Class A. Seattle has enough pitching so that it probably will resist the
temptation to put Hernandez in its rotation at the start of the next year, but
he might not wait much longer than that."
Jamey
Newberg, Rangers' Minor League Report, on John Hudgins TEX :
" ... Marvel all you want at Hudgins's line -- seven
shutout innings, three hits, no walks, 11 strikeouts -- but unless you were in
the ballpark too, you couldn't possibly comprehend how remarkable he was. I've
met John Hudgins, or at least I think I have. The guy I saw out there wore
something as close to a scowl as you'll ever see on a guy who was doing his job
well, while the guy I met four months ago was about the most affable, humble pro
athlete I've ever run across. Last night's guy on the mound was so locked in, so
intense, that he probably wasn't aware that half a dozen Ranger front office men
were in the stands or that twice as many of his own family members were hanging
on every pitch. He probably wasn't even aware that there were fans in the park
at all ... And consider this: despite the 11 punchouts, Hudgins still needed
only 90 pitches to get through seven innings. A crisp 70% of his deliveries were
strikes. I've never seen a better pitching performance in the minor leagues.
Hudgins put every pitch where he wanted it, commanding a fastball that sat
around 90 most of the night, mixing in a decent curve, and showing San Antonio
hitters as dirty a changeup as those of them who eventually get to the majors
might ever see. He dealt. He orchestrated. He was Greg Maddux."

John
Sickels, ESPN.com, on Matt DeSalvo NYA :
" ... He is the NCAA Division III all-time leader in
strikeouts and victories, yet he was available on the free agent market because
his fastball is in the 87-88 mph range, mediocre for a right-hander. I saw him
pitch for Battle Creek last year after he signed, and I was very impressed with
his curveball and especially his changeup. DeSalvo went 6-3 with a 1.43 ERA and
80/30 K/BB in 75 innings this spring for the Tampa Bay Yankees, allowing only 48
hits and one homer. He was just promoted to the Double-A Eastern League, and has
pitched well in his first two starts for Trenton: 13 innings, 13 strikeouts,
three walks, nine hits, 3.46 ERA. He isn't a big guy and his lack of a hot
fastball keeps him off the top prospect lists. But his command is sharp, he
keeps the ball down and he misses bats. Hitters have a hard time getting a good
read on him due to his deceptive delivery and ability to change speeds. I don't
think you can say he's a future ace, and it may be hard for him to get a shot
with the veteran-oriented Yankees. But he's had no trouble adjusting to pro
ball, and if he continues to pitch well in Double-A (which I think he will),
he'll get a chance eventually, with the Yankees or someone else."
Jeremy
Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on two more upwardly mobile players :
" ... Yusmeiro Petit ... Promoted from
low A to high A Petit absolutely dominated the South Atlantic League with
Capital City (Mets). He led the league in wins (9) and strikeouts (122) while
holding the opposition to a .162 batting average. Not many people knew about
Petit prior to the season but he is raising eyebrows now. Look for him to
continue his success with St. Lucie."
" ... Brian Anderson ... Promoted
from high A to AA When the White Sox traded OF Jeremy Reed to the Mariners ...
many Sox fans were disappointed that they were giving up their best outfield
prospect. Anderson now takes over that honor. He was the Sox first round pick
last year out of Arizona and he is a polished young hitter. He hit
.319/.394/.531 at Winston-Salem with 22 doubles and 8 HR. Anderson has a good
glove, decent speed, and solid pitch recognition skills."
Scott
Rex, at OnDeck, has been busy updating his league-by-league, top prospect lists.
Only the PCL remains to be updated for this season.

Another
first-rounder signed and anxious to suit up :
" ... For Glen Perkins, playing in the
Minnesota Twins organization is a dream come true. The last of Minnesota's
first-round picks to sign landed in Elizabethton on Thursday ... may pitch
sometime in the next couple of days. "I'm excited to get going," said Perkins.
"Living in Minnesota, I'm a Twins fan. I've loved them my whole life. I had the
month off after the draft and I'm happy to be down here. It's a little bit
different than Minnesota." The left-handed pitcher from Lakeland, Minnesota
finished a stellar sophomore season at the University of Minnesota, where he was
named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year ... has high expectations in the
Appalachian League. He had a 9-3 record with a 2.83 ERA in 16 games with 21
walks and 113 strikeouts for the Golden Gophers last season, earning second-team
Collegiate Baseball News All-American honors. "That's what got me up in the
first round where I was picked," Perkins said of his career at Minnesota. "Being
left-handed and throwing three pitches for strikes, I plan on continuing that
and building on what I've done so far." (Elizabethton Star)

Matthew
Pouliot, RotoWorld, on Nick Swisher OAK :
" ...Swisher hit just .230/.324/.380 in 76 games for
Double-A Midland last season, so it came as quite a surprise when the As had
him start this year at Triple-A Sacramento. However, the 2002 first-round pick
has done more than enough to justify the teams faith, batting .258/.436/.516 in
70 games ... isnt particularly fast, but he hasnt looked too out of place in
center field while climbing through the minors ... has a chance to be an above
average hitter at a corner. Hes not going to bat .300, but .270/.380/.480 would
be realistic. In a best-case scenario, he could have Tim Salmons career.
Jermaine Dye is a free agent, Bobby Kieltys been a disappointment and Eric
Byrnes, while adequate, isnt really an everyday corner outfielder, so theres a
good chance that Swisher will get a chance to win a starting job in spring
training."
Jeremy
Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on a rising star, albeit small, in the SD system :
" ... It isn't an everyday occurrence when scouts
laud a 5'11" 160-pound lefthanded pitcher who has average fastball velocity.
Padres 21 year-old LHP Sean Thompson is turning heads with each and every
performance and is finally convincing scouts that he has enough "stuff" to
succeed ... 5th round of the 2002 draft ... his command, makeup, and
poise have turned what was once a long-term project into a potentially
fast-moving hot prospect. Thompson is pitching currently with low A Fort Wayne
in the Midwest League and is 5-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts. In 80 innings,
he's held hitters to a .231 average while walking 33 and striking out 80 ...
has a lot of positives working in his benefit. He only throws an 88-91 mph
fastball, but gets excellent sinking movement and can work it to both sides of
the plate. He is equally tough against lefties and righties by utilizing a great
curveball (almost unhittable for a lefthanded hitter) and a potentially great
changeup. Thompson's command is probably his biggest strength and feels
confident enough to throw any of his three pitches at any time in the count ...
He ranks with fast-rising Tim Stauffer (now at AAA) and Justin Germano as the
Padres best pitching prospects ... Because of his maturity and moxie, he
has the "stuff" to succeed at any level."
Sam
Geaney, at his scouting site on the California League (calleaguers.com), selects
the top dogs for the first half of the season. The top three have already
moved on and up :
" 1. Matt Cain RHP San Jose Giants- Polished
righty with stuff to go along with it. Dominated his time in the Cal League. Oh
yeah, he won't turn 20 till October.
2. Conor Jackson LF Lancaster Jethawks-
High profile college bat lived up to hype in first half of first full season of
pro ball. Was promoted along with his middle of the lineup teamates to AA @ the
end of the first half. Defense in LF is irrelevant."
3. Felix Hernandez RHP Inland Empire
66ers- 18 year old righty with explosive mid 90's FB, hammer curve and solid
feel for pitching. Cal League hitters won't have to deal with him in the second
half as he was promoted to AA San Antonio."
4. Ubaldo Jimenez RHP Visalia Oaks-
Similar repertoire to Hernandez, pure stuff a tiny notch below but makes up for
it with a more advanced approach. Back injury took him out of the spotlight."
5. Jeff Salazar CF Visalia Oaks-
Classic overachiever who has some solid tools to go along with a plus plus
approach. Does everything you could ask for out of a CF prospect."

That marks the third straight game in which Sing has hit a 3-run home run and
the 4th 3-run home run in his last 3 games. Tonight's home run gave the Cubs an
11-3 lead over the Manatees. The old mark stood strong since 1996, but fell

The only threat to break up the perfection came in the top of the eighth inning.
With one out, Vinny Rottino hit a popup into shallow centerfield. Chris Lubanski,
who was playing deep, came racing in and made a diving catch to rob him of a
hit. Adam Heether sent Lubanski back to the warning track to haul one in on the

Andrew
Cushman, The Sports Network, on Dallas McPherson ANA (previous to
McPherson's two-homer game on Tuesday) :
" ... As the calendar churns toward Major League
Baseball's July 31st trading deadline, rumors and speculation are running
rampant about potential deals. One name sure to surface will be that of Anaheim
Angels prospect Dallas McPherson. Recently promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake in the
Pacific Coast League, McPherson absolutely destroyed Double-A Texas League
pitching in the first half of the season. McPherson's first-half numbers ranked
him in the top-10 in 11 offensive categories: .321 batting average (8th), 53
runs scored (2nd), 69 hits (1st), 84 hits (T-3rd), 17 doubles (T-7th), six
triples (T-2nd), 20 home runs (1st), 173 total bases (1st), 34 walks (5th), .404
on-base percentage (6th) and throw in a gaudy .660 slugging percentage. Since he
arrived at Salt Lake, the 6'4, 220-pound third baseman has gone 8-for-22 with
six extra-base hits - a .364 average. He's already jacked three home runs,
collected seven RBI and scored seven runs ... McPherson is as can't-miss a
prospect as any in Minor League baseball. And despite what the Angels could
receive for him on the trade market, the guess here says McPherson is
untouchable, especially with Anaheim's three-time all-star third baseman Troy
Glaus on the 60-day disabled list following shoulder surgery."
Jeremy
Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on Chris Burke HOU :
" ... Burke has been a model for consistency. Known
for his slick glove and great fundamental skills, he's used his above average on
base skills and contact-hitting approach to profile as a classic #2 hitter at
the big league level. Last year with Round Rock, he hit.301/.379/.388 with 23
doubles, 8 triples, and 3 HR in addition to 34 stolen bases. The former 1st
round pick in 2001 has vastly increased his power numbers this season. With New
Orleans, Burke is hitting .327/.407/.517 with 10 HR and 21 stolen bases. He has
already eclipsed his career-high in HR and should do the same in stolen bases.
There is no reason to think that Burke won't be a very good second baseman at
the next level. He may not profile to hit 20+ HR per year, but he will play
fundamentally-sound baseball and get on base for the Astros power hitters."
Mike
Gullo, The Minors First, with some notes on one of the promotions, and a
probable promotion, from the South Atlantic League :
" ... Jumbo Diaz ... they don't call him
Jumbo for nothin'! He seems like about as close to an Armando Benitez clone as
there could be. He hit 100 mph one of the times I saw him and he regularly works
in the 96 range. His 59 K's over 34 innings with Columbus tells it all. Just
when you're keyed in for the heater, look out! He'll drop and upper 80's slider
in on you. It almost looks like it's not fair. Normally it's a mistake to think
of low levels Minor League relievers as future Major League closers, but this
guy makes it hard not to be excited about him. Destination: Vero Beach (FSL)."
" ... It wouldn't surprise me to see Tom
Gorzelanny (Pirates) moved up. The lefty has really been about as dominant
as any starter in the league. He's not just your crafty lefty either. He works
between 88 and 91 mph and can hit 93
more than enough for a lefty. His
predominant secondary pitch is a nice slider and he also throws an occasional
change (maybe it's even a splitter, I couldn't tell). In the past he's had
inconsistent command, but Pittsburgh thought enough of his arm to draft him in
last year's second round. He's lookin' good so far this year. I didn't see any
signs of waivering command."

Philly
Phenom, Ryan Howard, tops Kevin Goldstein's Prospect Hot Sheet at
Baseball America :
" ... With 14 home runs in June, including three
multi-homer games in the last week, the hulking Howard now leads the minor
leagues with 28 home runs while rasing his batting average nearly 60 points
(from .250 to .308) in the last three weeks. Don't promote him yet, he's just
five away from the Reading team record of 33, set by Greg Luzinski in 1970."
Dallas McPherson ANA and Clint
Everts MON finished 2-3.
Chris
Kline, Baseball America, on Delmon Young TB :
" ... Young, who just turned 18, is hitting
.287-12-56 in 279 at-bats and has garnered all-star honors in the Sally League
to go along with being selected to this year's Futures Game in Houston ... Last
year in the Arizona Fall League, Young said he though he could finish the 2004
season in the major leagues. His first exposure to full-season ball has
moderated his timetable, however. "I have no idea about (getting promoted),"
Young said. "That's not my department. I don't make the decisions. I'm just here
trying to be consistent. I've had a lot of ups and downs and I've been kind of
hot and cold throughout this half. I'm just trying to be quick in making my
adjustments and trying to survive here. It's been a good test on and off the
field." ... What impresses the Rays the most about Young has been his
consistency and ability to not only hit for power but for average as well. He's
also kept his strikeouts (61) to a reasonable amount. "He's very selective at
the plate," assistant general manager Tim Wilken said, "maybe more so than we
thought at this point. But we've been more impressed by the steadiness that he's
carried in his first season. He's had a lot of ups and downs, but nothing where
he's drowning or anything like that. But at the same time, he hasn't really
peaked yet, either."

ATL arms moving up the ladder toward the Braves :
" ... The Braves are moving three of their top
pitching prospects up a classification, with Dan Meyer joining Class AAA
Richmond, Kyle Davies going to Class AA Greenville and Chuck
James jumping to higher Class A Myrtle Beach. Left-hander Meyer, 22, was
6-3 with a 2.22 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 65 innings at Greenville, while
right-hander Davies, 20, was 9-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 75 1/3
innings at Myrtle Beach. James, 22, will join Myrtle Beach after pitching in the
South Atlantic League All-Star Game tonight at Charleston, S.C. For Rome, the
left-hander was 8-2 with a 1.90 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings."
(Atlanta Journal Constitution)
Clint
Everts MON poised for a promotion :
" ... Montreal Expos farm director Adam Wogan
planned on Clint Everts playing the entire 2004 season with the low-Class A
Savannah Sand Gnats. Wogan didn't want to rush the 19-year-old right-hander's
development and promote him too soon after the Expos made him their No. 1 pick
and the fifth overall in the 2002 major league draft. But Everts may be forcing
the Expos to make a decision after posting a 6-2 record with a 1.99 earned run
average thus far ... He ranks fourth in the league in strikeouts and fifth in
the league in ERA, despite missing two starts in May when the Expos wanted to
take a look at another player. "I can't really say right now," Wogan said when
asked about the possibility of Everts moving up to high-Class A Brevard County
in the Florida State League. "We had high expectations for him coming into the
season. Certainly he's done as well or better than we expected." In 14 starts
for the Sand Gnats, Everts has given up only 17 earned runs in 77 innings with
17 walks and 90 strikeouts. Opponents have batted just .183 against him. Everts
has been even more impressive this month - 3-1 with a 0.62 ERA. The 6-foot-2,
170-pounder has allowed just two earned runs in 29 innings with five walks and
37 strikeouts while holding opponents to a miniscule .096 batting average."
(Savannah Morning News)
Aged
prospect on the verge of finding a spot in the M's lineup :
" ... Tacoma DH Bucky Jacobsen, the Rainiers'
monstrous cleanup hitter, belted six home runs over a seven-day span ending
Sunday and was named Batter of the Week in the Pacific Coast League for the
second consecutive week. Jacobsen finished the week 11-for-24 with 11 RBIs to go
with his home run output. Heading into yesterday, he carried a .327 batting
average with 24 home runs (second in the PCL) and a league-best 76 RBIs.
Jacobsen, 28, has often been dismissed as a career minor leaguer, but his
numbers are becoming difficult to ignore. With Edgar Martinez likely in his
final season with the Mariners, the right-handed slugger could be working his
way into a job with the big club next season." (Seattle Post Intelligencer)

kudos for the Expos' top SP prospect :
" ... Expos righthander Clint Everts
continues to get better with each outing. Everts struck out 12 in six innings
Saturday and is 6-2, 1.99 with 90 strikeouts in 77 innings. He has also made an
impression on one of the game's brightest young stars, Charleston RiverDogs
right fielder Delmon Young. "He's the toughest pitcher I've faced," Young said.
"The first two times we faced him, it was basically fastball-slider and he just
dominated us. The third time, he broke out a changeup like I've never seen. It
wasn't just a changeup--it was Eric Gagne-like." (Baseball America)
Jeremy
Deloney, Baseball Miscellany, on BJ Upton TB :
" ... Upton is a definite five-tool talent with
high-ceiling potential. Scouts praise his abilities and find no current or
future weakness (other than his careless errors). Offensively, Upton has
tremendous bat speed and projects to hit for both average and power. He has a
very mature approach at the plate; he has pitch selectivity abilities and has
the patience to wait for his pitch. His above-average approach allows Upton to
hit any fastball or breaking ball offered him and can drive it to any part of
the ballpark. If youve seen Upton, you know he has a rather lanky and flimsy
frame. But dont think he cant hit the long ball. He projects to hit 25+ HR at
the big league level once he fully fills out. It isnt inconceivable to think
that Upton can hit .300-30-100 consistently in the Majors. And keep in mind that
hes only 19 years-old ... Dont be fooled by the high number of errors.
Upton has an extremely gifted arm that would rank among the Majors best right
now. He has well-above average range and quickness which allow him to get to any
ball hit in the hole. Upton can turn the double play with the best of them, too,
with his good footwork. So whats causing all the errors? Tampa officials arent
overly concerned because most of the errors are derived from overly-aggressive
play. Upton has a tendency to overthrow which results in wild throws to first
base. He also has periodic lapses in concentration, but most scouts think hell
rid himself of that habit once he encounters better competition."
Jonathan
Mayo, MLB.com, on Jeremy Reed SEA :
" ... Reed burst on the scene in just his
first full season of pro ball in 2003. He led the minors with a .373 average and
.453 OBP between high-A and Double-A, hitting .409 after a promotion to
Birmingham. The second-round pick in the 2002 draft was rated No. 16 on
MLB.com's Top 50 prospects list. Reed won't measure near the top of the charts
in any one tool. But his baseball instincts help carry his average tools across
the board into an above-average package. With continued development, Reed could
become a Jim Edmonds-type who makes the most of his ability. He started the 2004
season, his first in Triple-A in just his second full season, a little slowly,
at least from the power perspective. He didn't homer in April and drove in just
seven runs, perhaps because he came back from a wrist problem at the end of last
year a little too soon. He now has eight homers, 14 doubles for a .420 slugging
percentage and has 37 RBIs."
John
Sickels, ESPN.com, on John Buck KC :
" ... Buck is a large, physical, muscular player.
His swing is relatively short for a power hitter, and he does not strike out
excessively, generally making very good contact. He'll go through phases where
he tries to pull the ball too often, and it seems unlikely that he'll ever hit
for a great batting average ... projects 15-20 homer power in the long run
... Buck's defense has improved greatly since he was a raw high school backstop.
He is very mobile for his size, usually blocks the plate well, and has a strong
arm. His release is sometimes a notch slow, which inhibits his ability to throw
out runners despite his arm strength. He handles a pitching staff well, and
coaches praise his leadership skills ... His numbers over the last few
years project him to be a .240-.260 hitter at the major-league level with 10-12
homers in a full season, not great numbers, but at age 23 (24 next week) he
still has development time left ... The Royals see him as their "Catcher of the
Now" as well as their "Catcher of the Future." He will be able to handle the job
defensively. Whether he becomes a star, a solid regular, or merely adequate,
will depend on what he does with the bat."
John
Sickels, in an MLBcenter.com chat, on Edwin Jackson LA :
" ... Jackson's stuff has been as good as ever, but
his numbers at Vegas haven't been great. I can think of several reasons. 1) he's
still just 20. Not many 20 year olds thrive in Triple-A. 2) It's Las Vegas and
the PCL. Enough said. 3) He came a long way last year, perhaps too far too
quickly. He may be a bit disgrungled and discouraged right now that he's in
Triple-A and not the Show. Personally I think Jackson is still an outstanding
prospect, but his command clearly needs some refinement. They have a lot of
pitching in their farm system to offer on the trade market, so a trade for a bat
is certainly possible...they have the raw material in the system to make the
deal. But again, it's hard to say right now. We'll know more in a couple of
weeks once the status of the trade market is more clear."

Another
CLE kid moving up the ladder :
" ... Francisco Cruceta, a 22-year-old
right-hander who is one of Cleveland's top pitching prospects, has been promoted
from Double-A Akron ... Cruceta was 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA and an Eastern
League-leading 134 strikeouts last year, but he's just 4-8, 5.28 in 15 starts
for the Aeros this season. He was acquired from the Dodgers in 2002 for reliever
Paul Shuey. "His numbers in Double-A certainly aren't what we anticipated, but
this might "up' his game a bit," said Bisons manager Marty Brown. "It will
increase his awareness of how close he is (to the major leagues) and let us see
what we really have." (Buffalo News)
Jake
Stevens ATL one of the more prominent participants in the SAL All-Star game
Tuesday :
" ... I think its going to be awesome, said
Stevens, who is 6-1 with a league-low 1.50 ERA. Stuff like this doesnt come
along very often. You might play baseball for 20 years and only get to be a part
of one all-star game. I am planning to make the most of it. ... Its a great
feeling, said Stevens, who rolls into the all-star break riding a streak of 30
consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. To get a chance to do this
in my first (full-season of professional baseball) is a huge privilege.
Philly
notes from Randy Miller, phillyburbs.com :
" ... Injury-prone LHP Bud Smith is off the
DL and pitching again, but his velocity is in the low 80s. Smith, 24, came up
with a sore shoulder after one April outing in Triple-A, then didn't pitch in
another game until working three scoreless innings for the Threshers last week.
... LHP Cole Hamels (1-0, 1.13), out with a sore elbow, is
scheduled to resume throwing off the mound this week ... CF Greg
Golson, the Phils' No. 1 draft pick, is scheduled to make his pro debut in
the next few days ... Very impressive in his return season from Tommy John
surgery, Dominican RHP Franklin Perez (6-4, 4.15) will be promoted
to Triple-A for the first time on Monday. Perez, 26, missed all of last season
after having surgery ... Pre-injury, the 6-2, 230-pounder regularly hit 94-95
mph as a reliever. This year, he's been throwing 90-91 mph consistently as a
starter ... Although Perez is being used as a starter now to build up arm
strength, down the road he could become a late-inning reliever in the big
leagues."
Rangers'
first-rounder Thomas Diamond signs :
" ... The big righthander, who went 6-4, 2.38 in 17
[University of] New Orleans starts this spring, striking out 138 hitters and
walking 45 in 113.2 innings and holding the opposition to a .209 average, will
be assigned to Spokane. He'll report Tuesday and likely get his first start
about a week later." (Jamey Newberg, Rangers' Minor League Report)
Jason
Falls, barons.com, on Mike Morse, new shortstop in the SEA system (item
filed before news of the Garcia trade) :
" ...
Mike Morse, 22, stands out ...
six-feet, five-inches and 235-pounds ... a third-round draft pick of the
White Sox in 2000 after a stellar career at Nova High School in Davie, Fla ...
In his debut pro season in 2000, Morse hit .256 with pair of homers and 24 RBI
on Tuscon's rookie team. Since, he has elevated up the organization's rungs each
of his five professional seasons, going from Advanced Rookie ball in Bristol, to
Class A Kannapolis, then Winston Salem, now Birmingham. Until this year, his
average has always been around his career mark of .248, but his power numbers
have shot up in his last two stops. He hit a career-high 56 RBI with a
team-leading 30 doubles in 2001. His Winston-Salem tallies included a .245
average, but with 10 home runs, 55 RBI, 30 doubles and 42 extra-base hits."
" ...
In his first season of double-A ball
... Through Saturday's games, Morse is hitting a career and team-high .340 with
four home runs and seven RBI in just 13 games. He saw a streak of three straight
games with a long-ball snapped in Saturday's (4/24) 4-3 win over Greenville,
opting for a triple instead ... "He fits into that mold of the prototypical
power shortstop," manager Razor Shines said. "I think he's going to continue to
improve and produce offensively." ... "My main goal is to keep my errors
down," he said. He has committed two this year, but cut a career-high 32 in
Kannapolis in 2002 down to 19 at Winston-Salem last season. "If my errors are
low, I know I'm not hurting my team." ...
" ... As if by divine intervention, his hitting coach in Birmingham this year is
three-time Gold Glove-winner Manny Trillo. "It's like God passed an angel down,"
Morse agreed. "He's been answering my prayers. The one thing I needed the most
was a guy to be here everyday who really knows how to play infield. I already
feel like his influence is making a big difference." "He's a young kid and
has a lot to learn," Trillo said. "Fielding-wise we need to work on his footwork
and turning double-plays. But, I don't think he'll have much problem
(adjusting). Everything is going good for him right now. With the attitude he
has, he works pretty hard and he'll get better and better every day."
