Giants shell out for Dominican teenager :
" ... Giants on Saturday signed Angel
Miguel Villalona, a 16-year-old third baseman from the Dominican Republic.
The Giants gave Villalona a $2.1 million signing bonus, making him among the
highest paid amateur players in club history, and reportedly outbid the New York
Yankees, Mets, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. "Everybody's excited,"
Giants general manager Brian Sabean said ... Villalona, who turned 16 on Aug.
13, signed for the 2007 season and is expected to report to instructional league
in Arizona next month. He is from the Dominican town of La Ramona, and back home
the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Villalona is already drawing comparisons to Alex
Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre and Wily Mo Pena. Sabean said if Villalona -- nicknamed
"Wily Mo" -- were a draftable player, he would be a legitimate first-round pick.
"For his age, his power is off the charts," Sabean said." (AP)
Royals' minor league notes from the Kansas City Star :
" ... Royals Top 10 ... 1. 3B Alex
Gordon, Class AA ... 2. OF Billy Butler,
Wichita: Joined U.S. national team for Olympic qualifying tournament in Cuba;
could win Texas League batting title without playing another game. 3. RHP
Luke Hochevar, Class A Burlington: Dominating two-inning outing
provided an encouraging debut."
" ... Omaha 2B Jeff Keppinger is
batting .366 in 25 games since arriving from the Mets in a trade for Ruben Gotay.
… Wichita RHP Billy Buckner won his last two starts and allowed
just one run in 13 innings."
Jason A. Churchill, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, with his SEA Prospect Hot Sheet
:
" ... 1. Jeff Clement, C, Tacoma
(Triple-A): Forget about the .241 average and .318 on-base percentage. Clement
is regaining his batting eye for the first time since his seven-week DL stint.
The catcher has seven walks this month to just nine strikeouts."
" ... 3. Alex Liddi, 3B, Peoria
(Rookie): Liddi is hitting .327 with a .523 slugging percentage in his first pro
season. Some scouts believe the Italian native is among the best third-base
prospects in the lower minors. Liddi turned 18 on Monday."
" ... 5. Ryan Feierabend, LHP, San
Antonio (Double-A): Feierabend hit a bump in the road in his last start but has
gone 8-3 with a 3.21 ERA since June 9. The lefty is well on his way to the big
leagues in the next year."
Lisa Winston, MLB.com, on Carlos Gomez NYN :
" ... He made the jump
this year at age 20 from Hagerstown, a Class A team. He was second in the Minors
in stolen bases a year ago ... He made the jump to Binghamton. That was a
real leap of faith for the Mets. It's not common for them to take a young
prospect, skip him past St. Lucie. He went right to Binghamton to start this
year. He got off to a slow start, but they stuck with him and he has absolutely
kicked butt the last month and a half. He hit .406 in July, raised his average
to .280 with six homers, 40 RBIs and 31 steals. He's a very slim, speedy center
field type, great upside. I would say he and Lastings Milledge will make up
two-thirds of an excellent outfield easily by 2009."

Jim
Callis, in the chatroom at Baseball America, offers some prospect views :
Ty Clippard " ...
He is what he is -- a guy with great minor league numbers and pretty ordinary
stuff. There are a lot of guys like that. I'd project him as a No. 4 starter,
though I'm notably conservative. Those slots just represent where you think a
pitcher would fit in a good rotation."
3B in COL? " ... Atkins
has continued to progress. I still think Stewart will be the better player in
the long run, but he is struggling some in Double-A this year. The gap between
the two has narrowed, but I'd still bet on Stewart."
Blake Hawksworth or
Jaime Garcia? " ... If you could guarantee me that
Hawksworth's arm problems are completely behind him, I'd take him. I liked him a
lot before he started getting hurt. I'll still give him a little edge because he
has a longer track record and is getting it done at a higher level."
Travis Snider, Adam
Lind? " ... Snider had the best high school bat in the 2006 draft
and has a chance to be a star. I see Lind as more of a solid regular, not that
there's anything wrong with that."
Trevor Crowe 2B
" ... Second base isn't a haven for prospects, so Crowe immediately does become
one of the top guys there. I see him as more of a 15-homer guy . . . he has hit
just five this season."
3B Zimmerman or Gordon?
" ... Zimmerman has hit better and with more power than I expected this early,
but I still see Gordon as a better hitter. His ceiling is huge. He can become
one of the very best hitters in the major leagues."
Carlos Gonzalez
" ... I had one scout compare him to Carlos Beltran last year, and he thought
Gonzalez could be a better hitter for average than Beltran."
Evan Longoria "
... Scouts liked his power, but I don't think anyone saw 16 homers in his first
two months as a pro. He's very good, but probably not that good. In the long
run, he should hit for average with 25-30 homers a year."
Lisa Winston, MLB.com, with a possible candidate for Minor League Pitcher of
the Year :
" ... Scott Lewis,
Cleveland Indians ... will have to contend with one of his own
organization-mates, Class A Kinston southpaw Chuck Lofgren, who is 15-5 with a
2.46 ERA. Lewis' 3-1 record has not been so much a question of bad luck on the
decision front as it has been his having been limited in his innings due to two
years' worth of arm and shoulder woes. He's only had the minimum five innings to
qualify for a win five times. The first three times he combined for 15 innings,
no earned runs, no decisions. He's floated on and off the official leader board,
fluctuating by day as to whether he has enough innings to qualify. When he is on
the board, he leads all full-season Minor League starters with a 1.40 ERA,
striking out 107 batters in 96 1/3 innings while giving up 70 hits. More
important, for Lewis and the Indians, he has not missed a start this season.
He's given up one earned run in his last four starts."

RotoAmerica salutes the best of the week (to 15 August) :
" ... 1. Homer Bailey
... CIN ... Look for him in Cincinnati this September. Bailey is making a
mockery of Double-A with a 1.03 ERA in nine starts."
" ... 4. Carlos Carrasco
... PHI ... 19 year-old is on fire, tossing seven hitless innings in his last
start. Now has a 2.25 ERA and 143 K’s in 140 innings while holding hitters to a
microscopic .170 average."
" ... 6. Matt Harrison
... ATL ... 17 scoreless innings in his last three starts and probably now ranks
as Atlanta’s top pitching prospect. They need him in Atlanta now, but he’s
probably not quite ready for that jump."
Among those on the "Look Who's Cold" list :
" ... 5. Delmon Young
... TB ... There are rumors that a call-up is imminent, but Young is back to
showing little power and patience. Just seven homers and 13 walks in 73 games
this year."
" ... 8. Ian Stewart
... COL ... .275 in Double-A and where is the power? Just nine homers in 450
plate appearances. Still very young however."
Likely no Danks in TEX for now.
" ... there are no plans for lefty prospect John
Danks to join the rotation ... Danks, who turned 21 in April, is
considered the organization's best pitching prospect. He has allowed three runs
in 12 2/3 innings in his last two starts. "We'd like to leave him alone down
there the whole time," Showalter said. "But you don't know what may come up."
(Dallas Morning News)
FLO prospect on the shelf
" ... Gaby Sanchez is on the disabled
list for the second time this season and is likely out for the season after
fracturing a toe on his left foot while playing for the Marlins' Single A
affiliate in Jupiter. Sanchez, a fourth-round pick in the 2005 draft, missed
seven weeks this summer with a broken bone in his left hand. He was hitting .182
in 16 games for Jupiter before getting injured Saturday. The Marlins will wait
for the results of an MRI today to determine how long the third baseman could be
out. The Florida State League season ends Sept. 3." (Miami Herald)
Angels' kids struggling with injuries :

injury in late July, suffered another setback when he was pulled from Sunday's
game after two at-bats because of a rib cage injury. He hasn't played since.
First baseman Kendry Morales, who was demoted to Salt Lake on July 24,
has been out for a week and a half because of a rib cage injury." (LA
Times)
Some tidbits from Thursday's report from the International League :
" ... After enduring a forgettable start to his
Triple-A career, Jeff Kartens [NYA] has rebounded to become the go-to guy
in the Clipper rotation. In his first seven starts the Clippers lost every time
and he was tagged with the loss in five of those games. He was sent to Trenton
and then transferred back to Columbus on July 15. In seven starts since the
recall he has gone 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA and the Clippers are 6-1 in those seven
starts."
" ... Jason Hammel [TB] has found
his form down the stretch. The righty struck out 13 last night, the most ever by
a Triple-A Bull, in a 2-1 11-inning loss to Toledo. Hammel allowed just a run on
four hits and hit one batter over seven innings. He has struck out at least 10
hitters in his last two starts, and in his last three outings, he's given up
just three earned runs, covering 18.2 innings. During that stretch he's allowed
18 hits, while walking two and striking out 26."
" ... Edwin Jackson [TB] didn't have a
professional save until a week ago. He saved three in a four-day stretch after
being sent down from Tampa Bay. Jackson, who began the year in Durham's starting
rotation, now has pitched scoreless baseball in four relief appearances with
Durham, allowing one walk and one hit while striking out four over four
innings."
" ... Over the last seven games Triple-A rookie Adam
Lind [TOR] has hit .565 (13-23) with five multi-hit games and has at
least one hit in each game. Lind has reached base in nine straight games and 19
of his first 21 in Triple-A. Rated the Blue Jays #4 prospect by Baseball America
Lind has shown patience at the plate walking 14 times compared to 11 strikeouts
and he has not struck out in seven games. The Blue Jays third round pick in the
'04 draft is hitting .355 with 3 HR and 7 RBI since being promoted from Double-A
New Hampshire."
Jim Callis,
Baseball America, on a SF phenom :
" ... amazing pro debut among 2006 draftees,
considering where he was selected, belongs to Giants 35th-rounder Adam Cowart,
a fifth-year senior sign out of Kansas State. A submariner who works with a
sinker that sits in the mid-80s and a slider, Cowart has gone 8-0, 0.29 in 11
starts in the short-season Northwest League. Cowart hasn't given up a run in six
of his outings and has permitted an earned run just twice (once each time). In
62 innings, he has nearly as many strikeouts (39) as baserunners allowed (34
hits, five walks, three hit batters). He has yet to surrender a home run."
Over at Baseball Prospectus,
Kevin Goldstein (ex Baseball America) is doing some remarkable work in his
prospect reports. Now, most of it is via subscription, but you might be
able to sneak a peak at some of the material. In his latest
position-by-position installment he's checking out the best of the lefty
starters.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 7-3, on Wednesday. Pedroia went 4-for-5 with a
run-scoring single in the first inning. The 22-year-old second baseman's hit in

final at-bat on a 1-for-4 night, then he went 3-for-3 on Tuesday before singling

Dayn Perry, FOXSports.com,
on Josh Fields CHA and Adam Miller CLE :
" ... Fields ... The White Sox have
been waiting a long time for Fields to live up to his promise with the bat. He
showed occasional pop last season ... this season at AAA-Charlotte, Fields is
hitting an impressive .314 AVG/.387 OBP/.525 SLG with 27 doubles, and he ranks
third in the International League with a .911 OPS ... With Joe Crede still in
the fold, the Sox have time to break Fields in gradually next season or perhaps
try him out at an outfield corner."
" ... Miller has electric stuff, but he's
been waylaid by recurring elbow injuries. In 2006, however, Miller has worked
144 innings with 146 whiffs and a 2.81 ERA. To boot, it's his first taste of
Double-A, and he's been on fire since early July. The health concerns will
always be with Miller, but a full and dominant season in the Eastern League is a
great way to rebound. He's on target to be in the Cleveland rotation at some
point in 2007."
Zach Chalifour,
RotoTimes, checks out the Royals' royal pair - Alex Gordon and
Billy Butler:
" ... Gordon has not only hit as
expected (.320 BA, 97 R, 24 HR, 80 RBI, 1.001 OPS), but he has also made
outstanding use of his above-average speed, stealing a high number of bases with
great efficiency (21-for-24 in SB tries). He has walked 63 times, but he has a
relatively high strikeout total of 94 in 111 games. Those numbers should level
out as Gordon continues to improve and adjust to professional pitching ... There
is a chance that Gordon may push Teahen for the starting third base job next
spring, but unless he has an outstanding March, the Royals will likely allow
Gordon to begin the year at Triple-A Omaha. Either way, Gordon could start
seeing significant playing time before next year’s All-Star break."
" ... Butler is not quite as ready for
the show and will likely not see any major playing time in Kansas City until
2008. With 15 home runs this year at Wichita, Butler is unlikely to match his
total from last year of 30 home runs between Wichita and High-A High Desert, but
he is still batting a more than respectable .327 and has driven in 93 runs. His
plate discipline (41 walks, 67 strikeouts) has also improved ... Though he is an
outfielder now, many scouts feel as though Butler does not play at a sufficient
level on defense and that he will eventually have to play first base or work as
the designated hitter."
Zack Greinke to remain in the minors at least through the first week of
September :
" ... decision is he stays at Class
AA Wichita for the duration of its season. Thereafter, a September call-up is a
growing possibility. Greinke delivered his fourth straight dominating start
Monday night by allowing just one run and five hits in seven innings ...That put
him in line with general manager Dayton Moore’s previously stated threshold —
that Greinke needed to have “four or five dominant outings in a row” before
departing Wichita. “He’s pitching terrific,” Moore agreed, “and we’re excited
about how he’s doing. But there are no plans to call him up until after their
season.” ... Royals captain Mike Sweeney said he saw a changed person in
Greinke while on a recent rehab assignment with Wichita. “I went from talking to
a kid in spring training,” Sweeney said, “to talking to a grown man in Little
Rock, Arkansas. And I went from seeing a guy with tremendous talent just going
through the motions on the mound to a warrior who wants to compete. “
(Kansas City Star)
Notes on a pair of young Orioles from the Baltimore Sun :
" ... Orioles officials insist there is
nothing wrong with Hayden Penn and they are just being extra cautious
with their top pitching prospect. Penn's arrival to the big league club has been
expected for a while now after his stay on the disabled list after an
appendectomy. But the 21-year-old remains at Triple-A Ottawa, where club
officials say he is making progress rebuilding his arm and leg strength ...
"Each outing he gets stronger and more consistent," said David Stockstill, the
Orioles' director of minor league operations. "It takes time to get your rhythm
and mechanics back when you have a month off in the middle of the season. I
think he is getting very close to helping the big league club."
" ... After a second opinion confirmed the
initial diagnosis of a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder, catcher
Brandon Snyder, the Orioles' No. 1 draft pick last season, is set to have
surgery within the next week. Stockstill said that Snyder will be out for about
nine months, but the Orioles are hopeful it could be slightly less because the
tear is in Snyder's non-throwing shoulder."

Ah, not Maybin too.
" ... He's already a
million-dollar ballplayer with a major-league future, but Cameron Maybin
is also a teenager facing some minor-league charges. The West Michigan Whitecaps
star is accused of violating the state's zero-tolerance alcohol law and of
driving carelessly following a 5 a.m. car crash, court records show. Maybin, 19,
allegedly blew a 0.04 on a preliminary breath test after the July accident that
damaged his 2005 Dodge Magnum ... On July 13, about 17 hours before Maybin
smacked a game-winning home run in Battle Creek, police say Maybin had alcohol
in his system when the car he was driving hit a utility pole." (Grand
Rapids Press)
About time ...
" ... Lancaster JetHawks ...
will have to play the rest of the season without right fielder Carlos
Gonzalez. JetHawks manager Brett Butler informed Gonzalez after the game
that he was being promoted to Double-A Tennessee ... He will be replaced
on the roster by Cyle Hankerd ... a third-round pick this year out of USC,
was hitting .387 with 38 RBI in 53 games for short-season-A Yakima."
(Antelope Valley Press)
" ... The Pirates ... promoted
catcher Neil Walker and outfielder Andrew McCutchen, their top
prospects and first-round draft picks in 2004 and 2005, to Class AA Altoona.
Walker, a Richland native who will turn 21 in two weeks, had been with high
Class A Lynchburg, so his move is one level up. He batted .284 with 22 doubles,
three home runs and 35 RBIs in 72 games, his season having started a month late
because of offseason wrist surgery. McCutchen, 19, had been
with low Class A Hickory. He batted .291 with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs and 22
steals in 114 games." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
Lisa Winston, MLB.com, offers a feature on MIL catcher Angel Salome
:
" ... Primarily a middle infielder
growing up, the 5-foot-7 Salome moved behind the plate full-time in high school.
And don't let the height fool you. The powerfully built 20-year-old with a
cannon for an arm not only projects as a Major League catcher despite his size,
but the Brewers think it could be an advantage. "I don't think it's a negative
being short, and in some ways it's a positive, because the taller kids sometimes
have more issues," said Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik. "He's compact
and as strong as can be, a good athlete who can throw. I think it works to his
advantage." ... His arm grades out at a 70 on a scout scale of 20-80 (and
rarely, if ever, does anyone receive an 80). At the plate, Salome has hit with
line-drive power to all fields ... "To say we're happy with him is an
understatement," Zduriencik said."

Evan Longoria TB, from college kid in June to the top of the prospect
chart in August. Check out this week's
Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :
" ... 1. Evan Longoria
... Considered a safe pick coming into the draft, the Long Beach State
product has exceeded the wildest expectations as a pro thus far. Longoria is
already at his third level, and none has proved challenging. In his last five
games he is 10-for-21 with three homers and is hitting .356/.410/.700 with 16
homers in 180 at-bats between the three levels, after hitting just 13 (and
slugging .602) for Long Beach State."
" ... 2. Will Inman ...
The South Atlantic League is loaded with premium pitching prospects, but none
has been as consistently dominant as Inman this season. In two starts last week
he fanned 20 and walked three over 14 innings of work and allowed only one run.
He is now 9-1, 1.48 in 85 innings and has still not allowed a home run."
" ... 8. Kevin Kouzmanoff
... No one has had a bigger breakout performance than Kouzmanoff this
season, and he has continued it at Triple-A. After going 7-for-8 over his last
two games, he is now hitting .378/.462/.756 in 45 at-bats for the Bisons and
.388/.451/.675 overall in 289 at-bats.
Nate Stephens, RotoWorld.com, checks out, among others, Jason Hirsh HOU and
Adam Miller CLE.
" ... Jason Hirsh ...
The 6’8”, 250-pound right-hander has been dominating minor leaguers for two
seasons now and is easily one of the game’s top pitching prospects. His low-90s
fastball, plus slider, and quality changeup mean he has the arsenal to succeed,
and his performances have backed up that assertion. In 309 2/3 innings between
Double-A and Triple-A over the last two seasons, Hirsh has posted a 26-10 record
and 2.53 ERA to go with a 283/93 K/BB ratio ... In the long-term, I’d
prefer Garza’s potential to Hirsh’s relative certainty of becoming a quality No.
3 or solid No. 2 starter."
" ... Adam Miller ...
the 2003 first rounder has rebounded better than could have been hoped thus far
in 2006. Miller is 13-5 with a 2.81 ERA and a 139/38 K/BB ratio in 134 2/3
innings for Double-A Akron. More importantly, he’s stayed healthy all season
while showing improved life on all of his pitches. Miller’s fastball is again
hitting the mid-90s, although he probably won’t be topping 100 MPH again any
time soon. His slider is also again looking like a plus pitch, and his changeup
has developed well enough to the point of being a third big league offering. The
elbow injury will leave a red flag attached to Miller’s name for at least a few
more seasons, but he’s done everything he possibly can to dispel fears of a
recurring problem."
A salute to the Players / Pitchers of the Week :
" ... The Midwest League has named ...
outfielder Jordan Renz [LAA] as the Offensive Player of the Week ...
batted .429 (9-21) this week with 2 HR, 9 RBI, 5 runs scored and a slugging
percentage of .714 ... Jordan's 22 HR for the season is tops in the MWL
and his 78 RBI is good for third overall. It is the second time that Renz has
been named the Player of the Week." (Cedar Rapids Kernels)
" ... Billy Buckner [KC] ...
2-0, 0.69 ERA, 13 IP, 8 H, 5 BB, 9 K Giving up just one run in two starts,
collecting a win in each, Billy Buckner was a clear choice for the Texas League
Pitcher of the Week ... Kansas City selected Buckner in the second round
of the 2004 draft ... Despite a few bumps along the way, his Double-A
debut has gone well. After putting up an ERA of 6.98 in July, he has found the
groove in August, going 2-1 and with just six runs allowed in three starts."
(Texas League)
" ... Bryan LaHair [SEA] ...
powered his way to the PCL Batter of the Week Award by slugging six homers and
knocking in 14 runs during the week ... LaHair had a pair of two-homer
games while tallying a .583 batting average and an impressive 1.333 slugging
percentage during his celebrated week ... starter Robinson
Tejeda [TEXput up some powerful numbers of his own for the week, picking up
wins in both of his appearances while posting an ERA of 0.75 and fanning 21
batters to garner PCL Pitcher of the Week honors ... Tejeda is now
6-and-2 on the season with a 3.15 ERA." (Pacific Coast League)
" ... third baseman Evan Longoria
[TB] sizzled at the plate in his first full week at the Double-A level, hitting
.400 with 3 home runs, 7 RBI, a .370 on-base percentage and an .840 slugging
percentage to earn Hitter of the Week honors. He enjoyed four multi-hit
performances last week and is currently riding a five-game hitting streak ...
The 20-year-old Downey, CA native was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in
the first round (third overall) in the 2006 draft." (Southern League)
" ... outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury
[BOS] has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week ... The 22-year old
had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .400 (10-for-25) with one
double, two triples, one home run, seven runs scored, three RBI, one stolen
base, two walks and a .720 slugging percentage in six games ... Jacoby was
selected by the Boston Red Sox as the 23rd overall selection in the first round
of the June 2005 draft." (Eastern League)
" ... Philip Hughes [NYA] ...
Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week ... The 6'5", 220 lb. hurler made a pair
starts for the Thunder last week and was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA ... Philip, who was
ranked by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Yankees organization
entering the season and is fourth in the league in ERA (2.50) and strikeouts
(121), was selected by the New York Yankees as the 23rd overall selection in the
first round of the June 2004 draft." (Eastern League)
" ... South Atlantic League Eric
Campbell [ATL] ... a hit machine this week, as the 21-year-old
collected at least two hits in each of his last five ballgames. On Saturday
against Augusta, Campbell went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double as the
Braves eked out a 3-2 victory. After hitting .139 in the month of July, the
Indiana native is batting .388 in August." (MiLB,com)
" ... Appalachian League Travis
Snider [TOR] ... refusing to cool off, meriting his second consecutive
Player of the Week nod. The 18-year-old has hit safely in seven straight games,
and is batting .431 over 51 at-bats in the month of August." (MiLB,com)
" ... Northwest League Adam Cowart
[SF] ... tossed 11 2/3 scoreless innings this week and picked up two
victories. That's a typical week for the 22-year-old, who is 8-0 with a 0.29 ERA
over 61 2/3 innings pitched this season. Over three starts in August, Cowart has
yielded just one unearned run over 17 2/3 innings. To put it simply: the guy is
unstoppable." (MiLB,com)
Top pick in the 2006 draft ready to make his debut in the KJC system :
" ... Right-hander Luke
Hochevar remains on track to make his first start Wednesday for Class A
Burlington after a week of conditioning workouts at the Royals’ year-round
complex in Surprise, Ariz. “I talked to (minor-league pitching instructor) Mike
Mason,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said, “and he said Luke looked
super.” Hochevar, 22, was the first overall pick in the June draft but didn’t
sign until Aug. 5. He is scheduled to throw 30-35 pitches Wednesday for
Burlington against South Bend." (Kansas City Star)
The possibility of a lefty surprise in the Dodger rotation :
" ... Hong-Chih Kuo, who is starting
at Triple-A Las
Vegas simply to get more innings to work on his command, appears to be forcing
club officials to consider making him a permanent starter. Kuo, whom the Dodgers
optioned July 4, allowed only a run on four hits over six innings in Saturday's
6-2 win over Fresno and added a grand slam at the plate. Kuo was named the
Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for July 31-Aug. 6, a week when he
pitched 10 shutout innings over two starts. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti
said he plans to recall Kuo for the September roster expansion, but that it will
be as a reliever. Colletti didn't rule out converting Kuo entirely to starting
sometime in the future." (LA Daily News)
Several top prospects are likely to soon end their minor league seasons to hook
up on their national teams for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Havana, Cuba
beginning on the 25th of August. Among those selected for Team USA -
Nick Adenhart LAA, Billy Butler KC, Jarrod
Saltalamachia ATL, Brandon Wood LAA, Kevin Slowey
MIN, Kurt Suzuki OAK, Mark Reynolds ARZ and Zach
Segoivia PHI.
Matthew Pouliot, RotoWorld.com, checks in with a look at possible September
callups :
" ... Dustin Pedroia is Boston’s top prospect
at Triple-A, but David Murphy could be of more use to a
Red Sox club with Alex Cora as the only left-handed hitter on the bench. Since
moving up from Double-A, Murphy has hit .277/.371/.478 in a league that’s
strongly favored pitchers this year. Pedroia has also been
pretty good since a slow start caused by a shoulder injury suffered in spring
training. He’s at .307/.385/.430 on the season."
" ... The Yankees are expected to
shut Philip Hughes down as soon as the minor league season ends in
an effort to guarantee that he’ll enter 2007 healthy. Maybe an injury to one of
their top three starters would change that, but for now, Hughes owners should be
expecting no aid in September. It will probably pay off in the long run."
" ... The Rays haven’t given any
indication which of their top prospects will receive September callups.
Delmon Young and Jeff Niemann are the two to watch for.
Young has displayed more power lately and is currently sporting a .335/.357/.496
line for Triple-A Durham. Since the Rays looked past B.J. Upton’s comments in
last month’s USA Today article, I’m guessing that Young is also in line for a
callup and some playing time in right field next month.
Niemann would be another potential fantasy asset, but since he’s been handled
carefully in his recovery from shoulder surgery, I don’t think we’ll see him. If
I’m wrong, he’d be worth picking up."

CLE notes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer :
" ... John Farrell,
Indians director of player development, says it's unlikely right-hander Adam
Miller would be called up in September. "Our main goal was to get him
through a full year," Farrell said. "This has been a successful bounce-back year
for Adam. He's learned to pitch and to use his stuff instead of relying on
velocity." Miller, who had an elbow injury in 2005, is 13-5 with a 2.81 ERA in
23 appearances, including 21 starts, at Class AA Akron. He has 139 strikeouts in
134 2/3 innings ... Outfielder Trevor Crowe, the
Tribe's No. 1 pick in 2005, will start playing second base during Akron's next
homestand. He'll play second in the Arizona Fall League, and the Indians will
decide if he'll make a position change before next season. The Indians have a
big hole at second base, but even if Crowe makes the switch, it's unlikely he'd
compete for the big-league job next year."
