Zach Chalifour,
RotoTimes.com,
reviews the top picks from the 2006 draft :
" ... 1. Luke Hochevar ... went
straight to Double-A Wichita after finally signing last month. He showed that he
hadn't missed a beat despite going a whole year in which he only played a little
bit of independent-league baseball. He gave up just eight hits in 15.1 innings
through four starts - good for a miniscule .148 opponents' batting average - and
walked just two while striking out 16 to go along with a 1.17 ERA ... likely to become a mainstay in the Royals rotation
at some point next year."
" ... 2. Greg Reynolds ... has arguably been
the least productive out of these top ten picks, but he still had a respectable
two months at High-A Modesto. The 6-foot-7 Stanford Cardinal posted a 2-1 record
and 3.33 ERA in 11 starts, but the numbers that fell below expectations were his
29 strikeouts in almost 50 innings, as well as a .271 opponents' batting
average."
" ... 9. Bill Rowell ... a solid
all-around shortstop out of a New Jersey high school that just turned 18 last
weekend. He made a solid debut but didn't put up the flashy numbers that some of
the other top draft picks have. In 53 games of Rookie-level action, Rowell hit
.328 with three homers, 32 RBI, three steals, and a 29-59 walk-strikeout ratio
... he's plenty of years away from the majors, but Rowell should
remain the Orioles shortstop of the future, as he is an advanced hitter who
should begin developing average power in the next few years."
" ... 14. Travis Snider ... excelled at Rookie-level Pulaski. Snider hit .325
with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, and six steals in 54 games. The 18-year-old is likely
a good four years away from Toronto, but he has begun his pro career on a very
positive note."

Jim Callis,
Baseball America, on Scott Lewis CLE :
" ... As a sophomore at Ohio State in 2003, Lewis
looked like a lock for the first round of the 2004 draft. A lefty with an 89-92
mph fastball and a nasty curveball, he struck out 16 and 20 in back-to-back
starts. But he blew out his elbow late in the spring and made just five starts
as a junior. The Indians signed him for $460,000 as a third-round pick. Lewis’
elbow is fine now, though he pitched just 21 innings in his first two pro
seasons while missing time with biceps tendinitis in 2005. Cleveland is handling
him very gingerly, limiting him to no more than 70 pitchers per start this year
... Lewis did lead all full-season pitchers
with a 1.48 ERA and had a 123-28 K-BB ratio in 116 innings. He’s less
overpowering than he was in college. Lewis’ fastball has dipped to 84-88, but he
has compensated by learning to spot it well up and down in the strike zone. His
curveball has added depth and velocity since he has turned pro, and he also has
improved his changeup. A lefty who can locate his fastball and back it up with
plus secondary pitches should have more than enough stuff to succeed, so Lewis
should be fine."

Of course, it's Alex Gordon KC as
Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year :
" ... "He's been solid in everything, base stealing,
hitting for average, hitting for power," said Frank White, Double-A Wichita
manager and former Royals second baseman. "Definitely all phases of his game
have been solid. "He's done an outstanding job, he works hard in practice, he
takes this game seriously and he comes to try to win every day. That's what
stands out, that he's been able to maintain it all, and he's been strong in the
clutch, too ... By the numbers, Gordon had a great year: He hit .325 with
111 runs, 158 hits, 39 doubles, 29 homers, 22 stolen bases, 72 walks and 100
RBIs. He also had a .588 slugging percentage and .427 on-base percentage.
Gordon, who was also named the Texas League player of the year and a midseason
and postseason all-star, ranked in the top five in the TL in 10
categories--average (third), runs (first), hits (fourth), doubles (fifth, homers
(third), RBIs (third), walks (tied for first), slugging percentage (first),
on-base percentage (third), OPS (first)."
John
Manuel, in the BA Chat Room, answering questions about the Player of the
Year Award :
" ... four pitchers were in the hunt--Hughes,
Homer Bailey, Yovani Gallardo and Matt
Garza. For me, those were the four best seasons by minor league pitchers.
They were pretty comparable to each other, while Gordon stood out more from most
of the other batters. That was how I made my decision, and I think that argument
rang true for other members of the staff."
" ... Top prospect in the game is going to be a very
tough call. If I had to pick one right now, I'd pick Gordon, by a hair
over Delmon Young, whose defense in RF and whose makeup are
problematic. Cameron Maybin also would be in this discussion, as
would guys like Jay Bruce and Andrew McCutchen."
" ... Teahen was the Royals' best player for a long
stretch of the season, he really got it together and showed impressive aptitude
for a player his age, to go back to Triple-A, work on his swing and figure it
out. The Royals have a good problem--two good 3Bs. Eventually, I believe one of
them will move to 1B or LF, but having a 3-4-5 with some combination of
Gordon-Butler-Teahen looks good for the next 3-5 years."
Micah Owings " ... Surprisingly
16-2, 3.33 and .356 in 59 at-bats didn't cut it, but it didn't. He wasn't as
dominant as the other pitchers we considered in terms of K's (130 in 162 IP) or
ERA, but face it, this guy's in his first full pro season and gets to Triple-A,
then pitches great there? Very impressive season for Owings, who just two years
ago was an unsigned draft-eligible sophomore and seemed like a guy who had
peaked as a high school player."
Cameron Maybin " ... Maybin was
considered. I looked up his stats late in the year, and his season was about the
best one anyone has put up in that ballpark at West Michigan, and he did it at
age 19. No one slugs .450 there, and he slugged .457. He stole bases, he hit, he
fielded . . . he's got all the tools. He made a youthful mistake with his DUI
but we've always heard good things on the makeup, and I respect the improvement
he's made in just a year, because last year, running up to the draft, some teams
were skeptical on the bat. The Tigers weren't and were very encouraged by his
progress in instructional league. I think he's an elite prospect, a top 10 guy
in the game."
Nate Stephens, RotoWorld, checks out some hitters to consider for 2007 :
" ... Evan Longoria ... exploded onto
the professional baseball scene after signing this summer, belting 18 homers and
batting .315 in 62 games across three levels. Known for his relative polish,
Longoria exceeded the hype at the lower stages of the minors, and then tailed
off once reaching Double-A Montgomery. He struck out 20 times and walked once in
26 games in the Southern League, but he did hit six of his 18 homers there and
it was still a solid performance for someone fresh out of college. Longoria
still doesn't turn 21 for another month, but he'll begin the season at Double-A
and could break into the majors midway through the season."
" ... Brandon Wood ... will be
atop the list of minor leaguers to watch entering next season, but count me in
the camp of people who need to see more before considering him big league ready.
The right-handed Wood is a terrific prospect when considering that he hit
.276/.355/.522 in 118 games for Double-A Arkansas at the age of 21. That line
included 25 homers, and an even more impressive 42 doubles. Since Wood was
coming off a season in which he totaled 101 extra-base hits, nobody doubts his
power potential. However, the 6'5'' shortstop struck out 149 times in 453
at-bats in 2006, and his productivity when making contact was inflated by
playing in a hitter-friendly environment ... he's talented enough to make
the necessary adjustments at any time, so Wood needs to be under constant
surveillance."
" ... Ryan Garko has an OPS over
900 since joining the big club, so he'll be given a chance to play first base
next spring. He may fit best in a platoon role and Garko wasn't hitting nearly
this well in the minors before being promoted, but he's shown promise before.
Kevin Kouzmanoff could get time at first or third depending on how Andy
Marte and Garko perform, and he has as much short-term upside as anyone listed.
I'd rank him ahead of both Marte and Garko strictly for 2007, but he'll have to
play well next spring to move ahead of them on the depth chart."
Another young SP on the shelf :
" ... Triple-A pitcher Cesar Carrillo
suffered a setback in his comeback from an elbow injury and will be held out of
the upcoming Arizona Fall League, said Grady Fuson, vice president of scouting
and development. Carrillo, the Padres' first selection in the 2005 amateur
draft, hasn't pitched since July 12. The Padres had hoped he could return to
pitch against other franchises' top prospects in Arizona, but his elbow flared
up on the final pitch of a throwing session. Fuson said it's unlikely that
Carrillo, whose injury was diagnosed as a stretched ligament, will need
surgery." (San Diego Union Tribune)
Joe who?
" ... With an uncertain off-season approaching, top
White Sox prospect Josh Fields will split his time between the outfield
and third base for LaGuaira of the Venezuelan League. "I don't know how this is
going to shake out," general manager Ken Williams said Monday night, referring
to incumbent Joe Crede. "This is a good problem to have." ... Fields, 23,
who was promoted Sunday from Triple-A Charlotte ... already has impressed
manager Ozzie Guillen with his improved agility. Fields credits a yoga program
he undertook last winter. "We've got to be careful and not get too excited,"
Guillen said. "I was wrong when I saw him for the first time. I said he was
going to take a while to be a baseball player. He proved me wrong. ... Fields
earned International League rookie-of-the-year honors by hitting .305 with 32
doubles, 19 home runs, 70 RBIs, 85 runs and 28 stolen bases" (Chicago
Tribune)
With all the talk in TEX about their DVD trio, it's "H" who takes home the prize
:
" ... Right-hander Eric Hurley, who moved up
to Double-A Frisco before his 21st birthday this summer, won the Nolan Ryan
Minor League Pitcher of the Year award as the top prospect in the system. Hurley
combined to go 8-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 137 2/3 innings at Class A Bakersfield and
Frisco before a side muscle pull ended his season in mid-August. He had the
lowest ERA of any Rangers pitcher who spent the entire season in the minors, and
his 137 strikeouts ranked third behind John Danks (154) and Thomas Diamond
(145)." (Dallas Morning News)

USAToday (with notes on top prospects, team by team) selects Matt Garza
MIN as the minor league Player of the Year.
" ... Garza, 22, was named USA TODAY's Minor League
Player of the Year. He was 14-4 combined at three levels with a 1.99 ERA and 154
strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings. Promoted Aug. 7, he was thrust into the AL
Central race and got his first big-league victory in his third start."
DET " ... Cameron Maybin
... 19, who played for low-A West Michigan,
is the Midwest League's fastest player and has power, a strong arm and good baserunning instincts. The 2006 first-rounder missed a month with a finger
injury but still earned a spot in the Futures Game."
ATL " ... 3B Eric
Campbell ... a South Atlantic League All-Star for low-A Rome, where he
hit .297 and set single-season team records for home runs (22) and RBI (77). He
also stole 18 bases in 21 attempts. "
PHI " ... LHP Matt
Maloney ... 22-year-old was a third-round pick out of Mississippi in
2005 and established himself as a dominant prospect this season at low Class-A
Lakewood. Using an 89-92 mph fastball and strong slider and curveball, Maloney
struck out 10 batters three times this season and led the South Atlantic League
in wins (a team-record 16), innings pitched (168 2/3) and strikeouts (180)."
MIL " ... LHP William
Inman: At 19, Inman went 10-2 with a 1.71 ERA for low-A West Virginia. In
his first full season in the minor leagues, Inman, a third-round pick in 2005,
struck out 134 in 110 innings, giving up 75 hits while walking 24. He held South
Atlantic League opponents to a .190 batting average. "
CLE looking for ways to find a regular spot for Kouz :
" ... Kevin Kouzmanoff might be sent to the Arizona Fall League to become more adept
as a first baseman. ``We'll get him some time at third before the end of the
season,'' said Wedge, referring to Kouzmanoff's primary position. ``He also will
see some action at first.'' (Akron Beacon Journal)
Jim Callis,
Baseball America, on Jose Tabata NYA or Fernando Martinez
NYN ?
" ... Along with Pirates outfielder
Andrew McCutchen, Martinez and Tabata were the most exciting players in the low
Class A South Atlantic League this summer ...Martinez and Tabata were just 17
only added to the intrigue surrounding them ... Martinez hit .333/.389/.505 with
five homers, 28 RBIs and seven steals in 45 games, while
Tabata batted .298/.377/.420 with five homers, 51 RBIs and 15 steals in 86
contests. Assistant editor Matt Meyers is working on our SAL Top 20 Prospects
list, and he reports that very few scouts actually saw both Martinez and Tabata
in action. That’s because Martinez missed a month each with wrist and knee
injuries before spending August in the high Class A Florida State League, while
Tabata sat out most of the last seven weeks with a bruised thumb. Matt did find
one scout who caught both young stars, and he rated Tabata slightly ahead of
Martinez because he offers more with the bat. Martinez is more athletic and has
a better five-tool package, while Tabata projects as an above-average right
fielder, offensively and defensively. It’s really just a matter of preference,
as there’s little to separate the two. Martinez has a little more ceiling, while
Tabata is a little safer bet because we have more history to go on."
Lisa Winston, MLB.com, on some comeback stories 2006 :
" ... If I had to pick just
one, it would have to be Scott Lewis ... southpaw was drafted by
Cleveland in the third round of 2004 ... When drafted, he was still
rehabbing from "Tommy John" surgery he'd undergone as a sophomore ...
pitched just 21 innings at Class A Short-Season Mahoning Valley between
2004-2005 due to a shoulder injury and biceps tendonitis. This year, the Indians
bumped the 22-year-old past Class A Lake County to Class A Advanced Kinston ...
strict pitch limit. He maintained his spot in the rotation, going past the fifth
inning just four times and never working more than 5 2/3. With those
restrictions, Lewis not only never missed a start, he led the Minors in ERA,
posting a 1.48 over 27 outings, striking out 123 batters in 115 2/3 innings
while walking just 28 and scattering 84 hits. Carolina League hitters batted a
paltry .203 against him and, despite the limits, he finished third in the league
in strikeouts."

With the end of the regular season in all leagues we're about to take a break
from the daily reports to recharge the 'ol batteries and take care of some

the guys below for their superb work in prospecting over the last 5+ months.

John Sickels, MinorLeagueBall, on
Wade Davis vs Jacob McGee :
" ... Davis went 7-12, 3.02 in 27
starts for Southwest Michigan this year, with a 165/.64 K/BB in 146 innings ...
Although he has good pitching instincts in general terms, he is still working
out the difference between being a thrower and being a pitcher. His command
still needs work as well ...
McGee went 7-9, 2.96 this year
in 26 starts for Southwest Michigan, with a 171/65 K/BB in 134 innings ...
has good pitchability and pitching skill, changing speeds well with his fastball
and curve, although he still needs to improve his overall command ... Similar
numbers for the same team at the same level ... Both of them still need to
improve their command. I'm going to give McGee a slight edge here but it is very
close."
" ... McGee is younger so technically he has more projection. He also
improved more than Davis this year ... Overall they are both Grade B+ prospects,
and frankly I'm not sure which one I like better. They both seem like studs to
me. They both need to throw more strikes and cut their walk rates as they move
up. It will be very, very interesting to see which one adjusts more quickly to
higher levels. McGee is a bit better overall I'd say."
Luke Hochevar on the move again ... next a AA playoff start on Friday :
" ... Hochevar has had a whirlwind baseball
season. He pitched four games for the independent Fort Worth Cats, then was
drafted first overall by the Kansas City Royals in the June draft. He then made
four starts for Class-A Burlington ... "I feel it's been a good season," said
Hochevar, 22. "I'm more so looking at the progress on the mound that I've made
than where I'm at. As long as I'm getting better and executing pitches, where
I'm at is out of my control." ... failed to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers
and didn't pitch again until he joined Fort Worth in the spring ... "Anytime a
guy misses innings, it's time lost out of his development," said J.J. Picollo,
the Royals' senior director of minor-league operations."... He hasn't missed a
beat. He's an advanced pitcher, a mature kid, and we just want to get him out on
the mound from the time we signed him to the end of this fall. We'll get him
back on track." ... In four starts at Burlington, he was 0-1 with a 1.17 ERA
and, in 15 1/3 innings, he allowed two earned runs and struck out 16 while
walking two. ... He said his fastball, his go-to pitch, is at its best, while
his other two pitches are close. After the Wranglers' season ends, Picollo said
Hochevar will work out at the Royals' spring training facility and then pitch in
the Arizona Fall League, which starts Oct. 1."

Kevin
Goldstein, Baseball Prospectus, in the chat room at South Side Sox :
Josh Fields " ... He's had a very
good year obviously, and made great strides in transforming his outstanding
athleticism into baseball production. He has cooled down a bit from his May/June
surge, and his K rate is a bit of a red flag. He's a competent third-baseman,
but he might end up in a corner because I think they'll want to get him into the
lineup next year and Crede will still be around. He's a better third baseman
than, for example, Carlos Lee was, but because of the situation, I could see him
ending up in left or right and staying there."
Brandon McCarthy " ... I don't think he's
any kind of ace or savior in any way whatsoever. He doesn't have blow-you-away
kind of stuff to project as that. I think he's a solid No. 3 type starter -
which is a very valuable thing to have."
Lance Broadway " ... I think Broadway was
an overdraft - he had some very strong starts down the stretch of the 2005
season, but for me there wasn't enough of a track record or a power-pitching
profile for him to be selected as high as he was. My biggest problem
performance-wise is that he doesn't miss a ton of bats - which is troubling. He
doesn't throw especially hard, but his curveball is a very effective pitch, and
he throws a lot of strikes. Future star? Highly doubtful. But I could see him as
a back of the rotation type."
Some new kids on the block win recognition in the season's final
Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America :
" ... 2. Tim Lincecum ...
Drafted out of Washington with the reputation for being able to miss bats,
Lincecum has lived up to his rep in his brief pro career. Since the beginning of
August the 22-year-old has 48 strikeouts in 28 innings and has allowed just 13
hits and 12 walks."
" ... 4. Bill Rowell ...
Finished his season with a flurry by hitting .389/.439/.583 after a late
promotion to the New York-Penn League, and he doesn't turn 18 until next week.
For the sake of Orioles fans, let's hope his first full season goes better then
that of Brandon Snyder, their first pick from the 2005 draft."
" ... Zach Segovia ... was tied
for the minor league lead with 16 victories, and that was before leaving for
Team USA duty. He then went out and won two more games in Cuba, giving him 18
for the year (though these stats are kind of like college bowl game stats; they
don't count into your regular season total). Segovia's consistent: He doesn't
strike out many in the minors (116 in 156 IP) or internationally (6 K's in 11
IP)."
" ... Ryan Braun ...
finished on a roll, hitting .455 with a pair of homers. The fifth overall pick
in 2005 out of Miami, Braun put up much better numbers than his first half in
the Florida State League. Since he was called up to Double-A, Braun batted
.303/.367/.589 and more than doubled his home run total in the FSL. "He might
not be a third baseman, but he's got unbelievable raw power," a scout with an
American League club said."
John Franco, SportsBlurb (mostly
subscription) takes a look ahead to 2007 and possible contenders for Rookie of
the Year :
NL " ... 1. Chris Young
... The question will be playing time: Byrnes could be back, along with
Luis Gonzalez and Carlos Quentin, which would leave Young without a position
next season. With a line of .276-21-77 in 100 games at Triple-A, Young has
little to prove in the minor leagues, but that didn’t stop Arizona from sending
Carlos Quentin back for more seasoning. Still, if Young can get 500 at-bats, a
20-20 season is not out of the question, and his defense will get him regular
airtime on Baseball Tonight."
AL " ... 1. Delmon Young
... Devil Rays kept Young in the minor leagues for a while after his
suspension for throwing a bat at an umpire, and almost certainly preserved his
eligibility for the Rookie of the Year Award next year, for which he will be an
overwhelming favorite. Young has already had a four-hit game and gone 8-for-11
in the major leagues, and could hit 30-plus home runs next year to win the award
in a walk."
AL " ... 2. Alex Gordon
... has completely demolished Double-A pitching this season, posting a
line of .325-29-100 with 22 stolen bases and a .427 on-base percentage. The
Royals have Mark Teahen hitting .294-18-67 in the major leagues this year and
don’t need Gordon at third base, and they have stated that they would not mind
seeing Gordon getting a full season at Triple-A next year, but they could use
him in the outfield and the allure of his offensive potential may be too
difficult to resist. If you don’t like Gordon here, feel free to pretend that I
meant his teammate Billy Butler instead."

Joey Votto, batting king in the Southern League :
" ... Votto
has won the 2006 Southern League Batting Championship by pacing the league with
a .319 average. A Triple Crown contender for much of the season, Votto's name
appears near the top of the league leader-board in nearly every offensive
category. In addition to winning the batting title, he also led the league with
162 hits, 46 doubles, 70 extra-base hits, 85 runs scored, a .408 on-base
percentage and a .547 slugging percentage. He was also tied for second in the
league with 22 home runs while ranking third with 77 RBI ... The Toronto,
Ontario native was named the Southern League's Most Valuable Player by a
league-wide vote. He was also named to the Southern League's Postseason All-Star
team as a first baseman and was the North Division's starting first baseman in
the 2006 Southern League All-Star game." (Southern League)
Rockies' hitter, OAK pitcher the best of the PCL in the final week :
" ... All-PCL Outfielder Jeff Baker
... slugged 12 hits during the final eight games of the season, including
three doubles, one triple, and six homers, on his way to collecting the season's
final PCL Batter of the Week award ... Jason Windsor
[OAK] takes the week's top pitching honors for his two appearances during the
week, in which he picked up a win and posted an earned run average of 1.38 while
tallying 13 strikeouts." (Pacific Coast League)
A pair of outfielders for your draft list ... Hitters of the Week to wrap the
regular season :
" ... California League
Cyle Hankerd [ARZ} ... made his debut with the JetHawks on August 16,
but it wasn't until this week that he really made his presence felt. The left
fielder hit safely in his last nine games and ended the season with a scorching
.369 average for Lancaster. Five of his 15 hits on the week left the yard,
including a pair of two-homer games against Bakersfield on Wednesday and Rancho
Cucamonga on Sunday. The 21-year-old ended the season by going 4-for-5 with a
double and four RBIs on Labor Day." (MiLB.com)
" ... Pioneer League Daniel Dorn [CIN]
... entered the week with a .330 average, and still found a way to raise it 25
points to .355. The left fielder's week was littered with big games, as he
homered twice and drove in four runs against Ogden on August 28, and followed
that up the next day by homering and driving in five runs." (MiLB.com)
Nate Stephens, RotoWorld, on a pair of relatively unsung stars :
" ... Kevin Kouzmanoff
... It’s rare for a player to peak in his very first experience at the major
league level, but Kouzmanoff did just that by hitting a grand slam on the first
pitch he saw after being promoted. The right-hander may well enjoy a fantastic
career from here on out, but it’s hard to get much better than that ...
this season had been his best to date, as Kouzmanoff was batting .379 with 22
homers and a 46/33 K/BB ratio in 94 games before being promoted ... The
Indians figure to play Kouzmanoff more often than not down the stretch ...
they want to find out if the 25 year-old should be in their plans as a starter
in 2007."
" ... Adam Lind ...
Assigned to Double-A New Hampshire to begin this season, Lind continued raking
with a .310/.357/.543 line in 91 games in the Eastern League. That his plate
discipline eroded all the way to an ugly 87/25 K/BB was concerning, but the 19
homers he hit matched his total from the previous two seasons. Surprisingly,
Lind moved up to Triple-A Syracuse and performed even better while showing his
best control of the strike zone yet. He hit .394 with five homers and seven
doubles in 109 at-bats while posting an impressive 18/23 K/BB ratio. Lind’s
performance this season has raised his stock from that of a platoon player
without much home run power to that of a potential everyday starter."
Zach Chalifour,
RotoTimes, checks out September callups :
" ... Yusmeiro Petit
... in the middle of his first sub-par season after two outstanding
years than landed him in the discussion of the top pitching prospects in all of
baseball. He will have another chance to redeem himself while working out of the
bullpen."
" ... Jordan Tata ...
pitched well when he started the season with Detroit and had a great season at
Toledo before making his return. He will work middle reliever but has a great
chance at earning a rotation spot next season."
" ... Troy Tulowitzki
... could have the biggest impact of any callup down the stretch. The Rockies
first-round draft pick last June, Tulowitski will take over on an everyday basis
for Clint Barmes at shortstop. He hit .291 with 13 homers and six steals in 423
at-bats for Double-A Tulsa and will most likely be the team's starting shortstop
next season."
" ... Miguel Montero
... offers solid power from the catching position and will attempt to
impress the Diamondbacks management before fighting for the starting job next
spring."
Jason A. Churchill, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, with some SEA prospect notes in
his weekly column:
" ... OF Adam Jones
... ended the season in Tacoma on a hot streak, going 12-for-21, including
a career-best five-hit effort on Aug. 30. In his big league stint he hit .208 in
25 games. He has big-time ability, however, as evidenced by his .492 slugging
percentage and tremendous growth defensively in his first full season playing
center field. Jones is the club's No. 1 prospect and has all-star skills across
the board, including a terrific throwing arm, plus speed and potential
25-30-home run power. He possesses the skills and character to be a bona fide
star."
" ... RHP Francisco Cruceta
... has a power arsenal that likely profiles best in relief, but with a few
control adjustments could become an option for the starting rotation. He has a
90-93 mph four-seamer to set up a plus split-finger fastball. The splitter is
his out pitch and helped the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder lead the Pacific Coast League
in strikeouts this season with 185. More consistency with his breaking ball
could lead to a more economical approach and limit the long ball -- he served up
25 on the season."

" ... Ryan Feierabend learned a
lot season with the Missions. The 21-year-old left-hander learned about changing
speeds, about pitch location, about approaching hitters. He didn't, however,
learn how to pitch off Cloud Nine. That's where he was Sunday night against
Corpus Christi, less than 24 hours after learning he was headed for the major
leagues. His final start in San Antonio wasn't terrible, but it did turn out to
be his 12th loss of the season ... Feierabend, [Travis] Chick
and former Missions starter Cesar Jimenez were promoted in part
because the Mariners want Felix Hernandez to skip at least two starts this
month." (San Antonio Express News)
Kevin T. Czerwinski, MLB.com, makes his picks as the best of the minor
leaguers :
" ... Kevin Kouzmanoff ...
after rebounding from a back injury that had hampered him for the better part of
the previous 18 months, Kouzmanoff returned with a vengeance this season and has
flirted with hitting .400 for almost the entire year, remaining atop all of the
Minor Leagues. He began the season with Double-A Akron of the Eastern League.
All he did there was hit .389 in 67 games and would easily have led the circuit
had he not been bumped up to Buffalo ... tore up Triple-A pitching as
easily as he handled the hurlers in Double-A, to the tune of .370 ... And he
became just the third player in Major League history to smack a grand slam in
his first career at-bat Saturday."
" ... As for the top pitcher ... Phil Hughes. He
isn't among the leaders in victories and his ERA isn't microscopic like that of
some other hurlers. But know this: he's a bona fide star. This kid can pitch, he
has guts, he has guile and let's look at one startling fact: he's distinguished
himself in an organization that only recently began to start relying on
youngsters to bolster its millionaire-laden roster ... has allowed one
earned run or less in 13 of his last 15 starts. He didn't allow an earned run in
nine of those outings. The opposition in the Eastern League is hitting .179
against him and his strikeout-to-walk ratio is nearly five-to-one."

innings this season, his first in the United States after signing with the
Arizona Diamondbacks." (MiLB.com)

" ... The Dodgers' best starting pitcher in August is a huge question mark for

" ... Irritation in the ulnar nerve of prospect Justin Upton's right
elbow has limited the Class A center fielder to designated hitting duties the
past four days. South Bend manager Mark Haley doesn't think there's reason to be
concerned about last year's No. 1 pick. "He just needs rest," Haley said. "It's
just the grind of a long season." Upton is expected to participate in
instructional league in Tucson this month, and the club will monitor his elbow
closely." (Arizona Republic)
Lisa Winston, MiLB.com, on Brian Barton CLE :
" ... The "poster child" for the non-drafted,
free-agent-turned-blue-chip prospect, the Indians were savvy enough to sign
Barton out of the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2004 ... The
24-year-old Barton began his pro career at Class A Lake County in 2005, hitting
.414 for then-Captains manager Mike Sarbaugh before moving up to finish the
summer at Kinston. "He has power to all fields, he's improved his strike zone
knowledge and approach at the plate, he has good range in the outfield, he runs
the bases well, and he just does all the little things to help you win," said
Sarbaugh, who got to manage Barton again the first half of the '06 season at
Advanced-A Kinston, before he moved up to Double-A Akron. "He hustles, plays the
game the way it should be played, and is a great kid who has all the ability and
just needs experience." Between the two stops, Barton batted .325 (second in the
organization), with 18 homers (tied for fourth), 80 RBIs (fourth) and 40 stolen
bases (third) ... Barton views the whole "non-drafted" issue with
equanimity. "Honestly, I feel like if you want to make it to the Major Leagues
you have to produce, whether you're a first-rounder or not drafted at all," he
said."
